“Alright, I am gonna stop you right there”, you erupt. “At this point everybody has betrayed everyone else at least once. The Mage cursed the King and made his son into a Traitor, the Traitor usurped the Crown, then made the Mage’s wife pregnant, then the King stabbed the Traitor in battle and imprisoned the Mage, finally the Mage resurrected the corpse of the Traitor and used it as a puppet. Now it’s a good time to tell us where you wanted to go with this story”.

The Knight takes a dramatic pause. “Does it matter?”
“Of course it matters!”, you explode in anger. “Those are 20 minutes of my life I will never, ever have back!”
“Now calm down, will you? Look. I will tell you the point of the story”

“That humans are evil and traitorous and the world is grim and other shit like that?”
“Of course not”.
This time it’s you who is taken aback. “Then what’s your point?”

“My point is: you don’t like my story. And you don’t like my story because I am narrating it”
“Yeah, so?”
“So I could have narrated a very nice story and you would have hated it anyway. Because it’s me telling it”

“Alright, and? I don’t have forever”
“I want to prove that the opposite is true as well. That is, certain people will first shoot the arrow and then draw the objective around it. If you’re looking for a land where the dead are not, you should look for a place that was designed to be that way, rather than one that happened to become that way”

It… it makes sense. It hurts to think of that, and the story charade was definitely avoidable. But at least you’ve got an hint out of it, and that should sort of make up for it.

You take a deep breath, then hang your head.
“I think I owe you an apology, Edge Knight. Thanks for your help”
“Shouldn’t the spelling be Hedge Knight?”
“Shut up, I know what I am saying” you turn to the Priest.” Priest. We need to think of places where stories are kept artificially long or purposefully on balance so that no real ending occurs. Options?”

The Priest scratches his chin.
“The major offenders in this field are shounen manga. Then harem comedies, as they tend not to have a resolution. You could consider some mecha series too, but at the end of the day I think it would be even more fruitful to investigate into children’s cartoon”
“I don’t understand, aren’t anime cartoons for little kids”

The Priest gives you a smug look. “Right, because Edge Knight right here is so family-friendly”
“Point taken, Priest. A good one too”, you say while nodding. “So children cartoons. Do they tend to run for a long period of time?”
“You could say that. They are without a doubt the longest-running series. Although I am not sure they’d crave death and release. The choice is yours”

In your setting, are the players the only adventurers of significant note? Are there a few other scattered travelers? Or are adventurers as common as any other citizen, to the point where there may even be a so-called "adventurer economy"?
13 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>46268467

Usually, in my setting I make sure that any adventurer worth his name (aka, that can be starting to get some fame and all), tend to be around level 5. They aren't common, but you can find them in big towns or in some special occasions even in small towns.
Of course, they pretty scattered, unless in the specific setting there is some adventurer guild of sort that helps with such matters.
It's up to the players to make themselves a name, either way. Bards help a lot in such matter.
>>
>>46268467
Not that common but common enough that there is some effort made to keep track of them. As a result, a lot of countries have a form of registration, often accepted in other allied nations or nations that are friendly.

They typically charge a small registration fee, a yearly fee that you're expected to pay and in return you get access to a place to sleep in certain cities, some discounts, access to stuff that otherwise would be considered contraband (explosives for example), legal representation if necessary and of course you can go to them for bounties etc.
>>
>>46268640
Smart. Do they have any legal protections?

I recently decided I want to run a 5e campaign for myself and a few friends, and I want to run it in a desert area. After trying to build the basics of the setting, I ran into a slight problem. I know little to nothing of desert cultures or how to apply them into my game.

So as a result of that, I ask you all to try and give me a hand with getting some good material to use, be it myths, cultures, names, or whatever anyone thinks might be helpful.

Just keep practicing your impressions. I find a fun way to do it is watching comedians do impressions and then try to do impressions of their impressions.

You are Tsukuda Ryouta, a Shinigami of the 12th Division with the unique role of an investigator of abnormal occurrences.

Together with an old acquaintance, Takenaka Hanae, you are hunting a pair of humans capable of summoning packs of Hollows at will. Their goal appears to be terrorism, as the attacks were predominantly aimed at places of public interest. Tomorrow, during the New Year's Festival, their biggest attack is suspected to take place. You need to stop them before that happens.

The blond haired girl's plan is to use one of you as bait in order to lure out the human whose target appeared to be specifically the Shinigami. Hanae is assuming that the human in question isn't aware that his plan to take out the deployed squad has left a survivor, and that he'll want to finish the job if he were to find out.

"Takenaka-san, you said you wanted to volunteer as the distraction, but perhaps we should think it over some more?"

Hanae nods. "I'm willing to volunteer the more dangerous position, and I'd do so without a single qualm, Tsukuda Ryouta-san. However, if you believe that such a choice is not the most optimal one strategically, I won't insist on a needless risk. I believe I'm capable of outmaneuvering a human gunman even if I was out in the open, so I'm confident in my chances of surviving a direct confrontation." She says that, and yet you're not sure if she remembered to take her weakened state into account. "My Shikai won't be of much use in that scenario, so I'll refrain from using it in order to conserve energy."

"I think I'm also capable of defending myself against the gunman." You reply. Minami Hikari's Shikai, Haname, should be able to deflect the bullets no matter their properties, as long as direct contact with the target is actually a requirement to active the abilities. Of course, you'll need to have it already released when the encounter starts, as it would take more time for you to do so at the spot than it would for the gunman to pull the trigger. But even without the shield, you think you might be agile enough to compete against a firearm.

There are several possible ways to set up this scenario, assuming your target takes the bait. This plan won't get anywhere unless you follow that assumption, so it's best not to dwell on it.

But first things first, who should act as the bait?

"And now!" declares Gilbert, with all the fervor and elation of a child on his birthday, after the cake and just as the gifts are about to be presented, "The moment I've been waiting for! With these two wrinkled, unwashed hands, I bring motion to the motionless!"

You and your advisors watch intently from your seats in the training yard. The steel folding chairs are quite a pain in the ass, but Gilbert assured you you'd want to be seated for his presentation. Vanessa sits beside you, legs crossed and hands neatly folded. Her manners in public have improved vastly over time, and she is now able to go up to twelve hours without so much as smiling at you if need be. At your other hand is Duncan, called from his many duties to bear witness to this new invention, and measure the potential it may hold in terms of defense.

Gilbert kneels down beside Caitlyn, both safely ducked behind a stone barrier to protect from potential shrapnel. He wipes his salivating mouth as he observes the first moments of the final stage of the automaton project. You all wait and watch as the wooden crate set before you begins to hum.

Suddenly the top shatters, sending splinters flying. Duncan appears behind Vanessa in a flash, just in time to deflect most of the shards from dirtying her clean suit. One of them dares make its way toward your head, but you catch it between your thumb and forefinger without much effort.

A hulking wooden marionette, sans the strings, emerges from the crate. It resembles a gargoyle in general shape, with a wide maw and long fangs, as well as a round body beset by two thin arms. It stands at attention, then raises a shortbow, leveling it before suddenly spinning to face you. It fires a single arrow at your chest.

High Elf
Fighter/Thief/Wizard

1/1/1
Nothing weird beyond his absurdly high Charisma and Intelligence
AD&D

He started out as a disenfranchised prince of an Elven king. He had grown resentful of his own culture and took to travelling, taking a liking to the short lived races of men and dwarfs. He took up "adventuring" because he wanted adoration and money, eventually became a powerful advisor to kings and the like all across the planes (He was LE but most of the time acted "Good" for practical reasons). He finally settled in Sigil where he set up an orphanage to "make heroes" he could send all across the multiverse

I still use him as an npc in many of my games, sometimes antagonist sometimes patron. often both at the same time, he's a tricky cunt.

I never play really high-power games so the best I can do is pretty lame..

>Naule, the Hunter of All Things
>Wood Elf fluffed as Fae
>Ranger 5/Rogue 10
>Started from level 15 (it was a mini-campaign)

Basically the character was a hunter-creature from the Faewild equivalent of the setting, kicked off into the mortal realm because the Court Fae had had enough of his bullshit and because they needed to avert some big disaster that the party was trying to prevent as well. He didn't get attacked once during the whole campaign except for the last fight, basically his stuff was to hide all the time, sneak attack, move, stealth again and repeat, using an Amulet of Nondetection and a Cape of the Mountebank to ensure he was never caught.

Was real fun, and I got to play a really weird character because he was from the Fae world and acted nothing like a mortal, which caused not only hilarious moments but also horrified everyone. Fae are not nice.

Henry
Human
Cleric
...8?
Don't know.
3.5

I obtained the power just by being a cleric. I actually only played him for two sessions. The first one and a random one I had time for. I shouldn't have joined a campaign with how busy I was but the group was okay with me missing 90% of it.

As for such I only have one story about him. We were fighting some summoned monster as a boss and I looked at my prep'd spells. "Huh, I have Banish. No idea if this'll work!" so I tried it and the GM rolled and told it was gone. Then all the other players got angry at me and I took back my turn so they could fight it. Then I hit it for half its health with a damage spell off the bat anyways.

You're a Cave Hydra, big and mighty. And you're proposed an interesting suggestion by a Steppe Wolf called Vulpes and his gang of bipeds and other of his kin.

You've decided to leave your group of adventures once they told you that they will lead you to the Beast Guild to get you an owner. This morning you decided to adventure on your own further, not returning or finding a new home. Eventually you stumbled upon a massive blob of bipeds and some other ferals marching. Following them from the intensely steep grassy hill, you were eventually found out and approached by the aforementioned Vulpes and four other wolves, all carrying bipeds on their backs.

"So, what will it be, Cave Hydra?" Says the pup that thought he could force his own will onto yours, nevertheless, his suggestion is quite interesting. He told you to join his army to fight against what he calls 'Erazmo States'.

Honestly getting involved in some human on human warfare sounds too morally grey for our Hydradin. We should go find a lich or demon to fuck up.
