I just got Dungeon World today, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy and Gygaxian inside, coating my soul in a soothing blend of old-school-feel and modern, accessible mechanics.
Tell me about your experiences with Dungeon World! What pitfalls should I avoid in GMing? Do you have a preferred setting to apply to DW, whether it be homebrew or adapted from another game? How best to handle things like a dragon taking a turn to breathe fire or an enemy to cast a spell? (I guess I'm just a little fuzzy on when special monster moves which don't result from PC-initiated hack-and-slash should occur, as a possibly penalty of a failed roll or as an action lent from another monster which skips its turn? Holy shit this question got complex question mark?)

I've had quite a few sessions now with different players and enjoyed it thoroughly. In my analogy, DW is closer to improv theater with dice than a videogame with pen and paper.

If I have time to prepare special moves or it seems intuitive to make them up on the spot, I'll have them. But mostly this all falls into defy danger. If it seems like something needs to be rolled for but it's not entirely obvious what, defy danger is probably the answer.

I mostly start making a setting with just the player-races. No need having an elf-themed setting when nobody is an elf. (If I want all characters do to be in a society of whimsical creatures, I like to think I can do better than pointy ear humans).

My friends and I once got drunk and stoned and roleplayed a game of Shadows Over Camelot. It's a cooperative board game about the Knights of the Round Table trying to stop the fall of Camelot to dark powers. Unfortunately, one of you might be a secret traitor. Suspicion festers in the air.
We ended up treating it more like a medieval version of "Blazing Saddles" than "The Usual Suspects" and it was fantastic. Works best with just four players.

I lose track of time while Charlotte's tickling attack continues. Cleptesse's sky remains a bit overcast after the prior night's storm. The smell of fish and a subtle hint of death lingers upon the fog that rolls in through the town through the morning, likely from the Kraken's silent visit to the city. The streets are lively as they were when you arrived late yesterday. Markets overflowing with slimy Drezhar traders and the buyers warring with them to haggle a price both parties deem a “steal.”
In some back alleys that you'd stolen away to, you revealed your secret to the knowledge-loving Victoria. The girl's eyes remain locked upon you as you walk through Cleptesse, her feathery antennae seeming to buzz with all the thoughts she must be having. You can only wonder to yourself if getting to meet a real-life impostor should really be such a big deal. Then again, she's not quite the ethical type.
Odette's eyes linger upon the girl for a time until finally she takes your hand and pulls a bit ahead to whisper into your ear, “Are you sure you should trust her? All she'd need to do is shout impostor and we're both on the chopping block.” Her voice is stern, yet measured.

It's not exactly a war story, but I'd recommend Vatta's War, starting with Trading in Danger. There is a major war situation involved, but I'd classify more as a political thriller.
The Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell is a cool space opera inspired by Xenophon's ten thousand.
Dread Empire's Fall is a great hard sci-fi space opera about an oppressive space empire that has subjugated and assimilated multiple races (including humanity) into an inversion of the Star Trek federation and the turmoil surrounding its end. All the ships are named funny things like "The bombing of New Dehli" or "Nuking of San Francisco"

Savage violence is a pretty damn solid way to play GURPS. I'd suggest 150 points with a generous 70 point disadvantage limit, but make them take at least one powerful enemy in common that could kill the fuck out of them if they are careless or stupid or unlucky.
Show them a few simple templates, like Big Strong Brute, noble swordsman, clever lady with sword, and doorstop.

How would you stat the ability to return to an earlier point in your life, like loading/saving in a video game? Basically:
>upon saving, you create a set point in time and space that you can return to later
>upon loading, you return to that point in time and space, with the same items you had when you saved, but retaining your current set of memories
>you can only ever have one save file
>no one else "remembers" anything from the future, unless they have temporal inertia
>dying does not automatically return you to your save point, unless you have at least one extra life
