honestly, its become the first answer to any system question (warranted most times) but how many of you use it for your primary system?

I wanna use it but my players are shitters who don't even wanna read lite.
>>
I run most of my campaigns with it. I lucked out and though me and my group started out with D&D, we always had an open mind about trying out other systems (not saying that D&D is inherently shit it just seems to be a common issue for a lot of people that their group doesn't want to branch out.)

I stumbled on GURPS after hearing about it from a GT retrospective on the fallout games. It sounded interesting and we gave it a shot for a one-shot zombie apocalypse game and loved it.

It isn't for everybody but we personally really enjoyed the detail-oriented nature of the system. One of the first questions my players asked the first time they got hit in D&D was "can I roll to dodge?" In D&D this is abstracted as part of AC, in GURPS dodge is an actual maneuver. This sort of thing is something we enjoy.

While some groups prefer abstraction on things like damage, armor, personality and the like, my group prefers detail and structure, something GURPS is great for.
>>
>>48835867
Define 'primary'. I use it for almost all games that are at least somewhat grounded in reality, since it breaks down a bit in the higher TLs and power levels. The amount of work required to make GURPS run those well exceeds the amount needed to learn another system.

For your general down-to-earth needs it's really good and extremely flexible, and lends itself best to homegrown settings or multiworld games.

>The most reliable form of communication is through the Naga Messenger Guild, a series of incredibly long snakes connected by talking heads that traverses the deep calcite caves of the Underworld. You talk to a naga on one end, see, and the naga on the other end speaks with your voice, relaying your message to the recipient. Prices are steep, and even most lords can only afford a few minutes of conversation per day.

Traveller

Secrets of the Blood Nebula

In Dead Space you are forced to make use of your tools to use as weapons (in which case it's oddly convient they work so well in that capacity but that's neither here nor there)

That said, in what scenario do you imagine say, a giant vibro blade, essentially an industrial scale turkey cutter used to cut ship hulls would then be pressed ganged into use as a weapon before being refined as such? Or perhaps something like Pic related.

I think OP wants to make a very specific thing happen in his game but is disguising it as a general question so it doesnt look like he's just asking for help
>>
>>48835382

Not really, I suppose I didn't phrase it well but the idea was making weapons out of tools I guess.

It's not like it hasn't bee done before; flails used for threshing wheat turning into, well, flails. Scythes with their original blades replaced by straighter ones for use in combat that sort of thing only using future shit

I'm going to be running an Only War campaign where the first 'campaign' is going to be a several month long battle to take a large city, in the theme of Stalingrad or urban combat in the various Yugoslav wars.

I want pretty comparable enemy force composition, so it's probably going to be a mixture of neutral-leaning recidivists and revolutionaries with Chaos agitators from off-world that started the whole thing. They've declared independence and taken control of large swathes of their world.

What I'm lacking is a compelling reason for the Imperial Navy to not just annihilate the entire city from orbit and save everyone the trouble. Holy sites? An inquisitor (and the Chaos agitators led by a tiny warband of elite CSM for pants-shittingly terrifying engagements where the only smart choice is to run) is looking for something underneath the city?

Help me /tg/.

The excuse I'm using in my campaign is that the Navy was needed elsewhere ao they just shattered the planet's space capability and then fucked off to a new warzone

Factories, archives, various useful/irreplacable shit.
>>
Holy cites are good

Planetary governor who refuses to (or can't) leave is good

fuck with 40k you could literally just have the Navy not give enough of a fuck to bombard the planet, like the admiral has the ships fuck off to somewhere else.

What does /tg/ think of the concept of a "chrono-phylactery"?

Basically, the user binds the parts of their soul not to an object, but for example, a particular TIME period and the history of that period. For example, a user's phylactery could be the period of the Roman Civil War or the Three Kingdoms period of China. It could even be more recent events such the Vietnam War or the War on Terrorism. The main point is that the soul is tied to that particular time period itself.

My conception of a chrono-phylactery is this:
* It is created by being heavily relevant to that historical period, usually manifesting being responsible for huge number of deaths such that a wound in the Collective Unconscious (or World tree or some other universal spiritual entity) is created, with the user's soul being turned into a 'scab' to close up that wound. Alternatively, but very rarely, it could be through acts of benevolence that turn the user's soul into a "protein shake" for the Great Spiritual Force.
* It must be created knowingly and intentionally.
* The integrity of that historical period anchors the integrity of the chrono-phylactery. Time travelers can severely harm a time-lich's soul in the present by tampering with the real events in that period.
* The chrono-phylactery offers no protection to the time-lich before it was created.
* The power of the chrono-phylactery to maintain a time-lich's corporeal life fades over time, such they must further create more wounds in the Great Spiritual Force or nourish it. However, the more a time-lich does this, the exponentially greater their acts must be.
* Historiography can affect the health of the time-lich's soul. If they remain extolled or infamous in history, their Chrono-phylactery is more effective on the whole. If they are trivialised or forgotten, the chrono-phylactery is weaker for it.

How would you further design this concept?

I'm sorry to say, but as is I dont like it. I think you have a cool concept here but when you tie it to closely to the idea of the lich you're surrendering to much of the mystery to pre-established concepts.

Could you instead decouple it from a phylactery and have the creature who's gaining power from this remain nameless? It would come off as more "eldritch" then "undead" depending on your narration.

Furthermore, I recommend reading "The Sabbath" by Rabbi Abraham J. Heschel. A large part of his thesis is on the nature of the sabbath and how it is a construct in time. I think this could help give you some language to better express your idea.
>>
Dealing with that would be an unpleasant hassle that no system will handle well.
It's clunky and obnoxious at best, and almost certainly tedious to boot.
Unless you're trying to fap to your DMPC, please stop. Actually, stop either way.
>>
Ok so looking at this my first question is how the players are supposed to beat it without time bullshit powers.

In all I really don't like it, it seems to be confusing and obtuse for the sake of being confusing and obtuse, an attempt to be "original" instead of something that's actually cool and useful. I feel that it would work in a really really really really specific setting and/or game but as a general thing to use in stuff I really don't like it. I'd sooner just have the lich hide his phylactery in a specific time period.

Like Islam? No thanks.
>>
>>48828466

Because that would require effort and research, which is beyond most writers, who would rather just vomit vaguely-remembered things they osmosed as a child.

Saying they "derived" from LotR is being super generous, because it implies they looked at or read LotR at any point in their lives.
>>
>>48828466
Name me a good fantasy series that is strongly inspired by lord of the rings. You'll probably find some but you can't deny that the best fantasy works are original creations. It's the generic shit that tends to be Tolkien ripoffs.

Recently finished a campaign with this.
Thoughts on the game/system?

I think it's very lore-friendly while still giving you room to change it around a bit, but the combat system is a tad overdone (atleast for me).

Jedi are fucking overpowered, jedi knight is the most crazy prestige to exist, noble is fucking useless. The game is full of options, but 80% is useless shit and you soon find out that there are only a handful of GOOD options here.
Skill focus (use the Force) should be banned at all tables.

Brought up Experilous Worldbuilder yesterday and I saw some people were interested. The thread died overnight, so I'm bringing it back. Give it a go and see what you can make.

https://experilous.com/1/product/worldbuilder-demo

You can create a world from a seed and some parameters, including moisture, ocean level, temperature, and tectonics. There's also potential for under-the-hood customization, though that's beyond my grasp. In all, it's an interesting tool.

Are there any worldbuilding tools you recommend?

>>
A globe is fine, but is hardly practical for real use in a campaign. There are a few map projections in Worldbuilder, but I'm not a big fan of them. Here's a 2:1 equirectangular projection of the world I made.
>>

From here, I can use this tool to convert the map to one of over 100 representations. http://www.giss.nasa.gov/tools/gprojector/

Most of the projections look way too impractical for campaign purposes. I want something that minimizes distortion, but is aesthetically pleasing and accessible to players. I import the equirectangular map, pick Eckert IV, and adjust the center.

I think the result is something accessible, practical, and interesting to look at. This particular world has a lot of land, all connected, but with natural borders from many huge mountain ranges. There are a few islands, too. Since Worldbuilder lacks rivers and lakes, I would paint those in myself.

Hey, /tg/. I'm running a Dread game for my friends. I wanted it to have a cool 80's Spielberg feel like Goonies, E.T., Super 8, and Stranger Things.

It takes place on the last week of summer vacation before the kids (players) go to high school.

I need some cool ideas for a one-shot for them to play.
Aliens
Monsters
Government agents
Psychic girls.

I need something that will feel both new and familiar. Any ideas?

Pennywise the Clown or something to that effect. Really anything that lives in the sewers is going to give you a good opportunity for a dungeon encounter.

Run Ten Candles instead. It's kind of like Dread but with a cooler gimmick.
