How do you guys feel about rolling as yourself in a new game? And by that I mean both a character loosely being yourself but with some changes, or literally your IRL self transplanted into the game world.

Played in a game where we did it before, it was pretty weird but also fun.

Also in a different game based in our city, I found myself and beat the shit out of myself.

Due to bullshit I've been forced to move halfway across the country, separating me from my gaming group and plunging me face-first into a wretched den of normies.

Been here about six months and I've managed to make some friends at work though shared vidya interests. Going out on a limb, I asked them if they'd ever tried pencil and paper RPGs. One of them said that he played D&D once in high school, another said she did free form forum role playing way back in the day (red flag, I know).

They expressed some interest in trying it, but said that they weren't really into the whole "wizards and elves" scene, saying they would want something a bit grittier. I suggested Dark Heresy and based on my descriptions ("Kinda like Star Trek, except everything is terrible" etc) they got on board.

So my question to you is this, /tg/: How do I get normies into the 40k universe without overburdening them with all the minutiae and weirdness that comes with it? Have any of you ever done this? What would be a good plot hook to get thing rolling?

Well, I kinda got into the same issue, so I'd start with only basic rules and basic lore.
If I may point, you can at least have the fun to tell them only what their characters should know, instead of having them knowing all about everything in the 40k univers which could be fun.

That's a good call. Keep them as in the dark as possible. Should I encourage them to take as few lore skills as possible? Keep them completely ignorant and let the inquisitor and other NPCs deliver exposition?

Let's talk about giant robots.

Tell me about some of your favorites. What are your preferred naming conventions? What are good reasons to have them around? How would giant robot construction help in other regions of technology? What are viable scenarios and problems for when giant robots are the best answer?

Also, what are some of /tg/'s preferred films or series revolving around giant robots?

Meant to namefag it just for this thread's purposes.

The reason I start this thread is because I've created a character in a d20Future campaign which is meant as a projection of our own future, sitting at PL6-going-on-7. He's mostly a tech-focused Krieger knockoff with dreams of mad science running through his head, but his Profession is Heir, and for funsies I tied that to Tesla Heavy Industries, the in-game future incarnation of Tesla Motors, which has now exploded into basically the keystone of energy technologies in 2170, still headed by the cybernetic body of Elon Musk's brain in a jar.

Long story short, our session yesterday involved a brief conversation with Elon Musk (or the Science-Pope as I jokingly called him) where I remarked that I want to build giant robots. He shot it down while mockingly making me Director of Giant Robotics. Which means I'm now on the Board of Directors for Tesla Heavy Industries. I have a fancy office now. I also have to go to board meetings to inform them of my plans, progress, and why we need giant robots.

I just wanted to build Large-size stealth mecha in my lab to board enemy ships and assist in extraction and bounty hunting jobs. But now it's a thing. Fuck.

TL;DR, Director of Giant Robotics, wat do?

To battle giant aliens that are genetically compatible with humans and fascinated by this thing we have called "culture".
Just make sure the robots are also jets, and that you have aidorus singing about their boyfriends being pilots in your ad campaign.

Hi /tg/
I'm writing a modern scenario, which has a strong opening (PCs are speeding away from an armed robbery, one of their number is dead, need to get to the swap vehicle) and a good couple of encounters/challenges, but now I've gotten to the part where they've holed up in the cabin their dead teammate set up as their bolthole and I'm stuck.
What should I throw at four armed robbers? Slenderman? Zombies? Rival criminals? I have serious writer's block. Help me /tg/, you're my only hope.

Tarantino is very likely the worst trash in modern cinema; he is arguably worse than the Michael Bays and Uwe Bolls, precisely because he is just clever enough to trick the mal-adjusted film school dropouts who masquerade as critics into thinking there's something complex at work.

BE PURE! BE VIGILANT! BEHAVE!

The British anthology 2000AD started life in 1977 as a comic for boys aged about 12. Its earliest stories were spins on traditional favourites of the genre: war stories, exotic adventures in faraway places, sport strips, and the classic science fiction hero Dan Dare. But even at that point it had a streak of midnight black humour and social satire running through it, as shown most clearly by the comic’s most celebrated star, the lawman with the iron chin, Judge Dredd.

The début of Nemesis the Warlock in 1980 brought with it a lot more weirdness.

Starting in Prog 167, this demented sword and sorcery sci-fi story of a harpoon headed alien’s war against a xenocidal religious maniac owed more to continental comics like Métal hurlant than traditional British ones. Set in a nightmarish future where the promise of technology has given way to stagnation and superstition, the cruel humans of the Terran Empire are the masters of vast galactic empire made possible by an ancient piece and mysterious device built into a former Emperor’s tomb. With it, they may guide their ships far from the mighty hive cities of Terra to anywhere in the galaxy in order to purge it of alien life. Even death cannot stop their leader, the tyrannical Inquisitor Tomás de Torquemada.

Only one creature can hope to stop Torquemada: the alien Khaos Sorcerer NEMESIS THE WARLOCK!

If you are even a tiny bit familiar with Warhammer 40,000 quite a lot of that description will seem really familiar. Many of the details of 40k’s Imperium in particular and the setting in general can be traced back to Nemesis, and the stories and characters featured in the comic can in turn be fed into games set in Games Workshop’s Dark Future quite easily. The author of Nemesis, Pat Mills, has even done so himself –his character Klovis the Redeemer, from the old Warhammer Monthly comic, is essentially Torquemada with a slightly different hat.

Technically, Nemesis didn’t start as its own series. Comic Rock was proposed as an ongoing series of stories based (loosely) on pop songs. Nemesis proved so absurdly popular so quickly that the idea was dropped.

As an aside, did you know that you could get a Nemesis for Heroclix? I didn’t until quite recently. Apparantly it was only released in limited amounts in the UK.

The Necropolitan template is the cheapest way to become a playable undead, and it's an uncommon but not super rare choice of character.

Usually DMs see the long list of immunities undead get and get spooped, but the few who realize how little that shit matters compared to being a level behind the group generally OK it (give or take setting/party cohesion reasons, which of course take precedence).

How are you passing your end of year celebrations? did you get many socks for xmas?

As first character I want to make a mage,
as objective I want to get powerful enough to create a magic hideout on a different plane.

If I make it then I'll start kidnapping other player's character to preserve them in airtight bags suspended in a state of magic sleep,
I'll slowly build up a collection by infiltrating different parties as a low-mid level mage or controlling the characters I kidnapped (of course I'll request their character sheets from the player to keep as a trophy).

As a DM would you be down with this?

As your first character, hell no. Because you'd actually expect your character to win in the end.

I'd let an experienced player start out as a member of the party that eventually pulls this shit to become the BBEG, but once the reveal happens (if it's even successful. The player still has to PLAY), that mage officially becomes an NPC

Both a quest and a world-building effort, everbody is welcome!

Welcome to the second episode of the God of Creation Quest! I’ll be your Oracle for tonight, and I will tell you the true tale of Atet-Ri, the light god who shaped this world! I’ll post a handy-dandy recap in a sec.

From his throne, Atet-Ri overlooked the valley he had created from his own blood. The race he had created frolicked peacefully in the liquid light. They seemed purposeless, but worry-free.
Atet-Ri wondered about this world. He had seen little of it so far, but he had claimed this land for his own.
He wondered about the one. Was the one truly greater than himself?
He wondered about the Alwé. Were they equal to him, making him not above them? Or did he make imperfect beings?
He wondered about sleepyhead. What was this plane of his? Were there others like him? What's it like being just a stone head?
He wondered about many things...

That’s when he decided that sitting around will make your butt sore! Well, that’s not exactly what he thought, but it was something along those lines alright.

Atet-Ri decided to:
>Go out and explore, leaving the Alwé behind
>Talk to the Alwé about something
>Create something
>Do something with his orb
>Visit mister sleepyhead in his hole
>other (write-ins are always welcome!)

I understand the economic importance of spice, but can't Leto II avoid humanity's destruction by allowing for the recreation of computers? They can move ships between worlds without having to rely on Dune for anything. I understand that that might cause problems of its own, but surely his foresight can predict and solve them.

Leto 2 could have avoided humanities destruction by simply declaring "THE EMPEROR SAYS HUMANITY IS NOW GOING TO COLONIZE THE FAR CORNERS OF THE GALAXY" and simply sending missions to scatter humanity about.
>>
The Butlerian jihad forbidded thr use of thinking machines.

One of the main theme of the books is that foresight doesn't solve anything, and more or less renders the individual to a cripple who cannot decide how to act.

My kingdom has a variety of public festivals, divided between holy days and state festivals.

State festivals mostly celebrate momentous events in the nation's history. Honestly, there's not too many of them, as the kingdom has only existed as a unified entity for the last twelve years.

First and most obvious, there's Crown Day, celebrated on the anniversary of the first king's coronation. Fireworks are set off over major cities, grand markets and parties are held, partially financed by the crown and partially by local lords. For the whole day and frequently up to three or four days longer, the entire kingdom celebrates its unification after eight centuries of civil war and strife.

The monarch's birthday is a somewhat less grand affair, but it's often taken as a chance for the people to show their patriotism. Flags are hung from windows and the day is celebrated by family gatherings, meals and toasts to the ruler's name. This is the day tavern-keepers dream of all year, laying in extra supplies for the day-long toasts, drinking contests and so on. In the capitol city, a military parade is held, headed by the monarch and royal family.

Graduation is perhaps the most culturally unique of the kingdom's festivals. For ten days starting in the middle of spring, the graduates from the three Royal Universities; the Temple College; the Royal Military Academy; and the Arcanium announce the students that have passed their final examinations and diplomas, final awards, offices and so on are handed out. The king personally attends these graduations and the subsequent tournaments and displays of excellence from either graduated students, or those entering their final year. This is also the traditional time for guilds to award masteries and other titles and to take on new apprentices.

The holy year for the kingdom starts on the first new moon after midwinter. This is a day sacred to Ullr, the god of glory and marks the end of the Time of Pyres. With the return of the moon after the longest night, the new year begins. It is a time for the quiet swearing of oaths and the undertaking of great deeds. Like all of Ullr's ceremonies, it is not a loud or widely-celebrated affair, instead taking place in sacred groves, ancient rings of stone and remote lodges. The god personally witnesses good and glorious deeds and their undertaking on this day and ensures they will never be forgotten, kept alive on the wind's breath. With the Time of Pyres and the Darkest Nights concluded, Ullr opens the gates of heaven and returns the rule of the world to the other gods, before retreating once again to the wild places.

The Time of the Pyres itself begins on the last full moon before the winter solstice and ends on the next new moon. During this time, the gods retreat into heaven and Ullr bars the gates, keeping watch over the world in its darkest time. Followers of the god of glory light great pyres at their remote and secret temples, keeping the light burning until the return of life to the world. Even common people light torches and candles, keeping a flame burning all through the waning of the moon. It is an inauspicious time for travelling and battle, but even so, disciples of Ullr are vigilant, keeping a close eye on the shadows and marking the stars to ensure that darkness does not over-step its allotted boundaries.

The first day of spring, Imbolc, is a more joyous time. Often known as Seeds Day, it marks the start of spring and is sacred to Nu Wa. Imbolc is marked with dances, song, and the ritual blessing of fields by Nu Wa's followers. Ash and compost is spread over the fields and tilled into the ground, ready to be planted. During this time, Nu Wa's temples and shrines are scenes of unseasonal growth, covered in flower and green shoots.

This is agony, torture of the purest sort. You feel like your ribs are buckling, bending under uncountable degrees of pressure. Any minute now, you are sure, your torso will collapse inwards, every organ in your body disintegrating like some deep sea fish brought up into a more hostile atmosphere. This is, quite simply, awful.

This is also, or so Petra claims, how you wear a corset. You're not sure how she knows that – she made a vague allusion to helping a “friend” dress, once, but left it at that – but she seemed to know best. It seemed like a few brief, but madly active seconds had passed between asking for her help and finding yourself bare from the waist up, being squeezed into this hellish contraption. Now, grunting softly with exertion, Petra tugs hard on the seemingly delicate ribbons running up the back, pulling the corset as tight just about as it can get.

Then, all of a sudden, the pain around your torso lessens as the enchanted garment finds some kind of equilibrium. You couldn't even guess how that works – perhaps Scathach, the enigmatic witch that created this thing from the bones of an angel, could tell you, or she could claim a trade secret – but you can't deny that it does, indeed, work.

Maybe Petra has the right idea about magic – accept it and move on.

“There!” Petra announces, slapping you so hard on the back that you almost spill over, “Finished, yes? I told you I knew what I was doing!”

You never doubted her, you reply with all the sincerity you can scrape together, not for a second. With the corset pinching you tightly, you feel... strange. Solid, somehow, as if each measured breath was proof of your own existence. That'll be the magic at work, you assume as you button your shirt back up, hiding the luridly gothic piece of attire from sight. So, you muse out loud to yourself as you fumble with the buttons, what should you do today?

“I had an idea,” Petra offers, a strangely flat note in her voice, “Shopping – since, I am told, we are going outside on adventures again? Ah, but you should have brought me along, yes?”

...So she heard about that, did she?

“You carried a severed arm through the corridors,” Petra pauses, and the smile you expect to see on her face fails to appear, “People talked.” In the silence that follows her words, then, you realise that she is actually pretty upset about things.

With good reason, perhaps. Even if it wasn't some grand adventure you went on, you still went against your word. If your positions were reversed, you'd be seething about it, cursing her for treating you like a child. You open your mouth, fumbling for the right words, when Petra cuts you off.

“Guns, yes?” she suggests, “So we can fight from a distance. Less risk this way, and demons can put magic in... ah, enchant them.”

Guns, you murmur, a cold chill running down your spine at the simple word. That's not a word you've ever associated with anything good. In truth, your first instinct is to turn her down immediately, even asking her to never raise the idea again. Then again, she might know a little something about this kind of thing...
