Every year I throw a Halloween LARP/party where theres sort of an ongoing story and game.

This year we got access to a lake house in the Poconos and Im running a 1960s crime game.

The story is we're all part of a crew that just barely got away with a high stakes heist. Our lookout got killed and the police are looking for us so we're lying low in this house in the middle of nowhere. Crooks being crooks everyone has an angle. I'm trying to play up the paranoia element.

Im still working out game mechanics and flow of the evening and I was wondering if any of you had any advice. Here's what I've got so far.


I've given each person a "secret" and a "task"

For example. Someone is an undercover Fed. And I've tasked them with collecting evidence. So they'll be recording conversations. Finger prints on the stolen goods. (which will represented by costume jewelry and poker chips).

I always encourage gambling and other bets throughout the night during these parties. Our group loves a good game of poker both in and out of character.

Someone else has a gambling addiction and will be slipping out into the kitchen and use the landline to make call to his bookie throughout the night (a defunct google voice account I have set aside) and will push to place bets throughout the night whenever he can. This one is mostly innocuous but its shifty enough that it will make the other players uncomfortable.


I'm struggling with a conflict mechanic. I still want this to be a party as much as it is a LARP. I was thinking of maybe setting things up so everything comes to a crescendo with a nerf gun shootout in the middle of the night. All of the guests will be staying the night because its a hell of a drive and they'll probably be hammered.

Any suggestions?

A nerf shootout sounds baller, but if there's only one fed on a "team" by himself, wouldn't physical conflict resolution be kinda one-sided? Maybe everyone will be too drunk to be salty by then, but that poor dude is just gonna get bodied by a sea of foam darts

Have a violin case with a nerf rifle in it in clear view.

As tensions go up there is nothing stopping anyone from taking the gun to shoot a supsected fed.

It'll make things more nervous.

Though what you can do is have 4 friends who arent going to the party dress in police gear and "Search the Area" Forcing them all to scramble to hide evidence away and hid in the secret room in the basement while boots stomp over head and tear the place into easily cleaned up shreds.

Did nobody realize that the implications of this class were horrifying? First, it's not a good prestige class. Second, it's not even a really playable class, since it's naturally solitary.

Third, any prestige class where being raped can take away your levels is not a good idea. Technically speaking, the other option is not much better: You can give up all your class levels to be someone else's waifu, or you can only fuck women.

I'm reading through the Book of Exalted Deeds, and I'm laughing as I go. What were they thinking? Why didn't someone stop them?

Would Humans really have any chance at survival in a fantasy setting? I think we'd by outclassed by other races in almost anything we do.

So, Warhammer: Vermintide launches on consoles tomorrow.

I never played it on the PC because I use laptops and it is always shitty for gaming.

For the PCbros who played it, how is it?

I am a big Warhammer (fantasy not 40k amazingly enough) and the skaven are some of my favorite villains. I never got into L4D because of the PC issue mentioned previously and not supporting the brick-factory that was Xbox 360 back when it launched on that console.

Is it fun? Is it stupid? Is it worth $40 with everything I mentioned?

Yeah, actually. One of the better co-op games in the past few years.

Absolutely. You are fantasy characters mowing down giant rat-men who use gatling guns and shit. It is Warhammer, which makes it amazingly stupid in a great way.

Meh. It has a good chunk of maps (18 with all the DLC) and they play well enough for the most part, but there is literally only one gameplay type and it can be pretty damn tough on some stages even if your crew has their shit together.

I would say $20 is a definite buy, but $40 is a bit much for something so reliant on having a good group of players to make the most out of it. You also better like grinding. Fun grinding, but grinding none the less.

Should I make sure my players succeed no What, or should I let them keep failing until they figure out how to work together and learn the true meaning of friendship?

On the one hand, I get that it's the GM's job to facilitate fun, and I kind of get the feeling that they're not smart enough to be able to work together, and will just get frustrated.

On the other hand, I'm getting a little sick of running Crabs and Buckets 5e every week. Wut do?

Are you sick of it to the point where running it is a chore? If yes, dismantle the game politely. If not, proceed reading.

I'd say you start having some random NPCs drop some not-that-subtle hints about teamwork, failing that having them provide some little help, failing that start having hints more obvious than a neon sign saying "work together you wankers."
But don't degrade your game to kid mode "everyone wins by doing nothing!" garbage. Unless your players are kids, obviously.

a) Don't do DnD. It's a railroady game. Unless you want powerlevel combat encounters and not much else, the game will be frustrating no matter what. At best you can play in spite of the rules, and then why not just use mechanics that work for you?

b) Provide hooks and incentives that facilitate the kind of game you want to play. Encourage your players with story elements. Teach them how to use the rules with tutorial missions. Take the time to go through the tactics of combat step by step. Have them see another group use successful tactics. Have a veteran NPC teach them the tricks. The trick to avoid a didactic tone is to present even basic functionalities of the mechanics as expert lore and thereby raise the sense of achievement.

No game ever runs perfectly. It is always a gradient and on many different scales. As the GM it's your job to recognize where the group is at and then take it from there. The only measure of success is the people in the room and their game experience, there won't be a test and nobody will grade your adherence to a formula.

So I was reading the Eclipse Phase Rulebook, and noticed that the writers suggest using increments of five for abilities and skills, and a lot of derivative stats are calculated by dividing an ability score by five. Would it not be easier then to just use scores on a 1-20 scale and d20 instead of 1-100 scale and d100?
What is about 1-100 scale that make it so attractive to people?

1-100 is not the same as 1-12, even in increments of 5.

I think it's because d100% is more intuitive, because the numbers are exactly what they represent. It's true that GMs of d100 games rarely or never use increments lower than 5, but a 65% tells you exactly what it is.

On a sidenote: Looking back at the games I've played or watched, rolling anything but over 10, 15 or 20 rarely comes up if not directly dictated by the rules. Is it just me, or do GMs heavily gravitate towards those numbers and barely use those in between?

What are some good reasons for a human society to go down the path of total anonymity, guys? My current reasoning is that a very destructive plague or similar struck a colony generations ago which cysts in the ground and can break out again and infect through skin contact, so people wear their environmental suits almost everywhere. Despite the plague being very rare (possibly even being extinct by the time of the campaign) the suits entered into culture and tradition and became a fashion statement in their own right.

Possibly a bioengineered plague introduced by terrorists or alien aggressors. Or hell, as retaliation.

I realize there's some pitfalls with such a society, but I think it would also be very interesting to see the dehumanizing effect it might have.
