Hey /tg/. So today my DM booted me from the game because I refused to change my character's appearance to fit his preferences, partially because we were already multiple sessions in and the character's appearance was already established and also because I just really don't like what he wanted.

So I ask you, what stupid bullshit that probably shouldn't have have been that big of a deal has spoiled your games or torn apart your groups?

People will not let others in their games because they're; a different colour, a different religion, use characters that they dislike the general theme, concept and idea of, play in a way that they don't like.

There are people on this board that will argue some, or all of those are valid, life goes on, people have their peeves and think everyone else's are bullshit over theirs.

That being said, I once had a GM almost flip out over a few of the male players playing female PCs, it didn't quite destroy the game itself but it led to a lot of conflict that just had the whole thing dissolve away. Thing is, until you encounter these sorts of things, the usually seem relatively normal.

What was a simple fishing trip on the Yangzhte for lunch got a lot more complicated after a dead body washed up onshore, apparently belonging to a member of the prestigious local Xi Clan.
You originally thought that it was perhaps none of your business, but a bunch of masked thugs trying to pin the corpse's murder on you for reasons unknown (but likely to do with the murderer's real identity) seemed determined to MAKE it your business weather you wanted to or not.
After a brief scuffle ending in one of them managing to retreat, a strange swordsman who had observed the fight stood up and introduced himself as "Inspector Lin" and said he was an Imperial something-or-other.

Stupid sloppy editing on first post.

This Inspector Lin is a tallish, willowy sort of man, but his shoulders are broad and strong-looking, so you guess he can swing that sword around well enough.
His clothes are a simple black outfit and white pants over leather boots, and his wide straw hat shadows his face but for dark hair and glinting, intelligent eyes.

"I'd like to ask you a few questions about a body you supposedly found just now," he says cooly, apparently undaunted but your earlier proclamation of identity and unimpressed by your martial skills.

What are some of the most horrific things your characters or party have encountered, /tg/? I'll start off with my barbarian getting swarmed by a shitload of undead babies, commanded by a psychotic necromancer who wanted to make "More Children" out of him. Not with him, out of him.

The party was a collection of civil servants sent to investigate this derelict house on the west bank of the river. Upon entering we found each room contained dozens of large sacks stitched together from burlap, leather, fur; whatever was available it seemed. Most of the were suspended from the ceiling, with a few tied up to holes in the walls.

Each bag was stained with blood, puke, and urine. A lot of the burlap was festering with moss and rot. We decided to cut open one of the bags to see what was inside. A mixture of rotting sewage, blood, filled with fly maggots and eggs came pouring out. It was the temperature of mud on a cool autumn morning. Mosquitoes and horseflies came swarming out as well. We used our torches to push most of them away.

After everyone had calmed down one of us heard something shift inside the bag. We cut it down and peeled the sack back, revealing a tangled mass of lacerated flesh. They were children, between the ages of eleven to fourteen, tied together into a large clump with string and hemp rope. Several were still alive, their eyes searching the room in blind terror. They were covered in signs of torture, open sores and knife marks, burns and bruises. Some had even had what looked like animal teeth and nails shoved into their skin and eyes and ears.

One, a girl about the age of twelve, was actively eating the necrotic limb of another child.

We opted to just set the whole clump on fire and get the fuck out of the house.

It didn't work out that way.

Yugioh is such a fucked up autistic game. The rules are impossible, there's been decades of extreme power creep, and the rules text on many cards is longer than Infinite Jest.

Yet there is something magical about the game. Games are often determined in a flash, like a knife fight. But there's also ridiculous combos that let us summon huge super powerful dragons and robots with gratuitous and epic weeb art. There is no set rotation. That means you can always find a secret tech to catch your opponent off guard. And Konami will often release a handful of cards to help out an old deck archetype like they have done recently with Crystal Beasts and Destiny Heroes.

So maybe MTG is more well designed with its focus groups and huge hierarchies of researchers and developers. Maybe Yugioh is fundamentally flawed. But Yugioh has a soul and style that will never be matched. And that's why we keep coming back.

Personally, I find the whole pages-of-rules on cards and the lack of rotation are pretty much death for accessibility. If you want to learn the game, then you have to wrap your head around a staggering amount of cards with very niche effects and synergies, not helped by the general predisposition to the Old Vanguard school of cards which only work in a very narrow niche. Archetypes help to remedy this, but even then there's a staggering amount of support and staple cards to consider in a limited deck space, not to mention the Extra Deck's myriad contents.

I think it does come from me not having played since original Gladiator Beasts were meta, but right now I don't even know how to begin to play the game and frankly it feels like to produce a constructed-ready deck you need to do weeks of reading and testing to grasp the function of the game.

That said: I do agree that Yu-Gi-Oh has a certain charm to it. Text in 1.5 point, arbitrary thousands and knife-fight gameplay aside, I remember having tremendous fun tagging in and tagging out a Gaoidiaz into a Hoplomus.

>But Yugioh has a soul and style that will never be matched
Season Zero is the actual Yugioh though. The Yugioh that everyone knows was literally made as a cashgrab from day one. An extremely effective cash grab, but a cash grab none the less. In my opinion the game does not have a soul, because they do things like release intentionally broken cards to help a set sell. Pic not related but what comes to mind most is something like Soul Charge.

How did the 2e-D&D-onwards paradigm of polytheistic gods ALWAYS being über-powerful cosmic overlords come about? There is no mythological basis at all for greater gods being able to reshape vast swaths of reality with a mere thought, let alone minor gods doing the same.

Even the likes of Odin and Thor had to travel around physically, hunt for food, and cook that food. Transforming into a bird is considered impressive for a god, and teleporting willy-nilly and with few restrictions is very rare. Yes, they can perform truly godlike feats like reshaping mountain ranges or raising continents, but that tends to be the result of "deific plot magic" in the climax of a long and arduous work-project or quest, not something any god can do on the fly.

So why is it that from 2e onwards, polytheistic gods suddenly became these cosmic, reality-reshaping juggernauts that made high-level wizards look like chumps? Even the avatars of the gods in 2e and 3.X can wipe the floor with a high-level optimized party. 4e gods are level 34 solos at minimum. Nothing but some vague notion of "deific warfare MAD" is stopping them from reshaping the multiverse like putty on a whim.

Is it because of people conflating a god's "divine plot magic at the end of a great work-project/quest" with their on-the-fly abilities while adventuring out in the field?

Is it because AD&D 2e wanted to move away from "gods are just strong monsters who can be killed," so as to placate the moral guardians of the time?

Is it because of the 2e-onwards paradigm of "there always has to be something stronger than the PCs who can keep them in line," which is why avatars can curbstomp any party?

Is it because the capacities of mid-level D&D characters are already on par with that of many mythological gods, so the actual gods in D&D had to be power-creeped to even greater cosmic power?

Is it because of preconceived notions of the nigh-omnipotent Abrahamic god leaking into these polytheistic gods' D&D interpretations?

Because writers don't want players trying to kill gods.
>>
>>48339151

This 1e book was expressly designed to let high-level parties go around godslaying.

It still vastly overshoots gods' abilities compared to their mythological versions, but their power level is much lower than the gods' 2e (no statistics, unbeatable) and 3.X (impossibly strong statistics and magic with Alter Reality) incarnations.

Is there any miniature games that aren't overly expensive and aren't trash that /tg/ would recommend?

Depends on what your definition of cheap is and how serious you want to get with it, but i'd say that the X-wing Miniature game is pretty good and not too expensive.

Historical war games are way cheaper since no one makes the officially licensed whermacht miniatures line. Doubly so if you use 1/72 scale plastic minis.

Fantasy Rules! is pretty great, Star Grunt is a sci-fi game that's free (as in beer), Full Thrust is an awesome spaceship combat game that might be harder to find but has a whole range of excellent miniatures for it, all of them very cheap.

I need system recommendations for a campaign based on Metal Gear Solid. More so the "Operators Operating Operationally" side than the "Nanomachines and Bisexual Vampires" side.

Note I don't want something that emulates the gameplay of the series so much as the feel of series: special forces units, international espionage, etc.

not really a fan of "all these are available to everyone" and Psionics plainly saying mind control/reading is possible
Unless "all of these" implies to the 0-3 options I picked, and not all the six options. If the latter, we're cool.

I will figuratively suck ya dick if you post Evil cyoa. I finally have time to read it all and write/imagine my plans.
>>
>>48337888

I choose none, because every single option would make the world a worse place than it already is, and gaining a "moderate aptitude" isn't enough to stoke my selfish desires.

I mean, who wants to be in the middle of the food chain in a world filled with mind controllers, for instance? Just enough talent to catch the attention of someone with much more than "moderate aptitude", thanks fucking bunches.
>>
>>48337888
Can someone explain to me why you would play a cyoa like this where everyone is potentially empowered and you only have "moderate aptitude"?

Not saying it's necessary to be the strongest but being average is a long, long shot from that. You could barely keep yourself safe in some of those settings.

Ask a guy who's been GMing for 30 years anything.

Character death likelihood over the course of 30 years. Were you too soft in the beginning? Did you get maximum lethality for a year or two?

I'm playing a halfling noble right now, and I'm struggling to come up with a motivation for why he wants to adventure. What I have right now is (I'll give a bit of backstory for clarification)
>Comes from a family of sorcerers who use their magic to subtly manipulate people, which is how they have so quickly risen up the social ladder
>Our halfling is second in line to be the head of the family
>He's currently adventuring to find more avenues of income/contacts for his family, and collecting a bit of treasure for his own prestige along the way.
But this feels a bit weak. Any suggestions /tg/?

Excellent.

Halflings, especially if they're noble and should be "living the life", have to be reluctant adventurers. Kinda anti-hero but with a brave heart.
It's cliché and it's what Martin Freeman did (pretty well I'd say considering the dire circumstances he was in) but it's great.
