I love the concept of a buff and no-nonsense tusked She-Hulk tearing through foes while wielding a great axe with a blade almost as big as two gnomes... but I'm stuck on a good background/motivation that's not just a bog-standard "brutish-wild-man/primitive-tribe-leader wanders the land all murderhobo-style" trope with "he" swapped for "she"... got some advice?

I just wanna be more creative than "write man, change anatomy"... I mean, fem orcs, much like fem dwarves, already get a bad joke rep as being overly-masculine already, I'd rather not carry-out the stereotype even further, else it'll end up something like "This bigarse bitch is Ghara, she's the closest thing this motley band's got to a woman, an' even she pisses standing up!" ...okay, that's maybe a little bit exaggerated, but you get my point.

Make a character besides "muh musclegirl fetish" which is an entirely upstanding and quality fetish, which means starting elsewhere.

What's her family like? How did she grow up? Which parent did she have a stronger bond with? Some other adult that wasn't 'family'? What's her personality like? What's her goal? What kinda guys does she like? If she's the rape-and-pillage barbarian type, how does she do it without getting knocked up?

C'mon senpai, use some imagination. You can usually find it in that lump of rock you keep between your ears.
>>

I guess I'm explaining things kinda poorly. First off, while I do have a femuscle kink, this isn't a character done for "magical realm" reasons.

I just... I dunno, it's tricky to describe; I wanna have a femorc barbarian without it just feeling I swapped M for F on the "Sex:___" line of the info chart, y'know?

I mean, despite the totally badass image accompanying my OP, almost all I can really find regarding most settings' typical clan roles for females in orc society is wisewoman stuff like shamans and healers, with all the strength-heavy duties typically being "man stuff".

I mean, hell, even D&D's Iconic Krusk, a half-orc barbarian like my not-yet-named character, is a dude.
>>
>>49571461
Women in tribal societies often take up a skilled trade such as weaving, pottery, or pretty much any creative endeavor that yields something useful and doesn't require a ton of strength. In a small tribe, particularly an orcish tribe, it's not unreasonable to think that everyone, including women and artisans, would be expected to learn how to fight. Maybe your character left her tribe to hone her craft or to learn the techniques of the soft and weak civilized folk, and finds that in places less harsh than her homeland she's considered an accomplished warrior rather than a last resort home front defender.

I think it could make for great roleplay potential to have this combat monster who actually kind of dislikes fighting and just wants to make tapestries or clothes instead. Perhaps she's even from a culture that is famed for some particular goods like their leatherworking and was just smart enough to go to a civilized place where her skills would make her a fortune?

Is this suitable for a fighting-style, got a player who wants to do unarmed fighter and doesn't want to use Monk.

Add your proficiency bonus to damage dealt with unarmed attacks.
When you hit with an unarmed attack, you may shove as a bonus action.

Between that, Battlemaster archtype and Tavern Brawler he should have plenty of options for shoving and grappling while fighting, while not falling too far behind with other fighting styles damage.

You'll be rotting inside-out, oozing pus and shit out of every orifice, racked with coughs, cramps and spasms, burning up with fever, your entire body agonizingly inflamed, every joint screaming at you at the nearest movement, your head throbbing with pain indescribable, and so on and so on waaaaay past nauseam.

It's utter hell, and the only ones who can kinda hack it are those who, mostly, manage to fool themselves into thinking they like it.

Mostly.

To be honest, I do most of my archetypes and conversions on a whim. The Hexblade in DnD 3.5 was a d10, full BAB 4/9 caster. The Hexblade archetype I made is slightly more true to that. Where a Hexcrafter Magus is more "sword-using wizard that casts hexes", the Hexblade is a "hex-using fighter that knows a little magic". You get what I mean? I don't take offense to those criticisms, but I did this more as a quick little thought experiment.
>>
So I'm doing some theorycrafting for an Occultist, and Jesus Christ Soulbound Puppet is a lot better that it first seems. Keep a bag full of animal bones handy and you can get all kinds of benefits. Off the top of my head or the text document nearby as the case may be:

+4 fucking Initiative (Hare)
+2 Fortitude (Rat)
+2 Reflex (Fox)
+2 Will (Hedgehog)
+1 Natural Armor (Turtle)
the ability to deliver verbal messages (Raven or similar)
the ability to manipulate or retrieve items at a distance (Monkey or similar, or Homunculus I guess but that lacks the minor skill bonus)

You can change these basically at-will by spending a focus point, and they come with all the normal familiar benefits too (like speaking with similar animals, though they'll likely be put-off by the fact that it's a horrid little zombie).

Since I think that quote is taken from 4e Anniversary, this should apply. I don't think they got around to printing any advanced astral travel rules in 5e but at the same time, there's been no specific retcon.

As for living earth, you're magically shaping it, it's probably enough to make it 'altered' and no longer part of the natural world. A door is a door, not a part of the hill. But I think the Concealment powers (and MAYBE spirits' abilities to shape things, if you're the type to consider spirits a part of nature rather than a construct of the human mind-- That part was all so much easier when shamans were different) could at least hold off the majority of magical snoopers. And if they don't walk right past the spirit, you're still alerted, AND the spirit is punching them in the head.

Also, you probably want to allow for holes for air, exhaust, etc. Logistically, piped in water is probably better than from a truck, but you can probably dig a well to give yourself enough to do some. It won't supply a large farm, but aeroponics can be really efficient. But the more of that you do, the more regular upkeep is required, which isn't always gonna be simple.

I mean, there's a reason we had to meet on the Dyss homeworld and not on the Shhh'trrr'lll homeworld, and that reason is human terrorism and xenophobia. what's 2nd edition ad&d like my dudes? good or bad?
69 posts and 8 images submitted.
>>
>>49549066
It's fun, as long as you don't try to use all the rules all at once. Every long-time DM has their favorite bunch of rules that they use and ignore the rest.
>>
>>49549066
It's almost interchangeable with AD&D 1st edition.
They only made the shift to dodge Gygax's royalties on the core books.

1e has compelling explanations and abysmal organization.
2e has dull explanations and you don't need to cross reference 5 pages in 2 books to learn how each thing works.
Pick your poison.

They came from a time when RPGs advertised their "high" rules count, but despite that they're actually ruleslite.

I personally think the Basic line had TSR's best products.
Rules Cyclopedia is nice, but most people swear by B/X.
>>
Good and bad.

The good: the rules are nearly the same as AD&D 1st edition, but cleaned up and streamlined. If you play 2e with all of the options "turned off" (and options include things like proficiencies/skills, individual initiative, and classes other than F/M/C/T), you have a game that is very simple and streamlined and playable, a lot like basic D&D (but with more spells, monsters, and magical items).

The bad: the one way that 2e doesn't play like 1e or 0e is the way experience is handled. In 0e and 1e, the player characters are *adventurers* seeking treasure. And so you get 1 XP for every 1 GP of treasure recovered, plus a pittance of bonus XP for monsters slain. 2e grants the bulk of XP as "story awards" for quests completed, deeds done, plot-points reached; or for actions taken that comport with your class and alignment. This latter method, "role-playing XP", is crazily subjective and difficult to keep track of, including such items as fighters getting extra XP for foes defeated, thieves getting XP for money stolen for themselves (bad idea!), and mages for learning spells, crafting items, etc.

Basically, 2e takes a very concrete kind of game award that incentivizes adventurers to do adventurer things, and it swaps it out for vague, nebulous "do whatever and win" things. Add to this the fact that the text is CONSTANTLY harping about good role-playing, being in-character, not power-gaming or meta-gaming, and you can tell that 2e was pretty much the point at which D&D finally disappeared up its own ass (the process started with Dragonlance and Unearthed Arcana in the 1e days).

And worst of all, when 3.0 came out and offered the rallying cry, "back to the dungeon!", did they go back to XP for gold? Nope; they went with the video-gamey "all XP is for winning encounters" mechanic which has been a cancerous blight on RPGs ever since.

tl;dr: Gee, thanks, Zeb; you went and ruined D&D for the rest of ever.
