You might want to check out the alternatehistory.com forums and wiki. Lots of interesting points of divergence there, although "Rome never fell" ones are somewhat annoyingly common. Still, there are many that go with more novel concepts. My favorites are the agricultural timelines. Like Lands of Red and Gold, where a slight mutation in the native yams of the Murray River region led to Australian natives learning the concept of plant cultivation. By the time European explorers land in Australia it's filled with Iron Age civilizations, and that causes all sorts of butterflies. Economic influences from native Australian crops, cultural ones from their religion and philosophies, even a few plagues that spread because unlike in the Americas the larger population density allowed unique diseases to breed in the Australian environment. It's a neat concept.

Any tips for a BBEG wizard fight? The PCs are level 5 and this wizard has been sleeping for thousands of years, imprisoned beneath the ground and only recently waking enough to command his minions on the surface through dreams.
He also has the ability to shift his soul into someone else's body when he dies, and the players have just obtained the artefact that will allow them to kill him permanently. So I'm thinking necromancy and illusion should be his main schools. One of the things I'm considering for the fight is placing a few mirrors throughout the chamber which act as portals for him to summon minions in (they're CR 3 creatures based on the Urdefhan) and the players have to smash them to cut off his reinforcements.
How can I make this an interesting and satisfying fight tactics-wise? I want to avoid making the terrain a blank rectangular room, so verticality and other considerations should help to make it more engaging. I want to make it a difficult fight that one or more PCs may die in if they're not careful but stop short of an actual TPK.
What level would be best for this wizard to fight a level 5 party of a paladin, magus, investigator and ninja along with his summoned minions? Is there anything I should factor in because they can't cast third-level spells yet?

If I get time to post tomorrow I'm thinking about adding a little to Germany by way of that "Metal Men but based on German art movements" ideal. They're super builders and solve problems by creating infrastructure just like Deutsch Liga. They tend to be more exploration based while Deutsch Liga is more disaster response based. They try to build a new Power Gem extractor in Idaho and have to deal with Kirby Monster attacks. They have to quickly race against the clock and build Barsoom a new aquifer before its inhabitants die. They have to help spirit/physical relations by building a city fit for both faeries and people.

-Canadian Man whom has the physiology of an "Aspen Tree": very resistant to the cold, mild-regeneration, can 'smell' water, but has horribly unattractive thick white skin and these suspisious black marks. Originally found out about his power via a trip to the doctors- thought the stripes/marks were cancerous.
-Child with a physical mutation: incredibly grotesquely over-sized tongue complete with an almost snake-like jaw that unhinges to allow it freedom of movement. -Young girl with an alarming physical "Chimera" mutation: Her hands are replaced with horrifying, toothy, almost eel-like black mouths complete with tongues. She can control them like normal hands, even using their tongues as "fingers", but it's like wearing oven mitts. The hands can eat and taste. Also possess a black checker-patterned hide on her arms and legs and a single asemmetric horn on her forehead. Victim of child abuse- lives in a foster home with a loving family.
