Our picture of them paints them a cleverer and more cultured bunch, much more like todays folks than middle ages. I rather an uncivilized middle age seeming dark because of age of enlightment making it so, than roman empire.

Maybe this or that tolkien who started the whole thing made his work not very like rome. And then all fantasy felt a need to not differ so much from that picture. Only recently i started to hear of writers breaking the ideal.
Roleplaying games are inspired by fantasy novels.

Would it even be that advantageous to Stunt Double a Promised End Emrakul? They'd still control your next turn. Can it copy Aeons Torn Emrakul (I'm thinking it might, as O-Ring can target AT because it isn't a spell when its effect resolves)? If it does copy AT, who gets to take the first extra turn?

Depends what you're interested in.

If you're interested in tactical combat, 4e is the best edition by far. If you're okay with things being a bit looser and less strictly defined, 5e is the way to go.

Increased lifespan doesn't really help the rank and file, yeah your generals would be amazing but the average footsoldier would be unlikely to see many more melees than a human and most would wash out to become craftsmen or the elf equivalent of farmers/hunters just like humans did if they could.

Elven advantages would be exactly what they were in Tolkeinesque works, great leaders, great equipment, great organisation, very few actual soldiers and not much in the way of manual laborers to work supply lines.

Couple armies got burned, yes.
Kirby's mad rule set in motion things that couldn't be stopped. Roundtree does his best to save the sinking boat, but it's a herculean task.

It's often a great role to fill with an npc.

As a player, I enjoy being a healer. I feel it gives me a lot to do during this gs like stays in town, etc. It's a reason to get involved with people. This ofrers lots of opportunity for info gahering. So I tend to mix healer with face when I can.

Setting aside that of the 6-ish editions of D&D, MOST have either not had a healer role entirely (AD&D and prior) or have made healing as a role worthless (3e) or have made healing an active, aggressive part of the game (4e), all three of those are perfectly serviceable solutions to the problem.

Only shittily-made games treat healing as a "preserve the status quo" button by having it create anti-damage with their equivalent of standard actions and nothing else.

It's all about giving the healer more to do than just heal.

4e is a great example of this. The Leader role covers healing, but is also a very active and interesting support role with a lot of options for enhancing allies in different ways.

Depends on how it's chosen. I don't think having people show up with a conspiracy card would fly, since they're designed for draft.

If the conspiracies were chosen at random, then I think it might be fine.
