Whooo Whoooo here comes the railroad.
Sometimes I feel im the only one who wants to be on a railroad. I really want a tightly compact game with an interesting story.
I been in lots of games where the world is open and you can go anywhere and do anything.
But the older I get the more I want to just get in a get on with it. I want set pieces , I want three henchman that stand in the way before the fight with the boss.
I want 4 gems of light that are in themed dungeons .
I want to be able to do anything I want along the way but I want a set end goal
>>55408031
You either GM the game you want to play in
Or play in games you couldn't possibly want

Heya, /tg/. So i'm generally on board with the school of thought that says don't track food unless it's relevant to the narrative as a result of scarcity or some other form of danger. But i've seen some systems over the years that try to incorporate food positively rather than negatively, that is to say giving bonuses for making a point to get good food and rest rather than just using penalties for their absence. I really like that idea as a concept, but I'm having a hard time thinking of ways to implement it in a system like 5e where bonuses are so broad. The only ideas I have thought of so far are some sort of second wind-like healing, or small specific bonuses on saves. Anyone have any other ideas or other different ways of implementing food and rest into your games?

I'm looking at starting a 40k army. I have a budget, to start, of about $300. A friend said I shouldn't even bother to build an army unless i have at least $500 to blow. How true is this? I was thinking the mechanicus dudes since they have a new book coming out.
Not true at all, 8th allows for small points games
>>55407365
But does anybody actually play those sizes?
That's more then good to start. Expect to spend more in the future, but $300 is a good chunk. Just try to stretch those dollars by finding deals, LGS might give a 10%+ discount etc. And GW's start collecting boxes give a good discount on their content, as long as those mini's are useful to your army.
No idea if Ad Mech is a good starter army, but their damn cool mini's. Just don't blow your $300 wad in one go. I'd say get maybe 1-2 start collecting boxes, assemble/paint, and try some small games 1st. If you get into the habbit of buying too much 1st, you'll end up with a closet full of unbuilt boxes.
Is there any possibility that the omnissiah is a Warp god?

Is the Emperor a warp god, because if so, then yes.
Or at least one Omnissiah is.
What stopped you from quitting TTRPGs TG?
I'm finally at the point where it just doesn't matter now, I've been part or at least 18 campaigns only 3 of which actually finished, and were pretty lack luster generic fantasy.
With all the characters you make that just get shelved and all the ruined experiences why do you keep playing?
Sounds like a (you) problem. All of my campaigns have finished, and I enjoy playing with my friends.
>>55407087
So while >>55407266 has a point, and you may be depressive or something, or maybe your attitude is changing and you need to find a new hobby, it could also be that other factors in your life are making it harder to enjoy your gaming. I find that one big issue is when you work a lot or have a family; what little gaming time you have suddenly becomes more important, and your demand for quality goes up, and may go beyond what your friends are capable of, and even beyond what's acceptable to expect from a game in the first place. You have so little free time that you want what you do have to be worthwhile, so things you used to casually enjoy when you had time to spare have to step up or step out and make way for more concentrated enjoyment. Honestly it sucks when this happens because nobody is at fault really. It's just a shitty situation.
>>55407087
>What stopped you from quitting TTRPGs TG?
fun>game.
I realised the actual game/campaign wasn't as important as having a great group that takes shit less seriously and just has fun without needing everything to be super-serious.
Howdy folks!
After posting my WIP mechanics for Wild Cards: Sons of the Gun earlier this week, I managed to get a quick playtest in with some friends of mine. It was only three people, but I got a decent bit of feedback from them, which was implemented.
The primary concern from the players was that the game played too much like "War." That was originally the plan, but I wanted to address the complaint and added some basic rules - namely the playing of the first card from the Dealer and each 'Slinger face down, which adds some mystery and the ability to bluff, making the game a little more social.
Other than that, they enjoyed the fairly fast pace of the game, although my own organizational skills left something to be desired. But that's on me, not necessarily the mechanics.
As the Dealer I noticed that I was outgunned by my 'Slingers. My piles were generated by complete randomness and happenstance, while the 'Slingers got some strategy. They could play more cards and pick their cards while I was left with whatever my deck saw fit to spit up. To change this up, I've decided that the Dealer will play one Pile, and each 'Slinger will have to defeat that Pile's "Challenge Value" (the sum total of all cards in the Dealer's play pile) on their own to pass the Challenge. If one 'Slinger passes and the others fail, well that's unfortunate for them.
>cont'd
>>55406782
I also added rules for the Dealer to decide on the difficulty of the Challenge, which can result in him being allowed to start with and play more cards, depending on how tough it's supposed to be.
Tricks were finally written out, with the suggestion from a friend to base them off of Poker hands and generally try to keep them active (rather than passive benefits) to add a level of tactical play to the game, which should satisfy the player who found the "War" playstyle a little lacking.
The Cards originally had four abilities, one for Jack, Queen, King, and Ace, with the JQK abilities basically being scaled up versions of one another (J < Q < K) and the Ace being unique. That's been simplified to JQK sharing the same ability, since their probabilities of showing up are equal, and the Ace ability being unique to each Card.
Anyway, I'm planning on running a second test with the updated rules next week, but I was hoping to get some feedback from /tg/ beforehand. Also WildCards General I suppose. With more brains, maybe we can get this game finished.
Next big project is gonna be finishing up the Cards.
Why not give the dealer a hand? Can't be fun as the dealer to just constantly top deck the whole game.
Could consider giving the dealer a few abilities like the slingers get.
>>55406898
That's definitely a possibility. Originally the idea was to keep the Dealer mechanically impartial so he can focus on directing the story, but that doesn't seem all that necessary.
Maybe I'll have the Dealer draw cards each Play equal to the number of 'Slinger's plus one, so that way the longer the Challenge goes on, the more options the Dealer has, forcing the 'Slingers to try to snatch fast wins or get overwhelmed.
The Dealer does get abilities with the Jack, Queen, King, Ace, and Joker, which were added after the play test.
>Jack: Each 'Slinger discards a card from their hand.
>Queen: Each 'Slinger skips their next Reload.
>King: The Dealer removes the lowest Ranking Card from each 'Slinger's Pile.
>Ace: Dealer gets an extra Play.
>Joker: The Dealer can discard one 'Slinger's Pile, effectively forcing them to restart.
I understand that alignment should be an approximation to a character's general outlook on morality and that it's actually a mechanical tool rather than a ploy to destroy any and all aspects of roleplaying, but I still think it fucking sucks.
Are there games where their version of alignment was done better, in a way that DOESN'T let anyone think that they're supposed to be an unbreakable code of ethics for a character, but still holds mechanical value?
I know I can just ignore alignment altogether if I wanted to, but that's not the point of this thread.
>Are there games where their version of alignment was done better, in a way that DOESN'T let anyone think that they're supposed to be an unbreakable code of ethics for a character, but still holds mechanical value?
Yes.
Any game without alignment.
>>55406155
>Are there games where their version of alignment was done better, in a way that DOESN'T let anyone think that they're supposed to be an unbreakable code of ethics for a character, but still holds mechanical value?
Literally D&D default alignment mechanics.
The interpretation you're using is the problem here, not the mechanics. So changing mechanics isn't going to solve your problem.
>>55406183
>hurr I can't read
>>55406217
probably, I've honestly been playing with alignments with different definitions on the background for so long that I can't even remember what they're supposed to accomplish in the first place
>The two main gods are the creator of the world and a gnostic-like god from beyond this cosmos offering liberation from this universe he claims is a prison
>Neither are evil or even really wrong
Could it works? How would make both religions feel different, opposed yet not evil?
>>55406077
What isn't evil about Cthulhu coming from out of space and telling humans to kill themselves so they can stop having to be physical? That's not religion, that's widespread clinical depression.
>>55406077
Kinda what >>55406106 said. The alien god is described as being so far removed from our reality as to be largely irrelevant for day to day life, unless you're crazy enough to try to liberate yourself from your mortal coil to join him. Why would a farmer or similar regular person care about such a deity, beyond "kids these days and their elder gods"?
>>55406077
It could work in a metaphysical sense.
The monomyth is an idea offered to explain why the human angst exists. The idea is passed down by Creator (who is brother to mankind, mind you) and reinterpreted by man into the myriad cultures.
A proposed gnostic Outsider would then be offering a competing monomyth and be seditious as shit.
Of course then you'd have humans interpreting the Outsider as being the original and that the "Creator" is a pretender.
Really your system isn't much different from the current lines of gnostic thought. The only difference I can tell is there's this vague implication that your deities are at least partially manifest-able into singular, distinct forms.

Sup /tg/. So, I get to DM a one shot tomorrow, and this one is special. My, formerly super religious, mom is going to be playing at the table.
Now, since this is the woman who got me into Boston, Styx, and others of that ilk, I thought it would be fun to run a Prog/Rock Opera style game. "The Wizard of Greysky Tower has stolen the Melody of Joy from the Bards of the land." sort of thing.
Any grognards or youngnards have ideas/suggestions that would really make it sparkle?
System is 5th ed. At least one character will be a walking anachronism set on disrupting the plot (he's not That Guy, it's just how he rolls).
Go watch pick of destiny again and do that.

Here's the thing: it doesn't have to be a romantic epic/messianic story/archetypal myth, because there are other structures of story everyone is familiar with thanks to tv and popular novels. So...why not a murder mystery?
Everyone has seen Colombo or CSI or read a Agatha Christie novel or seen one of the movie adaptations. You can set it during an Immigrant Song style Lief Erikson visitation of Vikings to the New World, with the mysticism/Faerie stuff of Come Sail Away.

You made me think of Tenacious D's "Wonderboy" for the first time in years. It's golden inspiration, thank you.
It is the 23rd Century. Humanity is divided between two rival governments each claiming the status of "Earth Government", with rogue states precariously perched between them.
The first Earth Government is based in Indonesia, based upon hierarchy and the idea that superior talents in science and warfare should be given absolute authority and unleashed upon seemingly impossible tasks, like Napoleon or Andrew Jackson.
The second is based in Nigeria, built upon the principles of devolution and cultural autonomy. Like the Persian Empire of old, its armies let each vassal state contribute their own specialized units with their unique expertise to build an alltogether well-rounded army.
The largest of the rogue states is Gorkaniya, the result of the Pakistani exodus from their drought and flood plagued home upward into Central Asia and Northern India.
