I'M BAAACK

When we last left off, our hero, Gabriel Primus, the Mighty Golem, had just laid with his love interest, Holly. Because the dice Gods love you guys.
Oh, uh, some other stuff happened before that.
You met with the Fylkir, the head of the Imperium, and with the Imperial Smith and Imperial Arch Mage. The Arch Mage upgraded your Repair Gel to work on organic beings.
The Imperial Smith began forging armor and body mods for you.
You had dinner with Hollys parents, who had apparently inherited a large sum of money from a relative that passed away. At first they were a bit iffy on the whole 'our daughter is friends with a Golem' thing. But your stone tongue is more silver, and you got on their good side, and even convinced them to let Holly join you on your quest to find the secrets of your past, as well as fund your expedition! You just happened to leave out the part about flying into a war zone...

Now then, to begin

You are currently in the Imperial Palace, picking up your armor from the Master Smith.

Now, /tg/ I want to try a little something.
What kind of armor did you order from the Master Smith?
Give me a picture. Or a description. Anything.
Tell me what you want.

What about metal bracers that project runes across the body for armor? Rather than an actual physical armor. Bracers, genie-like.

The moment you visited the Medicae Bay to check on how the autopsies were going you felt completely sick and fell unconscious, at the same time from their corpses several Necron constructs emerged and started to devour everything on their wake, be it organic or artificial and dead or. Why did you suddenly fell was something that both puzzled and worried you; was it really because spending so much time so deep underground was starting to take a toll on you or maybe because you were somehow connected to the Necrons and that activation affected you somehow?

To defeat all those invading scarabs you needed to create two traps, an explosive one with some grenades and another that was basically a stockpile of flammable gases and liquids that ended creating a massive thermal deflagration once you managed to attract the remaining creatures towards its core and detonated it by using a handmade Molotov. Still, alien machinery and inhuman circuits made those devourers be able to even survive such inferno, not even being in the center of a massive bonfire was enough to kill the entirety of them; to completely finish them off you also had to discharge several shots of your acidic plasma on them until all the charred husk that became the remains of the explosions ended turning into a small melted mound to completely assure that they were destroyed.

You had saved as many people as you could but most of the nurses, medics and patients had perished in that encounter, the outcome of that attack wasn’t completely negative thought, you had managed to discover a secret of the Necron possessed humans that you didn’t knew before. They each have had a canoptek scarab inside of them that activates a few days after their death, if that scarab is destroyed then the body won’t be able to create more copies of the necron construct and it will simply be a normal corpse, there was also the very faint hope of a possible scarab subtraction procedure that might and only might return those humans to their former selves.

You walked with all the survivors towards the main entrance door and with a quick movement you pressed the activation runes that awakened the disruptor field of your falcata shaped power sword shortly before using it to cleave an exit from the debris and scrap metal sealed door. The survivors, mostly medics and individuals with little to no combat experienced that just happened to be there, helped you by removing the pieces that managed to cut. After little more than five minutes the first rays of electrical light started to make their way onto your side, you had finally managed to open a breach.

“Stand back!” You say at them, who immediately complied.

You grab your Meltaser Pistol and aim at the door; you have wanted to use this beautiful piece of technology since a long time and finally you will honour its machine spirit with a great task according to its purpose and creation. With a flash of thermal and electrical energy you see how from its red hot muzzle an invisible ray of agitating air and ionizing beams discharges over the remnants of the door. Instantly it starts to melt and become electrified; the slag turning metal getting a orange hue and then completely red hot while several white sparks form from its core and start flying in all directions until the door is no more and the only thing that remains is a small melted aperture.

“The wounded ones first, go go!” You were pretty sure that all the scarabs had been killed but as a caution measure you would be the last one to leave the hospital.

When they were all out you finally left the cursed hospital and grabbed several pieces of scrap around to melt them with your Meltaser pistol and once again seal the entrance. Thankfully you noticed that there were several people around willing to help you and that they were gladly throwing pieces of debris and scrap to help you with your task.

This was nothing but a small victory in a sea of defeats. Your resources were running pretty low, especially medicines now due to most of them becoming devoured or destroyed by the Scarabs. In the faces of the small group of survivors that you had managed to gather there wasn’t only fear and hunger now but also a glimpse of hope in their eyes. Sooner or later the Imperium would notice this invasion and would do something about it; you had the promise of the Inquisitor about this…the Omnissiah and the Emperor protects you all but in the meantime you’ll have to protect them by acting as their pawn and agent.

Firearm ranges in RPGs.

Now, generally speaking, it seems to me that listing squares or even meters for firearm ranges in an RPG is kind of a useless exercise.

In reality pistols and shotguns generally have the same effective range (roughly 30 meters, depending on what you're firing), non-precision rifles (assault rifles, battle rifles, etc) have generally the same range, again (300-600 meters), and so on and so forth. On to the RPG part.

If you're in firefight in a room, everything is in range, generally, and if you're in a firefight outside, I've personally never played on a battlemat large enough to properly encompass ranges beyond around 50 to 100 meters or squares. Generally, listing an actual numerical value for range seems pretty useless.

So, here's my question: Is there a solution to this? Should you just have range categories similar to what Shadowrun does? Obviously there would be situations in which you could easily abstract a long range firefight or a player firing support with a sniper rifle or machinegun, but generally it seems like a total non-point.

>generally it seems like a total non-point.
I agree, but many players like useless calculations like that as it gives them a feeling of verisimilitude, even if it is false precision.

a sniper rifle would be useless

But a character walking around one manning a Gatling gun sounds pretty role play-y to me

What, you've never said "Ok, each square is twenty meters"?

I've been in lots of tabletop fights where it mattered that the sniper rifle had a better range than the assault rifle. Dark Heresy, Deadlands, lots of outside fights that start at long range. It's an interesting and common tactical scenario.

Does this really never happen to you guys? Why not? If you have a rifle, why aren't you opening up from long range?

I've been thinking about writing an RPG book for the fantasy world I'm storytelling in, but I'm shite at drawing creatures. I've paid about 10$ each for simple character art portraits before, but what would a somewhat detailed black and white sketch of an animal cost me you think?

Really depends on the artist but if that's what they've asked before that's what I'd count on.

The bigger problem is probably quantity. Ain't much of a bestiary with only one beast in it.
>>
>>44709542
/ic/ would probably be more knowledgeable about this sort of thing than most people here. but at the same time /ic/ is full of assholes so maybe you'll get nothing.
I'm confident however that it will cost much more than you expect if you want any kind of quality.
I'd recommend you don't start looking into the illustrations until you've done a fair bit of the ground work on your bestiary first.
>>
>>44709542
I would more or less finish your beasts and then commission in bulk instead of paying per portrait. Unless you want to go for multiple artists which might be cool variety.

Try something like fiverr maybe

I live in Southeast Asia and want to start a weekly tabletop group. My players consist of

>one near-fluent English speaker from the Czech Republic
>two Vietnamese English teachers who speak conversational but limited English
>zero people who have ever heard of DnD

I painstakingly created an extremely visual, very beginner-friendly combat/leveling system and plan to use free-form role play with a bit of dice rolling for the storytelling segments.

How fucked am I? Would really like input from more experienced GMs on how to make this game work. The theme is Pirates of the Caribbean-esque swashbuckling with supernatural elements throughout.

How is this a downside? Just make up whatever system or use something simple like Savage Worlds and have fun. Don't weigh players down with mechanics unless they are of the very specific type of person who like that kind of thing.
>>
DnD is a pretty shitty game for beginners.
>>
Try to begin as rules-lite as possible, and slowly ease them into the system.

Encourage and reward both creative thinking, and problem solving as much as possible.

As a DM, try to incorporate their ideas as much as possible, and try not to resort to, "You can't do that."

“Leave it to midgaardians to find endless alternatives to fish on top of bread approaches, there's more creative uses to cereals than there are to thigh bones”, leave it to Tahenohan to make analogies that certainly everyone will perfectly understand with zero guesswork and no room for misunderstandings.

“Well actually pasta isn't just from Midgaard... Don't you have it too in the West?”, Bryld wonders. You're not really sure about the actual origins of this dish, or pasta in general, you just know you're familiar with it.

“It's overcooked”, your father grumbles. Not that that stops him from eating.

“We're more about rice”, Tahenohan answers, “And flatbread, and pies, and piadines, or tortillas depends on how far West you go. We sometimes put cheese and fish on top of it and let them cook along with the bread”.

“Isn't that just pizza?”, Bryld wonders, confused, “And it's not overcooked, this is how pasta should be”.

“It's overcooked”, your father insists with a frown, “It should be soft but still feel solid under your teeth, this is almost glue”.

“It's how it's supposed to be”, Bryld insists, “Besides pasta is just a side dish”.

“You what? Are you serious?”.

“I don't think anyone outside of Verdenia eats pasta as a main dish”, Bryld sounds quite sure of herself.

“That's not true. For example, Aldebaran has a long tradition of proper linguine and-”.

“Now now, don't be too rough on my familiar”, Astreya intervenes with a smile, patting your hand, “The beauty of cooking is that it's different from one hearth to another, and I wouldn't have it any other way”.

That shuts your father up. Well, he keeps grumbling but you have no idea what he's saying under his breath. Meztli, of course, has not spoken a single word, but she does eat.

>”What are the creative uses of thigh bones?”.

>When a troll lose their power, their body no longer keeps up with their insane metabolism and eating habits, causing them to get fat and heavy. Their fur falls out as it isn't deeply entrenched in their skin in the first place, since their body grows it back so fast normally

>But ogres have no such luck. Their low powered brain matter is permanent now, meaning their brain is almost stuck in a child-like state of development
>Often ogres end up hurting people by accident, trying to play or hug people and crushing them or going into childish tantrums that destroy walls and end lives
