Should characters with low INT always be roleplayed as being stupid, or is it okay for a character to say and do smart things but be awful at skills that mechanically require intelligence?
20 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I'd say it's fine to have some good ideas every now and then, but there's a limit where you are trying to negate a drawback to your character through roleplaying.

It's the same reason I get iffy when some guy has zero social skills but tries to roleplay himself as being more sociable and charismatic than his scores would suggest.
>>
Consider language to be a technical skill.
Consider that int also determines how your character reasons, including higher concepts.
If low int is something like 8, those two elements can be here, or only one can be here, or none at all. So conversation could be a functionnal or even pleasant, as long as you don't go philosophical, put him outside his knowledge zone, or dump too much info on him in a short peroid of time.
If it's 2 int, howevr, I don't see any of those elements working, so yeah, retard speech (and logic).
More than grammatical errors, insist on limited vocabulary and short sentences.
>>
>>45961733
So roleplay something no representative of their stats?

The low skill scores take care of themselves by mechanically representing low Int. If you're not going to roleplay stupid or dimwitted to show the more abstract side of the Int stat, why bother?

You are Kane Gerric, a Miralukan teen from the slums of Jerrist IV. Facing the prospect of starvation, you dragged your childhood friend on a foolish mission to rob the richest man on the planet. Narrowly escaping a horrible death, the pair of you have found yourselves stranded on the very highest landing pad of his palatial spire.

With your wits, a pair of stolen blasters and a power you can't understand, you must find a way to escape five hundred floors of the best security credits can buy, alive and intact. Oh, and it wouldn't hurt to 'liberate' a few trinkets along the way.

The last few rays of sun ebb from sight, fading below the lip of the landing platform. Heart pounding out of your chest, you tentatively approach the landing pad's access door. The hiss of the automatic door nearly causes you to jump out of your skin.

To your relief, there's nobody waiting for you behind it. Ahead lies the most fabulously opulent staircase you've ever seen. The floor is carpeted in some lush red fabric, so deep that your feet begin to sink as you tread downwards. The walls and ceiling are made from some pale white stone, threaded with golden veins that shimmer in the low light that emanates from crystals set into the walls at regular intervals. You reach out with your mind, trying to discern what lies ahead. A lobby of some kind, wide and round, with wide beds of lush foliage spread around the outside. Although your vision is hazy, there are three figures waiting at the far side of the lobby. Two are boxy, utilitarian, and armed with blaster rifles but the third shimmers like a silver statue. Droids, then. Beyond them, a pair of elevators are set into the wall - one golden filigreed, the other plain and unadorned. The silver figure seems to be berating the other two, fussily throwing its arms to and fro.

You turn to Choni. "There's three droids ahead. I think two of them are security, I don't know about the third. Should I blast them?" The Twi'lek looks grim. "Can't we sneak by? Or maybe we can talk them out of blasting us? I've worked with my dad's droids. They're pretty stupid."

You press your spare blaster into her hands. "Just in case, okay?"

Sometimes they wear pointy helmets.

hey so, in my campaign the players are going to enter a Dracula like castle area, they're gonna have to scale it and reach the top for the final encounter with the bbeg. but i want this itself to take at least 2 sessions to just reach him, that sort of nearing the end struggle.

I've designed some of the rooms but I've run out of ideas, could some of you suggest any rooms or ideas for the castle?

Also i don't have the ravenloft setting book, would that be helpful to get for this sort of thing?

Currently the rooms i have are
-Dungeon
-Foray
-Dining room
-Courtyard
-Kitchen
-corpse pile (where the corpses are chucked once they're dry)
-Library
-Ball Room
-Maze
-Garden
-Chapel
-Throne Room
-Vault
-Alchemy Lab

But i don't feel like thats enough for this monstrous castle that should take multiple sessions to get through.

Ideas?

Think back, what was the last thing I remember. I've stayed up late and worked on my masters, collecting statistics on yet a new concurrency technique. How long did I stay up again? Normally I'll crash long into the morning barely getting up by the time my alarm clock goes off. Today it seems I can't get my eyes up, normally I'd just stay in bed and tell myself 10 more minutes, but I'm pretty sure my eyes are up, I just can't see anything, well I can sense light so it's not like everything has gone dark. I can barely move my limbs, it feels like my movements are restricted, but it doesn't feel uncomfortable. Speaking of which, I feel sticky, not sticky like waking up sweaty during summer or going far too many days without showering, but really really sticky.

It doesn't make too much sense, maybe I'm still dreaming? I haven't had any lucid dreams since I was a kid, but this might be one.

I don't get the music either, or rather the base that is going off in random patterns, thinking of it, it's more as if there are multiple sources going off at different intervals. It feels distant but I've been hearing it for a while now, whatever it is, it feels like it's gradually getting closer.

There's a creak of a heavy door opening, someone's running on... stone floor?

"They'll be here any minute, are you done on your end?" Someone sounds exhausted... huh, wait a moment... that's not a language I recognize, yet I understand it perfectly

"The soul has settled. With the catalyst spent they should have little reason to risk further casualties, gold can settle this matter now. I will negotiate with Druzag, peasant knights are easy to deal with once they feel they have failed their sense of duty." He sounds pretty calm about things. I'm not sure what they are trying to settle, but going by the increased strength and proximity of the base I'm starting to suspect that I'm not listening to someone's poor choice of music.

"You may assist the supplicants shackle the mind, I'd prefer that you get it over with before it hatches. It's easier to drain memories when they are all docile."

Wait what! Shackle! Hatching? Am I inside a goddamn egg? It makes sense of why I'm constricted like this... But again, shackling? What the hell, are they talking about me, what are they going to do to me?

When it comes to 40k, that answer is 'It depends on the Planet'

Why are so many games bad at balancing not just the difficulty of an action but weighing success and failure in a balanced manner? Lemme put it like this:

Some GM's think because the way a game is structured attacking an opponent with an AC of 20 is as difficult as making a Stealth Check at a DC of 20. Except they often forget that the consequences of failure in these are often magnitudes different.

If I fail an attack roll then guess what? I miss an attack and I have to wait till next turn to attack again. It sucks but unless I literally cannot take another hit or the enemy has some bullshit save or lose power (but that's a completely different discussion) then it's a minor setback at worst.

But if I fail a stealth roll the GM has no reason to assume just going "Well I guess a guard saw you and sounded an alarm" is a perfectly legitimate consequence of failure, even if it does mean my character is basically fucked and any mission we might've been on is basically doomed to failure now.

Now clearly the reaction is to just go "Just rule if you fail a stealth roll you knock over a lamp or something" but see: no book spells it out to do Stealth like that or how to actually tackle this issue. No book provides a good indication of what's a fair result of failure compared to the DC you're attempting and the action you're performing.

Why do no games even attempt to balance the results of success against the consequences of failure or try to have the difficulty class cover that? The DC is just a number you're suppose to meet, the actual important things is what happens if you hit or miss it.

I agree with your sentiment, failing a stealth check should raise the "alarm level" by one point, giving someone sneaking around at least a chance to fix it up.

Also remember that in d20 systems rogue type are supposed to tricks like silence and invisibility, having ranks in stealth is just ranks in stealth that are unlimited use.
>>
>>45959101
>>45959370
Aren't stealth checks and similar checks always context sensitive?

If you try to stealth in combat you probably don't vanish completely, it is more about distraction and DM could still allow dodge bonuses or free movement around battlefield even if your smoke screen fails a bit.

Out of combat it depends on situation. Maybe the rogue notices that the guards are suspicious and doesn't try to sneak past them meaning that he loses time or an angle of approach. If trying to hide in a dark nook there most likely some bonus to roll and any failure would have to be a catastrophic blunder.
>>
>>45959101
Because if you have a balanced game people will complain that it's not crunchy enough.

How would you go about making an alien race with a different bio-chemistry (Such as using Silicon instead of Carbon) or environment (For example, high gravity).
36 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
>>45958453
Silicon-based life is one of those things that sounds plausible on the face of it (silicon has four valence electrons, just like carbon), but in practice probably wouldn't work. Silicon's a lot less reactive than carbon is, it doesn't form nearly as wide a range of compounds as carbon does. Now, what sort of weird biochemistry you could get is carbon bonding with things that it doesn't in terrestrial life. Arsenic, for example, has been proposed as a possible replacement for sulfur, and there's actually some speculation that early terrestrial life may have used arsenic-based compounds. There's also some interesting stuff with alternate solvents than water, ammonia is considered fairly plausible by exobiologists. And of course there's the (comparatively) simple way of making exotic biochemistry by just shuffling around what sort of CHON-based compounds do what. It would be simple enough to have a biosphere where genetic information was coded in peptide chains instead of DNA, for example, and there are a wide range of things you could make cell walls out of other than phospholipids.
>>
Well silicon dioxide is soild below 2000K so just replacing carbon with silicon would result in you breathing sand.
>>
>>45958606
That's only if you directly swap the atoms in an already carbon-based life form (which would have a lot of other problems, too). Presumably a creature that evolved in a silicon-based biosphere would have separate organs for taking in oxygen and expelling silicon dioxide. Probably drop it off in some membrane that it would periodically empty. So it wouldn't be breathing sand, just constantly shitting it.
