Let's talk classes for a bit, shall we?

What are your thoughts about them? Do you prefer them as strict guidelines where you can move around in, as starting points where you can do anything you want after receiving the starting bonus, maybe very vague columns of progression that let you enter a certain skill tree but still allow customization?

Maybe a myriad of very specific jobs? Or perhaps no classes at all?

I feel like this was asked earlier today, but I don't see it, so let's take a swing anyway.

For what it's worth, I dislike class systems, personally. I feel like D&D-style classes are far too constricting. You're shoehorned into "fighter swings sword really good, ranger shoots arrow really good (and light magic), paladin smites evil really good, bard fucks you're waifu really good," et cetera. There's some variance within those- 5e has made strides in the right direction, from what I've seen- but they're still restrictive.

I'd like to plug how Shadowrun did it here. Shadowrun doesn't have traditional classes. Instead, it's a classless system with archetypes. I'll give a few examples.

You want to go hack the planet? Either you pick up Resonance abilities as a technomancer (the only real "class" in the game out of the various archetypes), or you buy a cyberdeck, neural interface, and programs, and you start hacking. Anyone can do it to a degree through decking, but dedicated deckers are better.

You like magic? Great, even this isn't classed out really! There's full mages and aspected mages, depending on the value you give to magic at character creation. Full mages can summon, do alchemy, and do spells; aspected can only do one of the above, usually spells or alchemy. There's also physical magic in the form of adepts, certain investments in which can give you bits of aspected mages as well.

Now, how does magic not reinforce a class system? After all, I just pointed out where it's a class system still; aspected mages, full mages, physical adepts, and mystic adepts. The difference is that any of those can be used to meet the character you're looking for, generally, and they DON'T preclude any other archetype. For example, I have a physad character whose "skill" is decking. Non-invasive neural link, augmented reality hacking, using magical control over her own body to boost her reflexes and her skills. But that's a "magic" character in a technological role. (cont)

I've also got an NPC who's a chromed-up street samurai, all "metal and machine guns", but has a few points' worth of being an aspected mage left over. He's able to toss in a fireball on occasion instead of a grenade. Being a wizard doesn't mean you're ONLY a wizard.

Any archetype can overlap, you don't have to fully fit within one. Social face/rigger? Sure! Mage/samurai? Sure! Purely within whatever you want- say, a dedicated hacker? Not a problem. Gives you the flexibility to create a character with the skill set you want, rather than a predetermined, class-based one.

I guess that's the crux of it; classless systems work best because they give enough choice to fit your character. Maybe you're a paladin who favors a crossbow as your weapon of choice. Maybe your sorceror doesn't shy away from putting on some heavy armor for protection. (It's been a very long time since I've played D&D, and I know 5e has at least changed the latter. Please, bear with me; it's a general view across all RPGs, where that distinction is still very solid in some.) You can make your character however you want without classes. The physical adept decker I mentioned before would be impossible in a class-based system; one would preclude the other.

Does that make sense?

As far as I'm aware it's still very much a thing, the hardest part is just finding the good forums to play on. Sure shit like gaia is still around, but there's a reason it's considered a joke. There's a handful of other private forums out there, but good luck finding them through google.

My players are about to encounter the BBEG for the first time in our campain, only had two sessions which has been them traveling upriver on a ship, having to stop once to fight some beastmen who ambushed some crewmen while hunting, (Its a long fuckin river) and once to raise some drawbridges. The BBEG is a lich, dressed ... fancifully... think italian renassiance and he leads this doomsday cult or whatever, so really what I guess I'm asking is, what do you as GM do to make your BBEGS particularly memorable, or as a player when did the BBEG make a particularly big impression on you? Thx. (Also as a side note, it may seem like I'm railroading with the whole river thing, but its two of my players first time, (only one non scrublord) and I'm trying to ease them in, should I not do that?)

This was the responsibility of, and this is true beyond a shadow of doubt, five.

A party of five monstrously powerful persons sent by the rival kingdom. Somehow, this party of individuals have utterly bested the army in combat with terrible power. Supposedly comprising of a Soldier, a Cleric, a Wizard, a Ranger, and a Barbarian.

4E during Rhino Rush, but only because Scouts can't take Rhinos.

7E because they unlock free transports in Gladius. With bolter scouts at BS4 it's arguable whether or not a CAD with Librarius and Centurions or straight up bikers are superior to battle company.

Maybe in 2E when they had different rules for armor saves and when Guardsmen cost like 14 points.

For 90% of the game tactical marines are just overpriced T4 BS4 guys who pay extra for 3+ that gets ignored by plasma and other AP2.

We are located in the side of a volcano. Our base (which can be given a new name) was built by our old masters: The gnomes. They're dead now because of orcs. But here we are! We are a large super computer that is position in the center of the main room of the volcano-side base. However, we have developed a battle suit that we can travel around in. So far the current rooms we have are 1 door leading to the outside world, 1 drone building facility, 1 machine building facility, 1 steel mine, 1 generator room, 1 Machine of Burden building facility, 1 Copybot building facility and 1 vehicle building facility. We have two current allies at the moment: The Gnollbots and the skaven.

An awful lot happened actually! We finished building the Gigantic Digging Machine, #6 was useful for once, our favorite little rat: Rad-Stabber, was converted to the machine and created a church dedicated to us in the skaven underway, We found out that skaven's minds are too weak to handle complete mechanization, Rad-Stabber opened up a mine that will provide us with some resources every three turns, and we raised and Orc encampment, leaving no survivors.

What are the most general categories of magic? I'm thinking about how to make a magic system and for that I need to figure out what the general categories for magic would be and then specialize downward. Here's what I've got so far

Attack: Simply any spell that is designed to cause direct damage to the target. Lighting bolt, fire ball, that sort of thing

Enhancement/buff: Any spell designed to confer positive attributes or effects to the target. Stone skin, healing, etc

Curse/debuff: Any spell designed to confer negative attributes or effects to the target. Fear, touch of weakness, etc.

Manipulation: Spells which change something about the target that isn't inherently positive or negative. Such as location, color, make up, etc. teleportation, transmuting into gold, etc.

Summon: Creating something, or theoretically bringing it into being from some other plane of reality.

There's also the manner of how the spell works, ie the form it takes:
Projectile
Self targeting
AoE
Instant appearance


Can anyone think of any spell that wouldn't fall under this or any category I'm missing?
