When I first had my sword, I cleaned the blade judiciously, but ignored the rust on the guard because I thought it was just natural blade aging/pitting. After two years, someone finally suggested I clean it, and by then the little holes were bery numerous. I've been told it makes the weapon look well-worn.

Yes? How is this even a question. It's a roleplaying game. If the players get engaged enough that they are entertained by simply acting as their characters and interacting with each other and having character developing moments, that's a good things.

I always enjoy the occasional inter-party chat during a campfire either before going to sleep or during your watch. Also, you can never go wrong hanging around in the town with your party once in a while to blow off steam.

Bethesda games. It feels like playing a game with a GM that reads straight from the adventure and uses one of three voices for every character and they all love you.

Baldur's Gate
Early Bethesda up to Morrowind, but Oblivion does feel more like a traditional fantasy setting.
Older JRPGs that was inspired by D&D. I was LITERALLY thinking about the old Final Fantasy, since 1 and 3 are pretty much D&D knockoffs, especially the former. I would recommend 2 but I'm not sure if you'd like it.
Also Wizardry.

Dark Souls. You'll feel like you're under the thumb of a cruel GM who refuses to hold your hand, while still giving you the freedom to build your character how you want.

Raptors use mainly ranged weapons as a reaction to the Tau and Tyranids- they frequently got shot down before they could close in melee and the Tyranids would often surround and rip apart their most stalwart warriors, again in melee.

Also, they don't generally use melee because they don't want to get the IG they work with jealous. Of their glorious, armored, forms tearing the enemy apart with chainswords and power weapons.

With a bit of exclusiveness, extensive character creation constraints, and a mod that hates *teleports behind you* tier stuff it can work. Otherwise it just becomes a shitshow of teenagers's special snowflakes trying to one-up everyone.

There's no challenge to overcome when you can do literally everything.

I've been thinking about something like this. The basic problem is that it means that these stats have to be very significant compared to the rest of each character's abilities, which is generally how characters shine and stand out rather than run around as bipedal stat blocks. Works pretty well for a video game, not so much when you're trying to keep multiple people interested.

If you figure out how to balance that, however, I'd suggest running growth rates as adjustable so that if players get bad growth rolls or surge too far forward, their rates adjust so that no one ever gets too far ahead or behind. Personally I'd have max level stats set beforehand and adjust rates based on that, but that's probably not what you're looking for.

Maybe give bonuses for each level a stat doesn't go up (except for 0 stats)? And definitely have caps on stats. The gm would probably have to roll it himself to prevent shenanigans.

Seriously though, I've tried making a system like this before and it was insurmountable to try to balance everything. I'm sure it's possible, but don't get too invested, you might come up empty-handed.
