So I'm running a game where one of the PCs is a vampire whose parents disappeared, and wants to find them, as their main concern. They're just a normal villager hanging around town otherwise (the vampirism is genetic, it's not some evil Dracula stuff).
Since this is a level 1 PC, what are some story ideas I could use to get the PC involved in the game? Maybe some way to leave town and adventure, or interesting things in town to do. Right now the player feels a bit bored since I haven't introduced anything to make it urgent to act yet; I thought they'd be happy just getting to know the town during the beginning of the game, but they want some more purpose.

Maybe have them work for an NPC, who has info about the character's parents. Of course they should expect them to do something for the info, which in this case would be doing whatever your adventure is.
Do they have a home? Family friends? They could acquire a diary that belonged to one of their parents. But do things that make it so they just can't read it outright. Make it locked, and/or written in another language the PC (or someone in the party) doesn't speak.
>>48315505
They're basically an orphan who lives at the edge of town in their abandoned house. The PC has a special Vampire trait where anyplace they take up residence, takes on a gloomy atmosphere. Not supernaturally so, but like, imagine a haunted looking house. The place has peeling floorboards, mists, spiderwebs, etc. So most people don't go there.
But otherwise the town doesn't know about the vampirism so they just assume she's just an odd but well meaning kid who comes down to town to get supplies every so often.
No friends yet; I was relying on actual play to establish that, but that's going too slow it seems. Might have to start bringing some in from the backstory, like they were always friends but hadn't been introduced yet.
Incidentally, this is a 1 on 1 game for fun online, so there are no other party members. That changes the way I have to run the game a bit.

Oh but those two ideas, the diary and language are good.
I was thinking about making my next Pathfinder Villian basically Sadam Hussein. Any tips on how to treat players as if they where in a totalitarian police state?
>>48315435
Set the game in a totalitarian police state.
>>48315435
Read 1984 or Fahrenheit 451.
>>48315435
Watch a movie about police states or read about them. Tony Manero is a good film.
A couple of tips
>Military Police are always on the street
>Protests are met with brutal beatings and live ammo
>Curfews are strict, patrols are on the lookout for anyone not obeying them.
>People disappear, the police may enter your house and take someone and you might never see them again.
>Guerrilla radios.

>>48314863
Not in the least. There's a lot they could dredge up for influence. Lovecraft isn't the end-all-be-all of fiction from which to borrow influence.
>>48314863
Given that we've seen three completely new worlds since they introduced the Eldrazi, as well as hints of three more in Origins, no, no they are not.

Non-traditional power sets
Let's brainstorm some not-so-common superpowers that aren't gimmicky to the point of uselessness.
Ideas:
>Ability to cause brain damage and temporarily boost mental capabilities while doing so.
>Exchwnge the positions of any two objects if they are similar enough in mass/volume.
>Meld into the terrain and create projections made out of that terrain's material that can fight for you.
>Ability to have touched objects shoot off at the speed of a bullet, regardless of size of object.
>Ability to create "super" chemicals inside your body and shoot them out of your fingers.
>Ability to see and hear through any human's senses within a mile.
>herbakinesis

Been reading Worm lately, I take it?
>>48314605
All but those last two are powers characters in Worm have.
>Ability to cause brain damage and temporarily boost mental capabilities while doing so.
Ingenue
>Exchwnge the positions of any two objects if they are similar enough in mass/volume.
Trickster
>Meld into the terrain and create projections made out of that terrain's material that can fight for you.
Both Golem and Night Hag
>Ability to have touched objects shoot off at the speed of a bullet, regardless of size of object.
Ballistic
>Ability to create "super" chemicals inside your body and shoot them out of your fingers.

Anyone else on /tg/ insist on using the classic-style cards over the more modern (8th Edition+) sets? Granted, some cards found in 7th Edition and earlier haven't been reprinted in modern editions, and some of these cards are still very usable in modern play.
Maybe it has more to do with nostalgia than anything else. I was a teenager when the very first MtG sets ever came out, so the retro format feels a lot more natural to me than this newfangled shit with rounded boxes and dozens of nondescript keywords.
>>48313879
For sure. Anything that had the old frame on it, I use the version with the old frame. The new shit may be "better designed", but it lost its soul somewhere along the line.
Name one "nondescript keyword"
Also the modern border is objectively better looking, however, the m15 border is objectively a bad change from the original modern border
The only reason to prefer the old border is nostalgia and/or you're associating the great art and great card design you remember with the old border
A lot of the old art is great and I'm not a fan of the new, homogenized art
The card border is objectively better though
>>48313879
I got some old cards from my dead dad so I try to use them whenever I have a deck they might fit into.
He never played the game, just collected some for the sweet card art. Same reason I originally got into MtG was just for the art. In middle and high school I actually started playing the game.
Whats a good tool for creating cards for use in a game? I have a game I wanna make up but I'm not sure if a good system exists for making cards or if I'll have to bullshit it myself with image editing and custom formatting.

It all falls to charisma.
Same way if the characters are low CHA nerds.
In a setting where the party is a band of murderhobos? The guard would have to be someone too valuable to the players to kill outright, and maybe too fragile to initiate combat with without killing them.
So they either have to talk it out or damn the consequences.
I made this a while ago and it's just been sitting around since then. Do with it as you will.
I find this pretty funny.

Brand new to malifaux but not to gaming war gaming.
I have literally loved every bit of fluff I have read and many of the characters and factions have interesting backstories.
Reminds me a lot of a game of mordheim.
Why is this game not more popular? especially on /tg/ ?
>>48311792
It was big at the end of 1st edition. The game itself was unwieldy with some confusing mechanics and needed to be cleaned up so 2nd edition was conceived (I was involved with playtesting at one point).
The decision to prioritise the release of new models/factions over updating older ones (ruleswise, not updating models as they were fine albeit metal) was what the main reason it died a death: the Stitched Together were the reason I started the game and with no outline of a time for an updated ruleset for them I wasn't waiting around indefinitely. It appears to be something echoed in other gaming groups and it fizzled out as people drifted to games with models they *could* use.
I sold up and took up Warmachine and haven't looked back nad though the models are nowhere near as nice, I can play with the ones I want to (even if they were nerfed in the new edition).
>>48312179
makes sense. the game has exploded at my flgs though, picks up a new player about every week too. have you played a game since they released those stiched rules?
>>48312179
They definitely shot themselves in the foot when they delayed being able to play some of the most popular masters for about a year.
I personally haven't loved the new directions the games been heading (visually/ruleswise). I do however still love the games core mechanics and hate how I basically will never find a ripoff game with them.
