>>You are AZURE, a machine with a mind, and you and your companions had recently looted an ancient lab dating from before the Great War in search of biomedical supplies. You succeeded.

Suspended in a chemically neutral oxygenated liquid, Isha floats within a medical cryopod. The readout is quickly spilling out information about her damage- a lot of internal hemorrhaging, several broken ribs, minor nutritional problems, and a major infection.

Dave peers at the screen, frowning. The readout bleeps as it downgrades 'major infection' to 'minor', as the nanotechnology flooding Isha's body is quickly breaking down the infection- while at the same time promoting cell growth and supplying important structural nutrients to the needed locations.

"... This feels almost like cheating." He says, peering at you. "It's cheating, isn't it?"
"That was one question. The answer is yes." You respond, your spider-shaped shell propped on his shoulder. Your newly-repaired leg still continues to stick now and then, but it's loosening up as you use it. "Welcome to Old Power technology."

Dave just scoffs, and limps over to the second pod to examine the injured Free member there.

Someone knocks on the door, and walks in without hesitation- it's Mike.
"Hey, Azure." He says. "Can I have a moment to talk?"
"Very well." You say, and spring onto his shoulder. He flinches, but walks out into the hall. "Why is that?"
"We've been discussing you quite a bit. Abel, I, and Isha between sessions in the 'pod." He says. "We'd normally wait to do this when Isha's out of the tube, but right now Kate is distracting the current leaders of the Free. So we're doing it now."

The conference room is as large as always, but sitting there is merely Tandi, Abel, and now you and Mike.

"What is going on?" You ask, peering at the three of them. Your mother looks nervous. Mike looks determined... and Abel just looks relaxed.

"We're considering the idea of telling the Free about you." Abel says. "We've been discussing a merger between our two groups, and making a real push for the city. But, well, how we're going to do it is up to you."
"Up to me?" You ask.
"Isha overheard you guys discussing making your own city-state somewhere, using Old World technology." Abel says. "... And as much as I love this city, and as much as I've worked to save it from its rulers, I can't say it's a bad idea."
"But that's not the only idea these numbnuts had." Tandi calls out, rolling her eyes. "Another idea is to give you a promotion. Make you a fourth vote for the Initiative. Give you a real choice in where things are going."
"Basically what she said." Abel gives a pointed look to Tandi. "It's just... The initiative had been falling apart, before you arrived. And the Free were losing, without enough men or firepower to win the way they were trying. But now that you're here, we've been... well, not quite winning, but succeeding. If we make a push, claim the citadel- the Acropolis, then we can take control. Reorganize the city. Help people. And for that, we need your brain in a leadership position."

Mike doesn't say anything, his arms simply crossed.

[Note, this isn't formatted to be copy pasted or even directly made into a comment, but can be reworded easily enough if people agree with it]

As much as we're a fan of giving ourselfs more power and weight, this toes a dangerous line, because you have to remember, we are not and never will be human, and as such cannot represent anyones interests but our own in any effective manner. By putting us on there leadership board they'd be weakening the image of the people representing the people, and also run the risk of eventually having a skynet-esque takeover of everything.

From a philisophical standpoint I'm not sure how I feel about this.

Good to see you exabyte

Striking out on our own seems like the safest and best way to conserve life. If we make a push for the Acropolis, and it fails, we will be so much worse off than before Azure woke up, not to mention all that sweet tech we stole from the city, and recovered from the OP lab would likely fall back into angry sisters' hands. Not to mention that the city is filled with quite a few unknown factors.

Promotion might be nice but I don't see the need for it right now and some people might not react well to an AI in a leader position.

You are Sascha, formerly of the Goathorn Tribe, and now a slave and spy of the mighty Stonetusks. You are honored to be able to make your own meager contributions towards the glory of your new masters, which is why you and your party have traveled deep into the Howling Mountains, into the camp of your masters' enemy, Slaagyr.

So far things have gone well, you have been recruited to Slaagyr's forces under the guise of tribeless warriors from the west, by the cragfolk chieftain Snowfox. From what you have seen of the cragfolk forces, they chafe under Slaagyr's leadership, unhappy at their own weakening position within his hierarchy, and the unpleasant company of cannibals, ogres and strange summoned things they are forced to keep.

While this information is no doubt valuable to your masters, you still know very little beyond that and a general estimate of cragfolk numbers. You have no idea of the numbers of the ogres or the cultists, their capabilities or their plans, and you have yet to meet Ludger, the other cragfolk chieftain, or the foreign sorcerer Arban.

You awaken alone in the large, if rather cramped tent set aside for the Snowfox, your companion for the night having slipped out while you slept. Reluctantly, you sweep aside the thick furs covering you, tugging on your leathers quickly against the mountain chill. It's still early morning, at a guess, and it seems you have been left to your own devices.

What now?

>CURRENT SOUL: OIHAN ALZADOR

A great feeling of gut wrenching guilt had now invaded your body making you slightly shiver and tremble in pure hatred against yourself and the vile Necrons.

As soon as the Voidship you were in reached the orbit of Telematha it had been meet with great salvos of enemy fire that under concentrated beams was able to render the mighty void shields of the spaceships completely useless. Onto some of the other Navy ships great quantities of Skin Flayers suddenly teleported and started to wreak havoc in unseen ways and manners as they completely crippled the morale and coordination of the troops and crew inside, besides that the Guardsmen and combat personnel that became able to reach an orbital transport and descend died as soon as they stepped a feet onto solid soil due to a strange orange mist that killed them in mere seconds but didn’t affected the own Necrons.

Unknowing this last details in an instant you sent two thousand loyal warriors to their deaths. Each one of those good men and women felt like a single grain of sand in your sore throat, you could stand killing some people by sending an unwise order but so many at once and in such a quick succession felt like a massive sandy rock lodged into your gut.

Wars are cruel and deadly, but that’s how they are supposed to be. What had killed all those men wasn’t war, but your own stupidity.

The Navy and all the reinforcements had come with all their force and now that they were so close it seemed that they would be all stopped before they could even descend and avenge the fallen Forge-world.
>>
>>45598117

Luckily for you the God-Emperor ‘s light seemed to have shinned in your direction. You were informed that liquid water turned that deadly mist into something completely harmless, the cartographers quickly added that there was a rock belt with a great proportion of ice based formations.

An idea immediately popped into your mind, pushing those ice composed rocks onto the planet below and creating a rain of solid ice, a great part of those rocks would melt on the atmospheric descent and the ones who didn’t would sooner or later become liquid as Telematha was a dry and hot planet.

You quickly reunited the Commander, Navigator and Magos of the ship you were in and created a communications link with the rest of the still surviving ships. With haste in your lips you explained them about pushing those rocks into the planet and found yourself with a mix of incredulity, accusations of heresy and a few ones that thought that it was a possibility. All of that conversation was happening with a sound only link for the rest of the guardsmen and navymen were trying to coordinate themselves and their meeting required to occupy the least bandwidth as possible yet suddenly someone with a power greater than theirs appeared, in front of everybody the image or holographic depiction of a heavily armored and high ranking Salamander Astartes appeared, he decided that the idea would be done and thus settled the dispute.

As everybody proceeds to leave the meeting and return to the crude situation they were in you were stopped by a General, it was Lisandrias, a greatly stemmed officer that you and this planet had the luck of having right now.

“I hope this plans of yours work but if you have the blessing of the Salamanders I think that you will be safe. Our minds are a better weapon than most of the gizmos that the mechanicus can craft. Good Lateral thinking Commissar Oihan.”

“Lateral thinking?” You said somewhat puzzled, not even noticing that in a somewhat rude manner you didn’t addressed him with the needed respect nor mentioned his title.

“Yes, the skill to create new plans from where there was nothing, to see the chance of victory even when the outcome is at its grimmest peak. According to the reports there are great deposits of water on the planet but they are all deep underwater; we could have used specialized troops and servitors to pump it out to the surface but with all those Xenos around it would have been a complete suicide, your plan is what might give us a chance of achieving victory. Well met, if there is anything at my hand that you want to ask do it now for we might not have the chance to speak again once the great battle begins.”

You still felt somewhat down for having sent all those men to suffer pointless deaths. If they at least died in combat they would have lost their lives in an honorable way but with your orders they simply died like dogs waiting to be neutered. Maybe you weren’t worth of guiding the Micerian Spitfires at all…

>”I want to be translated to a Team of Harakoni Warhawks. I think their combat doctrine and style suits me better.”
>”I want to combat next to you sire, that way the chance of speaking will never disappear.”
>”Thank you for your offer General but I am good right now. There is no change nor question that I want to make.”

Civilisation, at last.

Admittedly, calling a no name outpost town “civilisation” might be stretching it a little, but after your experiences in Odan's Harbour and Dumas you'd take anything. Howa joked once that you might as well be feral for all the time you spend in the wilderness, but that's a matter of necessity more than preference. You might not be a fan of the big city, true, but you like your occasional creature comfort. A soft bed, a warm meal, a mug of something just alcoholic enough to take the edge off. The sort of things that any man of your age learns to appreciate.

Outpost towns, a common feature in Tenngaru's wilder lands, all share several features. A guard post, capable of holding prisoners until they can be moved to the capital. An aviary, stocked with messenger pigeons trained to fly all over the land. Both an inn and a general store, offering beds and supplies to travellers. Everything, in other words, that you might need.

Islands, they've been called, in the ocean of field and forest that covers Tenngaru.

Morning finds you sitting in the drab room you rented out, carefully wording the report you'll send back to the Nameless Capital. You'll trust it to pigeon post again, for the speed if nothing else. Besides, you had a request to make in your report and sending the message on ahead of you would give Howa some time to get started. Research, put simply, into just what Nodens was – if there is an answer to be found, the archives at the Nameless Temple are the best place to start looking.

When you're coming back from the aviary you find Koa sitting in the inn with a thrown together meal. He looks well rested, a far cry from the slumped, yawning mess he'd been when you arrived at the outpost. When you tell him to finish eating and gather his things, he does so without complaint. Riding at a brisk pace, you could be back at the Nameless Temple by the afternoon.

“Riding again,” Koa mutters, his good humour souring a little as he fumbles himself into the saddle.

Riding again, you confirm, it's something he'll need to get used to if he plans on becoming a Wanderer. The name is kind of a hint.

“I know,” he sighs, and says nothing more as you both ride off down the forested path. It's good weather for riding, cool and without much of a breeze. Moving forwards, you spend the next hour or so in a companionable silence before a voice reaches you.

“Sirs!” a woman shouts, emerging from the trees and waving you over, “Oh sirs, are you from the Nameless Temple?”

“We are,” Koa announces before you can get a word in, “What's the problem?”

Wonderful, you grumble to yourself, now you're about to get dragged into-

“No problem, sirs!” the woman replies, “Our village has been blessed with child, and we need someone to say the words. Would you do it?”

An easy task, more routine than anything. Not your usual business, but it would be a good lesson for Koa.

I tried running this yesterday, but a power outage leading to an internet crash prevented me from doing so, turns out electrical companies don't always notify you beforehand. So sorry, lads, I'm going to try again.

The room was dark, the only light being that of the dying torchlights that rested along the walls. To call it a room was slightly inaccurate, rather it would better be described as a cave. Black stone walls entrapping the six figures, all of whom stood around a table made of the same material as the cave itself, looking more a part of the natural scenery than it did an imported piece of furniture. The darkness hid the figures from one another, their appearance hidden to the naked eye, although it was clear to see that their sizes varied greatly.

"The dark lord has arisen, brothers and sisters," One spoke, his voice gravelly and grave, as if rocks were scraping against one another in his throat, "our vigil has ended."

Another snorted, a large figure, before he eventually spoke with a booming voice, "Then our master has a task for us? Are we to lead his armies to conquer the Earth?" Mirth present on his words.

"Do not be so excited, dearest brother," A female voice added, adulterous tones enriched her speech, "War is not always the answer."

"You speak true," The first figure spoke once more, "He is arisen yet not powerful enough for an invasion as of yet. We are to infiltrate the mortal realm, and bide our time until it is time."

"A coward's strategy!" The booming figure spoke.

"You will hold your tongue, brother," A fourth figure spoke up, their voice was androgynous in nature, as was their figure, "We will serve as we are ordered, as was our oath."

"As was our oath," The other figures murmured in unison.

You are Marcus Hall, school golden boy. Captain of the school's soccer team, straight A student, and all around face of your high school. Of course, this has it's drawbacks, whilst you are friendly with most everyone at your school, you don't have much of a social life. A majority of your time is split between training and studying, with everything else falling to the wayside. You haven't been to a party since your sophomore year, although you're relatively sure you've been invited to one almost every week, it helps that you're on friendly terms with everyone, granted you haven't had a meaningful conversation with anyone for almost a year. Your life is routine, a routine dedicated to perfection.

It is 1am on a Sunday morning, and you cannot sleep. You keep going over and over that day's game in your head, you can't help but blame yourself for the loss. You'd missed the equalising goal, you could've done so much better, and losing that game wasn't just a let down to yourself but a let down to the entire team. It didn't help that on Monday you had a huge Spanish test, your worst subject, and one that was threatening to drop your GPA if you didn't do extremely well on the test. You sit there, staring at your ceiling, letting the stress flow through your head as you think of every single possible error that could happen. Your eyes linger form staring at your off light to looking at the anxiety medication sitting next to your bed, you wish you didn't need it, you really wish you didn't. Stress and anxiety was a weakness, no matter what your psychologist said, you couldn't afford it if you wanted to achieve everything you could. You had to clear your head.

What do you do?

>I am SO using stuff I learn from his channel in this quest, while it's still relevant.

You return to the village with the first signs of winter's snow swirling around you in flecks that do not yet settle on the still summer-warmed earth. Soqed was once again pleased by his sacrifice this year, perhaps even more so for the loss of the goat's life, along with the meat. If you do not miss your guess, there may be some connection between the perceived value of the sacrifice or offering and whatever it grants to the god to whom it was intended.

The loss of a single goat won't effect your herds too badly, even after the harvest-time butchering. If you lose too many however, you'll suffer some serious setbacks. Goats are valuable; far more so than any flint tool or basket of grain.

It is now Early Winter. The tribe is eagerly anticipating the annual festival and the exchanging of small gifts that has become customary. A much smaller group is expecting you to once again lead them to pray for the blessings of the Heavenly Gods. Elia and Galit's miraculous child seems to have spurred a sudden upsurge of faith among the tribe.

The antagonist is a forest/pagan demon. In the forest the Demon is virtually invulnerable. It was intended that the players try to lure the demon out of the woods.

The players: We just go in his forest and kill him. (Actually very untypical for the player)

I have made over NPCs very clear that this is suicide. They have not listened to the warnings.

Now I am unsure what to do. After the setting, it IS suicide. But I do not want a Total Party Kill

Kill your players.

Fluff it as them playing a warning tale from a crusty old fuck in a tavern.

You can maybe have a couple of them survive, but stupidity should never go unpunished.
>>
Utterly barrage them with horrors and force them to flee
>>
>>45582504

Have the Demon play with them, make it overconfident since they are fighting on his territory. Then narrow down the fact the the forest gives him his invulnerability and instead give him a loci or heart that if the players reach and destroy weakens the demon to their attacks.

This way the NPC's are still right, the players are still stupid for trying to fight the demon on it's own turf, but the challenge is not insurmountable.

We are a chapter founded to serve as a Standing force in a Sector/subsector that needed one or just had none. Founded in the 32nd millenium, making us quite an old chapter by now, we are founded from the Gene seed of the Iron Hands but it is not quite pure and has... well, we lack either the black carapace or progenoids(I imagine this is somewhat recent, but who knows), we are merciless much like our progenitor. Our figure of legend was/is a chief Librarian and the bane of orks(we can re-roll this if it is too boring), we are based on a hiveworld with a temperate climate which we have a distant relationship with.

we have a unique chapter organization and practice a Lightning strike combat doctrine

When you discard it, the madness ability triggers. You exile it to choose to pay alternative cost. If you don't it goes into graveyard... Like it says in the card.

Oh, actually it's me who can't read. Interesting how irony works. My bad.

You are Vanquish, the masked hero of the night who protects part of Arcadia, a city of the future.

LAST TIME:

We fought a mysterious man called Knightmare, made a friend in the bumbling hero Hurricane Vanguard, and got accepted to be interviewed by the Peacekeeper's Union.

Now, let's henshin a-go-go baby!

---

The sun breaks through your window, illuminating your messily kempt room. Your eyes flutter awake, the blue numbers on your alarm clock greeting you.

7:59.

One whole minute before the alarm was supposed to go off.

Huh, you must really be prepared for this interview--

>BZZZZZZTTTT! BZZZZ--

You slam down the snooze button. Right, alarm clock.

You get dressed, stuff some Minute Rice in the microwave, and turn on the television to check the local news. All seems relatively sound this lovely morning, June 22nd, 21XX.

Newscasters report that Paragon Supreme, leader and founder of the Peacekeeper's Union, will be heading abroad on a trans-continental trip to make the Union a global effort, starting in Europe. Pretty cool stuff, you think.

>What to do until our interview at 2?

>Change the channel, catch a good show.
>Practice our interview, don't want to mess it up.
>Dick around on the internet.
>Write-in.
>don't you dare write in masturbate or I swear to god

Masturbate to shota porn

>Practice our interview, don't want to mess it up.
Should also fix up our gloves.

fuck you bruv we aint no pedo

You move over to your duffel bag, retrieving the cut gloves. Just running your thumb over the gash brings back the memory--the sheer rush of your will made manifest striking against him and making an even match.

Most of the people you catch and apprehend aren't quite on your level. Even the so-called 'superpowered' ones don't have much to do against your will's strength.

That Knightmare guy? You haven't seen shit like him before. Normally, he...

He's the people Peacekeeper's Union fights.

Damn, you really might be cut out for this.

You grab some kevlar tucked away under the floorboards and shoddily sew it into the gashes. You were never one for fixing your own costume, but it'll have to do. A quick dab of paint across the replaced material, and it almost looks like half of a hack job and not a full one.

Sitting up against the wall, putting your helmet on to simulate the real thing, you begin.

"I...I'm Vanquish! I want to join Peacekeeper's so my reign of justice is not impeded while the wicked get away!"

"Well," you say, raising your voice into a supposed interviewer, "we have plenty of those. Why are YOU important?"

"My power is quite literally limitless! The only thing holding it back is my emotion, my drive, the sheer force of will that makes me keep moving forward! In time, I could surpass Para--"

No, that was too cocky.

You take the helmet off and toss it aside. Maybe it would be good to do things more...on the fly. Planning isn't in the nature of a hot-blooded woman like yourself.

>What now?
>Get some exercise and warm up.
>You've done enough. Veg out like the shit you are.
>Audience: Ask for Exposition about something...?
>Write-in.

Why does every single RPG rulebook seem so long winded and just difficult in terms of how it explains how the game is played. No matter how complicated or rules lite it is they spread everything out across a ton of filler text that can span hundreds of pages.
Like, what the fuck?

Is there an rpg that isn't shit at explaining how it works?

Because it is written by frustated fantasy novel writers who need a paycheck for their alcoholism.

There are two reasons.

The first is because RPG authors are notoriously arrogant. They bristle at criticism and will shut down forums and comment sections to hide from any issues with their product, real or perceived.

The second reason is because many RPG authors are from smaller distributors or self-publish and lack the funds to hire editors.

I'm a technical writer. People in my line of work generally work freelance or for larger companies. We are out of the price range of many small publishers and the larger ones don't see the need to entrust their product's success to someone from outside their little cliques.
