The fires have died down from the early morning blaze, hovering vehicles drift over the wreckage firing foam from their outstretched nozzles. The building they float over has collapsed, a sink hole leading to the tunnels beneath New Prescott is all that remains of the once humble shop. The news covers it for most of the day on the local channels as your hive watches from the shadows.

Beneath the city taidarens skitter and whistle with glee. A large raft is hauled along the murky waters of the tunnels pulled by the hands of several dozen triplets. The bulky machine held in their care creaks occasionally as the taidaren technicians examine the intricate and highly precise machinery for damage. Before long, the raft enters the makeshift city, pulled across the water to a waiting area where hundreds of young taidarens cheer on their brothers and cousins for a job well done, and one of your own clone agents examines the device for damage as they guide it into its place along the driftwood and scrap metal docks of the shanty town under-city.

Disclaimer: resource management has changed drastically, and has likely gone down in many places, but so has costs. Income and costs may continue to change based on your feedback and balancing issues that may arise. Please forgive any horrible issues that may arise as we switch over to Hive Queen Quest second edition. As a quick introductory course, here are the basic rules.

Every planet has a stat for every resource ranging from 0-100 representing quantity, availability, and ease of extraction and processing of that resource, as well as a development stat that represents the level of infrastructure present on the planet. Drone population will rise automatically with the development score, automating worker production as well as maintaining a basic but competent militia of drones of a balanced variety chosen from your designs.
To calculate a planet's income, you add the planet's resource stat to the stat bonus of any structures, then multiply by the development score. Due to balance issues, nutrient income is multiplied by 1k as well, using the following equations.

(Nutrient stat + structures) * 1k * dev score + modifiers = Nutrient income total
(Metal stat + structures) * dev score + modifiers = Metal income total

The upkeep of planets and their structures are no longer given as hard numbers, but are taken from the planet's income total or infer penalties to one or more of the planet's stats. Some may have other effects or special costs or effects, both good and bad, and in general is all subject to change based on feedback.

What has your experience with the PBtA system been?
What are its strengths? What are its weaknesses?
What PBtA game do you find the most enjoyable?
81 posts and 12 images submitted.
>>
Strenghts:
>Oddball characters and general craziness. If other games try to be The Road or Left 4 Dead, PBTA is Mad Max and proud of it.
>"Cinematic". Like all VB games, it's made to give support to the action but never get on its way. No MUH REALISMS AND BALANCED PHYSICS here.
>Really simple to learn and play. Has just the right amount of crunch to get you going, but never gets cluttered.

Weaknesses:
>You'll have a hard time homebrewing it. PBTA works by setting rather rigid character templates (maybe not very rigid if you're used to D&D, but if you come from, say, Savage Worlds, it's very restrictive) and it's pretty hard to make new templates or a free character creation system that balances well with the rest of the rules. If you're trying to play PBTA in your setting, you'll have a really bumpy road ahead of you. At least the setting is quite vague so you can give it your own twist.

I played a couple games with it, in wich all players were members of a post-apoc biker gang, in a world where almost everything was some kinda pop culture reference. Like, we had a tribe of bikers that dressed like 19th century dragoons, carried Union Jacks and venerated Ed, the zombie god of glorious death, and the biker gang the players belonged to was one long Pink Floyd reference. Had lots os fun, would want to try Icelandic Sagas.
>>
>What has your experience with the PBtA system been?
Played about a half dozen of them. Had a blast pretty much every game. I'd easily call it my favorite system to play. I'll give about any PBtA game a shot at least once, even if I don't normally have much interest in the theme of it.

>What are its strengths?
- In a "good" PBtA game, the theme is super strong. Monster of the Week? On-point to simulate Buffy, Supernatural, X-files and any other supernatural MotW game. Monsterhearts? Sexy supernatural teen drama. etc. The games tweak the mechanics to reinforce their chosen theme and often end up making it a stellar experience.
- Easy to pick up and keep track of. Don't have to think much about numbers and can focus on story.
- Easy to adapt to a different PbtA game if you want to switch to a new theme.

>What are its weaknesses?
- Players who have trouble speaking up and contributing will flag without a GM holding their hand.
- Players who don't dig narrative games will get bored.
- Longer campaigns are more difficult to do without switching out characters or restarting a character from ground zero.

>What PBtA game do you find the most enjoyable?
For me, Monsterhearts. I love sexy, twisted character drama and "superpowers".
>>
Nice system but it falls apart after few sessions. It really isn't made for longer stories.

You are Adrian Brown, a twenty five year-old third-year medical student living an otherwise normal American life in search of employment. That was until you woke up inside a derelict and demon-infested hospital with four other victims of short-term memory loss. Together, the five of you managed to somehow survive by negotiating with demons and defeating those that were not so amicable. And upon escaping, the all of you realized that it wasn’t as simple as that.

Task Force 666 a multinational organization dedicated to combating hostile demons and those that would use them for ill intentions. And the hellhole you just went through? That was your ‘job interview’, one that you passed with flying colors. When properly offered employment as an agent among the ranks, you accepted without too much hesitation or second thoughts. Duty to humanity and whatnot.

You are now a Devil Summoner in the service of the Task Force, and the de-facto leader of East Coast Operations Division IV Carina Squad. It is your duty to protect mankind from all threats involving the demonic, but how you choose to carry out your orders is entirely up to you. The choices you make shall not only affect those around you, but the fate of the entire world itself…

With the destruction of the dryad’s grove, there is little reason for both you and MacKay to stay here. And that’s ignoring the two demons that are still there, who’s glares you can feel digging into your back. It does not bother you…too much. Even though there’s a tiny part inside of you that questions if you could have done things differently, you can walk and rest easy knowing that you made the best choice with the available options.

But with that said, you have no desire to get into an argument with the spriggan and the goblin any time soon. And even if you did, they’re going to be the ones to go to you. You’re not that much of an ass to loudly proclaim the moral superiority of your argument. Especially when the death of their friend just got twenty times worse than it already was to begin with.

You peel off your helmet, rubbing the back of your sleeve across your sweaty forehead. It comes away damp, sticky with an unholy amalgamation of sweat, soot, and all other kinds of unpleasantness.

Christ, what a fucking mess. Both situational and otherwise.

RE:Monster EX Recap

You are, at present, in a dungeon.
Which, rather than the traditional ten foot room, is something approaching a pocket dimension, watched over by some sort of god and/or divine-type being.

You are currently in the process of being a giant spider- An Arachne, to be specific.

You are also currently in the process of fighting off what appears to be hordes of invaders. From different time periods. In the midst of a village that is also a mish-mash of time periods.

There's a lot of 'currently' to process.

How did you wind up here, anyway?

"You were really excited about the dungeon, and wanted to go as soon as possible?"
Ah.
You're doing the thinking out loud thing.

"You're still doing it."
"Thank you, Nin."
"You're welcome."
"It was more of a metaphorical question, yes."
"Yes? You start from the beginning with those, right?"
"What? No, a metaphoe is a-"
"The Queen's legend starts as all do! With humble beginnings, born in a mighty forest, far afield-"

You've made a terrible mistake.

Welcome to A Song of Revenge and Gold: House Malroy Quest. In which you take the reins of a House of storied glorious past since Aegon’s Conquering, but whose fortunes have taken a turn for the worse in the doom that Robert’s Rebellion brought. You are Brynden Malroy, second son to Lord Vamos Malroy and Lady Esemella Hayford and the last living heir to Steadhold and House Malroy. The year is 285AC, two years after the Rebellion and a year after your return to Westeros.

House Malroy is a pre-genned House designed around the idea of a story within the Crownlands of a House fiercely loyal to the Targaryens and their attempts to live in this new world after Robert’s Rebellion. Lord Brynden Malroy is as well pre-genned but will take direction from the players in his ways and how he develops himself further. This Quest will be moderately more story driven than others of its kind, but the development of the House and her lands will take just as much importance.

If you’ve played one of the many Quests within the ASoIaF setting the rules of the SIFRP system should be known. I will be using the Game of Thrones edition, as well as a few of the expansions namely OOSP and a few house rules which will be explained as we come to them. If you have questions about how things work or why certain actions are taken I can explain them as we go along. In truth this is a learning experience for me as well.

“Not until I give the word.”

“Understood Lord.”

Glancing around Yondril you find three faces looking at you with wildly varying visages. Ser Lyonel Langly looks at you with disconcern, his face hardly showing emotion, his hands and feet unbound as he sat in his chair beside the other two. Marceline Sand, the saboteur, looks at you with absolute horror, or rather around you. Her wrists strained against the ropes keeping them in place, the marks there were the least of her concerns however, her mouth was an absolute disaster from Elionwy’s beating, dried blood trailed down from her ear where Obella had gotten to her likely never having healing properly, and above her eye was the unhealed cut from Yondril’s hooked knife. The last Belidos, of the five Captains of the Bright Banners is the most active of the three, he struggles against the iron restraints that keeps his arms and legs in place, Lucas Longwaters stand behind him half-swording his blade in full plate. The look upon his face is of absolute and true spite, fury courses through his veins his breath a ragged anger fueled thing, his eyes bulging so hard you’d think they fit to burst.

Unlatching Yondril’s hooked blade from your belt and handing it to him you see Lady Sand’s expression go from abject horror to total dread, tears beginning to swell in her eyes and the incoherent babbling leaving her lips. Lucas taps her shoulder with the flat of his blade as she begins pushing back on the floor in an attempt to escape. Yondril begins at his whetstone as he often did, crossing the room to where your ‘guests’ sat as you took your place at a desk across from them, propping your feet up and fixing them with a level gaze.

“My dear Lady wife will be joining us shortly.” you say flatly, “In that time I’ll be catching up on some letters, so do keep it down if you would be so kind. I’d recommend taking the time to truly consider how important it is to keep those secrets.”

Breaking the sanguine wax seahorse seal from Ser Jon Longwaters you find a rather quick and to the point letter from your friend and ally. In short his men had begun to track the pirates that had been plaguing him and the shipments of iron inbound to your lands. All signs had begun to lead back towards a small cove outside of the Blackwater Bay, a few of their skippers were lost out about that way before his men had to break off their pursuits. At a guess the captain of his flagship had said there was seven to ten ships, a good handful of them had been the small skippers, a couple of fat cogs that lumbered behind the main force and most importantly their own flagship stripped down galley that dipped 60 oars. The Kingcrab if you had to guess yourself. The Velaryons were still being difficult in offering aid though he was in the process of finishing another five ships and manning them to equal their own numbers. He requested a visit, either you coming to him post Tourney in Highgarden that he did not intend to go to, or him to you once you returned home, whichever you preferred. Mostly to talk shop and plan on how to deal with them, and though not as importantly for you to meet his newborn daughter Isis Longwaters. You smile briefly remembering when he asked leave to honor your sister, all the better that Lorelei had been born, no doubt Obella had already informed Lady Saraya Vollion and they were making plans as woman were want to do.

The second letter was sealed with the blue eagle of House Arryn, you were loathe to see it, assuming you were being called to court again as you so often had been in the past year and a hald. You were instead pleasantly greeted with your sister’s handwriting. King’s Landing had been good to her you found, though the way she wrote you had imagined Lady Lysa Tully standing over her shoulder as she penned it. Much of it was retreading the same waters as she had in the previous letter but at the end she gave you a gut full of turmoil.

“Six months is all the longer I may stay at court Brynden. Lord Arryn is doing his best to stave off Royce’s requests, demands rather, to have me return home so he may see his children. Though he can do little when the bastard shows up upon the doorstep of the Red Keep with the Queen in tow. You should have seen the look she gave me, how I wished to strike her right in that pompous face of hers...” You disliked it immensely, the assumption had been you would be keeping her out of harm’s way for far longer than that. Six months was hardly any time at all upon thought, hardly worth the deal you had made with Lady Tully at Obella’s expense no less.

Though the last letter gave you a degree of peace regarding the matter. The simple thing was written in rough form, no doubt by a man half practiced at the skill, the black wax poorly poured upon it and without any sigil. It read, “We’ve captured the wagon milord. Bringing her home in two weeks tops. Septon’s word was good. -R” A surprising bit of good news in all of the muck and mire of otherwise difficult times. Bribes inbound to the High Septon himself, who would have thought it. Perhaps there Septon Tytos truly did have good intentions.

The door creaks open pulling you from your letters and Obella strides in, the clicks of her heels causing Marceline Sand to cringe and shrink into her chair further. She regards your guests with a dismissive glance before coming to your side, you stand to offer her a seat a gesture that is accepted with a kiss upon your check. Mason closes the door entering last, giving you a quick nod before taking up position behind Obella and yourself, his hand rested upon the pommel of his mace.

Welcome everyone, new and old players alike! This is Tundra civ, a civ thread series in a fictional, non-fantasy setting where you play as the rulers of the White Republic, a nation in a world similar to our own.
Check out the pastebin for story, technologies, stats etc (updating it right now)
http://pastebin.com/t7gWa2pa
And an archive of previous threads if you want to skim through some of them.
http://archive.4plebs.org/_/search/boards/pol.tg/subject/Civ/username/Civ%20bulgar/page/1/
Previously on Tundra civ:
The leaders of the mysterious Organisation - the Four Spirelords - are no longer in hiding. They have unleashed the power of their ancient technologies against the nations of our world. With armies of automatons they emerged from the depths, declaring war on all who oppose them. Now, over half a year later, they have established themselves on the territory of the New Pajit Union - they've set up massive factories and have put the locals to toil in the fields, mines and assemblies to support the growing metal armies and their armored masters.
The Spirelords have now launched an invasion on one of our largest cities, Victory - underneath it lies one of their coveted Vaults. With a large part of our forces away in Ocras, the situation seems dire as Victory is under attack by land, sea and air.
Pre-war stats:

>Population:187 000 000 (79% white, 14 % chink,2%hibibi, 3% darkskin,2% pacharnati)
>Colonials: 28 800 000 Eyerdar 16 200 000 Veita 16 200 000 Ocras

The Spirelords would be hard-pressed to occupy Victory - its metropolitan area has a population of over 3 million and half as much live in the surrounding suburbs and towns. Their goal is to break through our defences as quickly as possible and seize the contents of the Vault, whose Key they hold.

Here's my suggestion to fight off them or at least stop them from taking the Vault.

Barricade everything, make it as hard as possible and take as long as possible to get to the vault, and then we basically hold a Stalingrad in Victory City. Our elite forces shall sneak onto anything that looks like a Flagship, and destroy it, and killing a spirelord if it is there, and taking the key.

Up to a million militiamen can fight to defend Victory, one of our most well-fortified cities, but the enemy has us beat hard on quality. The ships they've deployed wouldn't be able to match our Grand Fleet, but most of our naval forces are engaged in Ocras, along with a large part of our best men, our airforces and armored support. The defenders of Victory won't be able to call upon muc in terms of armor, but there is one other option available - in a secret military facility in the steppes we have at our disposal two operational atomic bombs with blast yields estimated at 20 kilotons of TNT each.
At this moment most of the enemy forces are loaded onto naval and aerial transports - a part of their vanguard has already disembarked. It is believed that if we were to use the bombs now at the enemy's main fleet the blast radius would at most affect only a small part of the coastal settlements around Oldranger Port.
We are sending as many forces as we can to Victory right now. The President must make an important choice.
A.The defenders of Victory will do their job - evacuate noncombatant civilians and use all conventional means we have to defend the city
B.Any man, woman or child who can take up arms will fight to defend Victory from the invaders!
C.Pull back what we can from Ocras to reinforce Victory - the airforces in Ocras will be able to arrive in about a day
D.Drop the A-Bomb
E.Other option

There was only one way this could have ended.

You and the Ascetic, you were simply too far apart, too opposed to each other, and each other's ideals for any peace to exist between you. As you respect the gods, the Ascetic devoured them. As you sought peace, he drove the land to the brink of war. Even if you had no personal grudge against him, there was no way that you could ever find a middle ground. Even if, by some miracle, you could reach a compromise, would he really respect that?

No. You'd spent the rest of your life looking over your shoulder, waiting for him to strike. That's no way to live.

When you met him there, in the ancient devotional tunnels beneath the Dragon's Head, there would only be one survivor. Perhaps that had been decided long ago, when you were both born. Perhaps this moment was always written into fate.

It doesn't matter much now, does it?

“Easy there, easy,” a soft voice murmurs to you, as someone helps to lift you upright, “Wake up Ira... Damn it, wake up already!” As the voice grows hard and irritated, you finally crack open your lonesome eye. As your mind returns to the present moment, you feel cold water around your legs, and a terrible ache in your chest.

You're awake, you grunt, you're wide awake.

“Good,” Soma sighs, taking a careful pace away from you as you stand, “I heard shouting... I thought I was too late...”

You're fine, you assure her, you've had worse. There was the time you caught a knife in the guts for one thing, and then there was the eye thing. You could go on, but you decide against it. Instead, you ask about the battle up above – how did it turn out?

“When I left, we had broken their backs,” Soma explains, “Something happened, I don't know what. All of a sudden, their attack just... faltered. Like every one of them had been stunned for a brief moment, the exact same moment. If it hadn't been for that, I might not be here right now. I mean, a lot of the soldiers didn't make it as it is – they were on the front line, protecting the rest of us with their lives.” She falls silent at that, her face grim. “I've had my problems with the military before, but seeing them like that...”

As she talks, more to herself than to you, you begin to fumble through the water and find the Ascetic's carcass. Lifting it from the water, you dump it on the stone path by the side of the tunnel. What was it that Mandragora said, so long ago? Something about not leaving garbage in someone's garden.

Well, that applies now. You'll take the body up and burn it. Really, it's more than the bastard deserved. Then, as you pick up the head, an idea comes to mind. Maybe you won't burn it – not straight away, at least.

“Are you taking-” Soma begins as you start to drag the body away, “Okay, you're taking it with you. Okay. Wait up!”

Soma is able to guide you back through the tunnels, through tight corridors and wide hallways, until you reach the entrance. All the time she leads you forwards, the only sound is that of the Ascetic's body scraping across the stone tiles. It's only when the stairs up are in sight that she finally speaks up.

“Okay, stop!” she pleads, putting herself between you and the stairs, “Why are you taking that with us?”

It's simple, you explain, you might be able to get some answers out of him.

“Ira, he's dead,” Soma says slowly, pausing before pointing at the corse, “Ira, you cut his head off.”

Still, you shrug, you've got your methods. Nodens taught you a little trick that might come in handy...

“Sure, why not?” she sighs, “Okay, look... I don't know what you're going to do to that thing, but you should do it somewhere private. Somewhere quiet. If you had other plans...”

Maybe you do. In the aftermath of such a bloody affair, you'll have a lot of catching up to do. Is there anywhere you should start, you ask Soma, has anyone been asking after you?

“Well, I'm sure Ra and the Emperor would like to know the situation,” Soma says, “But, personally... I'd start with the hospital. There were a lot of wounded men and women. Friends, you know?”

As is so often the way.

>Visit the wounded

Let's get this done so we don't have to keep carrying a head around.

You are Sallazar, a young wizard who has recently left the army. You have taken a teaching job at Egwen Girls Convent.

In addition the Headmaster of the school wants you to run the schools adventurers club, to give some of the schools more unusual girls something fun to do.

The club is really starting to work together – girls encouraging each other and friendly rivalries instead of actual ones starting.

Anlanesa, Cleya and Chame are sticking to their punishment and have accepted it with bad grace, but you'll need to see if it's going to actually get them to work together, or merely tolerate each other.

Before you know it, it's the weekend again, and you're on the lightning rail taking the club to a new dungeon. Fortunately this one is much closer – only a few hours travel. Emerging from the station you realise you're in some tiny town in the mountains, and easily spot a few other adventuring clubs, including Soaring Falcons and the Disciples of St. Angius – Absolem gives you a friendly wave as he herds his charges into the forest.

“What's the schedule?” Thunder Drum asks as you corral the girls to prevent wandering off. You read the instructions the Daves have given you “'from the station head 3 miles west'” you recite, looking up at the sun you nod into the forest “follow the Disciples of St. Angius.”

Lucinda gives you a disbelieving look “walk, through the forest, for miles? We'll get filthy!”

“Yes Lucky” you say, still studying your instructions.

“But there will be all sorts of vermin and animals and slimy horrible stuff!” moans the young succubus soulborn, clearly more at home in an urban environment.

“It'll be character building” you reply, smiling but still not looking at her.

“Lucinda!” admonishes Taynathil. You look up just in time to see Lucinda gives you some very rude hand-gestures questioning your sexual preferences.

Your smile widens into a grin “thank you for volunteering to carry my bag.”

The walk through the forest is peaceful, well mostly, there are a few grumbles, but before too long you've reached another village, or at least, the ruins of one. And nearby, a camp where the other groups are setting up, as well as the Daves support staff.

You look around for the Daves, only to hear them yelling for all the club leaders – they're ready to give the mission briefing. Leaving your club to find a place to pitch their tents in the clearing, you head towards the yelling, finding the Daves gathered around a large illusionary map of the village, along with the heads of another ten or so club leaders.

“Ok, ok” says Dave “we all here yeah, good? Right, so this village is where we're playing. Scenario is this: village got overrun by orcs and goblins, some villagers got away. But buried under the floor in the temple here” he indicates the largest building “is a sacred icon of Maros. The groups will be told that they need to battle or sneak past the goblins and orcs to get it, but!” he holds up a finger for emphasis “we'll be introducing some other elements, it'll be different for each team: might be a rampaging monster, might be mercenaries or just bad weather or something else. Either way it can seriously hinder a group, or can be used to help them if they turn it to their advantage. Points are awarded based on time taken to retrieve the icon and get it out of the village, and taken away for every team member who get taken down. Some of the hazards are worse than others – some will grant bonus points but by the gods they'll be bad, any questions?”

As the other club heads ask their own questions you ponder which team to use for the event.

Because succubi are literally baby's first fiend, man of refined taste will settle for no less than railing Glabrezu.

Lamenters: That mix of tragedy and heroism, basically doomed to be under dogs in the 40k universe. If there's any chapter that deserves to be promoted from "extra" to "main cast" its the lamenters.

Carcharodons.

Rip and tear, take everything that isn't nailed down to restock supplies, and kidnap all age appropriate children to replenish the ranks.

Hunt the enemies of man where they feel safest
