Oh wow look at that we just had the entire thread in one post. Guess we can just fucking let it die now.

Seriously, stat me threads are some of the worst on /tg/, bar none. I wish the fucking jannies would see your off topic shitposting for what it is.

I want to get into PFS or AL play. I've played both systems and accept both for what they are, so I'm just curious about the organized play. I read AL has had some growing pains, and I kinda prefer PF, but I'm open to either.

What do you prefer?

AL has some issues.
PFS is nothing but issues.

5e also handles bad GMs and players better than PF does.

Would very strongly recommend AL unless you really fucking love playing PF with shitlords.
>>
Haven't done AL yet, but PFS is frankly a shitshow. Either you play the standard version where practically every fucking splat released has something legal for play (good luck auditing those character sheets if you're GMing), or you play the "No Fun Allowed" core-only version. In either case, the scenarios are very much focused on the muderhoboing with little way to play strictly diplomatic characters, and the seasons have gone through so many changes that the timeline of events is a clusterfuck. Buying any magic items is draconian, and any cool character options (like races) are either outright banned or require you to attend a convention for a CHANCE of getting a boon that makes ONE character of that type legal for play. Not to mention all the old-guard veterans are some of the most obnoxious players, evident from the Paulo forums.
>>
>>54823257
PFS can be fun if you're playing with fun people. There's three tables playing Saturday mornings locally, and I'll only sign up for tables with reasonable human beings and relatively low key autists. It's a fun enough time. If the only seats are with the mouth breathers , the anime portrait club, or the retards I'll find something else to do with my time.

I enjoyed it. The flexibility in character creation was nice, since I'm used to more rigid or class-based systems as opposed to being able to pick features to create the character as I'd like. Concerning combat, I had issues that every combat seemed to be either completely unwinnable or a steamroll. A lot of enemies reduced flat damage from attacks you made, so there were times when less combat oriented or more defensive characters could contribute very little, but then one combat character specialising in high offense might smite down an immensely strong enemy with little effort. If you had a defensive enemy and defensive players combats very well might have lasted indefinitely.

The world was super interesting, although we didn't get a huge chance to see it. I'd like to revisit it sometime, maybe playing a more scholarly, less combat oriented type. I rolled with a defensive cleric of sorts, with a mix of holy and martial skills, which was impressively resilient but unfortunately could do little but soak damage and judge barbarians for not worshipping the right god.

I am making a BBEG half-elf bard lock for my 5e game that is 18 Lore Bard/ 2 Warlock. His master plan is to compose his magnum opus with the help of his patron, sacrificing souls of talented musicians to use in his Infernal Orchestra.

I plan to have him manipulating things from the shadows, i.e. the Death Knight the players believe is the BBEG is just another cohort of this musician, etc. He put the current king into power, so they turn a blind eye to all the kidnappings.

That's all I have for now. This is the first BBEG I've created that isn't a rip off from a module so any advice is appreciated.

Also, I would love to read some stories of some of your games and cool BBEGs in them.

Let's design a fantasy race that lives on a floating ocean island?

How does the island does not sink? What kind of animals plant survive on it? Does the race have agricolture or it is just fishing?

What is the name of the island.

If you had your own floating island IRL would you declare it independent nation anon?

The race is actually the descendants of children formed from merpeople and humans, before those relationships were banned under the ruling of degeneracy. Honoring their ancestors, they sale the seas on their island, believing themselves to be the rightful rulers of land and sea.

an accumulation of organic 'stuff' that came to the centre of an ocean gyre and kinda matted them with birds using it as a perch it got covered in guano then plants from the seeds the vines and roots holding it together. Now it just circles the innermost part of the gyre and sometime folk end up there leading to differernt village of folk from one race/religion/culture and mixed villages where they trade/party/scheme/murder each other. wooden weapons for th most part little armour except turtle shell/boiled leather/padded/wood(?). the plac e would have to ne large enough to sustain a few thousnd folk with fresh water coming from pools of rainwater & using glass/sunlight to boil water then collecting salt & the steam turning back to water. food would be mainly fish but also fungi farms/insect senpaitachi (crickets good, silk worms doble good). language would be archai/debased versions of home languages plus 1 or more pidgins/creoles. intervillage contest and councils would be handy for plot maybe a police force so you can have pc's be investigators.

> Magic is divided into three vague subgroups: fire, wind, and water. In ancient times, there were more types of magic, but when the cataclysm ruined the world, the arcane libraries of yore were destroyed and their knowledge was forever lost, leaving only the simplest rudiments of elementalism.

> Magic is similar to science in the sense that in theory, anyone can learn it, but in practice, only a few talented individuals can hope to master it, and most must suffice with simply being skilled in their field. Mages tend to specialize in a single element, and often gather in isolated towers and fortified vaults of their fellows. Mages tend to have a rivalry with other types of mage, and often look down on mundane commoners.

>>
Because the element of Earth was lost, magic is completely ineffective against metal. Thus, the most efficient way to deal with a mage is

1: Wear metal armor
2: Shove him in a locker
>>
If earth magic disappeared when a library was destroyed I would assume it sucked ass since apparently nobody was using it in a world where literally everyone can use magic
>>
As technology and metal take hold as the dominant force of the world, the mages find work to be increasingly more mundane and low paying. Helping sailors move water or summon wind, or working as a fuel source for machines if you're a fire mage, that sort of low quality, low appreciation jobs.

That is of course, unless you volunteer as an explorer of the Old Realm. It's a weird place for non-mages, so those magic folk are always welcome to chart it out and deal with whatever nasty thing tries to escape from it.

So, a recently ended thread about the business of fantasy designs went it's usual course, and leaves me wanting to address something.

>it's fantasy it doesn't have to make sense!

Why do the sticklers for realism almost immediately resort to this ridiculous strawman? The argument is not, and has never been that it doesn't have to make sense; everyone knows good fiction has to make sense. The argument has always been "it's fantasy, it doesn't have to be realistic" which is of course absolutely true, and indeed necessary for fantasy to function, unless one is going to argue that including magic and dragons and other such in a fantasy series automatically makes it bad, in which case why bother?

Just because the weapons and armor within a setting aren't "realistic" doesn't mean they don't make sense, it just means that they ignore the laws of physics as we know them, because the laws of physics limit the available forms of arms and armor.

Kek. Although this image was brought up by a realism stickler as a "good" example of fantasy armor, I knew damn well there was plenty to gripe with, thus proving the point that it's totally "lifted out of a history book" that many such sticklers clamor for.

I personally don't mind some degree of silliness in fantasy designs, but it really depends on each specific case. Also, no explanation is better than an unconvincing explanation for those,

Corrupted Versions of Palatine Blades and Phoenix Termies

Lucius the Eternal used to be a palatine Blade.
Could go with a Slaanesh Melee unit with Whip and Sword that are corrupted Palatine Blades

Could give the Phoenix Termies One-Handed Sonicblaster/Blastmaster

Noise-Bikers with back mounted Doom-Sirens

Cultists-equivalents that are running around with Whips and Daggers that can attack once more after they died

Daemonette Support Units in the style of Baroque masked courtesans with Violins and Harps

You must be mistaken; surely you own the magnetic fields which reside on the hard disk that you own that form the instructions for how the speakers which you own should shape their vibrations in a particular pattern that is pleasing to the ear?

The most recent /tg/ game I'd have to recommend is Pyre. Really fleshed out fantasy world, game is all about creating a party of weirdos and questing together (though instead of fighting, you're playing magic sports), and there's a huge amount of player choice and things you can do to change the course of the story (including just losing games).
>>
>>54820673

I wouldn't really call pyre /tg/

Divinity Original Sin is quite good
>>
>>54820745
I don't know, even though it may not be a traditional RPG, it's /tg/ in the sense that it focuses on world building, adventure, and player choice.

Tyranny is also a good, more traditional recommendation.

Dungeon Meshi is probably one of the better /tg/-esque mangas right now. As far as anime, I thoroughly enjoyed Log Horizon which while intended to be MMO-themed still fits pretty well for more traditional RPG formats (group of individuals with diverse abilities finding creative solutions to obstacles), with a nice dose of political intrigue and mystery which are really more befitting of /tg/ than /v/.
