What's the difference between mermaids and sirens?
64 posts and 15 images submitted.

Song.
>>
>>48680517
Usually the mermaid song is beautiful but nonmagical, while the siren's song is actually a magic charm effect. Also, sirens aren't necessarily aquatic; variations that resemble beautiful harpies exist, too.

Not much. Hell, in some languages, they use the same word for both. In English, however, mermaids tend to be the good guys and sirens tend to be the bad guys, since they're the ones who tend to lure people to their death. But it varies, they're like orcs and ogres in terms of similarities.

has anybody here legitimately ran a Palladium (or Rifts) game? I own the core rulebooks for both series and a few splats, but the rules seem so haphazardly laid out that actually running a game seems a tad difficult

The poor layout of the rules as well as the constantly reprinted typos and lack of clarification is probably what turns more people off of Palladium than anything else

I would check out this channel https://www.youtube.com/user/Maloquinn it features one of the writers for Palladium discussing the system interviewing artists and Uncle Kev himself and explaining the rules and going step by step through character creation
>>
This was actually the first fantasy genre RPG I ever ran/played. There's a lot of fun fluff/lore it, and some OK mechanics, but it can be horribly unbalanced, even if you're not trying. I do recommend giving it a try, because it has a different mechanic for just about everything, and it's quite different from many other RPGs.

I played it for about five years, and by the time my group and I were done with it, we had houseruled the shit out of it to make it more balanced and more symmetrical.

The book itself has issues with layout and organization, too.

Some changes that I would suggest to you:

Make all Weapon Proficiencies follow the same pattern.

Make all classes follow the same XP progression.

Introduce a Perception Skill and/or Stat.

One neat thing, though, is that there's a ton of homebrew material for Spells, Classes, and Skills, as well as mechanical fixes, all available online.

It's a very uneven system, but you can absolutely have fun with it.

Hey /tg/, so i just got done with my regular group session for the night. We run D&D 3.5 for ref. Our group has been together for almost 12 years and has completed countless campaigns together. My PC's current characters exceeded all expectations over the past two years and have successfully attained divinity and established a new pantheon after events led to evil gods killing most of the good ones and my PC's having to clean it up. Each of these characters had reached level 100 (using epic level rulebook of course). It was a long road and exhausting to create new adventures and stories for.
The players loved it, but want to continue with their current characters instead of starting all over with new ones. These characters' footsteps shake the earth as they walk over it, and yet my players still want more.

I have given thought to adjusting them into a new system if necessary, but we honestly have never played anything else other than D&D and Pathfinder.

https://app.roll20.net/forum/permalink/3758037/

Are all character creation threads for Roll20's "living world" campaigns such depraved hives with no quality standards whatsoever?

These applications hardly even pay attention to the setting or the character creation rules.

This one character is Yuuka Kazami from Touhou, a "youkai" actually named "Yuuka Kazami." She flagrantly ignores the setting and the character creation rules yet still manages to be a poorly optimized fighter. She was accepted nevertheless.

This is one of the main reasons I haven't join any group apart from one I joined 3 years ago (which I'm still in).
Sadly the group is still running 4e, which after playing 5e, I can't help but hate. Also the DM is running an extra hard varient, which make non-optimal builds non-viable.

Mostly the Reva box and Anna that are on their way.

I wasn't initially sold on Reva until I started to consider how her corpse marker based threat range lets her threaten and control a lot of the board, especially with the Shieldbearers.

Anna sounds like a good no fun allowed henchman that I'll have to find a good place for.

Sup /tg/, stuck in an airport for the next 8 hours because some kid had a siezure on my next flight, so I'm asking you, what is your character's motivations, why are they on their current path, and/or what drives them to get out of bed in the morning?

My current character is your standard mage cause my last character died too quickly. Started him on a quest to actually use his studies and find out more about other forms of magic. All around jobber, but he does the best he can. Also he developed a drug problem after trying something the rogue gave him and has to make money to continue the experience so he can document it.

He didn't actually want to do it, but once he had the ruby pendant in his hand there was no going back. Now he's pursued by all manner of thugs, bounty hunters, and assassins, but it was all worth it, right?
>>
My Wizard is basically the security/mastermind/leader of our group of ne'er-do-wells. She does what she does because it's highly lucrative and she's convinced the rest of the party wouldn't be able to find their own asses with a map and both hands without her. Honestly, she's grown very attached to basically the only family she's ever had, but rationalizes it away with human calculus.

We've shifted to general adventuring as a free company, because that pays better than crime. We have a pirate ship now, that she is intensely focused on upgrading and prepping for general freight.
>>
>>48578742
My rogue's general purpose for adventuring was to get away from a city where he got in trouble with both the guards and the criminal element, as well as to get out of poverty and help others in the same shitty situation so they don't need to resort to the same things as him.
His motivation for his current quest is that it will get him a pardon, solving one of the problems in his home city, perhaps moving him towards being able to properly set up shop there one day and set up some way to help the local poor in a more substantial way.

How would you thematically describe the fallout of an unstoppable force hitting an immovable object?
More to the point, how do you vividly describe the collateral damage from a fight between two humanoid shaped and size beings who are effectively both unstoppable and immovable without it being "The world explodes and you all die".
32 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>48578666
It depends on the forces involved. An "unstoppable force" doesn't have to be very strong. Maybe it's just highly efficient and consistent. The same could be said of an immovable object.

First, run it in any series except the classic series, as its the least flexible in terms of plot.

Then just use a suitable generic superheroes system like M&M or something and call everyone a robot.

I've been thinking of running a superhero campaign. The basic idea would be that, in the DCU, all of the heroes and many of the villains literally just disappeared one day. Nobody knows why, and any concerted efforts to find out what happened tend to have horrible consequences for those taking part in the investigation.

So the party are people who take up the title of "hero" in this new world. Maybe some of them are just highly trained, like Batman. Maybe one of them becomes the new Green Lantern of Sector 2814. Perhaps another trains in the mystical arts, or experiences some freak accident that gives them powers.

Whatever their gifts, they now have to defend the Earth in the place of those who came before, who have been relegated to legend.

Would Savage Worlds be a decent system to use for this?

Also I'll need to reread Nextwave before I run it to give me a feel for how to handle the PC mentality applied to a superheroic universe.

Depending on the system they have "rules" for over exertion. However stretching doesn't increase mass, and stretching ones brain doesn't make them smarter.
