What does he mean by this? Why did Archaon yearn so much for the end of the world and everything? Was this ever explained?

Not really.

I can ignore the time periods of a setting and such when it comes to running a game (also I personally love the idea of Skaven ruining everything because of conflictary doomsday plots)

The characterization of a character though? That stuff hurts, man. That cuts deep.

Here are today's topics:

1. Rules can be dry reading. Does fluff + lore grease the wheels of a game / RPG system for you when you're learning it, or does it get in the way of the information you're looking for? Which books handle this best?

2. Most RPG characters are loners before they join the group. Is it possible to include living, active family (perhaps even wife and kids) into character creation and not ruin the fantasy? Does being a hero mean being a solitary rolling stone type?

3. Also how's the game designing going? Any podcasts or resources you find interesting about game design?

1. I want enough lore to have context for the rules I'm reading. Make sure to make clear what is fluff and what is rules, though.

2. Of course you can have living family. Just don't force it on anyone hellbent on playing a loner and it's fine.

3. Last week I figured out what kind of game I want to make. Now I'm spinning my wheels, jotting a few notes down when I get an idea but no clear springboard for getting down to business.

>1. Rules can be dry reading. Does fluff + lore grease the wheels of a game / RPG system for you when you're learning it, or does it get in the way of the information you're looking for? Which books handle this best?
Lore is needed to make the mechanics feel like anything. FATE shows what happens when the numbers are just numbers floating in a void; I've seen multiple FATE GMs come to the realization that they have no idea why they're assigning the difficulties that they are, other than that it had some relation to the skill of the character making the attempt.

>2. Most RPG characters are loners before they join the group. Is it possible to include living, active family (perhaps even wife and kids) into character creation and not ruin the fantasy? Does being a hero mean being a solitary rolling stone type?
I actively incentivize against loners where I can. People with families and real relationships are way healthier spiritually and literally more alive than people going it alone, in at least one of my projects, but I've also seen making them more easily persuaded ("someone who doesn't stand for something will fall for anything" and all that) or just having social ties be more powerful than an equivalent amount of resources spent on personal improvement.

>3. Also how's the game designing going? Any podcasts or resources you find interesting about game design?
Slowly but surely.

>Players start showing up with necklaces, daggers and other collectibles to "enhance the play"
>Players ask if they should come dressed in fantasy gear
>"Maybe I'll just do my hair and wear this mask and bracelet"
>None of them have even asked to take a look into the rule book
>None of them have looked into the list of items and monsters for inspiration
>None of them have wondered about the various splats and expansions I've talked about

What the hell? Why are they so fixed on the material side of the hobby? Isn't that the least relevant and most boring part of the game? What about the rules, the imaginary possibilities, the immersion?
What the hell?!

How do I keep from railroading my players? I am running my first campaign and I am terrified that I will railroad them and they will all hate me and the game but not say it because they are being polite.

It's impossible to not railroad the players.
The best you can do is let the players think they had a choice.

The players don't want to investigate those missing villagers?
Cool, they "randomly" find a dungeon with hapless villagers imprisoned by orcs.

And I'm sure better GMs can be much more subtle than that.

>Do not plan any details.
No, not that.

The trick is that you have to put them on rails for there to really be a purpose or story, or any kind of action at all most of the time. Some players can just come up with their own shit to do, but they are rare, and you probably won't have them.

So, you come up with what they are going to do, and you put down enough information about how it happens, what obstacles they face, and who they interact with, that you can run it. You also keep it modular, like >>48861591 suggested, so you can still lead them to what you want in via other paths.

But to avoid railroading, you don't say no to their solutions. You create the problem, they come up with a solution, and you arbitrate fairly and impartially whether it is successful. Tell them they need to go rescue the princess from the tower is not railroading. It becomes railroading when they come up with a plan for HOW to rescue the princess, and you shoot it down and force them to follow the plan you had in mind. Let them handle things how they want. If it works, it works. If it doesn't, it doesn't.

Am I the only one who really loves the d20 modern wealth system? Keeping track of money in RPGs tends to lead to economies that either border on the autismal or make zero sense (look at the pricelists in any given D&D edition and really think about it. It'll take you half a minute to find something stupid).

Making it more abstract with a wealth system simply allows you to classify something as "cheap" or "expensive" and based on your wealth level you can either easily afford something, not at all, or it'll be incredibly costly to you (let's say that buying something exactly on your wealth level knocks you down a level). It's a lot more managable for players and DMs alike, and allows DMs to introduce purchaseable objects that aren't in the DMG or other books purely by declaring its worth relative to wealth levels. This system is so convenient, I wish mainstream D&D would use it in lieu of gold pieces.

Pic related, macroeconomics.

Boxes from return to rav, gatecrash, dragon's maze are rather cheap, you could get a lot of drafting in with sets like those. So much depends on your play group, if you are looking for card value, you would draft different sets than if you were looking for straight up fun interactions.

What is Invisible Sun? See for yourself.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/montecookgames/invisible-sun

Invisible Sun is a game that costs $200 to buy. It's basically Cypher System (consumable cyphers, spending points to lower difficulties), but with d10s and D&D 5e's advantage/disadvantage.

Actual play: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDlXierCCeQ

Invisible Sun is a special game because it lets you schedule one on one sessions with your GM between group sessions! For these, you earn XP and one-use superpowers that let you blow away major obstacles. So if the party was having huge trouble with something in the session, you can schedule a one on one session to win XP and solve that problem off-screen.

If you can't make it to a session, that's fine. Your character will "fade away" into the real world, and everyone will play without you. You won't earn XP (in this game, everyone can earn individual XP for doing things!), but that's fine, because you can just schedule a one on one session later to catch up on XP and one-use superpowers.

But even if you attend all group sessions, you can still schedule one on one sessions if you really want more XP and one-use superpowers. Invisible Sun is an RPG that rewards dedication!

If invisibility is a mind-affecting spell, I will kill myself.

For the purposes of practicality what functions would you consider essential for augmented eyes? Further, what limitations do you or would you place when introducing or using augmentations in general?

For the sake of the DOTS people this is a meta discussion of cybernetic enhancements and augmentations of all sorts independant of a setting or system although they can be brought up for the sake of discussion.

>>
>>48858559
Being at least on par with the average for normal eye sight, comfort, and ease of being cleaned.
>>
>>48858607

I would think that's a given.

If standard sorts you give to people who've lost their eyes or just simply replace them that should be enough although I would include some means of connecting to an external device and able to display a hud of sorts with AR functionality as well.

Military and use by non civilians could vary from specialization (i.e. the ability to zoom in and see fine details) to military and governmental applications (like the scene in GitS where the diplomat is reading an encrypted paper document).

In which case the eyes couldn't be easily taken out without surgery at least.
>>
>>48858559
>For the purposes of practicality what functions would you consider essential for augmented eyes?

Obviously, high definition of the image and accurate colour capturing. The first thing I want from my eyes is for them to see clearly. Only then we can go into secondary things like zooming, seeing in broader spectrums, focus assist or augmented reality.

The most obvious limitation is our natural limits. Augmented eyes need to transfer all that information to brain, and a brain can handole only so much of it before the brain itself needs to be augmented.

In TT terms, this can be represented by eye implants having either more specialised but stronger benefits or weaker benefits but with a bigger array of those at once. If you want to have both you need to start upgrading the rest of your body or installing additional processing hardware.

I was reminded of this last night.

Back during OG Mirrodin standard or extended, Tron was a deck. And Mindslaver was a card.

And once, in a tron mirror, I remember being mindslavered turn 4 or 5, and they just used my turn to manaburn me for 14.

Honorable mentions would include the time I was up against someone competing for a top 8 slot, and I was playing a fairly controlling deck, can't remember exactly what. Our game was the last one up at the time so pretty much everyone was watching, and the other guy made some kind of minor misplay, got flustered, and fairly quickly tilted himself from a game that was just about even to a painful to watch stomp. By the end, his hands were shaking and he looked slightly ill. I felt like I didn't so much win the game as stand back and watched him beat himself.

Another time was the prerelease for m10, right after the rules overhaul. I was in the final round, and my opponent scooped due to a misread of a card. We decided to redo the third match, and ended up in a situation where we had both misunderstood the new wording on lifelink, and it cost me the game.
>>
>>48865615
Look up original Mindslaver from Mirrodin. Read the fine print.

Playing Commander, my general was Thraximundar, turn 1 Island, Chrome mox>cast Demonic Tutor, turn 2 Mountain, cast Show and Tell, think I'm hot shit for landing Blightsteel Colossus, guy to my right puts down og Ulamog. He won about 6 turns later with no player offering meaningful resistance.

>Next, they descended the tomb of an ancient abhorrent tentacle creature. Its' massive limbs where as thick as tree trunks and ripped anyone they caught to shreds. The maidens they had saved earlier were now food for the beast, but one member of the group stayed behind to distract the beast while the other fled to the next floor.
