There will be an option for my players to overthrow the ethically questionable leader of a town. It is governed through a meritocracy, where at any point a challenger can overthrow the current mayor by winning in both a challenge of combat and intelligence.
Is there an interesting way to pit a player against the current NPC mayor in a battle of wits that isn't "Roll to see if your a smart boy"?

One way would be to challenge the player to a legit game you're good at--like chess or whatever. Alternatively, fuse the combat/wit elements together somehow (like those boxing/chess matches?), or use one end to support the other (like a Last Crusade-style lottery of weapons/armour with deceptive appearances, and you choose which to go into battle with).

Are you expecting foul play? Is cheating/fudging/favouritism/poisoning a possible outcome?
>>
>>48182643
Considering that it would be a single player at a time vying for the position, I think that taking a player out of session to play chess would be a little disruptive, though I guess I could just say that we'd play after the session was done and take it from there.
I like the idea of fusing them together the most. If you can think of a way to introduce a test of intelligence or tactics into arena combat, I'm open to it.

If they bring up any form of deception or bluffing, I'd have them make a check for it. It's totally reasonable to think that anyone could try to game the meritocracy to win, and would be rewarded accordingly if they were good enough at it.

5e is such shit. Why are you playing it when Dungeon World is so much better and available for free? Oh that's right, there is no good reason, except "w-w-well it's popular"

Shit reason desu, give Dungeon World a try and you'll see how much DnD has been holding you back.

So, in a few months I'll be starting a realistic medieval campaign (no magic, no superpowers, no monsters, definitely no ASOIAF) set in late XIII century not!England.
(Inb4 you can't do it, yes I can, my players are cool with it and I know their limits enough to make them enjoy the setting.)

I have pretty much everything figured out, except for the system.
I had in mind to pick an existing one and modding it until it's fairly reasonable, but it seems there's no realistic medieval game system out there.
What would you suggest? No GURPS plox.

A thread dedicated to discussion and feedback of games and homebrews made by /tg/ regarding anything from minor elements to entire systems, as well as inviting people to playtest your games online. While the thread's main focus is mechanics, you're always welcome to share tidbits about your setting.

Try to keep discussion as civilized as possible, avoid non-constructive criticism, and try not to drop your entire PDF unless you're asking for specifics, it's near completion or you're asked to.

thoughts of ways to add skill to a table top game?

Theirs turn timers, games like darts use the physical skill of throwing....

Eventually dice seem like a very base way to add variance to a game, but what about a game where the end is clear and skill determines, or at least gives you better odds, at your goal..

Like who rolls 3 sixes first is not a good way to measure skill.
>>
>>48182279
Well, you can consider some games to be a skill competition of combo building, max-min-ing and rule lawering...even so, it doesn't make those games any better....

And there is also dungeon fighter where you have to put your throwing dice in weird ways with precision up to test.

I'd really like to see a system that incorporates Go as a resolution mechanic. An rpg that rewards strategy more so than luck.

Can bards use magic items as a bardic focus? Specifically the Pipes of Haunting.
11 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
What, exactly, is a "bardic focus"?
>>
>>48180478
Spellcasting focus for bards, you know what I meant.
>>
But yeah In the SRD it says any instrument a bard is proficient in they can use as a focus, and my bard is proficient in wind instruments.

But I'm wondering if playing the pipes automatically casts the fear spell or if the bard has to activate the item. If the bard can play the pipes without casting the fear spell, could he use it to cast other spells of his own?

This is important to me since my bard's side instrument was lost and his main instrument is a bit unwieldy, so having access to a spellcasting focus while in a tight spot could make or break a future encounter.

It depends on the changes you want to make. I am all for tweaking a system to better suit your play style, but there are some changes that are going to make things much worse or unbalanced as fuck. The latter point there is especially likely when it comes to make custom races or content for your own use. Few people custom make a race just so they can play something weaker than what is normally available, as opposed to giving it free shadow powers or fire immunity or something.
>>
>>48180060
Honestly, do whatever the fuck you want.

Is your particular kind of fun badwrongfun? Of course.
Does it matter? No.

I give zero fucks how other people do things, and shoving standards into others' throats isn't something I consider a good use of time.

Listening to others' advice and taking it in account? Sure.
Actually doing things according to multiple, often contradictory, advice? No thanks.
>>
>>48180124
We were just going to fuckaround mostly, since noone of us had played this before, we just wanted to have fun in our own way.

When I mean about "first session" is not about GM a game for a new group. It's about to create a stunning beginning to your game in a form that would impress even your old players.

The primal answer is: When beginning a campaign, what'd you do to make the history appealing in the very first session?

Media res opening perhaps?
>>
>>48179790

You use this, or something similar. Beyond The Wall has a really slick way of making the world with the players and getting everyone into it. Characters start by building their village, basing their histories off each other. Even if you're not using that system or fantasy, its worth looking at.

Helps to have opening discussions about tones and themes everyone wants to work with so you don't have too much clashing aesthetics.
>>
>>48179790
Paraphrasing Hitchcock, it should start with an earthquake and be followed by rising tension.

It doesn't have to be mystery or intrigue or murder, it works for any story. Give your players at least one 'wow' moment, then let them explore for a bit, adding new threads and elements constantly. Hopefully this will lead the story to a satisfying climax in later sessions.

Find lists of babynames, preferably from a country that fits the setting and character. Sometimes I'll take a name straight from the list, sometimes I'll combine parts of multiple names, sometimes I'll create an original name inspired på something from the list.

So which system would you recommend for someone who wants a game with a Final Fantasy Tactics/Tactics Ogre feeling to it? Could be one that does the political stuff right, or the tactical combat stuff right, or whatever you think fits a setting like it.
12 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
D&D 4e or Strike! would work for something with a tactical combat focus. Fuck, Savage Worlds does tactical combat extremely well too, if you don't mind it being a bit more low-key and lethal.
>>
>>48178578
Those figures creep me out. Why do they have such weak cores and so powerful limbs?
>>
>>48178631
I didn't know about Strike! I've been looking into Savage Worlds and it seems really nice for tactical combat, so I may well go with that. Thanks for the recommendation.

>>48178736
I don't know why they chose to make the characters that way, it's pretty odd indeed.
