Why is this industry still stuck on books?

Most of the people I know play with PDFs off of laptops or tablets anyways, for the search functionality; but why is everyone still doing hardcovers and PDFs?

Sure they look pretty, but they're not very practical. It's a massive ordeal to errata something that's broken, it's shit for organization and searching purposes, and there's a ton of overhead for printing hard copies.

I would think some kind of entirely digital medium would be the best approach.

What do you guys think of this stuff? Is there a good reason to stick with printed books, or is it just one of those things where the industry isn't keeping up with the times?

Because holding a product you bought in your hands is more rewarding than a PDF. Psychological at least.

Therefore, people willingly will pay more for print-media than digital media.
>>
>>45549177
>Psychological reasons.

Okay fair enough. I feel like going digital they could probably monetize somehow with microtransactions or expansion packs or subscriptions or some shit, but fair enough.

Are there any rational reasons that make sense, on the consumer end, or would it just be better, 100%?

I'm thinking of how much easier it is to play Pathfinder using d20PFSRD than using the actual Pathfinder books, and wondering if it wouldn't be better digital from the start.

I mean you could still sell minis and dice and maps and shit, but I don't know anybody who actually busts out their hard copies if there is a decent, searchable PDF, let alone a web site. I basically never pull out my PF books at game anymore, despite having several hundred dollars worth of them sitting on a shelf.
>>
>>45549177
Also, even if people are willing to pay more for a hard copy, a digital copy doesn't have all those overhead costs, so the profits may be comparable or maybe even better.

You are Irue Valen, and you are a lot of things. Blood Heir to House Valen, participant in a rite of initiation to prove your worth as an adult, leader of a small group of knights who had once been brigands... The list goes on, but none of that particularly matters to you right now. You stand with your arms crossed, just within the woodline; Staring out across the grassy plains leading down to the town of Carona. You had few good memories of this town, nor its inhabitants, and you were beginning to feel as if the gurgling distaste you held for the place had been mutual all along.

This had been the place you vividly remember sinking your teeth into an infuriatingly self-important man. This had been the place you discovered that no one knew who you were, the place you had sent your maid and Testament only for them to be caught up in a politician's scheme and locked away. Where that same scheme had lead to the blatant abduction and possible framing of another of your Testament, and where you had nearly died in a mineshaft cave in.

That last part wasn't strictly Carona's fault, but it was close enough in proximity that you felt perfectly comfortable lumping it on the pile of reasons you had to be bitter. Seemingly without fail, every encounter you had with this place had resulted in slight, injury, insult, or some piece of you being torn away by its spiteful maw.

Crimson eyes narrowed at the distant walls, the sound of your knights assembling somewhere further into the woods vaguely filtering into your ears, and you felt your teeth grit in a deepening scowl.

Was this what it was like to have enemies? This smouldering sensation buried in the pit of your stomach every time you laid eyes upon it. The stubborn and cemented feeling that you would never get along with something?

"The knight captain approaches."

Asche's warning sounded off from just behind you, your m/aid having taken up her customary position to your left as if the months of separation hadn't changed a thing. You tear your eyes away from the view of the township below, as well as your overlaid fantasy of a pit of flames consuming the place, and turn back to see your knight captain approaching with a resigned gait.

"Nice view, huh?" Dullem brings a hand up to cover his eyes as he takes in the sweeping grassy plains around Carona, "Too much open field, I think. My old village was squat between the woods and the sea." He smiled nostalgically, letting his hand drop as he shook his head. "Can't say I like being able to see forever... At any rate, the knights are nearly ready... But what exactly am I supposed to tell them we're doing here?"

This is a strategy meeting! Once things get underway, you won't be able to change orders very easily, if at all, so it's important your forces know what you expect of them. As this is the first time you're a potential war effort, there are some things to go over briefly.

Night has fallen on the city of Arcadia. As citizens walk on the streets from their workplaces to see their families, danger still looms around every corner.

Rogues, brutes, and criminals all want to harm these people. Whether it's a scheme to poison the city, or an armed gunman in the streets, every day Arcadia inches closer to a total disaster should these everyday villains succeed.

There is hope, however. Where there is shadow, there must be light. Heroes have come out in full force, armed with powers, technology, or pure strength to help the helpless and aid those without aid.

You, are one such hero.

---

The figure clad in dark armor you've been pursuing over the rooftops makes another impossible leap, leaping the width of a street onto another building. The sword on his back is easily his size and weight--how he swung that hunk of metal at you earlier is a mystery to you.

Still, questions don't matter as much as getting him apprehended.

You make a flying leap after him, barely catching yourself onto the edge of the roof and climbing upwards.

The swordsman has turned back to look at you, his sword dragged along the ground to his front.

"Well, hello there. You're persistent, I'll give you that. I don't think I caught your name. So rude, all you wanted to do was chase me without so much as introducing yourself."

"Oh," you start, "I fully intend to! I'm..."

I smile happily, leaning against Miranda, as she squirms around uncomfortably in her uniform. She smiles and leans back against me.

"So, what do you want to do today?" She asks happily, looking up at me with her beautiful

"I don't know" I say shrugging, as I rest my head on her shoulder "What do you want to do?"

"Whatever you want to do" She huffs, puffing her red cheeks out "I don't really care, I mean, it'll be fun so long as it's with you"

"Yeah, but I don't know what I want to do"I huff, puffing my cheeks out as slump forward over the lunch table, laying down on it"Why can't you choose"

"Because I want you to choose!" Miranda whimpers as she lays down next to me

"Er...maybe you should just decide later?" Kandence says, making both of us look up at her as her tail swishes back and forth slowly

Last we left off we had eradicated the demon threat in the lower caves, however the victory came at great cost, butchering our army down to 2 companys of 100 men, nearly half of which are wounded and combat ineffective. We have finally secured the southern caves and thoroughly searched deep into the underdark for further taints of chaos influence, and have so far found nothing. Unfortunately, from a count of the dead, a few of our miners, who turned to chaos have somehow escaped the slaughter of their master and fled into the underdark. On the surface both our fishing town and western settlements are doing well, and our garrison on the surface has given the Palmese an image of complete normalcy. What are the orders of the council?

A. Pull everyone back the northern caves, seal off the south

B. Resettle the southern caves immediately and begin mining once more

C. Burn every trace and taint of chaos, including the corpse of the demon

D. Resume mining and recover the corpse of the demon for research purposes

E. Other

I strongly recommend that anyone who is the new to the civ, please read the archives, as they will give you a much better context of what we are doing, and a feel for our civs style and culture

you are fighting a single enemy

he wears a full suit of plate armor , in combination with chainmail and padded clothing
his weapon is a regular arm's length longsword
the battlefield is a plain grasland
running is not an option because reasons
you have equal skill levels
you can choose any non-magic build
you can choose any close-combat weapon
you can choose any armor (that is at best as good as your enemy's)

post opinions and strategies , no specific system used for this encounter (might as well be real life in year x)

Chain and warhammer.

also , if you choose a two-handed weapon , this dude will use a polehammer
>>
The same armour as him, a pollaxe, and a dagger.
Close distance, wrestle him to the ground using the pollaxe as leverage, then stab him through his visor (or armpits, or any other gap in his armour) with the dagger until he bleeds out.

Maximum Panache edition

Fantasy Craft is a d20 P&P RPG using the OGL. It's geared towards cinematic play where every character can contribute, with solid mechanics designed to give groups lots of flexibility to tailor games to individual preferences. Rather than just a set of bolt-on additions to the OGL d20 system, Fantasy Craft tears it all down and rebuilds from the ground up, steering clear of the major pitfalls of other OGL games and aiming for a more cinematic, narrative-focused style.

Noteworthy points:
>Drastically reined-in magic system putting casters on equal footing with non-casters
>Classes and the game as a whole designed to ensure everyone can contribute in a wide range of circumstances, even outside their primary niche
>Separate cash and Reputation economies keep mundane gear relevant and magic items special
>Custom monster and NPC design is a breeze
>Optional Campaign Qualities tweak mechanics to suit your preferred style and tone

Become The Vampire 39

It's Monday morning, you find yourself staring up at the ceiling. It's going to be a pretty full day, all things considered. You've got to smooth things over with Sammy at some point, deal with Jennifer and her attempts to get information out of you, Tobias will probably be eager to show off his new angelic powers and Athena hasn't come back after heading off to get ice cream with Andrea so things either went wonderfully or terribly. Either way you need to take your daughter aside for a little chat at some point.

You sit up slowly and notice Meliora asleep in her bed, for the first time in a while. Presence is hovering over her, looking contemplative, and as your eyes start to focus you notice what she's working on. You've heard of the game “Stuff on my cat”, but never “Stuff on my haunt victim's android roommate”. There's a stack of objects ranging from books to metal tools carefully arranged on top of Meliora in a tower that jiggles with each breath she takes. Presents seems torn between topping it with a water balloon or a cream pie.

Same system as Become The Dragon Quest. If you don't know what that is, it's best of three d20 rolls. I name a stat that sums up what you're trying to do, and if I don't name a relevant skill, you try to fill in the blank based on what you're trying to accomplish. “Break open the door” might be Strength based, but if you've been playing baseball after school and there's a lead pipe nearby, you could apply your Baseball skill to the roll. A 20 on the die is a crit threat, and if either of the other two rolls is 20 or higher after mods, it's a critical. A crit fail is when you have two or more 1s. So far this system has worked out well enough. We'll get into combat rules as needed, but in basic terms you have wounds, not HP, and the worse the wounds, the more penalties you accrue while doing other things.

Most Important Rule:
Have fun.

Salvation seemed like an illusion, you had managed to save a few ones from the Necron Invasion that was developing on your old homeworld but now that you had already managed to escape from the planet you were far from being safe; for starters the group of survivors that had managed to escape while you were dueling the Necron Lord where now nowhere to be found and even in this Geostationary Space Station there were enslaved and Possessed humans that unwillingly fought for the vile aliens.

The first thing that your electronic lens saw when the doors of the Elevator opened were a desolated combat ground, there were dozens of bodies here and there and several pyres created to burn the Possessed ones and avoid their post-mortem release of Scarabs. Gun casings and damage caused by solid slugs, energy projectiles and explosions could be seen and smelled in most areas, some parts of the Station were so damaged that their Gravitonic Systems had been affected and they thus completely lacked artificial gravity or had a superheavy and near crushingly mortal one. On the distant corridors and walls several remnant Possessed enemies roamed in a wayward manner as they simply searched for any trace of Imperial life to erase, avoiding them was easy as the Station was so big and ample that there was always an alternate path to take to avoid enemy contact.

Even if the Station had been attacked weeks ago the food that was in its bars and restaurants were so pumped with artificial conservatives that they would still remain edible for at least another century, after eating and drinking plenty your squat group got as much ammo as it could and advanced towards where the local Adeptus Mechanicus Cathedral was located to search a telecommunication beacon powerful enough to talk with the Navy Ships that were fighting in the distance.
>>
>>45535296
As you all advanced you were able to see the dogfighting between the Imperial and Necron ships and how for each Necron destroyed ship the Navy lost at least ten. Even if the combat didn’t seemed to favor the Imperium they needed to be contacted to be informed of the Chronorganic Oxydizer and everything that you had discovered so far… otherwise all the Drop-pods and troops sent down there would die even before they have a chance of combating and the losses will be massive.

When you all reached the Cathedral you saw a crudely painted graffiti saying "REBELLED SERVITORS GO AWAY!”. Locked inside there was a paranoid survivor from outside of the Cult Mechanicus that thought that the Possessed ones were Servitors in the search of rights instead of alien slaves. Your attempts at diplomacy with him failed and in a fear fueled schizophrenia he ended tolling the gargantuan copper bell that lied on top of the Cathedral. The chimming bell’s noise was so loud that all the aimless Possessed of the Station were able to hear it and like mere primitive animals became attracted to the source of the sound.

You quickly came with another solution; you had come to this dammed forge world on your own Ship, luckily it would still be docked and intact enough to allow for communication with the rest of the ships. You headed into a nearby terminal and entered the name of your ship for its search. Due to the combat and lack of maintenance rituals the network of the Station was badly damaged and what should have been a quick and near instantaneous search would turn into an excruciatingly long task. While the computer was processing your order the first wave of the Possessed started making their approach.

"Calculate every bullet, to the last one! Pray to the Emperor or the Omnissiah and ask for good aim for we have to kill each and all of them with the minimum stray shots!"

You grabbed your huge Lascannon and charged a new Gigathule Power-Pack inside of it.

“Defend the computer for your lives depend on it! Activate your magnetic soles or grab onto something solid, I’m going to create a breach to engulf those wretched souls into the oblivion that they deserve!”

As you ascended you overlooked the surrounding areas and saw three possible targets that could be shot to create an atmospheric breach. The first one was a great rectangular window that lied not very far away, if broken it would create a breach that would only last for a minute at most as those windows have safety measures that cover them after being broken, the second one was massive dome shaped Rose Window that lied above your heads and whose intricate designs depicted a Stellar Chart, unlike the rectangular window this one seemed like it didn’t had any safety measures and thus if broken it would stay unsealed ad infinitum; the third option was the furthest one and was in a corridor from which most of the Possessed ones seemed to come, it was a Rocket Promethium deposit that lied about a mile ahead, if shot it would create a great explosion that could kill most of the incoming enemies, the sudden breach should kill any remaining ones, this was the most destructive option but if anything went wrong your forces and the searching computer could be affected as well.

You are Tsukuda Ryouta, a Shinigami of the 12th Division with the unique role of an investigator of abnormal occurrences.

The arrival of a bizarrely mutilated corpse has provided you with a new mission. The briefing is, as usual, transpires in Urahara's seldom used office.

"The deceased's name is Tatsu Shin, an unseated officer of the 5th Division. Apparently they took it upon themselves to investigate a series of murders committed in Northern Rukongai's 4th District. Well, it seems that their investigator bit off more than he could chew, and turned out like this." The Captain explains. Was that a joke about the fact that the upper half of the victim's head is missing? His tone is somehow vague in its seriousness, sounding neither obviously sarcastic nor particularly grave. "They sent this to the 4th first, but they only determined the 'cause' of death, and not the means by which the victim was killed. So the medical crew passed it on to us. The real meat here is for us to figure out, Ryouta-kun."

"If we really are dealing with a survivor of Kurotsuchi's experiments, then it will be hard to predict this Quincy's abilities even despite our impressive amounts of data. So much for all the suffering those people had to go through at his hands... It's actually because of him that this is so difficult." He gives you a folder. Inside is a thick stack of documents describing some of the conducted experiments. You're fairly certain that you're not a researcher anywhere near the previous Captain's caliber, but it's hard to comprehend the purpose behind these tests other than torture.

"This is top secret information, so please don't tell anyone about this, Ryouta-kun." He says, as if asking a buddy for a small favor.

"Hollowification experiments?" You read a part of it aloud.

"Hollows are like poison to the Quincy. Those two types have complete incompatibility with each other, much more so than humans and Shinigami. It seems that it didn't sit right with Kurotsuchi, and he tried to make it work anyway. Unfortunately for us, those experiments add yet another layer of unpredictability to this mission."

Perhaps unknowingly, Kurotsuchi Mayuri followed Urahara Kisuke's footsteps. Coincidentally, his efforts, too, have resulted in tragedy. Perhaps that area is best left untouched and forbidden.

"Your skills are perfect for this mission. You should be able to identify the anomaly with ease, no matter what kind of form it takes. Then, you'll have to report it to us, and we'll figure out a way to deal with it. You should probably think of this as a scouting mission instead of an investigative one. I doubt the Quincy could be as inconspicuous as a normal soul residing in Rukongai considering its origins." As you pack the documents back into the folder, Urahara takes it and puts it away. "Our reputation is already poor, and I'd rather not let this kind of thing leak to the public. This is why I'd like our Division - as well as you personally - to handle this. But try to avoid taking the risk of actually getting rid of it by yourself."

"Couldn't the target be a Shinigami with a specific Shikai?" You ask. Your Captain nods.

"It's not impossible, but there should be no Shinigami deployed to that District at the moment. If you see any, report them to us immediately, and then question them. The Denreishinki will be fully functional and at your disposal."

You nod.

"...And if you ever get bored, don't forget that we've added some games to it. Like the one where you stack up blocks to make a line, or the one where you chase squares while trying to not hit your tail..."

You nod again.

There are two ways to approach the mission that you can think of: you could go plain-clothed and hope that the locals cooperate with you, or you could go in uniformed and use authority to leave them no choice. The risks of prolonging your investigation are uncertain, much like the risks of not utilizing subtlety.

...

>Be subtle. Don't wear your uniform to the 4th District.
>Make it quick. Go in uniformed and try to get to the bottom of it as soon as possible.
>Other. (Write-in).

Held a retro-future dieselpunk space RP for a couple of sessions. It's pretty great with player interaction, since they really are encouraged to shape the world with you. It's great.

Masters of Umdaar was a great FAE World, released in the Fate Patreon and released PWYW at drivethru. It's technofantasy in the vein of Masters of the Universe. I really enjoyed the artwork.
I ran that a couple of times.
I was seriously thinking about doing a G.I.Joe/M.A.S.K. type thing with FAE as a follow up, but then I remembered M.A.S.K. sucked.

Pic related.
One of the few things I found below par were some of the included stunts were unbalanced with each other on the same page.

I am interested in getting into the Tabletop scene but I'd like to know what would be a decent mix to get my foot in the door. I've never played anything like this before but it seems wicked fun once you get the hang of it.

None of them, because Pathfinder is a bad game. Play D&D 5e instead.
You can get pregenerated characters from DM's Guild and your local gaming store probably hosts Encounters.

Play the stuff that appeals to you, this isn't rocket science.

Play what you want senpai. It'll be easiest to play something you enjoy and have ideas how to play.

Keep in mind though people will groan if you roll an elf ranger orphan or something cliche. Just put work into making the character your own.
