I've got a campaign running where my players are playing themselves in an alternate horror universe filled with Cryptids, Mythological Creatures and Lovecraft inspired horrors.

Its actually sort of fun, pick a monster of the week and throw it at them. Then they do some internet research to figure out how to defeat it.
>>
guess I'll just continue

>first session
>jack and i talk to some punk kids about smoking and eat some donuts
>aurora cooks some pasta for some very yelpers
>chief hikes the trails and sees some deer and a skunk
>but nothing really happens
>our dm before the campaign informed us that he would be doing a lighthearted slice of life type of thing so this was what we were expecting
>night comes and i get a drink with jack in auroras restaurant
>chief is just packing up to get back to home
>i forgot to mention that chief, jack, and i have a signal on some walkie talkies and we regularly talk
>chief tells us he's packing up and heading back into town and should be back in a few hours if he hurries
>we rp in the restaurant
>the dm is passing notes to chief
>chief goes quiet
>starts making rolls
>rapid note passing begins
>chief radios in that he's being followed by something and he had to take shots
>he's wounded
>we pay our tab and rush to the edge of town in our squad car and sprint onto the trail
>we hear more shots in the distance and chief is rolling like a fucking madman
>we run into chief a few minutes later and nearly get shot
>explains again that something was chasing him
>his back is torn the fuck up
>says the thing that chased him wasn't human
>we're a bit skeptical and take chief in back to town
>all while hearing something crunch leaves behind us the entire way back
>>

That sounds really cool, got any stories from it?

The phrase "Shooting Fish in a Barrel" comes to mind.

One member of my party is a celestial who doesn't sleep. The rest of us... who knows. If it were my secondary game party, where my character wields a dude as a weapon, then very likely.
>>
>>54671370
I suppose my character could get a phylactery that allowed him to not have to sleep... if he had the money for it. The other characters could do likewise. I don't think the lich needs to sleep either. The dragon might be the only one who has trouble since other than his physical strength, he doesn't have a lot going for him and doesn't have the money for a no-sleep phylactery. Then again, all we would have to do is tell our employers (a megacorp that I'm pretty sure is run by Satan) about him, and he would probably disappear somehow. Shipco is kind of terrifying like that...

My level 1 fighter, using a war-hammer and shield, usually forgoing the shield when he wanted to do some real damage.

I only got to use him in two sessions for a Curse of Straud campaign before it fizzled out, but he was the only one in the party to actually hit Straud during his first visit to the village.

You are the few my friend, rarely does a campaign actually conclude.

In a group been playing for 2 years and DM says we've "just finished the first episode, there's 4 more coming". Christ I don't wanna play a 10 year campaign. At least it's still fun for now and we have other games we play in.
>>
>>54670145
Never finished a campaign.
I had to quit, Gm had to quit, or they are ongoing. That having said after years of reading books, and imagining playing, I only started to play circa 8 months ago.

Closest I came was a game of Exalted, where I had some fun, but the rest of the party started to go full edgelord, did nothing about the "doomsday coming" scennario with plenty of preptime, while my character tried his best, and lately they have cut all sorts of in-game ties between PCs, because of the good/evil divide. So in the end I went with my character pursuing the solution that would be very likely to kill him, but could potentially save the world.

This mean retiring him, since it placed him way too far from the other PCs to have any interaction ever, and we all agreed we don't want this to become my personal adventure with the GM, while the rest watches us play. So I guess it can't really be counted in the finished campaign catergory.

Hey guys,

I'm doing a little worldbuilding in preparation for a campaign later on down the line, but I'm absolute crap on a bicycle when it comes to names.

Basically, what I'm looking at is some country based on Byzantium, with its eastern border dominated by a chain of castles, fortresses and walls (think the Caucasus mountains but more defensible), which it uses to hold off an unending demonic incursion that'd otherwise threaten to sweep across the whole empire. I figured on calling it The Bulwark Empire, but that's generic as fuck and sounds more like something other countries would call them. Any ideas?

(search for "Croshen /tg/" in 4plebs for part 1.)

You remember that kid?

The one who you tried to invite over to a birthday or to just hang out, but their parents were so batshit insane religious that everything in your house was demonic?

And every time you saw him, he looked like he wanted the earth to swallow him up?

That was me.

It's 2 am in a hotel room in Seattle. Rain beats against the windows and shows no sign of stopping.

Croshen's death rocks the world. Shieks in the middle east, businessmen in Thailand, people all over the world go down in flames as his main source of income- trafficking children for prostitution- is revealed for all to see. My only regret is that all I managed to do to Croshen was blow his balls off and put one .45 in his stomach. If he hadn't had a self-destruct button wired to blow his skyscraper to bits, I would have spent some time educating him on why you fucking leave kids alone. As it is, to spare his ignorantly innocent help, I had to settle for a head shot.

They found the kevlar and clothes I left behind. My name- my real name- is tied to Croshen indelibly as yet another one of his victims, luckily freed by an unidentified assassin's rampage. Fortunately, no one's put the two together, and right now it seems the focus is making sure there are no more kids being shuttled around by Croshen's people as well as locking up anyone who made a buck off of his ring.

A haircut and some fake scars and no one recognizes me. Lucky.

An Arizona mother whose son was found raped and buried in a dumpster in Thailand angrily tells a reporter Croshen deserved to die and that she hopes he burns in hell forever.

Amen, sister. Amen.

Anyway, you remember how I said I was that kid?

I suppose the logical question then is: how I went from that kid to this killer.

My answer is pretty much the same as any other nutjob who's been put on a couch.

I blame my parents.

Schlitterbahn, New Braunfels, Texas, 7 years ago.

I wasn't a kid, slathered in sunscreen, waiting in line, about to charge headfirst into the torrent or ride the Master Blaster.

I was the kid in a sweltering hot three piece suit with tie with stacks of hundreds of homemade pamphlets decrying the evils of homosexuality, rock and roll, video games, water parks, fast food, sodas, shorts, dnd, and basically every good thing under the sun, standing at the entrance, wondering what horrible sin I had committed in this life or the last one to be at this point.

Mom and dad said they were off 'preaching', which meant they were in an air-conditioned restaurant or shopping, letting me do their dirty work.

No food. No drink, not even a trip to the water fountain. A gate guard looks at me, sweating to death, with a mixture of disbelief and pity.

I've read the pamphlet. It's basically an invitation to a three hour sermon on how much you suck as a person and how you're going to hell no matter what, Jesus can't help you, and by the way, pay us $50 to spread the bad word.
I have to hand out all of these pamphlets or I get my ass beaten with a belt so badly I can barely walk.

People scowl at me. Some ask me if I believe all of this hateful crap. Others offer me a drink. I know what happens if I accept- 10 licks with the buckle end. One lick for every pamphlet left over.

I wonder if I'm in hell. Feels like it.

Eventually one of the lifeguards gets so pitying of me he tries to force water down my throat. I tell him if I'm not red-faced and raspy, my parents will beat me. He tells me no one is that cruel. I'd laugh if I wasn't so hot- he's never met my parents.

It's when I push away the cup of ice water for the second time my parents return, two hours early.

"What the hell is this?" my dad asks, gesturing to the stack of still unhanded out pamphlets. He doesn't let me respond. He drags me by the arm, ignoring the shouting guard, and throws me in the car.

(cont.)
>>
My defense- that they didn't give me the full time they said they would to hand out their pamphlets- only gets me backhanded across the face.

Mom holds me down as dad lashes me repeatedly, stopping to punch me as hard as he can. In the face. The back. The gut.

"Disobedience is rebellion and rebellion is the sin of witchcraft. Witchcraft damns your soul to hell! Jesus doesn't love you, and neither do I!"

On and on and on it goes.

I'll spare you the rest of the bloody details. More whipping and punching. A chair got broken.

Dear old mom and dad were what I like to call "Anti-Christians". They took the religion, twisted it into something alien and awful, designed to destroy someone from the inside out, made themselves the chosen prophets who would be spared for their righteous work of telling people "you're damned and there's nothing you can do about it", and they, I believed, genuinely expected to be paid and respected for this.

Saying their style of Christianity- if you could call it that- was controversial was like saying the sun was warmish. To give you an idea of how well we were received, let me give you an example.

We went to Westboro Baptist Church.

Fred Phelps kicked my father out and told him he wasn't welcome there anymore.

The man who protested soldiers funerals and sang songs about homosexuals burning in hell was disgusted by my parents so much he kicked them out after one hour.

They had done a number on me, however. I believed that out of every person in the world, I deserved to be treated this way, to be beaten, punished, preach their word and still go to hell anyway, because the bible they had made for me stated my name as being that of the Unredeemable. Yes. Tailor-made bible just to tell me I was beyond redemption.

I know this sounds like bullshit, and you're talking to someone who just killed twenty-something people, so believe what you want.

What was the final straw, then? What they did to other kids.
>>
I was mowing the lawn when our next door neighbor warned me about Mr. Grausam.

Mr. Grausam had tried to get her son to come over to his house, promising video games and candy. Her son, not being a dumbass, had run the fuck away and warned her. She talked to other parents, and they told similar stories.

One day, he skipped the video games and candy and just pulled a little girl off her bike, clamped a hand over her mouth, and dragged her inside his house.

He let her go before the cops arrived. I heard the gory details when I was passing out pamphlets. Grausam had 'touched her', they said.

I wasn't stupid. I knew that meant he had hurt her in a way she would never really heal from. Her mother wanted Grausam arrested. Her father went over and beat Grausam until a cop pulled him off.

Everyone in the neighborhood wanted Grausam gone.

Everyone but my parents.

Your party was killed, incapacitated or captured while fighting the BBEG; you managed to survive the battle relatively unharmed but it's imperative to finish your job. How do you proceed?
22 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Sneak past anything I can and then hit the BBEG as hard as possible in the opening round. I'm the party's main source of damage so it should be manageable and since the DM uses somewhat realistic damage rules his injuries should even the playing field.
>>
>>54668176
I have a related but similar story

It was the end of the session, and the rest of the party wanted to search for a direbat breeding ground in order to make a quick buck. We decided to continue this in the next session, which I had to miss, so me and the DM decided that my character thought that was a stupid plan and would instead go into town to get food and supplies for when they came back.

The party, save my character, died while looking for the breeding grounds. My character is slowly losing his grip as more party members join and die/get disappeared. He's losing face in the eyes of his benefactors as well as a result of the actions of the most recent iteration of the party, and wants to end things in a way that restores his honor as well as makes sure the only party member he likes anymore is put in a position to profit from his death.
>>
judge the situation

if they are still alive and i deem it possible to get away with, make efforts to free any remaining party members

if it seems to be possible at the current state, relaunch the attack and use what we "gained" to our benefit (if we at the very least managed to attain precious intel and/or weaken the BBEG)

if it seems unlikely to be possible alone/with the freed remnants of the party and time isn't overtly precious; recruit a new party, train and plan everything out with the knowledge accumulated from the last attempt. come back with a vengeance
i almost always play very diplomatic and calculating people, in a similar vein as this, i kinda consider it to be one of my biggest RP flaws, but i think it's party because of the type of person that i am but also that the types of games i've played in has shifted me towards that.

Is it ever fair for a betrayal or some other tragedy to be nigh-unpreventable, or at least preventable only through dumb luck?

In my game, there was an important NPC who served as an informant for my character, and was my character's trusted sibling. Although they seldom met my character in person, they kept in touch remotely, gave intel, and told my character where to find more info.

Last session, this sibling told my character to visit a location for intel. (The GM prompted me to go there, twice, out-of-character.) Nothing happened there. My character then learned that the informant NPC killed another NPC, who was important to the game's overall story and one of my character's two best friends. My character was essentially lured away in a ruse, although this was not crucial to the traitor's plan; it was an extra precaution.

The GM let me know that there was foreshadowing that my character's sibling was turning bad and that, in theory, I could have picked up on such things. The GM pointed out all of these foreshadowings. My character was the only one privy to them. I missed every single one of them. They were all grounded in subtle social cues, and, as the GM knows, I am terribly autistic and unable to glean such nuances. I pointed out that many of them were too obtuse and long stretches, and the GM conceded that they were.

I also pointed out that there was no foreshadowing at all that the victim NPC was ever in danger, which the GM acknowledged. The traitor NPC never even brought up the victim NPC in previous conversations. Therefore, even if I did conclude that my character's sibling had gone bad, I would have had to leap to the idea that the victim NPC had to be placed under heavy security for a protracted period of a week or longer (because nothing was stopping the traitor NPC from waiting until the victim NPC was vulnerable, which was most of the time). The traitor took a pure stealth/disguise approach for the assassination.

Was this handled properly?

>(The GM prompted me to go there, twice, out-of-character.)
>Was this handled properly?
No. If the GM deliberately influenced you OOC so you'd fall for the ruse, he failed to properly set up the scenario.
Other than that, you should have had at least one roll of whatever-the-fuck your system uses for picking up on social wrongness.
>>
>>54668837

>you should have had at least one roll of whatever-the-fuck your system uses for picking up on social wrongness.

Both my character and my character's sibling have supremely strong deception abilities, well above anyone else's rolls, ourselves included.

In the past, the GM had sporadically allowed my character to make rolls to piece together deceptions based on raw logical deduction rather than social cues (e.g. "Wait a minute, they claimed that X, but that does not seem logically sound due to Y reason"). However, those were rare, and no such roll was called for in this scenario.
>>
>>54669020
A player cannot properly use their intuition to pick up on social cues in a TTRPG. This is because a large portion of social cues are non-verbal or depend on the intricacies of speech that your GM will not have the acting talent to mimic.
This is why intuition skills or "detect lie" skills exist.

Any circumstance in which said skills categorically do not work is effectively denying the player any ability to discern the truth and should be held as poor GMing, even if the system permits such. Even if the NPC was made by the PC to be a perfect liar.
