At Gencon people have to register for games before the event, right? I have only been to conventions where signup opens a few hours before the rounds begin.

There will be some CoC 7, Pulp Cthulhu, DELTA GREEN, and Unknown Armies games and I'd love to hear more about them!

Gencon sounds too big to take in. I've never been and probably never will because it's in Brazil (1985). But I'd love to hear about this year's events.

Definitely going to want to check out the Forgeworld booth to get my resin crack, and then I just wing it. This will be my 4th Gencon and I find it's better to just wing shit nowadays.

I tried that before. I was trying to take the lands by storm. Ended badly, the established religion hunted me down. Still was probably the best time I had as a cleric. The party got behind my revolution.

Desperation bump

Composite your bow up to your STR mod, and get it enchanted. Otherwise you seem to have decent selections, so blame shitty dice. See if you can get CON and DEX swapped. Remember to use Deadly Aim. Beg the wizard for Haste, or else get potions of it yourself any time you have a prep round/ambush/etc.

Just play something that's not D&D.

I actually have a character who does this, although it's fluffed as his personal invention rather than him just riding the golem. I suplexed and then curbstomped a boss in it once.

As for why they aren't used as player characters, IIRC they're sapience is questionable at best. They really are just giant war bots.

GURPS.

Not even if I'm runnign it. GURPS splats are some of the best "how to GM THIS" books you will ever read. Ignore the rules and read the sidebars and the rest of the book, and you'll get more good advice on running a game than anything other than pure experience can give you.

Playing guerillas/bushwackers would give your characters the chance to act pretty independently without being confined by the strictures of a regular army. That can bog down military themed RPGs, but if your team is riding with Quantrill or Forrest or whoever then things will be more flexible.

You could probably use a Wild West-themed system of some sort to capture the right period feel.

For reference, a typical hex in an old-school sandbox was 24 miles across IIRC.
