"Are you sure this is safe?"

"Not in the slightest." Veles says cheerfully, subjecting you to another barrage of examinations as he attempted to scry what is causing your to glimpse other peoples memories. So far, nothing has bore fruit, but you have learned a few 'interesting' things about your draconic heritage. Apparently a dragon can create a mental link with its spawn, reaching out and commanding them nonverbally. This claim was further corroborated by Liama, who mentioned something about an uncle who delves into it years before she was born. The fact that the link was created through a blood pact was of interest to Veles, but your conundrum seemed to be his focus at the moment.

You were surprised when he first ran you through a physical examination. Closely looking at your fangs, claws, spines, and even bone structure, the old snake inspected both you and Liama, who seemed more interested in how Veles worked than the problem you faced. When questioned, he replied that he was just making sure you really were a lamia.

The magical testing was where you got nervous. Inscribing massive rune circles, Veles had both of your step inside one at at a time as he channeled energy into the runes. Feeling pinpricks along your body you suffered through the mystical examination as well as you could, as Veles scribbled away into another one of his journals. Running Liama through the same rune only seemed to confuse him more, and increase the frantic scribbling.

"So what's the prognosis, doc." You say in a feeble attempt at jest as the faint tingle fades.

"On all levels including physical, you appear to be a lamia. Magically, mentally, the rough shape is there. Inside that? Well Sasha, both your and Liama are different from any other of our kin I have run across."

"And how many have you run across?" Liama asks

"Outside of my own brood, ages ago? Not many." He admits. "You two are different from them. I know not if this is bloodline, or if this is how our kind has changed over the years. In other words, I have no idea. I tried what I could and"

Meeting with a Johnson is always an interesting experience. No two are alike, except, perhaps, in how much they try to be mysterious. You personally have only interacted with a handful of Johnsons during your early adult years. Each time you let others carry the conversation, acting mostly as extra muscle and as lookout. This time around, however, you might be in the hot seat. Which, given you plan to turn on everyone involved at some point, would be rather ironic.

Mariet isn’t able to squeeze any meaningful details or hints out of the Johnson before the pre-arranged meeting time. You’ll be going into said meeting blind, which is both good and bad.
Regardless, you find yourself arriving at Buckly’s Cafe shortly before 2100. Seeing the cafe in person really reinforces the “hole-in-the-wall vibe” it has going on. It’s situated squarely in the middle of a Low District alleyway, with tinted windows and an old, wooden sign over the door. Inside it’s about what you expected: low lighting, booths crammed against one another, and otherwise devoid of occupants. Well, except for the small group in a corner booth.

Thanks for sticking with me through this reboot. I’m sure there will be some bumps/retcons, so just bear with me! Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification, especially about things that were covered in previous threads. I’ll try and link to specific post numbers where applicable. Paranoia chat is also encouraged as it amuses me.

If we’ll need to roll, it will be 2d6 versus a number (typically 8). In an attempt to allow the most people to participate in the rolls I let four people roll a single d6. The lowest two are then dropped and the remaining die added together with bonuses/modifiers (if applicable).

In the highly likely event that the Dice Gods are assholes you have the option of making a single roll result a 9. Most of the time this means an automatic success but it will come with a caveat of sorts in the narrative. It also can only be used every other session.

The three seated individuals seem like your average Joes. Two men and one woman. Only one has on anything resembling typical Lancer style - an overcoat worn by the woman. All three are constantly checking their surroundings. When they notice you they stop and watch as you approach.

“How is the soup here?” you ask, using the pre-agreed upon challenge/response.

“You’d be better having rainwater,” replies the woman.

She shifts over in the booth to make room for you. You take a seat and assess your fellows. The gentleman across from you is sporting mid-length, messy brown hair and smart glasses. If you had to guess, he’s probably the techie. The other guy is bald and built like an ox. It doesn’t take much to figure out he’s muscle. That just leaves the gal to your right. Now that you’re closer you can tell her mohawk is colored a faded pink. It’s hard to say what her role is based on appearances alone. But if the overcoat is any indication she’s probably concealing more than one gun on her person.

A quick glance at your watch tells you that you have five or so minutes before the Johnson is supposed to arrive. The three seem content to wait in silence, unless you choose to make small-talk, of course.

I want to play a casual and cheap TCG with my friends by doing something like this

>buy cheap theme/preconstructed deck
>buy one booster pack each week or two when we get together for games
>as a group, adjust decks and trade stuff

So my question is, what game would give the best experience using this set-up? I figured MtG would be fun because with only 5 colors, I feel like people wouldn't be too limited to what they can put in their deck from their booster.

I also thought the Pokemon TCG would be pretty easy to teach (I'm working with casuals, part of the reason I need to keep cost down), but am worried with evolutions and megas, people could get good cards in their packs and never get the commons needed to play them, although trading could fix this.

I know nothing about YuGiOh, but am willing to give it a try if my friends are up to it.

Any ideas or things you have tried in your groups? I'd really like to hear thoughts and opinions on a set up like this for playing card games.

Both Android: Netrunner (https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/android-netrunner-the-card-game/) and Game of Thrones (https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/a-game-of-thrones-the-card-game-second-edition/) are quite decent card games that don't require a large invesment. They get monthly expasion packs that come with playsets of 10-15 new cards for all factions, and major thematic expansion packs that focus on only one or two factions, that also come with full playsets or cards.

Assuming you and your friends are willing to play each different factions, you can save some money by sharing/trading the cards that aren't useful to you. Even then, compared to games such as Magic and Pokemon, these games are much more affordable.

The only drawback is that they're simply not as popular, and it's harder for you to find random people playing them on local stores, especially compared to something like Magic.
>>

Using MtG and Pokemon as guidelines, how hard would the games be to teach? Could be worth a look.

Perturabo, maybe. A massive fucking Legion(close to 200,000 marines), ridiculous firepower and a brilliant strategic mind. Not to mention that He was one of the most physically powerful Primarchs.

Without the Iron Warriors to do the hard work of preparing for and operating a protracted siege, the Battle of Terra might have been a much different affair.

This.

Fulgrim might also be a contender. If he hadn't turned Ferrus wouldn't have been baited onto Isstvan V, meaning the Dropsite Massacre would hace gone down differently.

On the other hand, which traitor was the least influential? I'm thinking Curze, maybe Mortarion.

Silence.

The death of Rust Kaiser is an abrupt thing, an impossible truth made manifest. Between one heartbeat and the next - Between the charging of the Singularity Cannon, the last wisps drawn into the yawning abyss - the world begins to move again.

Light returns, first. Not the sickly light of Alura's inferno, or CHERNOBOG'S furious discharge; but true light, a harsh grey illumination like the exhalation of a metal god. It issues from the Memory Towers, all sharp-angled black iron and barbs, now - Crawling with power, jagged bolts of fitful lightning flickering across pitted surfaces.

The *snap* and crackle of flames gutters out to nothing, choking smoke swirling in the air from the Thief's charred form. The rush of air from the Singularity Cannon's implosion has ripped the cloak of flames from his back; He lies sprawled, the fabric of his ragged coat melted into him - his armor is black upon him, and his bones are burned with heat. The gnawing flames have turned his legs to ash, stripped the writhing muscle from his borrowed arm - His skeletal fingers rattling, as they grip the Fatal Abyss's blackened hilt.

The red pinpoints in his helm are flames, as - methodically, static hissing from his speaker-mask - the Thief reaches into his charred coat with a shaking hand, withdrawing injector vials. The adamant needles crowning the clear cylinders glitter dully, in the failing light - Within the heavy glass, raw Lachryma rills, churning in constant motion...

There is a gagging, choking roar. ANIMA reels back, hellish half-real black shape swirling, re-forming, writhing. Rotten gore spurts, as it rakes at itself with great claws - that vast maw swinging back and forth in frenetic motion as the Cryptid gouges at its own flesh. The vast beast convulses, with frantic inner motion - it is choking, gagging. Tumors bulge beneath the surface of the horror's leathery carapace, sickly wet sounds spewing forth-

The virus. It swallowed Distortion Haze's virus.

The creature's jaws hinge out, wide - A tooth-fringed opening like a chapel cave. Not swinging open to bite - They're swinging open because of the grotesque growth of muscle, of teeth, those jagged needle-fangs spearing into the Cryptid's palate. It *howls*, hard enough to made the air judder, the vast tonnage of its bulk grinding and scraping off the tiled floor. Noxious white froth spews forth, a great torrent of rank effluvium - Slitted eyes rolling in frantic agony, head smashing down hard enough to crack the ground underfoot, mere inches from Haze-

"Choke on it," Haze snarls, his free hand clutching the jagged stump of his severed arm. ANIMA reels, roaring and squealing and shrieking, tortured nerves sending contradictory messages through the Cryptid's unnatural form. It tries rising, but every inch of the vast predator's corded flesh is in open rebellion, muscles spasming and limbs twitching, thick bloody sludge vomiting forth from every orifice as it jerks and twitches and wails-

You are Irue. The next few hours would determine whether 'Valen' remained part of your name or not, which was a fact that concerned you... Surprisingly less than you had expected it to. The past few months had seen you gaining a variety of new experiences ranging from minor endeavours into kitchenmancy to taking enthusiastic walks through the woods. You had stepped into the nearby town of Carona and discovered you hated it, then made new friends - Most of whom you also discovered you hated.

You had been a noble, the blood heir to an entire family of nobility, one whose prestige stretched across nations. You had thought this meant the world was equally yours to grasp as you pleased, an oyster waiting for you to seize.

You had been wrong.

The world was hardly what you had expected it to be, leaving you to stumble and stagger through what felt like an endless field of mines as you held tenaciously to your pride and confidence. That this inherited authority in your name was more of a burden than the keys to success, and that no amount of words and good intentions could make up for a lack of action or pacify people who'd been forced to lose things in their life. 'Valen' was a weight on your shoulders, one that had proven to be consistently useless.

Stripped of your rose-tinted ideas about what a noble's life was going to entail, you had very quickly come to realize that what mattered wasn't your family, but who you were. Loyalty wasn't something pledged to a name, but to the person who held it. Trust was something that had to be earned, not something to be expected obligatorily.

You are Irue. You promised to help a ragged band of brigands to find a better life. You carried a demihuman across town on your back and ignored the stares and hushed whispers, making an enemy of a town to defend her. You helped an emaciated slave stand on their own. You negotiated the aid of the Shrine and you led the operation to get one of your Testament back while uncovering a plot of treason.

Valen had nothing to do with any of that, it was something you had done on your own. By the end of it, you had become so wrapped up in your own efforts to resolve the problems around you and get your Testament back that you had nearly forgotten what lead you to all of this in the first place.

...It seems silly to think that this all started as an attempt to escape a political marriage.

Regardless, you still have a little time before the judgement starts today. All of the judges had evidently arrived, so now it was just a matter of preparations.

Space marine augmentations seem more extensive, and definitely seem to serve to make better warriors. Arguably, their technology is better.

In comparison, though, and depending on the specific chapter, their training and doctrine is very typically shit. Spartans are soldiers, not warriors, and they fight like operators, not trophy hunters. They don't pray to their gun, don't mind being disohonorable, don't mind avoiding engagements, and are not above using xenos equipment, and don't limit themselves to the Codex Astartes.

In a direct battle, most things being even, Space Marines would almost certainly be victorious. Spartans, however, would almost certainly avoid direct battle. Compared to Space Marines, Spartans would excel at guerilla-style warfare and strive to achieve less direct victories. Psykers would make a big difference. It'd be a lot like fighting the Tau empire. Imperium only wins the war by being waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay bigger than all other opposition. Remove that advantage and the Imperium struggles against most fictitious factions simply because everything they do is soooooo incredibly ignorant and wasteful.

If a blank-slate galaxy were created, and both a UNSC-style human faction and an Imperium-Style human faction were placed at opposite ends, and given the same total amount of resources/resistances and, say, 100 years to get entrenched, the UNSC would probably win because their methodology would make much more efficient use of those equal resources and be better about negotiating with xenos races. Imperium would basically have to rely on the advantage psykers and warp-travel bring.

What's up fa/tg/uys.
I've been using 4chan for about 10 years now, but only /tg/ for roughly 6 months.
I do have experience as a DM though.
I've been lurking quite a few Quest threads, and always find them comfy as fuck, so I reckonned I'd do my own.
Constructive criticism is very welcome. I did ask the guys in the quest general, so combined with what I like from previous quest threads, I do have some vague idea of what I'm doing.
I took this run for a quick spin on /b/ just to get a feeling for it, but they are only really interested in dicks and rate threads.
Went for a pretty 101 trope as a starter, but it'll probably turn out original enough in a bit.
Pretyped the first few bits, so I'm interested to see if you pick any of them. Other than that; standard 5 minutes vote, and then my designated typing window.
Last it's pretty late here, so if I don't do more than 1 or 2 threads, I've set up a twitter specifically for this (@tgQMbio) on advice from the quest general. I plan to run every other day throughout the week.
Enjoy

You wake up with a blinding headache. Something isn't right here. Your perspective seems wrong, and your body is aching tremendously.
Why is the world shaking?
As you come more to your wits, you realize you're hanging upside down. At least your hands are free.
What happened, why are you here? Where are you, for that matter?
As you look around, you can see you seem to be in some sort of crude basement, hanging from a wooden beam.
There's a fair amount of blood on the dirt floor beneath you, and to your right you see what could be a workbench with tools on it.
To your left there's a staircase. A closet of sorts seems to be beneath, but the poor lighting and your incredible headache is making it hard to focus.
The basement is lit by a torch on the wall by the staircase, and two candles on the workbench.

I ignored her taunt and got into position to fight her. She drew her blade as well and we set to fighting. I had already faced and beaten Faina once before at the Monasheskiy Library so I thought I knew what to expect from her in terms of a challenge, but I'm not sure whether it was the prior experience working in my favor, the time in prison doing her no favors, or if I was just better than before, but fighting her this time was easy. The greatest challenge I had was intercepting her when she tried to run off.

"You know," I said while blocking a wild attack of hers, "you never told me why you managed to survive so long in the Golden Saber."

"Do you ever shut up?"

"Sure, when I'm concentrating."

The only answer to that was a wordless scream of frustration so I continued, "I doubt that you're someone's wife. I've seen the way they treat their lovers and you don't have enough scars or bruises."

I had to duck a blow at my head before continuing to theorize, "Hmm. I remember you asking Boniface about that story with his father… so someone's daughter?"

Faina's attacks suggested that she was getting frustrated and gave me confidence that I was on the right track.

"So someone's daughter, someone powerful or else they wouldn't be able to protect you. Could it be that you're General Zinoviy's daughter?"

I could tell from the look on her face that I hit the mark . She sneered, "Well done Knight, you figured it out."

"Right, now if you surrender we can end this and -"

The sudden shadow blocking out all the moonlight was my only warning, I turned and only barely managed throw myself aside in time to avoid the talons of a massive bird. As I got back up I could see more of the massive beasts flying around. Lieutenant Faina climbed on to the back of the one that nearly disemboweled me and took off. In the sky I heard a voice call out to me, "Ah Sir Knight! It's been a while."

I threw myself to the side again to dodge the claws of another bird and saw on its back the Golden Saber Commander Kuzma. I barely had time to get to my feet before I had to dodge another bird.

"Martina," I telepathically singled, "There's another group of birds up here. Some of them have Golden Saber riders. I can't deal with them alone, I'm falling back into the woods for cover. Come when you can."

"I'm finishing off the last of these birds now. They have no riders, it must have been a diversion. I'm on my way back now. Be careful."

I had to dodge and run all the way to the treeline, but I made it there intact.
