Early modern is a lot more interesting than medieval in general.

Yea, I never got all the wanking over the Middle Ages

Early modern age has a distinct flavor all its own

Nice balance between romanticism and enlightenment themes

It was the last stage of history where science and magic were one

>Dark Heresy is set into an appealing world of grim future. The original mechanics however become unsatisfying very soon as the combat, investigation, items, psychic powers do not answer to those expectations the lore of the Warhammer 40,000 sets around them. This very comprehensive package includes carefully planned and play tested system that allows far more interesting and challenging approach to this game and the characters. Main features in this package are: redesigned combat with all weapons, items and armour converted to this system too; redesigned use of psychic powers and complete lists of all psychic powers converted to these mechanics; rewritten talents, traits and skills to make the character's far more able and interesting; redesigned character sheets that feature far more interesting way to record your character; rewritten scum career; mechanics to character Influence and Renown; completely rewritten critical effects system and other damage models. Also the new version of the Advanced Dark Heresy features far more faster ways to handle all the things without losing any finesse that was introduced in the first version.

Would dwarves have different ideas about intoxication than other races, because drinking is so prominent in their culture?

Maybe it's my experience as a fraternity brother speaking, but I highly doubt they'd worry about intoxication level in terms of ability to consent. Being shitfaced would be so second nature to them that there probably isn't any sober sex happening in all the dwarven kingdoms.

Going for some bullshit with Fisk and Sifting or Populist Rally after Investment Seminars. I've got Exclusive Party + Comet jank in there which can leave. The issue is early aggression and setting up before getting the soft lock.

I played it against a deck that plays Netrunner and I decided the Corp after they got to 6 points. Jinteki made me wait until I got central breaker suite to start pressure. Dunno how I feel about horizontal decks. Dunno how I feel about suite. Economy feels like it takes too long until I land a cheap Siphon. I also had to go tag me even with fairly important resources on the board.

My players are going up against this guy tomorrow: but I'm not sure how to handle the battle. Dragons are extremely intelligent creatures. What kind of things would a dragon do in battle that regular goblins and whatnot would not?
24 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>47615543
First. It can fly. Abuse breath weapon, do not engage in melee.

Second. It can plan. It won't engage in battle unless it thinks it can win. It should have a plan to win, and backup plans if the adventurers are too strong to beat.
>>
>>47615543
Use the terrain to their advantage in complex ways.

Be able to realize when it is losing the battle, meaning it is much more likely to know when it needs to run.

Prioritize targets by their threat level rather than size or proximity.

Lay traps for the party, especially complex ones designed specifically to capture a specific party member or mitigate a certain party advantage.

Basically, think, "How would a real-life person fight this party?"
>>
Just use your own strategic knowledge, goblins make stupid decisions about who to attack or where to move, dragons can plan 3 moves or more ahead. They can see the weak link from the look of their build and the armor they're wearing. You've played with the players before so you know their combat tendencies, a dragon would be able to accurately predict these too, he'd have an escape or back up plan if things went south

Any system with an "Investigation" skill handles it well.

When it comes to detective work in TTRPGs, it's almost entirely built around your ability to construct an interesting and challenging mystery and your players' ability to solve those mysteries without meta-gaming.

Mystery is totally possible in any RPG. You just need the right players.

The only part the system plays is helping you incorporate pertinent thematic elements into the game. For example, you probably wouldn't use Worlds of Darkness for your Bladerunner-style cybernoir game.

Probably.

Here's an article with a bunch of good tips on how to do this:

http://mythcreants.com/blog/five-tips-for-running-a-mystery-game/

Hey /tg/, I want to start a BBEG thread - in particular, to get your opinion on a BBEG I'm brewing up for a homebrew fantasy campaign.

He was a simple blacksmith, corrupted by an external power (I'm thinking an artifact which made him supernaturally brilliant at smithing and artifice, but eventually drove him to madness).
He seeks the hottest flame, and to get it he's going to rend the dimension he's in to access an infernal plane otherwise accessible and occupied only by demons and firey creatures (think of a map of the world, and then drawing a slightly squiggly line down the middle, cutting along it, and pulling it apart like curtains to reveal another map underneath. That's what's going to happen.).

To do this, he needs to gather some thaumatic artifacts and secure specific points of power across the world. To this end, he's created his army, which will be the primary antagonists to the party - a variety of constructs, usually made out of bronze but varying greatly. They'll roll the world until he can split the realm, and if he does that then there'll be a major crisis for the party to deal with.

How's that sound?

I also want more construct ideas - golems and warforged and whatever. The goblin equivalent in his army is going to be the Slicer Construct, which looks like some sort of bronze, skeletal bird-like creature, razor-sharp and capable of folding down into something that looks like Swiss army knife that's about the size of a Pringles tube, good for infiltration in shipments to settlements they plan to raid.

What do you think? Can I do better?

Pic related.

what setting? 3.5/páthfinder? 4th edition? 5th edition?

there are some construct/golem-like monsters in the Iron Kingdoms Monster Manual 1 and 2

there is also like 3 golems in each 3.5 monster manual from 1 to 5, also check the draconomicon for dragon golems
>>
>>47614335
alternatively you can turn anything into a construct by adding a "golem" template and you will have whatever you want as minions for your bbeg

Entirely homebrew. Setting's homebrew, elements unashamedly stolen from other things or thought up of own accord. System's homebrew, also a Frankenstein's monster of bits and pieces I found neat about other things.

I'll look up those books for ideas. Thanks much.

So far, I've got...

- Slicer: As described.
- Soldier: Clockwork humanoid, zombie parallel.
- Wolf: Primarily glorified alarm systems, but also good for harassing party in packs.
- Berserker: Steam-powered spinning monstrosity with an erratic number of weapon-mounted arms/
- Heavy: Lumbering siege breakers.
- Harrier: Bird-like construct for aerial assaults.

And the bosses...
- Burning: flaming ifritii demon style construct; a clever party can notice and act on its fuel supplies
- Tengu: Big, agile flying bird-man construct with a sword and a temper.
- Hydra: You can guess what this is. It'll even start constructing extra heads if given too much breathing room.
- Soldier (Prototype): Essentially an intelligent enemy Warforged PC with several levels on the party.

I'm thinking about more traditional golems, but I'm seeing how far I can get with metal and steam etc. first.

Xerxes' journal, at least 16 years past its being written with the hopes of immediate discovery, has put hope back in the hearts of the Imperials, Rene's group especially. Putting it in Kris' hands for safekeeping, what with her having the Witch Pendant, Rene and the rest feel a far stronger motivation to survive this upcoming battle and drive off the rebels. If they can just do that, they can begin looking into the mystery of these heirs, and who on earth could've taken the most vital pages.

Samson and his fleet have had to quickly get used to being bossed around by a brat who's brutal with a blade. His mind wanders more to just how hard he'll double-cross the Dories once it comes time that he's returned to his father, how he'll see to it that the new authorities of the land smoke them and their benefactors out as many times as it takes. Director Hera awaits the forces of the Holmstead Resistance, barely able to stay her axe as she and her army-nay, her friends, brothers, sisters-in-arms-prepare for an all-out assault on Briggid Island. This tropical island paradise's fate hangs in the balance of this one battle.

Dyrus and the rest, meanwhile, bid the Wolfskin region and Garou Valley, soon to be renamed, behind them, accompanied by an impressive horde of Tarvosian Nomadic warriors, more than have been gathered in one place in years. A few days' passage through a single mountain range is all that's keeping them from the final... Well, no, it won't be the final battle of their journey, with Central's situation having worsened despite General Taniel's hardest efforts, but it will be THE decisive moment of the war, of the years of secretive planning beforehand, of all the lives senselessly lost along the way...

Let's say the DAoT Humanity awoken from cryostasis sleep after Man of Iron Wars. Here’s some TLDR Lore.

Earth Resource Crisis/Second Cold War (M3) – Earth suffers a shortage of Natural Resources. Europe unites into a Continental Super Nation where China does the same uniting all of Asia. As well, the dispute of the resource consolidation between America, Europe, Asia and Russia results in the four powers undergoing a split between four alliances.

World War 3 (M3) – Tensions over controlling the last resources degenerates into all-out war with conventional and unconventional warfare with the usage of nuclear weapons resulting in a high death toll.

Unification of Earth and the Birth of the Federation (M3) – Realizing how much the world has almost been annihilated with nuclear weapons, the Superpowers force a treaty and unite to form the Federation and thus with the remaining resources, they decide to use it for space colonization to find new resources.

Colonization of the Solar System (M3 – M10) – Mars is colonized as well as various planets of the solar system. Colonization leads to the creation of terraforming technologies, thus Mars becomes a first planet to be terraformed resulting in the planet becoming fertile and breathable.

Age of Extragalatical Colonialism (M10 – M25) – Humanity begins to expand further into the outer galaxy and the human population begins a mass migration to the new colonies to deal with the overcrowding of colonies back on the solar system.

Age of Advanced Technological Innovation (M15 – M25) – During this time, humanity spends its efforts and research creating new technologies. This leads to the creation of technology capable of reconstructive regeneration of the body along with technology capable of prolonging human life. This also leads to the development of destructive weapons such as Volkite Weapons, Baneblades and much more. Thus leading to massive human decadence with the dependency on machines.
21 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Lore Part 2

Alien First Contact (M22) – Humanity makes first contact with the Orks and the Eldar, where as a result of meeting leads to all-out war.

Era of Colonial Uprisings and the Synth Rebellion(M25) – Humanity having become dependent on android synthetics for menial labour and military, this leads to corruption from an entity called the (Classified) resulting in the synths turning on Humanity. The same goes for the rise of Anti-Federation Sentiment with Civil Wars due to the ideas of Sectorial Nationalism and Regionalism demanding independence for planets, systems and sectors. The Rebellions combined results in 3/4 of the Human population killed off on a span of 250 years.

Failed Restoration and Second Rebellion (M25) – Having put down the colonial rebellions and synths, the Federation attempts to restore all its colonies, but colonies still unsatisfied commence a second rebellion resulting in a failure of the restoration. Thus 90% of the entire remaining human population began rebelling for the second time (Said rebels are remnants of Rebel Groups, opportunists taking advantage of the understaffed Federation, Military/Law-Enforcement personnel who have rebelled or deserted and took matters into their own hands with the weakened Federation government or people who are pissed at the Federation for stuff that happened in the Synth Rebellion) where the remaining 10% of humanity maintain loyalty to the Federation.
>>
TLDR Lore Part 3

The Great Exodus (M25 – M26) – Losing all control of their colonies, the Federation plan an exodus by settling on new worlds until the situation boils over. The remaining loyal 10% of the entire human population have the privilege of migrating and settling on various planets far from former territories, which to explain again, this is due to the entire billion 10% of humanity being pro-federation by having maintained their oath and pledge of allegiance. However, the unlucky quadrillion 90% of the entire remaining human population who were entirely anti-federation and pro-secession are left to rot thinking they can thrive and form new regimes without the Federation. Humanity having completed the migration decide to wait for the situation to boil over through cryostasis slumber.
>>
Finally Part 3

Era of Slumber/Hibernation Period (M26 – M42) – Having succeeded in the exodus in colonizing uninhabited worlds with the entire remaining loyal 10% population (Billion estimated), all of the Federation are put to sleep with some loyal AIs left to maintain to guard the sleeping population. Meanwhile, there is the Fall of the Eldar where Hedonism results in the birth of the Chaos God Slaanesh consuming most of the Eldar souls and all Eldar worlds creating the Eye of Terror. Age of Strife is ensuing where without Federation authority, chaos reigns in all over the galaxy. The birth and rise of the Imperium of Man leading to the Great Crusades in the unification of all former Federation colonies. Thus in an irony, the remaining Anti-Federation 90% that had willingly stayed behind on the colonies end up rotting as a result of anarchy and badly planned authority, where at the same time eventually the Imperium annexes them. The Imperium however degenerates as a result of their leader’s death from a civil war, thus turning the Imperium into a Collectivized Religious Dictatorship where people worship their leader, which that is similar to how Orwell envisioned it in his classic old book dating 40th Millennia’s back called 1984 with the worship of Big Brother. Many events ensue leading to the rise of Chaos, Incursion of the Tyranid Swarm, awakening of the Necrons and the spread of the Tau.

Awakening and the Reclamation (M42 – Onwards) – With the timer set to awaken in the 42nd Millennia, various Federation Enclaves emerge from their frozen sleep and begin their protocol to reclaim all of the former colonies and Terra under the banner of the Federation. Thus First contact between the Imperium results in an all-out war where a new competitor joins the match in the events.
