How should ranges work in RPGs?

> GURPS method versus D&D method

In GURPS you get a flat penalty to hit based on range. Shooting at someone 10 yards away will always be at a -3, shooting at someone 100 yards away will always be at a -6, etc.. This is realistic, and the good kind in my opinion. However, it somewhat minimizes the effectiveness of, say, a pistol versus a rifle, or a longbow versus a crossbow. As opposed to D&D where different weapons have different range increments, or Savage Worlds where the three range brackets depend on teh weapon used.

> Units or Abstract?

Most "simulationist" and "gamist" games go with real measurements but some go with "Short" "Long" etc for ranges. FATE has "zones" to abstractify distance. How do you like to do it? I kind of like the "okay there's two guards about 50 yards out, what do you do?" as opposed to "eh theyre like, medium range" because the former evokes a 90s-style GURPS-ish / AD&D-ish roleplay feel in me. But both have their merits.

Which do you prefer?

I like range increments to a degree, as they do help differentiate ranges between weapons. When you're talking realism AND gameplay, having both an old smoothbore pistol and a modern rifle take ranged penalties at a similar flat rate is going to have you run into problems.

It does depend on exactly what you're trying to emulate and how much you're willing to abstract. First you've got the actual spread of the weapon in question for firearms, then you've got the ballistic arc of the weapon, then you've got to account for the accuracy of the actual shooter/thrower.

The shooter's accuracy is represented within their own statistics block via their character attributes or skills or whatever. The weapon's spread is very negligible for a lot of firearms at close range, so you could absract a weapon that fires a little off kilter by giving them slightly heavier penalties for shooting at longer range increments or just shorten then existing range increments. Then the ballistic range increments themself.

>>46180784
Does that gun have two magazines?
>>
>>46180784
GURPS method is counter acted by the weapons effective range and accuracy. A weapon has its own penalty increase ALONG with the shooter penalty increase. So a rifle with 100/1000 range will have -4 at 100 yards, but a pistol with 80/600 range will have -5 at 100 yards.

And the rifle gets a higher accuracy bonus for aiming which counter acts distance.

Ok, /tg/, so I've had an itch for a RPG for a while and just got myself into a 2nd ed Dark Sun campaign. DM asked for a fighter or a Ranger. I was thinking rolling the Ranger, though I don't remember enough about Rangers in 2nd to be sure of that.

I've played some 2nd, but never really done Dark Sun. Any general suggestions or things worth knowing?

Take a minor psychic power, most people have at least some psi potential in Dark Sun irrespective of class.

Never trust a cactus.

If you're a wizard just stay in the closet.

And try to remember that the Tyr region makes the Kalahari look verdant, so don't be that party that wanders out into the wastes with supplies and survival skills more suited for a weekend upstate camping trip.

Interesting. It has weird stuff with weapons too, right?

I remember the whole "Arcane magic destroys the world" bit kind of, but is there any other class or setting stuff that's weird?
>>
>>46180795
>weapons
Mostly wood, bone and stone, metal is hella valuable.

Arcane spellcasters have to be licensed by a sorcerer king, or else can face persecution, most of these are "defilers" , but "Preservers" who tap arcane power responsibly also exist, though they are secretive, and just as persecuted as defiler.

If you're gonna be relying on weapons, bring spares or invest in unarmed combat, your equipment, being primitive can break on fumbles.

Also, don't try and directly oppose any of the sorcerer kings, not straight away, because they are astronomically OP, ideally you want the patronage of one before you take the right to another.

Yes, they are more or less all evil, yes this is normal for this setting.

Also, don't get triggered by depictions of slavery, it's a core part of the setting and it's themes.

You're a Cave Hydra, big and mighty. However, you happen to be in a situation which is.. Less than comfortable to say the least.

Starting from the beginning, you've entered the human city of Nebroz, or rather, you were forced to wait outside its defensive walls in a huge building covered in once glowing marks. In it you've found a dwarf whose smell is that of spilt beast blood, and a Nature's Attendant called Elia, a being that's more in attune with nature than anything else. There were also empty armor shells that stared at you, as if they were undead. Later on, Redclaw, a wolf of questionable size (when compared to yours) joined your stay. Only to have you help him escape when a fat human appeared and, after talking something over with the dwarf, went away and for some reason, angered the canine.

Now, Elia is being treated like trash, being shoved into a wagon that's just outside the building, something you cannot stomach even looking at. The dwarf is behind you, unconscious and emitting foul smelling vapors from the broken vials on his body, and now, the relentless suits of armor stand right in front of you trying to stop and, presumably, contain you.

This is a very bad day and oh boy are you mad.

Why are wizards in written material like campaign books, adventures and fantasy novels prone to being perverts who use their magic for fetish stuff? If you get to the point where you're a published writer for a company like WotC or TSR (back in the day) wouldn't it be in your best interest to curtail your kinky sex stuff to appear more professional?

I've played D&D for over 10 years now and I've never had a player who wanted to use their wizard powers to turn into a girl.

I don't know what made me laugh more; the idea of an old school TSR writer reining in their kinkiness, or the idea they wanted to appear professional.

Sup /tg/. I'd like to ask your opinion on an issue I'm having with one of my players/friends. I'm running the Mummy's Mask adventure path and I, as the DM, have a policy that if your character is not present, they do not get XP. You can however, have someone run it for you if you don't want to miss out on any. Now the aforementioned player couldn't make it due to his work schedule so he didn't play, and didn't ask anyone to run it for him because he's afraid of his character dying apparently. Anyway, a few days later, I'm playing some games over steam with him and the subject of the session he missed comes up. I tell him he didn't get xp, and explain that as a GM I can't make exceptions. He gets all huffy says he's gonna quit and logs off without saying another word.

>mfw

Am I being unfair, /tg/? It seems he may not have known about that policy, but I know most of the group does. Also, how do you guys handle absent players and xp?

>Now the aforementioned player couldn't make it due to his work schedule
you should probably make an exception for anyone who gets fucked by work. in a perfect world we wouldn't have to work shitty jobs to pay rent and miss out on things we would rather be doing with our friends. if you're doing this to him + are unemployed you should just jump off a cliff.
>>
>>46174289
I always give my players a base value, with additional XP for exceptional roleplaying, or doing something of worth to the group.

But then again I don't usually run systems with tiered advancements, and when I do, everyone gets exactly the same amount of XP.

Yeah the thing is, most of the group works or is in school and the schedules don't always line up. This particular time, we had to chose whether he would miss it, or three others would. I'm between jobs atm, but I've missed plenty of thing because of work in the past, some of them rpgs, where I also didnt get xp. I just thought, hey if your character isnt there to help overcome the adversity, how can he learn from the fight? I dunno. Maybe in the future, I'll just give xp to everyone no matter what.

Is it ever worth it to invest in social skills in RPGs?

>GMs who care little for social interactions will have you rarely make social rolls

>GMs who care plenty about social interactions balk at the concept of making social rolls frequently and prefer that you freeform social interactions, except for maybe a single social roll once every other session

Depends on the system

For PF or some other garbage, of course not. With WoD, then it is worth giving a shot.
