Just played through Operation Icestorm and I'm looking to learn more about the setting. It looks like I should get human sphere. Is it the same fluff in all editions of the book? Is there a reason to go for n3 despite the rules being on the internet?

Mostly.
N3 Human Sphere has stuff about Onyx Contact Force and USAriadna and that is new. Other than that it's reprints.

Best source of fluff will probably be the RPG, because it's written more dryly, not as in-universe article snippets.

1229 – Battle of Portopí: The Aragonese army under the command of James I of Aragon disembarks at Santa Ponça, Majorca, with the purpose of conquering the island.
1309 – The First Siege of Gibraltar takes place in the context of the Spanish Reconquista pitting the forces of the Kingdom of Castile against the Emirate of Granada resulting in a Castilian victory.

It is 333 years since the Battle of Vienna, which took place after the Imperial city of Vienna had been besieged by the Ottoman Empire for two months. The battle was fought by the Habsburg Monarchy, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Holy Roman Empire, under the command of King John III Sobieski against the invading Muslim Ottoman Empire and its vassal and tributary states, and took place at Kahlenberg Mountain near Vienna. The Viennese garrison was led by Ernst Rüdiger Graf von Starhemberg, an Austrian subject of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I. The battle marked the first time Poland and the Holy Roman Empire had cooperated militarily against the Turks, and it is often seen as a turning point in history, after which "the Ottoman Turks ceased to be a menace to the Christian world".

The opposing military forces were commanded by Grand Vizier Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha. The Ottoman army numbered approximately 90,000–300,000 men (according to documents on the order of battle found in Kara Mustafa's tent, initial strength at the start of the campaign was 170,000 men). They began the siege on 14 July 1683. The Turkish forces consisted, among other units, of 60 ortas of Janissaries (12,000 men paper-strength) with an observation army of c. 70,000 men watching the countryside. The decisive battle took place on 11 September, after the united relief army had arrived.

Historians suggest the battle marked the turning point in the Ottoman–Habsburg wars, a 300-year struggle between the Holy Roman and Ottoman Empires. In fact, during the 16 years following the battle, the Austrian Habsburgs gradually recovered and dominated southern Hungary and Transylvania, which had been largely cleared of Turkish forces. The battle is also noted for including the largest known cavalry charge in history.

I give new art a harder time because of the resources available to Wizards now, I can enjoy the campiness of Kobolds of Kher Keep and Phil Foglio cards, maybe due partly to nostalgia.

But, cards like this are just hideous, a disgusting use of computer generated vomit that will age terribly and has no artistic value.

I started to do this and realise how depressingly stolen the Hawks are. Their units are essentially a mashup of Alpha Legion and Ravenguard.

Bloodhounds have been known to field horse-mounted scouting forces as is tradition on Karach, but more commonly they field special jump pack mounted reaver squads with breacher shields.

Warp Raiders pretty much consist entirely of unique units.

I haven't played with my "competitive" playgroup in a while because of work.
It is less of a playgroup as it is more I go to my LGS and play in the free commander tournament since it is a ten minute walk.

The Nin deck is also something I just made, no idea what the full potential is.
