How does magic work in your setting? I had an interesting idea

So, there are 8 elements, set up in opposites: fire/ice, lightning/water, dark/light/ and earth/air. Of which you're aligned to one or two elements. But here's the thing though, the reason you're better at casting X element is because you're aligned to 1 concept, of which X element is an aspect. So for example, your power is not that of earth, but of life's will to survive and evolve, which most easily manifests itself as earth (fire's not the hardest for you either). Of course, you don't know this when you start casting, you just know you can manipulate earth. Once you DO learn your true power, though, you become exponentially stronger since now you know how you should be casting and the kinds of things you should be able to do, like evolve nearly indestructible armor plating onto yourself.

Sometimes it's more abstract, like the above example, but other times it can be simpler, like energy manifesting itself as lightning or the flames of hell itself being the cause of your fire. The more directly related your true alignment is to the element you're trying to cast, the more powerful the basic element would be (the energy-aligned example-mage would have stronger lightning magic than the magic of the earth-aligned example-mage) but more abstract alignments have more potential to be abused, once realized. Magic in my setting is whatever the fuck it wants to be.
Most of the time it's linked to higher brain functions and your state of mind of when you gained your magical ability.
If you are unlucky, it's mapped to your lower brain functions or some random muscles. So a magical mutant could have the shitty lot of causing explosions whenever he flexes his biceps or expel most kinetic energy from his body when he flexes his kegel muscles, which causes instant hypothermia but is very useful while on fire.

Arcane spells are quasi-independent things that squirm and writhe when contained to the page in written form.

Some say they are living numinology that tweaks the world around them in their death rattles as the wizard purges the spells from their mind.

Some say the spells themselves are not powerful, but rather it is the belief of so many wizards in the power contained in the spells that gives them their strength to bend the world, others say the spells are truly alive, more so even than people are for indeed the spells are thoughts and dreams that give the universe shape itself, and thus warp that universe in a feedback loop through their repetition and casting by we mere dream players upon the Spells' stage.

They where left alone (mostly) but the Sautehk's made all the bigger choices for them. This might had bee nwhat lead to the formation of the spy/assassin hero.

Actually 20-50s earth makes some really good basis for high adventure stories involving explorers and archeologists. There are still dark corners of the earth and anything (from Lovecraft to Atlantis) could be lurking there. Also, no satellite mapping, internet or mobile phones to ruin the feel of high adventure. You know like Indiana Jones etc.

If anything it's pretty much ideal era of high adventure given that there's lots of technology to do things, but not too much to take adventure away.

Considering the 1700's world map, I think he was meaning earlier than the 1900's, yet the time period OP attempts to describe definitely does not apply to the 1700's.

Because melee was still a thing, mostly because guns sucked, magic would have rocked shit, and it had TONS of folklore and legends... What the fuck do you call pirates?

Look at all the white shit on that map, that's prime exploring territory! Rife with deadly and unpredictable terrain, as well as savage natives who's backwards ways defy logic! Toss in some actual magic shit and I'd play the hell out of that campaign.

“Dart!?” A new voice rings throughout the bar. Your collective group of heads swivel towards Bartom, the plump pie-maker, as he comes forth from the crowd to address your mystery woman with an air of recognition.

“Hey there Bartom,” she responds, giving him a little half-wave.

You take a second to peer at the faces in the bar. Your spectacle has drawn most of the patrons' attention and plenty of them are staring at Dart wide-eyed and surprised.

“Y-y-you're alive,” Bartom states, dumbfounded.

Dart stares at him, mockingly quizzical. “Was I supposed to be dead?”

“You've been gone for awhile. We assumed the worst.”

“No, you assumed I was dead,” Dart corrects, flashing him a pearly white smile.

I'm in dire need for pic of bodyhorror stuff for a upcoming part of my campaign where my players end up in a Victorian-era asylum that doubles as a undercover experiment pen for a bunch of doctors with not a single ounce of ethics between them.

After showering, dressing, and eating a light meal of eggs and toast, you attend a critical meeting called by Duncan, which he assures you is of the utmost importance. You recall that he seems to think just about everything is of utmost importance, but it's not as though you have much to do in the morning anyway.

As you and your numerous advisors sit down at your respective seats, Duncan begins setting up a powerpoint presentation. You tap your fingers impatiently on the conference table, Vanessa devotes her interest to a magazine, and Shen does squat thrusts in the corner up until Duncan turns down the lights and begins speaking.

"As you all know, the nations to our north and west are long lived and powerful. As was Theon, which we incorporated nearly a year ago. Until now, each of them had been sending spies, raiders, and privateers to prod us into action, but recently these acts have all but ceased. After a deep investigation, I have discovered something alarming. Relations between the two have decayed, and now they turn their attentions to each other, in anticipation of war. My sources tell me any errant breeze will ignite passions, and with that I must suggest that we make preparations to take action as well. Joining one side will not only earn us a powerful ally, but it will afford us a chance to expand and secure an entire border. We should take advantage of this chance, and in my opinion, join the Kingdom of Solaris to the west. They are home to a religion that would be threatening if it were to spread to our people, especially after the Theonites had their faith shaken by our invasion."

Duncan opens the floor, and your advisors begin murmuring.

First guy I played was clearly new to prerelease, since he didn't know deck minimum was 40 while he was building his deck against him. Funnily enough when we told him the average for lands in a 40 card deck was roughly 17, he said that sounds like a lot for a small deck and thought he'd get mana flooded. He ended up getting mana fucked in both our games, won it easy 2-0. There was so much salt I told him I asked if he wanted a friendly match afterwards. He ended up hitting his lands this time. I still won.

Do you consider it acceptable to give creatures slightly different appearances from how they're described in the books, and how the players expect them to look, such as giving driders extra eyes like pic related, or do you consider in inappropriate?

Sorcerers now set up before spellcasting to gain a bonus to initiative.
Most dragon-touched creatures spend a turn in setup before they truly join combat. Walking piles of HP spend multiple turns setting up, then sweep adventuring parties.

Because that non-hitting move multiplicatively increases your damage output, speed, initiative rating, and dexterity.

The more you spam it, the geometrically higher your damage is.
