You are an epic level paladin.

One of the members of your super good guy team, an epic level wizard, has helped you out many times. Saved your life, given you upgrades, even been there for your birthdays. you have relied on her/him (they are the opposite sex) more often than you can count.

you find out recently that she/he was involved in an altercation when they were a young adventurer where they were trying to help people during a crises, but since they did not have a permit to practice magic in that city, was asked by local authorities to stop immediately.

Though they agreed, the local authorities began to mock and insult her/him and provoked a fight. The fight got out of control and one of the authority figures and a few bystanders died.

the wizard was jailed, but a couple of years later, the city was about to be sacked by a conquering warlord. The guards offered the prisoners the chance to fight for their freedom. She/he refused and as a result, the city got sacked and many innocent people died. The warlord let the wizard and other prisoners go because he had no interest in them.

Sometime later, the wizard found his way into your group and has been trying to be a hero ever since, even now when you are a world saving hero group.

What actions should you take? How should Justice be met?

They already did the time for their crime and not fighting invaders isn't a willful act of evil. I do nothing.
>>
As far as I can see, there isn't any action to be taken other than removing the iron rod from your arse posthaste. I think it may be getting infected.

The broken the law of that land, and they served their time for it.

It is disappointing that they did not opt to fight, but it would be unreasonable for me to punish someone for not upholding my own moral code.

Also, I feel there is not enough information here. It largely depends on the warlord in question.
Does he inslave the people he captures? I am inclined to believe he does not, since why on earth would he free prisoners if that was teh case.

Does he simply sack the settlement and move on, or does he maintain rule over it. How is life under his rule?
If life under his rule is not that bad, and the wizard known this, then while it is not the decision I would have come to personally, I can understand why he would not fight against the warlord.

:^)

New DM, just had my first session yesterday.

Questions: How do I avoid railroading my PC's in a dungeon?

Is it okay to fumble the dice and the hp of creatures to make the fight feel more organic and cooler?
>Pitting lvl 2 characters against a Minotaur monstrosity, created out of a horse, minotaur, ooze and human and having it land 1 hit against the paladin, almost cutting him in half.
a scared 10 minutes with some fumbling in the dice and his hp later, he goes down and they audibly sigh in relief.

Hilariously fun encounters, yes or no?
> encounter bridge troll, if they kill it, the bridge troll's mother comes out from under the bridge, twice his size and with a giant rolling pin, bent on revenge.

Encounters included:
>Brownies sneaking into camp in the wee hours of the morning to cook a hot breakfast for the party by the time they woke up
>Brief rains of various odd substances, such as wine, muffins, and dresses.
>Various "fearsome critters" from American tall tales, like the hugag and fur-bearing trout
>An animate rock that followed the party around like a puppy dog (one of the players adopted it as a pet)

To name but a few.

There was also a "bargain bin" in the artificer's shop they did most of their shopping at, where he sold minor trinkets and failed experiments. Rather than presenting the players a list of the contents, I had them roll to rummage through it and told them what they found. They absolutely loved it. The one who adopted the rock ended up getting a flying handkerchief (like a tiny flying carpet) for her pet rock to fly around on, and a little top hat that displays emoticons indicating the wearers emotion on the band so she could communicate somewhat with it. Another player dug out a dozen different minor novelty items and asked to combine their effects into a single ridiculous toy, a rod that sprayed bubbles that glowed in various colors, shouted profanities, and gave joy-buzzer shocks to those they touched.

2:
Every game, every system, no matter who GMs (or DMs), our group has a consistent NPC, the wandering mushroom salesman. And every single time we get challenged to come up with a new and never used mushroom to spark another adventure or plot hook. Notable examples include:
>Floating mushrooms that reduced the user's ability to be affected by gravity ended up getting the party involved with local black markets after someone "accidentally" firebombed a random warehouse.
>Glowing mushrooms when eaten copied exactly half of the person's body to the Astral Plane, thus getting the party involved with a cove of unsual Druids.
>Striped mushrooms gave temporary invulnerability at the cost of being temporarily mind-swapped with the last person who ate a striped mushroom. Party tricked a dragon into eating one and shenanigans ensued after we lost track of who was swapped with who.

5:
>Half blind shopkeeper who's stockboy is the only competent thing keeping the store afloat
>Minor NPCs having embarassing shennanigans going on in the background if the PCs ever notice
>NPC romantic comedies going on in the background
>Had a shopkeeper that was literally a cock merchant
>One store in the poor part of a city was called "acceptable meats"
>PC made a perception check on a group of training city guards and overheard that the lesson of the day was how to detect criminal scum
>NPC trying to hire people for a fishing vessel shouting "We made lots of money catching crabs and so can you!"
>Quest board had a picture showing someone and underneath their picture stated "Talked too loud during the play"

Allright /tg/, time for some complex motives. How to do them right (still retaining the antagonist firmly as the antagonist) and how to build a pattern for them.

>What are the most complex motives your BBEG/antagonist has had?

My personal idea is to have the character's ends and ideas be valid, and maybe even have them do sincere good. But before long, they do something absolutely unforgivable toward the player characters, which starts a vendetta. Better yet if the vendetta was the plan of the antagonist all along.

Any ideas about this? I would love to get some complex motives going along in my future games, just because I love messing with my players' and characters' heads.

Hard mode: Include "Life is simply unfair" to the mix

Not an antagonist, but a player. Here was his story.
>War veteran who thrived in battle against many nonhuman kingdoms
>Descended from a long line of people who worshipped the god of law, war, and light, and were raised to be ridiculously loyal to their country.
>Met his lover, a fellow soldier, on the battlefield.
>They fall in love, of course, and eventually retire after 20 years of service, at the age of 40.
>They spend the next 35 years together, growing old, raising a family (though they had some kids in their thirties), enjoying each other's presence.
>Wife contracts a plague brought in by immigration, rumors place it as originating in nonhuman lands, but nobody really knows for sure. Nonhuman hate is common in his country.
>Wife dies. He spends next five years alone, bottling up anger that combines with war experiences to turn into full blown genocidal racism.
>Taking up his old sword, he sets out to the capital, where he immediately hunts down a cult, slays them, though one of them gets away and actually starts a full blown riot all throughout the city.
>He helps the guards in securing the city and, more importantly, the safety of the royal family.
>He gets closer to the royals by performing important duties and quests for them.
>Eventually tells them of a plan to help the country regain land lost in the wars: a magical plague to target nonhumans.
>Royal family currently deeply considering it, they're extremely talented with magic (and have secret tech for manufacturing the plague).
>It's a perfect plan on paper, because it couldn't reasonably be tracked back to the royals, it would eliminate the nonhuman threat (both the foreigners and the nonhuman toys the corrupt nobility has), and if it somehow jumps to humans they could easily pump out a cure and come out as the good guys by distributing widespread vaccines and cures.

He's a good man - when it comes to humans. Feeds the poor, aids the sick, hates the corrupt nobility. A family man.

Wait, dude's pushing 80 and still kicking butt? Doesn't osteoporosis and the ilk weigh on the elderly?

Sounds like a rather radical player character though. Didn't it bring forth problems?
>>
>>49517767
It did, he has heart problems he has to roll to survive, but it works.

He got de-aged to his prime thanks to a regenerator the royal family was hiding, though. Repaired all the damages to his body, down to genetic mutation over time, that old age brought.

It was an unexpected move from the DM - we thought it was just a generic healing pod we could use to get back to full after almost dying to some buggy security robots.

What the fuck is inspiration and how does it work?
One moment I'm full of inspiration, converting minis with my right hand and writing an RPG module with my left. Next moment at the peak of enthusiasm I find my brain as barren as a desert and can't bring myself to do anything.

And then later I'm sitting in a depression, not even thinking about hobby stuff, when out of the blue an idea for a conversion or plot hook I've been struggling with for ages suddenly appears, even though it's completely unrelated to whatever I am doing at the time, and the fucking brain is all alight again.

Why the fuck is inspiration like that? How do you force inspiration to come, or at least try to?
21 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Instead of working when the inspiration comes use the time you've got it to analyze, if you're inspired to write a horror setting for example, study horror, art, films, books, games everything and make notes on all of it, both the research and your own ideas. Then when the inspiration dies down again you have a bank of notes to work off of.
>>
>>49517543
doesn't work. my "inspiration" picture folders are growing like mushrooms in the rain when i'm actually out of inspiration and browsing through them does nothing to me.

when I'm actually in the working mood I rarely even remember about them

and all the notes and concepts are useless inspiration is off, 'cos there's nothing to make me going and even if i force myself to do stuff, it comes out stale and crappy.

Why do M/tg/ players dislike Reddit, and the /r/magictcg community? Is it because 4chan as a whole shuns Reddit, or is it because of certain opinions that they have that's different from you? Or is it because you want spoiler cards as well, but WOTC is too liberal to accept 4chan as a place to find spoilers?

I'm running a 5e game and had the group play through a modified HotDQ/RoT arc. I didn't want them to end the module at 14th level or whatever it says you should be so most of the encounters were toned down and at the end instead of fighting a dragon God they fought a magically mutated cult leader who was trying to release her into the world. They killed him and stopped the coming of the dragon queen. I doubt I'll give her a chance to return so at this point I'd say crisis averted, day saved, fun still had.

So I'm DMing for a group of people who want to get into D&D but have no idea where to start.

Due to constraints I'll only be able to host a one-shot adventure, so I was hoping you guys could help me come up with some ideas.

I was hoping to start the adventure somewhere typical like a tavern, where the group could introduce themselves and roleplay out of combat a bit to relax, and then somehow from that end up in a dungeon so they could experience actual combat and problem-solving.

Thanks in advance.

First and only bump.
>>
They all meet in a tavern. A man comes in panicked, and pleads with everyone in the bar to save his daughter, as kobolds have kidnapped her and carried her off to their fort in the forest. Design the fort around your player's abilities so they can each have shining moments of awesome.

End it either with total victory, a hook that will send them on further adventures together, or something from your magical realm.
>>
If you want my advice, I would personally start the adventure in the dungeon due to the time constraints. Get straight to the good stuff. From there, the roleplay and actions will speak out for the characters.

Now some questions:

1. Where is the dungeon located? Is it in a forest? On a mountain? Alongside a beach?

2. What was this dungeon like before its current state?

3. What resides within the dungeon now? Why are they there?

4. Are the characters premade? Are the characters being made at the table?

I want to run a military campaign where the players run a mercenary company, similar to Diamond Dogs/MSF/Outer Heaven.

What is the best system for modern military or urban combat? What is the best system to integrate base management, NPC followers (who have character while not being burdensome to use), and international politics?

I know I could just use D20 modern and make up base management, but is there a better option?

Good lord, is it really this bad?

Any other suggestions?
>>
>>49514715

Yeah, it is.

I like the gunplay in Traveller quite a bit. Haven't used it for modern stuff, but some guy on here did like a 19th century military game with it. It defaults to futuristic, but can scale back to like stone age easily. A plus is that there are pretty good rules for running a mercenary company in it.
GURPS is said to be pretty good at realistic firearm combat, too.
