I'm gonna be GMing for the first time (i've tried a few times, but now i really wanna do my best) for a group of friends in a few days - it's a generic fantasy setting.
What are some good campaign starters/hooks that can involve either all characters at the same time or separately to join them later that isn't the classic "so, you're all in a tavern" thing? I mean, it works, but I don't really want to use that one.Also any other general tips you could give me would be nice hrmhmnhgh

Total tourist trap. (Literally, they sacrifice them to Dagon). Good wi-fi at the cafes though. They turned the sanatorium into a student hostel for Miskatonic U, which is under a cloud following a recent rape scandal involving some Deep Ones and the lacrosse team.

It's a college town, mostly. Chain stores on every corner, bars at every chain, sports fields and athletic outfitters next to the bars.
They've altered the curriculum at old MU a tad after a lot of books from the library went missing about a decade ago. It's now "Miskatonic Technical University" and STEM is king. There's a small but devoted literature and liberal arts faculty, but they've been moved off the main campus to what was the old library building. They've got a whanger of a MFA program but the facilities out there are cramped. The main campus is largely devoted to physical sciences and engineering. The Miskatonic Ferals are the worst team in the Northeastern Conference, and most students aren't even aware there's a sports program, not that many of them would ever qualify.
In short, it's basically like any other East Coast technical college. No one stays longer than their undergraduate because there are so many other, better options for post-graduate education around. The teachers are isolated and lonely and the students are goal-oriented and boring - there's very little night life.
It's the perfect place to get an average education. Or to hide.

That was the 90s.
Now it's part pill slum, part run down industrial zone with contaminated soil, and part third rate university in dire funding straits with no notable sports team.
The town government is inept, bankrupt, and in the pocket of the prison and oil industries.
The Arkham Advertiser has been purchased by a Murdoch subsidiary a decade ago and only maintains a local intern for fluff pieces to sell ads to the few remaining local businesses, everything else comes from corporate, AP, or Reuters.
The cops and courts make a living off of interstate traffic with seizures and fines, keeping them busy. There's a municipal deal with an upstate privately runs prison that requires certain numbers of convicts per month to be viable.
For some reason there still exists a book store in town. It can't be the students from the university keeping it in business, no one enrolled there has money for books. And the store selection of genres curiously overlaps with the occult specialty of the Miskatonic University library, one of the few enclaves of former glory. So how it remains in business to this day is a stunning mystery and must be associated with some sinister purpose that is not for human minds to grasp.

I cannot stand this shit anymore. Thus I am trying to think of a solution. I want to keep the toughness system but I need something more bounded. No more fucking exploding dice. The game I am working on is skill-based and uses 2d6, but it's also going to use 2d6 for damage. I'm thinking a base Toughness of 8, no Shaken, simply Wounded (and thus eliminated for minor faggots) on an Toughness+ damage roll. I am figuring 2d6 + the weapon damage should work. I'm going off the idea that a rifle shot should incapacitate the average unarmored person 75% of the time. As such I think I'm probably going to give it +2 base damage for right now. Maybe more later. Maybe base Toughness will be 10. I don't know. Fuck me. I just can't take it anymore with Savage Worlds.

Yes. We all admit that shotguns are broken as all hell. The developers did not think at all when making the system. They throw around +2s in a system where you roll d6s and d10s for rolls, like it's nothing, when they are equivalent to like a +8 in d20 system. Aiming giving a +2, that I understand, there's a huge likelihood of hitting if you have time to aim rather than just shooting off what you can without getting hit. But shotguns giving a flat +2 is the most autistic shit ever. Same with 3 round burst. And scopes. The game stacks +2 modifiers like there is no fucking tomorrow. It is broken at the core. The exploding dice system is also the devs' cue to make everything fucktarded because they don't have to worry about boundaries anymore.
Shotgun damage is also broken as hell. 3d6/2d6/1d6 at the different ranges, which is fine and cute and neat but the exploding dice makes them massively OP. 2d8 for a rifle and 3d6 for a shotgun are not the same fucking thing.

I know romantic/sexual themes in an rpg can be a touchy subject, but I do think there is some merit to allowing a minimal amount of them into a game. Sexuality is an important aspect of human nature, and ignoring it entirely can make the world seem sterile.
I have a few rules regarding how I like to handle these situations when I GM.
1: Cut the scene as soon as the seduction is certain
2: Fade to black, decide on which stat the target NPC prioritizes with their lovers and how hard they are to please, roll for efficacy
3: Sum up the final outcome vaguely, "they seem to have had a good time" or "they seem simultaneously amused and disappointed".
4: Factor the result into future interactions, if things went well you get a small social bonus, if things went poorly they may prefer to avoid you. One could have positive and negative consequences, an NPC might be hostile to you in public but favorable in private conversation if they are afraid of social repercussions.
I feel like an approach like this allows an extra layer of drama while keeping things relatively appropriate.

It can be one shotted by a meltagun, it can't carry a Warboss and his retune, and it's just slightly under the price of a Knight for a shitty version. IMO, just use the renegade Knight rules for it.
