Suddenly, the corpse jerks to life, limbs seizing and contorting in a macabre parody of life. Guttural moans and wheezing breaths eventually give way to a rasping laughter, voiced by a ruined throat, choked by blood and offal. It makes no effort to stand, content to smile and laugh in a pool of its own blood.

In any other situation, you would have driven your blades right into the undead’s skull. Complete and utter destruction of the head and cranium was a crude, but widely accepted method of killing an undead. And even without a given order, you would then begin the long process of hunting the necromancer stupid enough to bring his dark magic to the capital.

But you are dreaming. You know this for a fact without any hesitation, pause or reservation.
Because when you left this part of your life behind you, you made absolutely sure that your mentor was dead.

The corpse eventually stops laughing, giving you time to get in a word edgewise. “What do you want.”

It is not a question. It is a blunt statement, just barely an inch away from a snarl. The fingers of your hand clench the empty air, as if you could remotely strangle the phantom that lies before you. Not that it would do anything in the slightest.

The undead notices, and the smile to grace his face is anything but pleasant.“You aren’t going to greet your own father?” He asks in a derisive tone.

He laughs even as a fresh cascade of blood comes spurting out of his mouth. His finger waves at you in an admonishing gesture. “I thought I raised you better than that, boy. Surely you don’t mean to have devolved to a fishmonger’s brat in the years I’ve been gone?”

I shake my head, as invasive and crawling and down right unpleasant thoughts seep into my mind, the kind of thoughts that would get me whipped red back home

I smirk, and flap my wings a bit as I start to walk through the near pitch black room in the rafters and....wait, I can smell food...smells like sausages, pancakes, and fish again. Always with the fish...Still, smells much better than anything I used to cook up back home.

Closing my eyes, I stand still and try to figure out how close all that food is to being done...the fish still smells somewhat raw but...I'm pretty sure that's a rich thing right? Eating raw fish just sort of seems high class for some reason.

I sigh, Can't tell if it's about to be done, but at least I know it's morning. A smile creeps across my lips as Iris snores loudly, flapping her wings as she rolls over in her bed, making the chains clink and rattle.

There's been several major mechanical changes. Spellcasting works completely differently, as does the effects of Paradox. I don't know if a full suite of chargen rules has been leaked yet but go look up Dave's blog posts and you'll see the revealed material so far.

My necromancer has been constantly leaving old, outleveled minions behind. There's a bloody skeleton hydra in some dwarf's tomb, a gaggle of fast zombie orcs just sitting around in a swamp, etc.
I reckon a lot of people have died to those boys.
Even when I don't need them anymore, they're doing work... Brings a tear to my eye.

Try the newest edition (2.0) with someone. It's much better.

Of the top of my head, I can think of Infinity, Beyond the Gates of Antares, Warpath and Deadzone, X-wing and Star Trek Attack Wing, Dark Age, and the Firestorm games.

No idea about Gates, since they haven't posted the rules for free like so many other companies, but I've heard its close to 40k.

X-wing and Star Trek Attack Wing are dog-fighting games in space. X-wing is very popular right not.

Dark Age is pretty good for a small skirmish game. Combat is brutal, most things die quickly once its targeted by the enemy. The art style will turn some people off, though, and the old models are pretty clunky, especially compared to the newer ones.

Don't know much about the Firestorm games, but the rules are up for free to try out.

Deadzone is releasing a new edition like, next week. Much better than the older edition. Warpath is two games in beta: Firefight, which is 40k using Mantic's style of rules, and Warpath, which is like Epic. The rules are good, but there's some big problems in each set, and the Firefight author has been silent for over a month now. But the Warpath author is active on the forums.

40k's setting came from Combat 3000 and Laserburn, which itself inspired Laser Squad which lead to X-COM. Praised be. Its mechanics came from Warhammer, which was mostly pulled out of the blue to sell miniatures. Laserburn's neat, but clunky as all hell. Play Imperial Commander if you're that interested in proto-40k.

It was mostly based off the need to have a dynamic stat system where HP equated to attrition causing fights to either drag on desperately or cause severe upsets. Essentially by its design it would punish complacency and keep people on their toes even if they have a high wall of stats.
