Long story short, I want to put together a GrimBright "Dark Fantasy" type world for a D&D 5e setting, inspired by Warhammer Fantasy, Castlevania, Ravenloft, Midnight, Bloodborne and the Souls games. That means I need to come up with a list of races suitable for the setting. Ignoring my plans for eventually adding new "regions" to the map which could thusly provide further races, how do these races feel for the setting?

* Dhampirs: One of the many "times of darkness" for this setting involved a centuries-long reign by vampire aristocrats. Dhampirs, humans with vampiric lineage, are the legacy of those nobles sating their lusts with human underlings.

* Vrylokas: During the "Reign of Blood", some humans tried to magically transform themselves into beings more like their vampiric masters, becoming a race of shunned and hated "living vampires".

* Tieflings: Stealing Bael Turath from the Nentir Vale; descendants of a fallen empire that made a diabolic pact for success, but fell anyway.

* Devas: Angels that forsook the heavens to shepherd humanity in the Dawn Age. Not exactly happy with how everything's gone to shit since then. Can't break the cycle of reincarnation, though.

* Dragonborn: Dragon-like humanoids literally born as embodiments of sin.

* Haglings: The larval form of hags, or the ultimate evolution of sorcerers, depending on who you ask.

* Shifters: One "time of darkness" involved a witch-king who melded man and beast together to create rampaging monsters. When he was killed, his spell unwove... mostly. Shifters are the descendants of those weakened slave-soldiers, incapable of purging the beast from their blood.

* Goblins: Woodsy little people who use ancient traditions of alchemy and witchcraft to ward off bigger threats (aka, humans). Travel the land in nomadic caravans.

* Orcs: Proud, warlike but honorable people from the cold northern lands. Come to the "main land" as merchants, sellswords and reavers.

* Kobolds: Inventive, arrogant and cocky little dragonlings who use mad magitek "science" to compensate for being so small and puny.

take the races from warhammer with all the dystopia attached to them but then add a SLIVER of hope

for example:

>Lizardmen are the abandoned children fo the old ones, they attempt to enact their great plan but they do not understand it themselves, they fight amongst themselves for interpretations among them, but slowly a few of them are actually attempting to understand the plan rather than following it through, slowly becoming more like their creators

Or Empire

>A huge sprawling empire where the population is cramped into claustrophobic cities, the countryside is infested with monsters so rural folk must all be supreme balls of steel badasses just to survive. But the nobles actually take the cause of humanity serious, sure there are witch hunters and opression, but slowly humanity is reconquering the wilds and life isnt completley shitty

Or take oldschool vampire counts

>Vampires rule over uneducated peasants with an iron fist, using them as a food source as they please, but they also consider themselves noble benevolent leaders, humans do not get drafted into the army because thats what the dead are for, also they bareley pay any taxes since vampires dont need any normal food
>>

I don't want to directly copy WHFB, but that is a helpful tip nonetheless - I actually do want to include Old School Chaotic Neutral Chaos as one of the "powers" in this setting.

Does anyone else hate the concept of "types of demons" in DND? These are beings of chaos and evil, from essentially the second most mutable place in the planes except from Limbo, but they're able to be easily catagorized? How does that fit their theme at all?

If you read the pre-Planescape stuff about demons, it outright states that the labels are just a convenience invented by mortals, and there's no hard rule that a marilith is always weaker than a balor, etc.
>>
>>54658444
Except hell and abyss, and by extension devils and demons are separate things in d&d. Infernal bureaucracy sure fits the former, but why latter?

Make a really good character concept that heavily involves being a moth, and then pitch it to the GM. It might only be fetishist bait, but if it's well done it won't matter.

What are some good systems for running games of medieval fantasy military strategy and politics?

Something in the veins of ASoIaF, Fire Emblem and Warcraft (pre-WoW).

Royal disputes, castle seizing, village raiding, knightly duels, capturing and rescuing royal hostages, all while leading small armies but still retaining the importance of heroes in the battlefield.

Traveller is a classic science fiction system first released in 1977. In its original release it was a general purpose SF system, but a setting was soon developed called The Third Imperium, based on classic space opera tropes of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, with a slight noir tint.
Though it can support a wide range of game types, the classic campaign involves a group of retired veterans tooling around in a spaceship, taking whatever jobs they can find in a desperate bid to stay in business, a la Firefly or Cowboy Bebop.

>Chasing a Rock into Zhodani Space Edition

pic related; it's the Rock in question.

>How would interstellar celebrity work in the Third Imperium?

I'd imagine you'd have most major celebrities known on a roughly sector-wide level, with the general public beyond that having not heard of any but the biggest or most venerable yet. The exception would likely be exports from the Imperial core sector, since that's where the biggest stars and the biggest budget productions would end up, and would likely be hot items for import via the X-boat system.
>>
If I release an album on Capital, and send it out over x-boat distribution, It'll take 15 weeks to reach Vland.

So they're 4 months behind what's happening.
If I got a J-2 tour ship, and played at each stop (and back), that tour would go for two years. (122 weeks, assuming 1 week in jump, 1 week on world. That's one sector away. That'd be the outer limit of a celeb's reach I'd think, short of people who are legendary in some way.

Personal celebrity would be limited to heads of state. By the time most artists would get noticed reaches the outer areas, they've almost certainly moved on from whatever they're doing.

For imperium-wide celebrity, it'd be more likely a franchise than anything else (Think about the popularity of Dr Who or James Bond) versus a specific person.

A grateful dead type situation, possibly with an evolving lineup, constantly touring, with followers could be interesting though.

Players are hired on a roadies for a touring group - hilarity ensues.

>For imperium-wide celebrity, it'd be more likely a franchise than anything else (Think about the popularity of Dr Who or James Bond) versus a specific person.

THIS. Not only franchises, but VR celebrities who exist only inside the computers of media megacorps; i.e. Gibson's Idaru.

Also, the Imperium has canonical "cultural regions" like Lancian, Sylean, Suerrat, etc. Such regions would make achieving celebrity easier within them and harder outside them. Forex: Everyone in the Sylean cultural region loves Shecky Dangerfield's comedy, but everyone not "hip" to Sylean culture doesn't get the joke.

The same effect will be at work with widespread Minor Race like the Bwap.

During the Rebellion those region of the Extents closest to the Imperium are constantly stirred to anti-Imperial actions by a device best described VR personality combined with an "iPhone" or digital assistant. (For a company rightfully accused of sticking to "retro" sci fi, GDW was really ahead of the curve here.) While the user initially enters personal preferences into the device, the device learns more about what you really like by monitoring your use of it. The device also comes with a audio/visual VR personality like Siri or Alexa, which also learns to talk, look, act, etc. more like what you prefer.

The fun part occured when the group manufacturing and/or distributing the device used it to disseminate constant low key anti-3I propaganda via the "tailored" VR personality.

It was a great idea which MT/DGP/GDW completely failed to examine.

>>Players are hired on a roadies for a touring group - hilarity ensues.

Cue John Ford's rightly famous adventure for Classic JTAS: Veedback.

The rest of the Warhammer Fantasy factions got carried over into 40k; it's time the Vampire Counts got the same treatment!

So far, we've worked out the general fluff for 40k equivalents of the different bloodlines and units from Fantasy, along with some sense of the VC's relationship with other factions. But how about something a little more practical for this thread? What would be some good plot hooks to fit them into a Dark Heresy or Rogue Trader game?

Quick summary the prior threads' re-imagining of the VC bloodlines:

>Lahmians
Descendants of Nerata, a radical tech priestess who discovered an ancient artificial intelligence (possibly a shard of the Void Dragon) calling itself Mekash while investigating ruins beneath the Martian deserts. It helped her adapt Necron nanotechnology to bond to human flesh, transforming her into the first cyber-vampyre. Eventually her heresy was discovered and she was forced to flee along with her followers, settling on the hive world of Lahmia IV in the Transylv'an Sector on the fringes of Imperial space near the Halo Stars. She quickly subverted the planet's government and has used it as a base to begin spreading the influence of biomechanical undeath across the sector.

>Von Carstein
Descendants of Inquisitor Vandersten, and Imperial nobleman and founding member of the Ordo Necros tasked with ridding the Imperium of the undead menace. Tempted by what he discovered in his investigations, he struck a pact with Nerata to cover up her activities in exchange for immortality. Though he lacks Nerata's expertise in cybernetic necromancy, his heresy has remained hidden thus far, allowing him and his bloodline to wield far greater political power beyond the Transylv'an sector without attracting the attention of the Inquisition.

>Blood Dragons
Members of a renegade Space Marine warband, remnants of the Bloody Tears chapter who were excommunicated by the Imperium when it was discovered that their chapter was created from the tainted gene-seed of the Night Lords. Rejecting the Chaos gods, they jouneyed to the Transylv'an sector, settling on a feudal world as a sort of knightly aristocracy until being tracked down by an Imperial expeditionary force. Desperately seeking an advantage in battle, they accepted the gift of undeath offered to them by Nerata. With incomparable martial prowess and discipline, they are now the most dangerous and visible of the cyber-vampyre bloodlines.

Howdy people

This beauty is a bar mace.

It bashes peoples skulls in!

I actually treat it as a quarterstaff in my games (5e), because why the fuck wouldn't you use two hands on that bitch

In fact, I treat most most bludgeoning weapons as quarterstaffs mechanically, and most piercing weapons as spears

I also have a nice little niche for 1d6/1d8 slashing weapons too.

I also treat most chopping swords as bog standard axes

Can't find any good pictures, but scythes are just spears in my games. One of my players whined that "it should do more damage when the blade is the other way! It can focus more force"

He rapidly learned otherwise when I took him out to the barn and showed him what happens when you try to hit a target with a scythe like that

I also like blunt weapons with a spike or hook on them. When my players are smart enough to describe their weapons with hooks or spikes I let them do piecing damage. I also let warhammers do that anyway, because who the fuck makes a warhammer that can't pierce?

I'm looking to start up a text-only game of Black Crusade on Saturdays. The catch is that all of the PCs must stay unaligned due to working with a daemon(ette) of Malice. There's more details on the roll20 page. No CSMs or advanced archetypes. Apps close Thursday evening!
