I got invited to a serious DnD group for the first time, i've never played dnd before and they told me to make a character. The only thing i can come up with is a white guy trained in the arts of samurai who specializes in funny accents, mainly asian accents.

Send help, please.

That should work. If you play a martial, you're nothing more than comic relief anyway.
>>
If this is bait - good job, if not

Well you could just make something simple - an old guy farmer who went out to adventure just because he was bored and didn't want to see youngster die for no good reason
>>
>serious group
> Wants to play meme pc

you havn't even said what dnd it is.
point buy or array?
whats the group got?
what type of game is it?

talk to the gm. ask him all this stuff. ask him to help make you something.
If he wont help then it may be a shit group.
If he is too busy to help then look up builds online.
Or use hero lab, it makes building a pc easy.

What would magical traditions specialized in controlling and manipulating swarms of elementites be like, and how would they differ from "regular" elemental magic?

Perhaps a master of earth elementites could have them suffuse their body and harden in response to physical trauma, but would that be any different from conventional Barkskin/Ironskin spells?

The Codex Alera books are basically about this
>>
>>54776849
I figure it would mostly differ in that "spells" would have a degree of intelligence, and could be trained to better do their job. Like with your example, if you had the earth elementals reinforce you often enough they'd eventually learn what parts of you need the most strength and optimize the effect, maybe even learn to preempt the physical trauma and harden before the blow even lands.

I'm thinking about the way to create a ship in an RPG. I just want feed back on my train of thought.

Ships, at their heart, have a few core actions and parts. They need a Hull, a physical body so to speak. They need an engine, or some method of propulsion, from sails to slaves with oars to internal combustion. That lets them move. The need a hold, to carry things. They need a rudder, to steer themselves. If they are warships they need weapons to deal damage with, and armor to withstand damage. So that leaves me with the following breakdown:

Hull = HP
Engine = Speed
Hold = Inventory/carry capacity
Rudder = Movement or maneuvering
Weapons = Attack
Armor = Defense

Now, with those basic stats, we can start breaking down actual mechanics. One thing I've always been kind of weirded out by is the fact that large vehicles are often considered...living, in a way. Essentially, when your characters get on their ship, the game zooms out to just look at the ship and treat it like a singular character. The characters on the ship tend not to do much. There's very little connection between the actions the ship takes and the actions the characters take. So if pirates board the ship, either the zoomed out ship to ship combat vanishes in favor of on deck character combat, or the boarding is abstracted and the ship to ship combat continues.

To get away from that, I want to have positions of a sort. So, for the ship to maneuver, it needs someone at the helm. For it to continue to move at full pace, it needs someone working the engine. To shoot, it needs someone manning the guns. And if it gets boarded, the players will have the choice between abandoning their stations to fend off the boarders or continuing their jobs to try and sink the other vessel.

https://youtu.be/Ta2akHVbepo?t=11m41s This video of a Urealms campaign shows off exactly this. Cannons needed to be loaded and manned, the ship needed to be steered. It's a long video but you can see this throughout.
>>
>>54775189
I suggest looking at the rules in Rogue Trader. They are spaceships but the "ships of the line IN SPACE!" kind. Its rules have the PCs get involved in different aspects of ship combat and voyage.

A "hold" was historically measured in tuns, which is a barrel containing about 1.000 liters of water or 1.000 kilos.

You also could have a position of someone repairing the ship and/or making sure the crew does as ordered.

This album has mostly real ships images I collected.

>One thing I've always been kind of weirded out by is the fact that large vehicles are often considered...living, in a way.
You might have no idea how much this is true.

>They need an engine, or some method of propulsion, from sails to slaves with oars to internal combustion.
There are more options if you wish. The chinese had paddlewheel ships moved by their crew instead of oars.

This is gonna sound absolutely crazy but for whatever reason I have decided to put my DnD party into a wrestling ark by next week. However I need about 40 different wrestlers and after about 12 I ran into some major writing blockage.

Please help. Magic users are allowed and they can be any of the 5e races as well as some homebrewed ones if necessary!

Thank you in advance!

What's your favorite magic system and why?

>Hard mode; It's freeform

I really like the magic from through the breach. It's done in a cool way where you can build your own spells by adding or removing mods to get a variable difficultly to cast.
>>
>>54774930
On paper, Call of Cthulhu. You're not supposed to have many powers, nor use them terribly often, and the magic system is understood to carry incredible existential and metaphysical implications (even though I don't like the interpretation of those implications inherent to cosmic horror). That said, in actual gameplay, I'd probably go with the Savage Worlds power system, because it's a solid, mechanically versatile option that doesn't require quite the same kind of fussing that many other power systems do.

Not really sure. There are some great designs like Ramos, Taigam, GW Baracat Swordsmith, Mirri and the Wandering Knight, but nothing is really making me go "Yes."

This might sound autistic as fuck but I'm honestly hoping for Mardu Vampires to feature a Knight subtheme. I need an excuse to slot in my foil Haakon without jumping through fifty hoops.

Exactly nothing. Ramos is sweet, but I don't want him as his own deck, instead wanting him for my "5 Color Matters" deck where I can cast a Conflux and instantly use Ramos's effect to cast my commander (Progenitus).

What's the ideal tabletop ruleset and/or setting for a game where the PCs in the group are dramatically defined by a chosen unique gimmick that decides what they're doing in most given combats/scenarios.

Not just merely a class system, but things that deeply effect characteristics of the characters and make them wildly different.

Basically, I want a ruleset for playing anime miniboss squads.

do you think tabletop games are good for horror? As good as vidiya?

Have you ever played a horror tabletop game?

What kind of horror scares you the most? What kind is best for tabletop?
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>54771227
I dont think you can make a *scary* tabletop game without some really extensive prep work but then again, I'm a noob so I wouldnt be surprised if there is a way.
>>
>>54771227
Yes, they can be, but in a different way and they require a lot of prep work. It also has to be a system dedicated to horror (Call of Cthulhu for example). I've run a few games where I genuinely scared and unsettled my players, but it's usually pretty difficult.
>>
It works. Ran a lot of horror, usually with WoD mortals but anything not too complicated is fine. You absolutely need people who want to be scared, though. Also, I recommend groups of 2-4 people, and clear up limits beforehand.

>Be ominous
Not everything needs an explanation. Do not worry about the 'rules' of the supernatural. Let them know the source eventually, but not its means. Do not show the 'monster' for more than a tiny bit at once, or it will become a 'character' that the players will attempt to manipulate.
>Let them feel powerless
>Let them feel unsafe
>Do not show mercy
Hurt them. Cripple them. Physically or mentally. Do not make it impossible for them to act, though.
