/fag/ Firestorm Armada General - Unfortunate Acronym Edition
How are our admirals' fleet painting progressing?
>What is Firestorm Armada?
A space naval combat game from Spartan Games that uses their Exploding Dice mechanic to create unpredictable and entertaining games.
>Free (and Complete) Rules

>How does it play in a nutshell?
Players take turns activating squadrons that move, attack with Short Ranged craft and fire their weapon systems at the opponent's fleet. Players must consider the order that they activate their squadrons, as well as the options to link weapons systems for a greater combined number of dice. Games typically run for 2-4 hours.
Terran starter Patrol Fleet, contains the older (shittier) models.
The other human faction. Religious separatists. Models are fairly similar to their more recent updates.
Favour Forward-Fixed Kinetic weapons, great for early game kills!
Directorate. Corporate Overlords with all the cool toys...
Lasers, biological weapons, corrosive weapons, corrosive lasers... biological lasers?
Robot boarding parties and cloned psychopaths for boarding parties. Cyber-warfare and cloaking.
This fleet gets to use a smattering of rules from all the races.
Alright /tg/ its time to pull out the big guns and dust off your revolvers.
so, a long time player of mine has decided he wants to GM his first game (no longer forever GM) and he's decided to do a Wild West game where the characters are Train Robbers and Banditos.
I myself have only ever done sci-fi and fantasy so i have no experience, and no assets.
He has asked for my help in getting him started, with things like maps and character tokens but he's got the story all to himself.
tl;dr wild west music and pictures please, advice on a wild west game

Been waiting for a reason to post this picture.
I've been running NCR Desert Rangers for almost a year now, and they are starting to bore me
>Outrange Khans
>Can shut down Legionnaire charges
>Good armor AND speed
>Literally can't be flanked if you got Oliver on the field
>Get a fucking extra crit die from Kimball
>Can shoot down Vertibirds in a single combat phase
Can anyone recommend me afunfaction to run?

Just run the lone wanderer with Minutemen support. Very fortification heavy army with artillery and stealth suit shenanigans.
Fuck I hate these stupid "rp a fictional game that probably actually exists" threads. There's miniatures out there, there's plenty of good rulesets.

Having never played any tabletop outside of MTG and D&D, but going off of context clues I'm going to guess
Any Cthulu and/or mystery / Secret World type game or system.
World of Darkness gets mentioned a lot.
It seems it's in the same vein of cyberpunk settings (population control, project Janus, etc.), so maybe Shadowrun?
And of course there's GURPS, which apparently covers everything.
>>48910220
I've actually thought about this a decent amount
It'd do it in Chronicles of Darkness(nWoD 2e, for those who don't pay attention to that shit), possibly having the PCs just straight up be Demons(The Descent variety, of course; again, for those not in the know, Demon the Descent is best summarized by its tagline, "A game of techgnostic espionage"--you used to serve the God-Machine(The Network) as an Angel(basically secret agents, and they can fit perfectly well as completely ordinary people when necessary), but then you had a spark of free or independent thought, and Fell. Now, the God-Machine is trying to find and kill you, and you're bound to run into Angels who pose as Demons to try and get close enough to stab you in the back, or ordinary mortals who just happened to be in the right place to fuck things up and put you in danger.)
The main cast from the show can all be done as ordinary mortals or, if you want something high-powered, as Demons, who all Fall after realizing that the comic, a piece of Concealment Infrastructure, actually contains clues to the God-Machine's future plans, and those plans are going to hurt a LOT of people.Carvel Fell when he left the Network and started writing the comic, so it isn't *technically* Infrastructure, but whatever. Jessica is a Fractal Demon-Blooded, or a full-on Demon, depending on how you wanna handle that stuff. RB and Lee are Angels(as is Mr. Rabbit), RB Falls after he realizes his name isn't actually Arby/at the end of season 1. Wilson becomes an Integrator in season 2, and at the end he returns to being an Angel.

Shitloads of health and CON, given that they're made of fucking rock.
At least 20 str given that they snap necks with no apparent effort.
Maybe low dex for saves, because they just sorta teleport everywhere.
No real CHR or WIS, but INT needs to be at least 12 or 14.
Resistance to thrust and slash, immune to poison.
Work from there.

Why does fantasy endure as the most popular genre in roleplaying games? Even in video games, space scifi usually comes up second.
Everytime I think I can't stand another thing that looks a bit too much like D&D or Conan, someone will release a Barbarians of Lemuria, or a Lamentations of the Flame Princess and revive the whole thing for me.
Wouldn't bother me much but I've found myself, all of a sudden, contemplating a medieval fantasy homebrew. Not because there aren't already dozens of really good fantasy games out there--just to make something with my own spin on the same kind of fantasy I've been interested in since about third grade.
Explain that!
Legacy
>>48909444
Because D&D came first and popularized roleplaying games.
That's about it really.
>>48909444
>just to make something with my own spin on the same kind of fantasy I've been interested in since about third grade.
Congrats; recognizing that "originality" is ultimately a silly thing to worry about due to how long humanity has been creating and imagining things and instead focusing on what you like and trying to do your own thing with it is the sign of maturity in a creative mindset.
It's kinda like how as a teenager people are obsessed with their "individuality" and so end up doing what a whole bunch of people also end up doing for literally the exact same reason; it's just a silly thing kids worry about before they actually start to know shit about life.
The trick isn't being original; it's taking something everyone already knows and presenting it as interestingly as possible to revive the entertainment value for people who have seen the same thing a million times before.
That's why all of those "totally original" special snowflake settings tend to fail; they don't actually make up for the lack of writing experience or talent and something can be the most "original" thing in the world and it can still be utter horseshit.

Conspiracy X was pretty much made for this. Research rules, alphabet soup agencies, and LOTS of weird shit. You just need to pare back the aliens, magic etc and insert parallel dimensions and such in their place.
Hey /tg/
So one of the top things I want out of an RPG system that uses Classes is that each class has a unique benefit. That's not quite the same as says "Each class has a Shtick." For instance Rogues in D&D 3.P are totted as the Skill Masters, but every class can do skills, so it's not exactly a unique skill even if they can do it better.
My experience to RPGs is rather limited but I'm looking for a system that uses defined classes and each other clearing has a unique mechanic to it (that ideally works well). Suggests?
4e D&D has some pretty strong separations in the classes.
At least in the core book, shit gets overlappy in the splats more.
Legend of the 5 Rings has some pretty stark differences between the clans based on the school abilities.
>>48908471
I've got a few examples that you might like.
In Fantasy Craft every class will have strong, niche-defining features, though they're permutations of the same sort of design in some cases. Classes have Core Abilities, which you only get if you start as that class, and first level features, as a rule, will also set you well apart from other classes.
Pic related, it's what the Burglar class gets. For comparison the Soldier's Core Ability lets them get a bonus action die when rolling attacks and damage--and action dice can explode. Altogether it means that even at level 1 Burglars are capable of extreme feats of dexterity and Soldiers are unparalleled fighters.

I'm curious what if a Ghost discovers wherever they put Sanguinius' corpse.
"At least we aren't a quest" edition.
What is the World Ends With You?
It's a strikingly original Square Enix action RPG from 2008 for the Nintendo DS about trust, collective consciousness, desperation, imagination and fabulous outfits. Characters are swept into the Underground, a parallel dimension linked to major urban centers, where they run through a 7-day gauntlet of tasks and trials by higher-plane beings called Reapers. Band together and win the Reapers' Game and you have a shot at returning to the Real World. Fail, and you face erasure.
>What is this?
This is a /tg/ Homebrew RPG based on the above game. It's designed to be fast, simple and exciting, and it adapts virtually all of the mechanics from the source game to a form optimized for a tabletop experience. Most importantly, we've striven to preserve its core themes of cooperation, psychic powers and elaborate fashions.
>What system are you using?
We've adapted the core resolution mechanic from another Tabletop game Tenra Bansho Zero into our system. Roll a pool of dice based on your Stats, and count each die that's under your Skill or Psych as a success. It's fast, easy and dynamic. Characters only have four Stats based on your strength of will and mental condition, and only 9 Skills; mixing and matching Stats with Skills creates unique actions, such as rolling Protect:Rhythm to block a punch or Protect:Flow to dodge out of the way.
To flesh out your character, you come-up with free-form Tags like "The Gambler"or "Street Smarts" which describe unique elements of your character's personality and background which fills in the gaps in your Skills. Altogether, character creation takes all of five minutes.
Combat is fast and emphasizes cooperation. Players fight as a team, sharing their a common pool of HP and passing buffs to one another so that a different Player gets to the the superstar of each Round. Range is abstract, numbers are small and the action is lightning quick.

>What's your agenda?
... That question's different from last time.
Oh well.
Main thing is, we need playtesters for testing this thing, and we need to fill out the reaper sports. I think we're in a comfortable position on how far along this game has come to warrant a full playtest. Reaper sports are important, but I think testing for balance and fun reasons does come first. As such, I'm not sure if we all want to ask the gamefinder thread about this or not, but we may have enough people in here as it is to do this thing. It may become a circlejerk on us making a game if we have just ourselves in it though.
Also, we're canning trust, and we need to talk about the UG environment a bit more to flesh out what shops are where and what we'll have other than shops.
Uh, what are you doing for brands exactly? Reaper sports can be made up but I feel like having sample brands for threads and pins would hrl

Brands are going to be holding specific types of clothing and pins, based on main stats. I don't think we've compiled them yet, but from memory, it was:
Single Stat
Wild Boar: Rhythm
Lapin Angelique: Bravery
Hip Snake: Flow
Natural Puppy: Insight
Dual Stat:
JotM: Rhythm, Insight
D+B: Rhythm, Flow
Tigre Punks: Rhythm, Bravery
Dragon Couture: Flow, Insight
Pavo Real: Flow, Bravery
Pegaso: Insight, Bravery
Triple Stat:
Sheep Heavenly: Rhythm, Flow, Insight
Mus Rattus: Rhythm, Insight, Bravery
All Stats:
Unbranded
Gatito
I was also thinking that the single Stat places should be the only ones to stock Rank 10 gear, with dual Stat places stocking up to Rank 8, and triple Stat places having only up to Rank 5.
Unbranded is the basic gear and has no Threads, and I think only the tin pin pins and very few other pins are unbranded, so there's no real shops that stock only Unbranded gear.
Gatito is special. As in, it's the best brand. It's boss gear and you can't really buy it from shops too easily, if at all.
Does that seem right to you?
>join game on roll20
>starts with lots of That Guys
>That Guys eventually leave
>group becomes a small group of cool people
>start having fun
>until one day
>you realize
>you
>you're That Guy
>the last one
>the one no one had the courage to tell to shut up
>the one no one was able to tell you that you were obnoxious
>everyone was too shy to let you know
>you look down at your bag of cheetos
>you look down at your orange hand
>and ask yourself
What do?
>>48902966
Presumably if I'm a That Guy I don't actually give a shit. Carry on being a dickhole, I suppose.
>>48902966
Stop to take a moment to appreciate how the other players and GM have put up with your shit. But stay in the group and slowly, over time become not That Guy. Start with the little things. Pay attention to the rest of the party more, actually listen to them, you know? Stop cracking lame jokes and doing stupid stuff just for the keks. Eventually, after everything has changed, you will be That Guy no longer. After all, anyone can change, and with enough time, even a highly improbable occurance becomes certain.

You are Captain SAMANTHA WELLINGS, a newly minted captain of the Centauri Accord!
"You want me to WHAT?" You glare at your resident intelligence officer, who just gives an innocent but slightly nervous smile.
"Er, the mission by our intel team was successful, but there was a... complication with the extraction." Elizabeth explains a bit too simply. "So they require a bit of assistance from us to get off planet."
"Lida, what's the status on the surface?" You ask.
"The emergency channels are flooded with distress calls." Lida frowns as she lowers the volume on her headset. "Apparently all of the automated drones and equipment on the planet are malfunctioning."
"So, if I go down there, not only do I have to deal with Hegemony forces, but rogue robots as well?" You groan.
"I know it's a lot of ask of you, but it would be a REALLY great help to us if you would provide a little lift!" Elizabeth asks sweetly.

>Familiar edition
Is there anything wrong with allowing a non-chainlock to summon a pseudodragon with Find Familiar? It honestly doesn't seem more powerful than an owl that can give advantage on perception checks and give combat advantage once per turn without provoking opportunity attacks.
>>49024571
Ehhh...kinda, I guess.
His motives and goals are a lot more like surface evil deities (my clergy should rule, all shall fear and worship me, take over the world, etc) then Lolth is.
He's superior in the sense that he's not the deific equivalent of a fat lazy bitch who's super bitter about her ugly divorce case that she lost and so keeps a lot of mean cats around her just so she can beat them because it makes her feel better.

Let's say you're in a situation where you're talking to a "normal" person who knows very little about your hobby, but knows enough to know that it usually attracts undesirable people. Yet they ask you to explain to them how is your hobby like.
If you had to, how do you explain, defend, or talk about your hobby with a regular person without sounding like an autistic sperglord?

Shrug and move along unless they are forced by circumstance to stay with you.

>>49019747
Pretty much this.
Another tack is to describe it as collective storytelling where people play make believe within a set of agreed upon rules.
> playing D&D
> player gets held at crossbowpoint by guards
> "lol I have 75 hit points"
> character falls off of a cliff
> "lol I have 75 hit points"
> character gets his head run over by a cart
> "lol I have 75 hit points"
Please explain how this game is "good". No one and nothing can die dramatically; they can only die by having their hit points whittled down in combat using pre-approved maneuvers and methods. And whenever you try to go outside these rules, D&D players sperg the fuck out, because if they aren't killed by dragonbreath that deals 10d10 damage, then YOU are the shitty GM for daring to go outside the rules of the game.
>>49013941
>run high level
>bitches characters are superhuman
If that bothers you, run first to third level games.
Hit points are explicitly an abstraction representing your ability to avoid serious harm through luck, stamina or minor magic. This has been spelled out in every DMG I've ever read, and any GM or player who doesn't know it is an idiot.
HP damage is used when there's a chance you might survive. Being shot in the head at point blank range or falling an incredible distance are likely to be fatal.
Then again, these are heroic characters we're talking about. They might survive a fall of a cliff, or being run over by a cart. Getting shot in the head is kind of a sticking point, though.
Please just ignore this butthurt troll.
Please, please just ignore him, /tg/. Do it for me.
