Artesia: The Known World has a completely randomized character creation system. This is unbalanced because the results on each table are *not* created equal. You might be a divinely blessed and mystically empowered king of a grand nation with superb statistics... or you could be a lowly, sickly, divinely cursed peasant with abysmal statistics.

However, you have the option of forgoing a roll at each table and instead *choosing* the result you prefer. Thus, it is completely the player's choice whether to be a god-king Übermensch or a bumbling serf.

I actually liked how D&D was represented in the show.

Yeah, they handwaved a lot of the mechanical details and rushed through things to keep the pace of the show up, but the enthusiasm, creativity and enjoyment the kids get from the experience, as well as the way it influences their problem solving skills, was really refreshing when almost every other time D&D only turns up as 'hurr durr nerds'.

I've been playing a Goliath Totem Barbarian for a couple weeks, and I'm loving the fuck out of it. This mother fucker takes hits like a champ. Not to mention, Aspect of the Beast (Bear) and Powerful Build are just fun.

How do we rework Vital Strike to actually be good?

How do we give archers a viable option besides full-attack volleys?

Tai coughs loudly. “That….won’t be necessary, sir.”

“Must I always be the one to remind you to call me Myatsuu, Tai?” the jovial monk smirks in his direction, “I think I’m more than capable of handling any discipline from here. You may leave.”

“But….” Tai begins to protest, hesitates, then nods slightly and walks out from the arched doors of the room. You can tell he expected to have a say in the matter of your sentence…

Myatsuu leans in closer to you until you are nearly eye-to-eye with his white beard.

“Now, I suppose you’ll need a punishment for your action,”
His eyes twinkle slightly before his rigid expression breaks into a grin,
“Namely not having me around to see the look on Tai’s face when it happened.”

“I’ll give you a say in what you’d consider a fair and just punishment, Amon.”

You stop to think for a moment as you consider the possibilities. You could take this as an opportunity to escape to the archives…but you’ve probably scraped the knowledge out of almost every book there already. You could meditate in the Gardens to focus your chakras or even spend some time learning from Myatsuu. As long as you don’t have to spar with Tai more, you’ll take it as a win. How about…

“I’d think teaching my own knowledge of seals to my peers would be a just punishment, si- Myatsuu.” You quickly correct yourself.

He laughs cheerily at this as he moves back to his favorite meditation spot, a single mat atop a small raised dais of earth in the richly-vegetated room. “Ah yes, teaching your own secrets then? Passing on your own efforts and powers to others. Some might even say it would be relieving yourself of your pride in the matter. How very wise of you, Amon…so be it. You’ll find them in the courtyard at this time.” He finishes with a wink before closing his eyes and reforming his familiar, stony expression of deep meditation as you turn to leave the small enclosure of the temple.

You sigh wearily. A handful of monks slightly younger than you- a couple barely past single digit ages- are your students. Once they saw their teacher for the day was a teenager himself, they lost any sense of importance in the lesson and began to openly banter and ask questions. A dark-haired monk-in-training tries to blow a grass whistle.
He ended up making sputtering noises.

You stop to think about this. The best way to go about this would be to start with the attention-grabbing stories to get them to focus on you. After you can cover the basics. Who knows? This may even end up being entertaining for you.

“Who here has heard the story of the Legendary Five Gates, the great sealing monks?” You finally call out to the group, standing up as you do so. Most of the eyes in the small crowd turn to you, puzzled.

“These five formed the basis of most sealing techniques we know to this day, and were said to possess extraordinary powers as well.”

“The Five Gates would become heroes in their time, the period of the warring clans. They traveled spreading a message of balance and harmony and spread the belief of the ninshu. Unfortunately, the time was too violent for their ideas. Realizing this, by necessity these five noble monks would transform their writings and philosophies into techniques to pacify those holding sway over populations and control power itself, the chakras.

The monks vowed to combat the evils of this world and parted ways to bring that dream to reality.
Where these enlightened ones walked, it is said that evil was banished and peace blossomed. In ending the evils of their time, the monks took action for those who could not, the oppressed and wounded. In time they would develop their own techniques and hold sway over the very hearts of men.” You finish.

Like don't get me wrong I think fantastic racism is completely chill to have in your game and I'd have no problem with a game world giving me shit for being an orc, but if you don't want your players to think that's dumb you need to balance it out in some way. It can be as simple as having some side plot relating to their half orc-ishness. Everyone likes to be the underdog, right? But it's really dumb to just go "hey I know you like thing but thing is actually forbidden in my setting" and expect players to go "wow ur right i shouldn't want thing"

He's wrong. It's not stupid, the problem is even simpler than that. You're stupid. Why would you build a setting that's inherently working against a core race? By the same logic, everyone's lost someone to everyone at some point or another and everyone should be outcast *somewhere*. Did you build some 'grand masterful storyline' (by which I mean Final Fantasy ripoff-wannabe) without bothering to ask what your players wanted to play too? Maybe a great overarching map of the continent and a special, carefully-crafted language for your new special snowflake race too?

All that aside, objections to a halfsie should last all of three levels; by level four, a PC should pretty much be able to wipe out a town singlehandedly anyway, and the town guard will get the fuck out of the way in fear of rep alone. Likewise, merchants are going to understand money and power, and unless they have a stronger backer, they'll deal with him because there's not much of a choice. A little past that, you start getting to the point where you need things that merchants can't generally provide. (And if you're working things such that there are still problems, then you really are a double-shitter, stupid, and the problem here.)
