That's actually a pretty neat idea. You'd probably need specialized equipment, though, considering most of the regular stuff is made out of paper or cardboard.

How would you go about it, /tg/?

It'd be a good way to play Forbidden Island.

Alright, /tg/, I need a bit of help.

I'm working on a ruleset for a small-scale World of Darkness LARP focused on Mage: the Ascension. When I say "small-scale", I mean that I expect about 20-30 players or so. Little more than an afternoon of fucking around with friends, really.

Here's my situation:

1) The setting will be the old WoD, but I don't like the rock-paper-scissors resolution the old Mind's Eye Theatre has.

2) I like the card-based resolution from the new MET books a lot more, and already used something similar once with some success.(I didn't know of MET at the time, so it wasn't the same thing, but it ended up being sort of similar).

3) Combat, however, will be solved with boffer weapons for melee and NERF weapons for ranged. This is because I know my players, and they all come from the boffer LARP world and will not want combat resolution via cards, rock-paper-scissors, or other non-physical methods. If it matters, we're in Europe.

4) I really do not expect much combat or action. These players already take part in combat-intensive LARP events, and the idea behind this oWoD LARP is to give them a different experience, much more relaxed and laid-back. The focus will be on investigative work, occult research, and politics, mostly.

5) I want there to be minimal or no "social combat" systems to handle social interaction between players. I don't want rules for being "convinced" by someone, or for lying and detecting lies. (of course, until someone brings supernatural powers into the mix.)

So, this much is established.

(continued in the next post)

My main problem is how to exactly handle non-combat challenges.

I want to use a character sheet that will look as similar as possible to oWoD sheets for easier recognition. It will probably have a bunch of skills on it, like "Occult", "Investigate", "Academics", "Computers" and so on.

These are my ideas:

#1: Skills are ranked 0-3. When a player goes up against a static challenge ("I want to hack this computer"), the GM will set a fixed skill requirement. ("To hack this computer you need the skill Computers at 2 or higher"). No random element. If two players are competing ("Let's see who can hack the server the fastest"), the one with the higher skill wins.

#2: Skills are ranked 0-5, plus a system of merits that could grant them +0 to +2 sometimes. Each player has a deck of cards ranked 1 to 10. When a player goes up against a static challenge, he draws a card and adds it to his score in the relevant skill. For normal difficulty, he needs to score a 9. If two players are competing, they compare scores.

Obviously, method #1's advantage is that it's simpler, less fiddly, more direct. However it means that some player's point investments can feel hollow if he bought a skill to, say, 2, only to hear he needs a 3. It would be more difficult to balance all the challenges in a way that players don't feel cheated or constricted.

Method #2 introduces a random element which means that there are a lot more variables. On the other hand it requires more GM supervision and introduced the "let me try too" problem, where players just try doing something whenever they feel lucky. Player A with Computers 5 fails to hack the computer? player B, with Computers 1, steps in, says "let me try too", gets lucky, and hacks it.

So, in conclusion: what would you do, /tg/? What method do you prefer? And do you have any other advice or suggestions on how to handle an oWoD Mage: the Ascension LARP?

In terms of actually gaming, I had a great time playing Guard. So many dice to roll.....
>>
>>47440163
Just bouncing off your thread how the fuck do Guard work? I see that an infantry platoon is 2 squads and then a platoon command unit, but can squad A, and Squad B operate basically entirely separate from each other, no need to maintain distance etc.? I assume that the platoon system is so guard can get a shitload of infantry on the table without going over the CAD.

But I've also noticed you can add heavy weapon squads and special weapons squads, but if you killed one of those auxiliary squads for example does it count as first blood, or does the whole platoon need to be wiped out? and do these auxiliary squads also work as independent units that can run around and do their own things?

Also how does it work when you bring Chimeras into the mix? Should you get one for each squad and then have the platoon command slog it on foot or should you get a Chimera for them as well?

I want to get into collecting either the Warhammer fantasy or 40k miniatures and obviously play the tabletop game as well. Which would you recommend is better to get started with?

I like the fantasy setting better honestly but I've heard the new edition or whatever sucks.

asking staff at a GW store is a good way to get into it, generally there are people there playing/paining that you can also ask

the GW staff do exist to pressure you into buying codexes and rule books and shit though, so just be mindful of that until you knwo that you want to commit to the game
>>
>>47439509

There is no "new edition" Fantasy has been killed off, and then replaced with a shitty skirmish game with that overtly takes inspiration from 40k.

I let my players choose what kind of game they wanted me to run next and what they decided on was a hard sf game about setting up a colony on an alien world.

I've got two weeks to cobble together an ecosystem and work out some ideas for adventures. I'm going to keep the planet fairly earth-like, have the local biology close enough that they can eat each other, etc.

I've found Snaiad, which is fairly well done example and I'm planning to take inspiration from it, but unfortunately I don't think my players would be OK with all the huge cocks on the creatures so I can't steal directly.

Some ideas for exciting things too happen:

>A piece of equipment or group of personnel (possibly the PCs themselves) have trouble landing and have to crash some distance from the colony. Cue journey through the wilderness.
>Food supplies are lost to bad weather or eaten by local wildlife. They have to work out what native plants and animals are good to eat and then gather enough to feed the colony.
>The colony is stalked by a dangerous local predator. They have to hunt it down.
>A huge storm is heading towards the colony, they have to relocate to an area which offers better shelter.

Depending on how hard you want to fuck them in the first place?

Read Redliners by David Drake.

Or have them discover that some native species or other is sapient, and then throw bureaucracy and aliens rights activists at them.

Or, you know, give people the information they need to make educated suggestions? Are they part of a corp? A government? How much infrastructure and population are they getting to start with? What's the tech level like?
>>
>>47439054
I don't really have any concrete ideas but you might wanna look into ancient life on earth. there's shit that used to walk around on this planet that looks thoroughly alien
>>
>>47439054
>Food supplies are lost to bad weather or eaten by local wildlife

Y'know, I was never a big X-Files fan, but one thing that always stuck with me was an Indian story from the Southwest about a crashed UFO, and how no animals would touch the alien corpse. Even years later, it didn't rot (I think) because no Earth decomposers would touch it.

More recently I saw/read something where an astronaut died on an alien world, and something big tried to eat the corpse, but then immediately got sick, vomited it back up, and died from being poisoned by Earthlife.

It's surprisingly well thought-out for being a cash grab. The rules are dated, but some of the concepts are ahead of its time.

The number of games with both good Dogfighting and good Mecha combat rules are rather low unfortunately.

/tg/, I need help fleshing out a setting. Now, don't get me wrong, the show provides a lot, but I'd like some help coming up with stuff that happens in this universe, as that isn't as touched upon in the series. Nothing too spectacular, but I'd like to get ideas about what stories we can tell (or that we want to tell) with what we're given so far.

I mean, there's Homeworld, this fast-paced, fast-expanding empire reaching out into the galaxy for reasons unknown and a few gems resist them because of Homeworld's invasions and annihilation of non-gem species. In a Steven Universe roleplaying game, do we want to talk about other rebels in different sectors of the universe? Or Homeworld gems doing high-exploration throughout the galaxy, meeting races much more terrible than they are?

If some gems can fuse with humans, what horrifying things do you want to fuse with gems.

What kind of stories would you like to tell with this setting?

I'm also thinking about rules and such, but that's for another time.
21 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
Homeworld is too strict and too regimented, everyone has a specific place doing specific things within their specific castes and whatnot. I'm not saying that there's no stories to be told there but I would argue that the most interesting stories are those of people being broken out of that way of life. I would therefore argue that rogue gem factions make for much more stories.

As for gems fusing with humans, there's not actually anything to indicate that it's possible. Steven is the exception as he himself is half organic himself.
>>
>>47437274
One significant area of exploration is dealing with non-human, non-Gem aliens. Homeworld must have some enemies out there to have so many soldier Gems and military weapons.
>>

For all the shitty bastards in A Song of Ice and Fire, those books have one of the best paladin characters I've ever seen. Ser Barristan Selmy is an old man but still a skilled warrior, who just wants to do his duty in protecting the king, but instead he is doomed to suffering and exile. Even there, he has yet to sacrifice honor or justice.

While it's not about them predominantly, the Traitor Son series features Paladins and magic Knights.
The main cast also gets more noble as the series goes on and the main character develops into a muscle wizard
