God I HATE Scream Wizards now, what was GAME COMPANY thinking with that buff to their power points usage?
196 posts and 37 images submitted.
>>
>>55396318
Well, they wanted to know what would happen if the wizardhobos were at max power at the beginning.
Turns out some spectacular things happen like accidental planeswalking and the occasional maurgarite pandemonium.

Of course, I don't expect you to see the genius in GAME COMPANY's decision to do that.
Scream Wizards is almost perfect now.
>>
>>55396437
Being MAX POWER at the beginning was a mistake. Now they've effectively made a power cap, and breaking it would send the entire community into a frenzy. They're basically guaranteed to fail really hard sometime soon.

Also, can we discuss the Coswald Shipmaster? Why is he so fucking dull and mediocre in power but has such a sweet model?
>>
>>55396318
Dude they brought their hit die down to a d3. That's good enough payment for the buff and then some. Scream wizards should be at least as strong as bloodragers after 5th level...

What's your stance on tragic backstories, /tg/? What makes a backstory truly tragic and not an attempt to be brooding and edgy? Are close deaths overdone? What are some of them that you have enjoyed hearing, just being told or being developed?

>and not an attempt to be brooding and edgy
Brooding and edgy doesn't exclude being tragic.
>>
>>55396359
True, but bad tragic backstories are sometimes used as a cheap attempt to make a character "deep" by giving them a reason to act like a sulking teenager or an iredeemable edgelord
You know what i meant fucknuts

Speaking as a DM of... I want to say 13 years, now? Difference is context and execution.

I've seen good and bad backgrounds use some of the same events (usually a victim of fate, chance, a parent, life, etc.), with my acceptability of them varying on how they've fit into the narrative of the character, and then how they're handled in-game. I'll try my best to explain with two different sort of tragic elements.

>Player Character is an orphan, because abandonment
I mostly see this background with characters trying to be some sort of "I'm alone in this world, and I can only trust myself" mentality. Many have used this one singular element to define appearance, behavior, and interactions with other players. They're not playing, say, Olefeir the Blade for example. They're playing a victim who has a knife. This is the narrative aspect of why this is bad.

But in execution, Victim will be making attempts at roleplaying by actively being foreboding, describe their actions to a very redundant degree, and interaction with other players is strained at best. It would be like watching stereotype of hot topic kid circa 2007 LARP their DeviantArt OC. Bad execution isn't necessarily a role player who could use improvement, bad execution is trying to role play how unique and special the character you've made is.

But on the flip side, I have had players who have had that same background element, but used it as an element, rather than as the entirety of the background. The child who ran away from home and was found by an elderly woodsman in the forest, who took up the same practice. The child who was left at the door of a church, and grew to be one of the most devout and helpful healers of the faith. The child who was left behind by his parents and had to hone his performances to get by, becoming a talented and beloved local bard. In all of these, including Victim with a knife, they are abandoned and have to rapidly grow up. But unlike Victim, it's not the defining aspect.

Once upon a time we were all new to Magic. Think back. What was your first deck? The one that is perhaps so casual and bad that it would get absolutely crushed by the player you are today.

Tell me about it. What did your deck do?

Mine was Merfolk Tribal. But it wasn't the good Merfolk that see some Modern or Legacy play. It was tokens and nonsense with the white Lorwyn Merfolk and pic related.

Pic related is a decent card in Inalla.

My first deck was a no-format U/B counterspell deck that topped out into Harbor Serpent. It was awful but I loved it.

MtG wasn't my first card game rodeo so my first deck was a rakdos aggro in RTR/THS that won a GP and costed around 50 dollars including shocks.

What are the opinions on Force of Will on /tg/?

I know that generally any CCG that isn't MtG gets shat on, but I've not really heard much about FoW.

The Anime art style puts me off, but at the same time it avoids what I feel to be the biggest flaw MTG has in that "Lands" and all your other cards have separate decks.

Hearthstone's a bit TOO simplistic due to lack of coloured mana.

I've played Yu-Gi-Oh and while Link Format is a breath of fresh air in that it slows down the game and makes OTK's harder to do, it can't undo the years of fuckery Konami has done to the game.

> Funny/interesting character quotes/catchphrases thread

Hey /tg/,

I recently joined a new group, and I'm playing a high Char character, which is not something I do often. However, I'm struggling to get into character and really roleplay the char, and I really don't want to be that dude that just say "i will convince him of ________" and then roll the dices for it. If my character's strength is speech, I want to do some proper talking and have interesting dialogues!!

So here is where I need /tg/'s help: I'm not used to this sort of character and I need to come up with ideas of things I can say. This goes from catchphrases (that I can repeat every once in a while), stories I can use as examples, or basically anything good quote you find handy.

My character is a sailor that has sailed to everywhere and met people from every corner of the world, so one of the ideas I have is to often tell long (and mostly irrelevant) stories to use as examples for whatever I'm trying to convince people of.

Here is an example:
> Trying to convince the rest of the party we should settle for what we have
> Tell long ass story about the time I tried to bang 3 girls from <insert random region> but it ended being too much so I just focused on the hottest one
> Everyone is now like "ok that is a really unnecessary example, but maybe you are right"

Also, random quote thread so feel free to just share any funny/interesting thing your characters or NPCs have said along the years.

I like the sound of this as a thread. It can be hard thinking up one-liners. I've been doing a great deal of this lately, as the party in my game has a hype-man/helper of sorts named Jeremy. He's a gay badger-man Bard/Barbarian multi-class with a Bronx accent, and serves as meat-wall, heal-bot, and buff guy. I try to break it down by what he's doing with his words.

A buff spell gets cutesy quips and limericks:
>"My favorite renewable source of energy is man-power!"

For Bardic Music, I pick thematically-appropriate songs I know that I can quickly convert to be setting appropriate on-the-fly.
>Favorites of mine and the group's include Freebird, Turn The Page, We Will Rock You, generally stadium rock favorites are what he goes for
>My table gets into it and joins in most times
>>
>Playing DH1
>Crazy Slaanesh Cultist pulls grenade out of my characters hand
>''FINE! I ONLY WANTED THE PIN ANYWAY!''

Quality discussion aside, critical role has live events, stars, best-ofs and spin-offs, it is here to stay and I applaud them for that. How do you feel about Roleplaying games becoming pop culture?

Bonus question: Do you remember the kid that claimed to know someone who gets paid to GM?

I kinda like the video game scene right now. Autists screeching around in their teens buying EA 'n shit, hipsters in their twenties having their own, slightly more expensive games and the 30+ crowd has a full library of their favorite systems library from one to two generations ago.

Replace EA with D&D5, hipster games with Pathfinder and favorite system with oWoD, Cthulhu and aD&D

How do I Raiden, The Rain Transformed?
>>
I'm having a bit of trouble coming up with a character for an upcoming Starfinder game, maybe once the book with all the new races comes out I'll get more inspiration, but for now I was thinking of porting one of my old Pathfinder characters with the story reason being that he was basically Han Solo'd in Carbonite for however long it's been since it became the future.

The problem there is that mah boi was a Dex-based Catfolk Paladin, and unfortunately from what I've researched there aren't many options in the new classes for me to properly replicate that kind of thing, so obviously the next best thing would be to port the Paladin class. Only problem THERE is that Paladin's numbers are waaay out of sync with what Starfinder tries to do, and the Starfarer's Companion book didn't exactly impress my DM.

Any suggestions or should I just scrap the idea and try to move on to something else?
