I have a fucking Deutschophile in my group.

They're so fucking annoying. I was hoping to avoid having one in my group, but there's so many of them these days that you just can't avoid them.

He's always talking about how Germany has the best culture in the world. The only weapon he ever uses is a zweihander, which he claims is the best weapon ever designed, and he refuses to call his class "fighter," instead referring to it as Landsknecht and expecting NPCs to react to him differently because he's got a huge feather in his hat.

He probably worships the Nazis and wants to have sex with dead Jews. He needs to stop trying to insert German shit in a campaign setting that has nothing to do with German culture, and he needs to take a look at himself and understand that it's fucking weird for an Irish guy to get all misty eyed over such a retarded country, that fucking Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte-eating prick.

Think of a tabletop RPG system. Then, think of a setting for it, whether the setting is the RPG's default setting, another published setting, or a homebrew creation.

Got it? Good.

The system and setting are now the basis for a "2010s anime (adapted from an LN) about kids getting dropped into an MMO/video game RPG world, with everyone inexplicably aware of stats and game mechanics"-style series. What is the anime like?

Fuck, my first thought was Orpheus.

Okay, so there's an MMO where you wander a ghostly hellscape and fight specters and lay ghosts to rest. Lots of kids are playing it.

The thing is that the technology actually allows the player to project, as Skimmers. Hence the rumors of people dying from 'overplaying' turns out to be the truth. Also, some people have gone berserk and become Jasons when they were possessed by Specters.

Ultimately, the game was distributed by a Malfean in order to harvest souls for the great war against Grandmother to come.

Combine Minecraft, unreal tournament, and Corruption of Champions with a ridiculously in-depth and user-created item crafting system (if you can define it with the game physics, you can make it) and exploitable magics.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you GURPS.
>>
This thread was right next to the Gurps general, so I thought of that and a western setting.

I guess the anime kiddos keep trying to bug the GM to let them take certain advantages and superhuman stuff? One keeps trying to make things cinematic and rules-lite while another goes gritty and follows all the optional rules. Meanwhile they make a bunch of fanny jokes about popular movies. Man now I just want to watch Trigun.

A thread dedicated to discussion and feedback of games and homebrews made by /tg/ regarding anything from minor elements to entire systems, as well as inviting people to playtest your games online. While the thread's main focus is mechanics, you're always welcome to share tidbits about your setting.

Try to keep discussion as civilized as possible, avoid non-constructive criticism, and try not to drop your entire PDF unless you're asking for specifics, it's near completion or you're asked to.

How do you feel about non-standard names for common mechanics? Pretentious, nice to have, mandatory? Does it make a difference if the mechanic is being used in a surprising way?

For an example of that last question, I'm working on something that's mechanically feats, but each feat contains both mechanical bonuses and plot hooks. I'm leaning towards calling them Steps and feat chains Paths, because of the weirdness.

(But I'm more interested in starting a discussion than actually talking about my system.)

RPGs are a mix of improv theater and boardgames. Usually with the theater being a frame tale so you can play some boardgames. There's tons of material to plunder among modern boardgames. And by all means, pick silly, tactile games. I recommend Catacombs (again), String Railway, Dixit (or Mysterium), and Bunny Bunny Moose Moose as wild enough starting points. Also Bandu and Tok Tok Woodman are Jengi-likes.

And I'll raise you one - improv theater where you have to react to your actions succeeding or failing at the roll of a dice is one thing. But there are a lot of improv comedy games out there. Can any be twisted into an RPG?

How many CCGs were actually good? Any games worth checking out even now? What dead games are still cheap to get into?

I'm just curious since I know so damn little about the vast majority of CCGs released over the past 20 years, and I'm in the mood to throw money away at ancient games I'd only play with a small group of friends.

So there's these 'minigames' that really manage to convey a game situation in a visceral way for the players. They are limited in application, but what they do they do better than any dice probability could.

Dread uses Jenga to represent the tension curve which kills characters and players need steady hands under pressure to make it.

Earlier Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes was suggested as a bomb defusing mechanism.

The Good Friends Of Jackson Elias in their recent props episode suggested bullet casings as damage markers and a toy gun with limited charges as ammo counter. Maybe that isn't a minigame, but it does the same thing: convey game reality for the players to touch.

What are your thoughts on this?

>>45953137
It's a cool idea but needs to be carefully balanced. For example, having a player solve a little puzzle to represent their character solve an in-universe one may not make sense if the player is pretty smart but their character is a dull, uneducated brute. Or having the player perform a minigame that requires a steady hand needs to reflect the dexterity of their character in some way, too. etc.
>>
>>45953342
That's the thing though. As long as it draws the player in it's still better than a realistic simulation.

Puzzles are a good point though. I'm usually not a fan, but if done right they can deliver exactly that immersion.

Don't make your players solve substitution cyphers. That's tedious. Unless you want the players to feel how tedious their character's job is for hours, don't.

You could give the players a ball to roll through a tilting maze to solve a dwarf puzzle that opens the ancient mountain home.

You can have the mad scientist's journal handout spell out the solution in the first letter of every paragraph.

But even a mere Vigenère code is too much to demand of players who don't happen to be total math geeks and enjoy such things.

Alright, so you've got Space Marines. They're the protagonists of the setting, so it's only fair that they have the best units, rules, and backstory. You'll love them. They're HFY with a bit of Dune.

After them you have the Imperial Guard, which are the bootlickers that support the Marines. They have tanks, so they're okay.

Moving outside of Humanity you have Chaos, which, true to its name, is mostly RNG units, and orks. Which are mostly grey.

The good aliens are the Eldar and the Tau. The Tau are known for being close combat samurai and ninjas, which is probably even cooler then the Mariners. While the Eldar are Space Elves, which why they have such big tits.

The evil aliens are the Tyranids and the Necrons. The Tyranids are mindless bugs, so there's no real strategy to them, while the Necrons are evil robots that enjoy eating their enemies souls to power their shard batteries. So you'll want to field as many of their units as possible.

That's all of the factions, I'm pretty sure.
>>
>Space Marines: Smaller amounts of stronger dudes
>Imperial Guard: Very large amounts of weak dudes and/or Tanks
>Grey Knights: Even smaller amounts of even stronger dudes, compared to SM
>Sisters of Battle: a weaker version of the Space Marines
>Tau: powerful at range, weak in melee
>Orks: lots of cheap dudes that fire many inaccurate shots
>Tyranids: many very weak units backed up with strong giant monsters
>Eldar: Generally excel in every area currently
>Necrons: Tough to kill, but slow
>Chaos Space Marines: a weaker version of Space Marines

Planescape General and Q&A

Thread starter question: How would you use Limbo in a campaign and make it distinct from the somewhat similar Deep Ethereal (and, in the 5e cosmology, the even more similar Elemental Chaos)?

Discuss Planescape and the Great Wheel here, whether the original AD&D 2e version, the 3.X version, the 4e version (yes, it exists in 4e, down to the baernaloths, the yugoloths, the Heart of Darkness, Maeldur et Kavurik, Tenebrous, Pelion, and the Last Word all being canon as of Dragon #417), the 5e version, or your own original blend.

I am exceedingly well-lanned on Planescape canon under a holistic blend of 2e, 3.X, and sometimes even 4e lore. If you have any questions at all about the setting's lore, feel free to ask, and I will give you direct quotes and citations from as many primary sources as I can, unlike afroakuma. I will note when something is open to GM interpretation, and explicitly note whenever I give merely my own personal interpretation.

I wouldn't use the Elemental Chaos, because I think that was a terrible decision and the old Planar Cosmology worked a lot better.

Hell, throwing the entire Great Wheel into the garbage can was one of the most annoying things about 4e for me.
>>
>>45953876

4e had preserved a surprising amount of planar lore as pointed out in the opening post, but I understand your concerns regarding the Elemental Chaos.

How would you make Limbo distinct from the Deep Ethereal, then?
>>
>>45953953
A lot more chaos and change, and a lot more in the way of finished results/complicated structures. You're more likely to find trees and chunks of land/structures/buildings/natural environments in Limbo, and it's a lot easier to create things there (though they end up falling back into chaos a lot more quickly). It should also be clear that the place is chaotic, so descriptions should make note of the fact that the fire doesn't quite behave like real fire and so on.
