I'm sure there are many of us here, people who just lurk /tg/ because we don't ever play any /tg/s - maybe there ain't a FLGS anywhere near us, maybe we ain't got friends, maybe there are other reasons. No matter.
This thread is for us unfortunates. Let's discuss what characters we'd make if we ever played RPGs, what sort of adventures we'd run if we were DMs, what sort of armies we'd assemble if we were wargamers, what sort of stories would we've told...
I feel ya. I live in a town with no FLGS and all my friends left before I could run an Campaign I've wanted to run for over 10 years. Don't even have anyone to play Commander with.
>Forever GM
My fellow african american.
Never played any game, but I love all things nerdy. Im a undercover fa/tg/uy, since my gf and all my friends are normies and wouldnt understand. So I just lurk here and worldbuild secretly to satisfy my inner dork.
Hey /tg/ I'm thinking about running a game soon with a Sumerian/Babylonian-type civilization as a heavy focus, with the party exploring the barbarian-infest lands north of their desert empire, and I'd like some general advice on what kind of elements should be heavily focused on.
The system I'll be using is 5e, and I feel like I can have most of the classes and backgrounds available. Would warlocks cutting deals for power with beings outside of the traditional pantheon be pretty heretical, or would someone claiming they made contact with a new god or spirit-force be pretty in-line? Of course it would ultimately come down to me, but I wouldn't want something to stick out too much.
Anyway, please post general advice and topical information, pictures, etc. I'm sure there's some ancient civilization enthusiasts in here.
With the warlock thing that would depend how HERESY you want the civilization to be. If you want them to be eager to reach out into the cosmos and the world then a warlock's pact might not be seen as such a bad thing. If they want to isolate and be SUMERIA STRONK then they wouldn't be so cool about it.
Also to be honest I can't think of any real key points to stand out aside from general technology. From what I've seen on the topic the more we learn about ancient civilizations the more we realize they are just like us.
... Wow /tg/, I'm disappointed. Anyway OP, I can shed /some/ light. How advanced is the area/the civilization technologically, first of all? Sumerians and Babylonians IRL were in a really interesting period where they actually had to figure out how to /properly ride/ horses. At the time, basically only nomads knew much about horses.
>Would warlocks cutting deals for power with beings outside of the traditional pantheon be pretty heretical, or would someone claiming they made contact with a new god or spirit-force be pretty in-line?
It'd be completely legit. The Babylonians especially were incredibly syncretic, and mages in any important position would be /expected/ to call upon even foreign gods just to keep their bases covered.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belshazzar
This guy for instance called in a Jew to figure out some shit after his own sorcerers failed to. Regardless of how historical that story is, it wouldn't've been out of character for the culture.
Something else very interesting about the time period is that lots of ancient civilizations in the are considered physical idols to /be/ the incarnation of their gods, and at times conquerors would take these statues as the 'ultimate trophy' to be displayed back home. There's even a few cases where as far as we can tell empires ma have taken these idols from their subjects and held them hostage to assure good behavior.
Hope you include sacred prostitution /op/
In your opinion, what two creatures would make the most powerful hybrid?
>>48840005
Rhino-hippos.
RIP Rhinorambe
>>48840005
Real life? If by powerful you mean most likely to actively alter the world around it, Human-anything.
If you mean by just raw power, maybe a whale-anything.
It's that time again, folks! Let's get a late night party thread up and running.
I remember these threads.
Here's for hoping /tg/ contributes.

And I'm here to bump the good stuff
Posting my favorite group then. Don't know what happened to the artist.
What can salt magic do?
>purify (saline sterility)
>preserve (salting food)
>protect against/dispel supernatural forces
>protect against/dispel evil forces
>create salt crystals for weapons and barriers
>turn people into pillars of salt
>dehydrate people
>enhance many industrial crafting processes
>melt ice
>extinguish metal fires
>make food taste better
>make people bitter
How is this not an incredibly versatile superpower?
>>48839520
You forgot one.
>Make people barren.
>>48839876
> Implying barrenness doesn't make people salty
>>48839876
Isn't that make the land barren?
I've been reading the Fallout Pen and Paper rulebook over the last couple of days, and I have a simple question
Is it any good?
>>48839169
You mean this one?
No. It slavishly copies every mechanic from the original game, including ones that don't work when you have to compute everything by hand, and the ones that barely worked in the original game.
>>48839322
This. I loved it as a kid but it was really obnoxious. Just steal the setting for a better system.
Well you are the one that read it.
How do you make character portraits? Do you draw them by hand with your own shitty skills? Do you look up similar pics online? Do you get drawfags or use commissions?
More importantly, and the thing I really want is, do you know if any program that's good for making character portraits? Even if not full body ones, really good facial ones would be a god-send. Heromachine only goes so far.
I was thinking of using EVE online, but I don't like the idea of having to make a throw-away account for the 15 day trial every time I want to make a portrait.
>>48838815
You know this is a very clever thing to do, use another game to make a character portrait.
You could look to Skyrim/Fallout and that will give you a good spread of faces for games, but that's going to depend on the kind of game you are playing.
Made one in Pokemon once
FFXIV has a free benchmark/character designer, if you don't mind your characters being on the anime side.
Okay /tg/, I need some help.
I want to make a library themed dungeon, but I'd like some suggestions as to what sort of traps, creatures, or puzzles would be found within.
The idea is that the main surface is a normal library, but the important or forbidden books (such as those containing ancient history of the world) are hidden deep within the forgotten maze of books beneath.
The PCs, of course, will have to quest through this place to find the information they are looking for.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
And yes, this was inspired by the series Negima.
>>48838596
A trap that triggers a firestorm through the corridor that doesn't burn books, scrolls, or other such things.
Swinging blades that give really bad paper cuts.
Mimic books.
Collapsing book racks.
Archer skeletons that slide around on those ladder things.
Shadowy creatures moving across the tops to drop on the party from behind.
Phantasmal librarian that can help if they return a book to its proper place.
What are some good /tg/ related podcasts? You know, the kind where you can listen to other people having fun instead of having fun yourself?
>>48838546
I really liked critical hit, and the adventure zone is alright.
I also just typed "call of cthulhu rpg" into youtube, and am listening to the playlist by 'shadowhawk2012'
>>48838546
If you just want some IDEAS, try Night Vale. But not too far, they get really annoyingly preachy. Has a really nice, banal sort of approach to the supernatural.
>>48838927
>critical hit
This is a long fucking list of episodes. Should I just start at the beginning here or what?
Kobold thread
I had an all kobold campaign one time, it was pretty cool.
Plucky underdog heroes fighting to make the world a better place despite their many disadvantages, winning out because they were clever little bastards.
Kobolds appeal to me in ways halflings just plain don't, not completely sure why.
>>48838712
I know exactly what you mean. Making traps is kobold territory so that might be part of it, I always found stuff like that fun
Any one else into solo gaming? What systems have you found plays well with a single player and what doesn't?
I thought Marvel's Legendary plays exceedingly well solo as long as you're using the advanced rules. Presents a decent challenge and a lot of variety for minimal cost.
Say Goodbye to Villains I think has a solo mode, same with Space Hulk: Deathwing
>>48838087
I recently picked up the Quill system, but I haven't got to look it over or try it yet. It's built for solo play, and like De Profundis, it's all about correspondence and letter writing, but works in a different and simpler way than that game, and doesn't have the whole Lovecraft focus.
>>48839658
Dwarf themed supplement.
>Character dies
>DM orgasms
Is this normal?
>>48838065
Depends how the character died.
>>48838148
>>48838065
>DM Orgasms
>Character Dies
Is THAT normal?
So, I've wanted to run a game as DM for years now. Never had the chance to, but I think I will now.
What system would work for a no-magic game with heavy emphasis on horse combat (takes place partially on a steppe) and minor survivalist features?
Furthermore, what systems balance realism with fun well?
Picture is a concept for the game-world.
Knight-monastic order like a late antiquity Templars, with some of that fictional occult stuff thrown in for flavor.
I'm also willing to take draw requests for tips, insiders, and answers other than "GURPS".thanks senpai
Self-bumping with /tg/ related images.
Knights!
This thread will be used to share risk maps
I'm down to play this one if anyone wants to host.

Dual lands wouldn't hurt you either
