Discuss the viability of TSW as a tabletop setting.

Thinking of running a game in this setting, or something similar. Thoughts? Suggestions? I've always liked the premise of the game, even though the execution left a lot to be desired.

Also looking to discuss any other setting with horror and fantasy elements and/or urban magic in a modern setting
>>
>>48628212

World of Darkness, Chronicles of Darkness, Delta Green, Urban Shadows, Unknown Armies, and Dresden Files all deal with this to varying degrees. What are you looking for in a game, super gritty horror, comic book-like monster fighting, playing the monsters yourselves, what?
>>
>>48628287
The Condemned series is a pretty good example, if you're at all familiar with that. I like the idea of a standard modern, urban setting, but oh wait, now there are cults and monsters and nightmares in my city of generic criminals.

In this instance, setting and atmosphere are more important than the nature of the gameplay, which I can modify to fit my needs if it's for the sake of a good setting.

I've been working on this personal project for a while and I wanted to create a pantheon of gods for it. However, I had an idea of different religions head gods joining in on some type of tournament with their champion. But I've never made a pantheon before so my question to you is:

How the fuck do you create a fucking pantheon of gods being a bunch of dicks?
12 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>48626523
Step 1: You don't
>>
>>48626568
I mean, yea, but humor me. Is it as simple as creating specific gods for bullshit reasons ala Disc World?
>>
>>48626686
okay, you should world build first, civ build second and god build third.
Gods should thrive around one of the following: nature, fundamental existance or civilization. God of the forest, check
God of crafting, check
God of fear, check
you get a few basic gods that are important cornerstones to your world. look to actual religions or pre-established pantheons in game. then throw out some badass sounding names and you have a pantheon.
dynamics are always a good idea as well. brother and sister gods, a fire god that has an intense hatred of mice because one crawled up his pant leg.
also, most pantheons have a "creator" that has bestowed a lower form of divinity upon essences he has deemed important enough to require guidance for.

Anyone here play Ben Robbins' games? They're essentially freeform, collaborative world-exploring games all, the flagship obviously being Microscope (which, at this point, isn't even my favourite). It gets even your least creative friends to actually invent shit and get invested in a fictional world, provided you have any friends.

Also, if you ain't played this yet, fucking do it. No other game played around a table has brought this much fun into my life.

I actually have a copy, but I haven't had a chance to play it yet. I did not know of the Explorer supplement. It seems like a pretty good game.
I'm considering running it once I get a group together for D&D so that everyone will be involved in world-building instead of just me.
The only other world-building game I've played was Dawn of Worlds, with mixed results.
>>

I'll start: while your character walks on a lonely road he encounters
>a person
>wearing a long, grey coat, long grey trousers and a wide-brimmed hat, along with comfortable shoes and black gloves.
>turns out that the person has a skull for a head
>a skeleton wearing new clothes
>the skeleton nods a greeting
>it seems unarmed

He'd probably nods back, then records everything afterwards to show to the committee.
>>
>>48626024
Depends on what personality is driving at the time. One worries about going crazy and might break down in nerves while, the other already knows he is and probably wouldn't blink twice at a dapper skeleton out for stroll.
>>
>>48626024
he would ask who the skeleton was. if there was no response he would bid him good day and be off

Just tried this out alongside the quickstart rules guide, and I had a lot of fun with it.

I feel like it does a good job of teaching the basics of the system to anyone willing to learn it and/or anyone new to RPGs. Another thing I liked is how it was written/formatted like an old CYOA book like I used to have. Having multiple endings is a nice touch, as it gives a good replay value to it as well.

7th is definitely the best CoC so far. They took a lot of spread out information and compiled it in a new structure, making the whole thing accessible again. The new sanity details are great! Pushing rolls and luck spending work wonderfully. The sheet makes more sense. Success levels and directly opposed rolls, especially in combat, make everything run very smoothly and fast.

It's a great game. So well made, it's a good generic base for homebrews of any flavor.

so what is exactly the problem with having 8, 10 or more attributes? it only adds complexity at character generation. beyond that it's just one more number on the char sheet. i fail to see the problem with attribute spam.

>it's just one more number
That's the philosophy that gave us Eoris.
>>
>>48625495
Your point? This doesn't look more complicated than D&D 3.X, except notation is via marking circles, instead of writing down numbers?
>>
>>48625640
The core mechanic (I won't get into anything else because I've managed to successfully block it from my mind) is rolling a number of d20 equal to your stat plus skill. Additionally, you roll a d20 to determine margin of success/failure, but that d20 might be one of the one's you're already rolling. Normally, you're looking for dice over 15, but your stat mod can change what number you're looking for based on how many points you sink into it. Count successes, adjust for penalties, and see if you succeed.

You do that for every single roll to do anything.

>make a spreadsheet
>number 10 20 30 tc are your typical pcs actions
>every other number gets something random like "punch the nearest person" or "start reenacting a song from your groups bard, fail miserably"
> secretly roll a d100 every time you get an action

have fun.

So my party went into this spooky crypt and got this bag that looked like bag of holding. Told them it could hold 60 cu. ft. of matter in hopes that they would put their magical items in it. Well instead they used it to try and take a prisoner inside of it. Since it's actually a bag of devouring it ate the prisoner. The wizard now uses the bag as his primary weapon. I have no problem with this, I actually think it's really cool and creative but I have no fucking idea what to tell him to roll when he attacks with it or how the victim would try to get away or out. Any DMs out there that can help?

>>
NEVER give smart players cursed items.
Cursed items are mad OP.
>>
>>48624480
That's such a huge nerf though with nothing in the rulebook to back it up. I like the idea of the bag devouring its victim if the attack is successful but one attack roll seems like not enough

Watching other people play pen and paper rpgs is what got me into it at first, namely itnejp's swan song The ending was a huge disappointment and it could've ended at titanfall for a much better ending in my mind. Is there any other series in this style I could watch or something I can show as an example to get people into playing?

Also discuss itmejps rollplay stuff too if you like

Fun while it lasted but yeah, the ending fucked sucked: psychic mumbo jumbo and mystical bullshit in a show that was pretty grounded for the most part, and no main plots finished up satisfactorily. At least Mirrorshades embraced its weird soap-operaness and had a happy ending
>>
I don't think swan song was that good desu...maybe people just like it so much because it's a shiny turd in a sea of not so shiny turds.
