I'm working on a dungeon for a campaign I'm writing for some friends, and the dungeon will have four branching elemental paths, each blocked by a riddle-locked door. I've got a riddle for Fire, Water, and Earth, but I need help coming up with one for Air. All the riddles based on air that I've been able to find are either so stupidly childish or fiendishly tricky that they're of no use to me.

I'd appreciate any help /tg/ could offer.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not looking for the answer to actually be "air". Just something air-related. Wind, breath, air, sky, etc.

Earth Riddle: What runs around a city, but never moves? (A wall)

Fire Riddle: Iron roof, glass wals, burns and burns, and never falls? (A lantern)

Water Riddle: I always runs but never walk, often murmur, never talk, have a bed but never sleep, have a mouth but never eat. Who am I? (A river)

No MtG general thread up. Thought I would make one.

Also wondering, fa/tg/uys, I am playing Bant Aggro, but I only have one Looter Scooter. What is the best thing to replace this missing three with? The inferior Sky Skiff? Duskwatch Recruiters? Spell Quellers? Selfless Spirits? Maybe a Thalia to slow down the enemy Smuggler Copters that Im sure will be played?

Fascist Black Lagoon, and they're the good guys

Song of Swords is a realistic fantasy tabletop RPG that draws inspiration from historical fechtbuchs, weapons and armor. Its combat system is fast and it can be used for both fantasy and historical/mundane settings. Inevitably, you will always have that one gay ass zell in the party everyone works together to kill.

Call of the Void is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.

Here's a MEGA folder with the newest version of the rules as well as all related current working documents. At this time the latest version is v1.9.9:

Jimmy has posted a bit about the premade characters for Ballads introductory campaign

>Nyashny Enginsdottir carries a Weissenschwert and her twin Liberators.
>Ivan Sistene carries a Volksverteidiger and a Ritterschwert.
>Kane carries a Wellington Over-Under and a Norminster.
>Silas Black carries six revolvers of various caliber and design.

At least I think that's what's meant with the BL reference.

Also, people who complain that they don't fit the setting are missing the point.

It's not grimdark enough for every side to be ancient and awful. There's gotta be a group of idealists, too young as a race to have been broken by the harsh realities of the void, fresh-faced and overconfident. It's a toss-up whether they'll last long enough for internal corruption to turn their society into a cynical hellhole, or just get wiped out, eaten, or enslaved by an older, meaner, and larger group. But either way, they're fucking doomed. And it's beautiful.

>Items that allow a character to change from one class to another after a long rest

ie., a magical hat that allows a 5th level rogue to take a long rest, and at the end they're a 5th level wizard with +4 int and -4 (stat of the players choice). Essentially, allowing a player to try out different classes while using the same character and not interrupting the story.

Good idea?

Maybe in a very Final Fantasy or other JRPG feeling game. It just seems like it'd slow things down to me.
>>
>>49680329
Sounds like your characters "class" has nothing to do with their character and has no actual meaning in-universe. Did they apprentice for. Decade under grandmaster Twizzlebeard at the mages college in order to become a wizard, or did they just decide at the start of the adventure, "I'm a wizard now, lol."
>>
It could be explained as the magic pulling another version of the character from an alternate universe.

It would require you to essentially create a second character. The player would have to be prepared for it. I wouldn't make it as simple as "I put on my magic hat, I am a ranger now", but a one time thing, like a boon from a God of Fate or something.

Sup /tg/, Im sick and tired of Pathfinder, mainly because it is sort of a jack of all trades master of none, and my players are too...unfocused to keep track of all their bonuses.

So, in classic /tg/ fashion, Im going to try to create a new fantasy pen and paper roleplaying system! However, Ive done this sort of thing in the past and on here seemed to think I was doing a very good job, so I figured Id put up a thread and ask a simple question:

What is you favorite fantasy RP system, and, in as much detail as you can muster, why?

Also, if you have some kind of morbid pity for me, and think you know of a more perfect system that has somehow escaped my notice for 20+ years, feel free to make a suggestion.

>it is sort of a jack of all trades master of none
No. It is a powerlevel encounter combat system that railroads heavily and has room for little else.

>Im going to try to create a new fantasy pen and paper roleplaying system!
That's pointless. Enjoy.

Read Reign, Burning Wheel, and Dungeon World. Never mind the fluff but pay attention to mechanism design. Understand those and maybe Runequest, and explain why in the seven hells we'd need a new system?
>>
>>49682102
Fpbp.

OP, it's 2016. There's hundreds of games out there. Make up your mind and decide what you want from the game, and you'll find half a dozen systems fit for your needs.
But first of all, you have to unlearn pathfinder.
>>
>>49679719
Figure out what you like about gaming. What's the aspect you guys have the most fun with, on the rules-side?

Dungeon crawling? Combat? Character progression through levels of power? Loot collecting? Using spells in new ways? Base-constructing? Magical lore? Maybe performing survival skills or "social combat."

Figure out what you enjoy the most, mechanically. Now find the system that handles that part of it the best. If you can't? Fine, make your own. But you won't have it playtested, and you'll be able to find something else that is, so don't make your own just for the sake of it.

Okay /tg/, imagine the next situation.
In order to achieve your goal you have to sign a deal with the devil (Or with the equivalent of devil that can sign deals) in the setting of your choice (It doesn't necessarily needs to be high fantasy). To legitimize your deal you have to negotiate a specific conditions that need to be satisfied either before or after you will gain the object of your deal.
Now here is the interesting part. What conditions, loopholes, course of action will you choose that will meet the requirements of deal without you or your party sacrificing anything significant and doing anything amoral/wicked as a result?
Bonus points if you can come up with a plan that will not rely too much on usage of specific elements unique to one system or setting (Spells, artifacts, entities, etc).
TL;DR Drop your ideas on how to trick the devil in a deal.

Isn't that the trick tough? that the demon is old and knows 100+ ways to fuck the deal up?

assuming the devil wants you soul and isn't a complete retard who would fall to the most basic snafus and accept rigged deals.

Well without getting too specific.

The deal if fulfilled when i achieve x by means i think acceptable then you do you if you mess with me or anything about this is influenced in a way i find not acceptable you dun goofed.

Or you know old school trapping the devil (demon) with solomon's (many) tricks.

prepare to be assblasted if you fuck something up tough.

If you give me some more guidelines and how these things work i could try to adjust some shit

Hey /tg/. I'm writing a setting and need some help justifying a mechanic my players wanted

>sci-fi setting
>players want night time to be dangerous like Pikmin and its nocturnal predators
>possibly considering a reason for the atmosphere to become poisonous to humans during the night time

Kind of a weird premise but I've got two ideas so far

>massive plants on this alien planet absorb the harmful gases in the atmosphere and "exhale" them back out during the night when the sun is out.
>the planet itself, through massive fissures in the surface or something, releases deadly gases at night. When daylight hits it, the light somehow renders it inert and safe to breathe

The change in atmosphere could also justify an entirely new ecosystem during the night as new flora and fauna surface to do their business. How does it sound?

World building general I guess. Would hate to let a thread go to waste for a single question.

I can't help you for noctuneal preditors, but if it's sci fi, why not set it off world? A thin atmosphere would make it very hard to go outside without a suit on- it would get too cold.

The premise was that players would operate during the day and retreat from the planet entirely when night time came. Players are equipped with low-end power suits by default that help protect against the brunt of temperature effects. They also enable them to venture during the night time atmosphere but the threat of having their power suit's airtight seal compromised (ex a creature tears it open) and the general nature of night time predators heavily persuade people to get the fuck outta dodge.

Additionally, those who can't afford a power suit just generally can't traverse the night time, making night hours a death sentence to them. That wouldn't necessarily apply to players but it would for NPCs and whatnot.

I'm just kinda brain storming how to somewhat justify an entire atmosphere changing in a few hours
>>
>>49678718
Yes, you could base ecosystem on that. Hell could do both poison and megapredators.

Just make it that there is some gas that floats high in the atmosphere when it's heated by the sun, it undergoes chemical reactions storing the energy; during the night time, it cools down and descends to the surface, megafauna uses it's accumulated high energy density to manage their active phase. They retreat to thermal vents/geysers during the day where the heat and expulsions from the depths maintain the air energetic enough for them to rest and to be able to slap a bitch if something intrudes.

As active as it is, the gas is corrosive as hell, so they need to have special toughened up shelters to even hide in during the night.

This could also open some ways for them, for example they figure out a chemical that could react with the gas, catalysing it into an explosion, freeing the local area for a short while.

The organizer of a local convention that will happen in a week is asking for gamemasters, apparently there's a lack of them (but not players, there are always players).

I have a lot of questions, guys:

>I kinda want to GM a Fate-based game with a ton of homebrew I made myself which is still not fully tested; is this okay?
>I am super anxious at the sole thought of having to do this and being judged and criticized, what do I do? Do I go at the risk of having some sort of panic attack or probably not delivering a top-notch experience?
>My first experience on rpgs at conventions was a couple of weeks ago, and I hated it that nobody kept in touch with anybody else after the game, everyone went their own way. Is this common?

Help?

No, it means based on Fate Core, a narrative roleplaying system that's widely hated here for having a different approach to rpgs.

Hey /tg/, I've got a request here.

A while back, someone posted this pdf of, what I think was, a fairly serious pdf containing information on how to "cast spells" or be magic or something along those lines.

The artwork was colorful and funny; I think there was something about making a tulpa in there. I think I can recall it referring to the human mind as "software" at a few points.

I remember that it was written by someone who referred to themselves as an "arch-heretic", or something equally ridiculous.

At the last page, there was a guy praying to a statue about spiders or something, saying that "those rare amiibos won't pay for themselves".

If you could help me out, that would be wicked - I can't find this shit anywhere, and I have a character that would greatly benefit from some of the occult nonsense.

I sure had a lot more of these before I had to get a new laptop.

Used to have tons of this shit.

Has anyone willingly let their character get beat up because of roleplaying? I dont mean getting bullied but I mean getting your character beaten because in their mindset, fighting back means risking the law and get your party arrested or fighting back will rile the town more because of your presence hence letting the angry locals beat you up and dump you somewhere is a far better option than fighting/killing them.
If you are a gm and your player pulled this stunt, what will you do afterwards or how do you approach the situation that happened?

Yeah. In an all-Evil game, we were destroying a village. I was confronted by a farmboy with a pitchfork, trying to protect his sister. I looked at him, went - "You got balls, kid. I'll give you one shot."

He stabbed me in the throat with his pitchfork, a karmic end to my life of pointless violence...

Oh wait. I had my once-a-day Stoneskin on when we attacked the village. I smiled at the trembling boy and cut him in half, then stabbed his sister.

The thing about being Evil is that the meaner, more petty evil can be a blast. Boy was the GM pissed about his big character moment being ruined by game mechanics.

I'm thinking about changing type of narration for my games.
What is most common way GM's go about describing scenes and environment in your group?

Do you keep it simple and show only what PC's can see around themselves (because it is their job to keep up with what's going around) or do you present scene as a whole, including that how players look in it (because of integrity of entire scene)?

Usually, I kept it simple and described stuff that only their characters could see or notice.
>Upon walking into an alley, you notice a dead body. It was only until moment later when squad of local guardsmen showed up, ordering you to lay down your arms.

However, nowadays I’m thinking about changing it to more narrator like presentation, leaving their PC's as parts of a scene rather than centers of it.
>As your group makes a turn for a nearby alley, they soon stumble upon a sight of fresh corpse laying on the road. Sounds of ruckus following behind you, revealed itself to be a squad of town guard, who didn't seem all too cheerful about what they were seeing. A group of bloodstained, tired adventurers, who recently cleared a den of goblins, now stood above a corpse. Guided by their training, they pointed weapons at you and ordered to lay down your arms.

I don't think I ever get more than two sentences in before players start talking. Which is fine, I just make sure the important stuff is in the first sentence.

So more the first style I guess. If players are interested they'll ask/investigate.

If you want to write a novel do that.
>>
>>49678905
Point. Lengthy descriptions wouldn't work that well.

However, I thought about it being more focused on details, as to why NPC's see players the way they do.
>You are covered in blood and standing over a corpse. The guards do not like what they are seeing.

Hm, informing players about their status and possible causes of current circumstances would be helping or ruining the immersion?
>>
>>49678996
Depends. I usually give descriptions of the kind:
>You are covered in blood and standing over a corpse. The guards have locked their gazes on you, their hands gripping the handles of their seathed weapons.

It conveys the same meaning, but makes the scene more visual.

3.5 (and 4e) is at odds with the general feeling of D&D.

That's why Eberron was made for it. Because the way the rules work, the prevalence of magic in PCs necessitates that the world itself is more magical.
