The wizard ended up hoisting himself by his own petard because his archrival (who killed his master) set him up.
Basically, the wizard made a series of grave mistakes out of pride I had banked on happening because I knew how to read the player, and he ended up in Hell down to his last two spell slots (both below 3) while said archnemesis was at full.

I inverse ninja law'd an encounter where the party had to escape a ship that they had just blown up.

One of the better sessions, since the environment was just as much of a mutual enemy with masts falling and random gunpowder barrels exploding and rolling up and down the ship as the actual enemies.

About $120 each for Blood Rage and High Heavens. Pandemic and expansions would account for more (especially including Legacy) but most expansions were bought by friends.

My friends want me to run a game online instead of locally for ease of transport and other issues that came to our local meetings.

Problem is, I've never run a game through this. What are the most important things to running a game successfully through Roll20? Any essential tutorial videos, tips, or tricks are appreciated!
24 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Tip 1

Dont. It will kill your gaming group. Online game is shitty and never ever feels right especially if youre used to playing in person.

My suggestion is that your group make the effort to play in person. And if that is absolutely not an option than play a system that lets you do theater of the mind so you can just play verbally over skype or something.

Roll20 is shit.
>>
>>50429966
They're a pretty visual based group that really requires that kind of stimuli. My players are good, but the easily distracted type. By putting effort into the maps, tokens, etc I can keep them tethered and not swiping through their phones every other minute.

As for playing locally, I obviously would were we not running into too many issues regarding actually getting people all together physically. Transportation has become an increasing issue and so online is just easier for all of us.

That's why we all agreed on Roll20 in the first place.
>>
Don't listen to >>50429966 OP, that anon's just an idiot who doesn't believe in different types of fun.

For running a good game on Roll20, the biggest thing is actually knowing how it works. Take your time, read through the wiki, and mark down any helpful commands. The second most important thing after that is preparedness. Have all your lighting/fog of war finished, have all your tokens in place and statted, and hop into the game early to double check that everything is prepared and on the correct layer before the game starts.

Such a golden oldie! 'twas probably 15 years since I last played though...

So weird thought. At what point in a fantasy setting would the line for cannibalism be drawn? I mean obviously a human eating a human is cannibalism, and I think a lot of folks would say a human eating an elf or a dwarf or vise versa is still cannibalism (despite probably not technically being it by our rules).

However is a human eating say a lizardfolk or an orc cannibalism? What if the lizardfolk or orc ate the human?
Would eating a demon be cannibalism?

If the line is being drawn at sentient beings would eating a dragon be cannibalism? Would a dragon eating you be cannibalism?

>>
If it a) walks on two legs and b) speaks a language you could theoretically understand and c) isn't some kind of elemental/magical construct, it's cannibalism. A is kinda up for debate, but I think it's a little more intuitive for most people.
>>
without seriously considering it, I suppose I'd adopted dwarf fortress's definition of cannibalism
>EAT_SAPIENT_OTHER:UNTHINKABLE
>>
>>50426696
Cannibalism is the same as in the real world, consumption of members of your own species. Unlike definitions such as murder cannibalism is something that can already be extended to nonhumans (a dog eating a dog is cannibalistic. A dog eating a cat isn't, even though they have comparable intelligence.)

On a semi-related note, anything sapient can be murdered. Anything nonsapient can only be slaughtered.

I need to create about 7 more possible DMPCs for the party to recruit for their excursion into the base of the current story's villain.

They decided to go and recruit as much help as they can, and unless I can find temporary players, I'm going to have to play them all.

Right now I have an Elven Slayer focused on using a Curved Sword, a gunslinger with a multitude of weapons, and a Tattooed Sorcerer. Any other ideas that, at level 4, could create some interesting characters I could hand off to temporary players if possible?

How do you fat/tg/uys and ca/tg/irls feel about taking bits from other media and working them into your campaign settings? Like if you discovered your DM sourced a villain from her favorite JRPG, or your GM inserted a blatant rip of of Rohan into his campaign world? How would you react and why?

How does original world building begin? I don't see how my players can connect with the world unless I give them something they're already familiar with. Writing pages and pages of new lore they wont even read sounds bad, too.

I will post some scenery for you all.

>Then I get burned out and don't want to play anymore

No shit.
Here's an old GM trick.
Prepare the bare minimum adventure material or use an adventure module.

IMPROVISE THE REST.

No one benefits if you are only using a small percentage of your prepared material.
>>
I'll suggest to you what I should have done years ago: run a beginner module for your game. Not just any old one, but one specifically made to be easy to DM for. I recently ran Lost Mines of Phandelver for my group who've been playing 5e since it came out, and learned a ton about how to prep and what's important/what's not.

As the title implies, what's the best puzzle you've either had brought down on you as a player, or presented your players?

One of my favorites I've seen was actually in a podcast. There was a series of lockers set to explode unless a certain order of timecards were punched in. Said time cards were an A-Z series of miner names, so it spelled out a message where no letters repeated.

I think a good puzzle should be easy to whittle down the boundaries of how it's solved, and maybe have one or two relevant skill checks in place to give players hints on what to do. If all else fails, you could probably stick an NPC with them for additional guidance.

>riddles
I'm shit at writing riddles, and there are very few scenarios where they don't feel pretty forced.

>puzzles
I prefer a sort of Zelda approach. Either there's a gimmick to the dungeon that can be manipulated to do stuff (most of it optional) or there's a big dumb obstacle that the party needs to find and apply a solution to.

I might go for a logic puzzle for a big dumb obstacle, with clues distributed around the dungeon. But I'm not sure how to write a logic puzzle, and I'm worried I'd either have to railroad the party into getting all the clues or leave too many redundant clues for it to work as a puzzle if they found them all. That and the party might not even pick up on the puzzle being a puzzle, might assume the puzzle has to be solved immediately... there's just so much that can go wrong.

New batch of questions for you guys who know a lot about Warhammer lore. Keep bias to a minimum if possible.

1. Since I've now confirmed the Golden Throne is failing I'd like to get your opinions on where the Emperor stored the blueprints for it. I briefly mentioned they could be hidden in the Mars vaults so here is my question; Could they actually be hidden in the vaults on Mars and if they have been why would the Emperor order them sealed with the Blueprints inside?

2. Why are the relationships between the Imperium and the various Chapters of Space Marines so strained?

3. Why does the Imperium outright refuse to negotiate on any level with the Eldar? They do share similar levels of technology and both fight against the same enemies but rarely themselves. (Yes I'm aware it is considered heresy by the Imperium but I'd like to understand why.)

[Special Grey Knight Question time]

4. There have been several hints that the Grey Knights (single most secret organization there is) have their OWN secret sect of Knights within their chapter who supposedly guard Chaos 'relics'. Can anyone enlighten me this subject or give me information about this secret - secret group.

5. Finally, why are there so few Grey Knights trained in general? All in all they are still human and share virtually every physical and mental property as any other space marine with the only difference being training. Both types of training have a high mortality rate but what exactly makes them so special.

No idea where the big E hid the blueprints. I'd imagine that they'd be in the hands of the mechanicus. Like most blueprints from millenia ago though, they're practically impossible to understand. Did he even use blueprints or did he just do it in one?

>2
Depends on the chapter. And I think you mean Inquisition, right? Because all Space Marines are part of the Imperium so it's hard to have a strained relationship with yourself. Some view the Inquisition as a bit restraining and not actually doing the right thing by not helping civilians (See Salamanders, Space Wolves), which isn't entirely wrong
>3
They're xenos.
>4
I've never heard of this until now. Has there been another GK codex? Last I played was in the reboot and I'm pretty sure it had no mention of this there.
>5
Physically they share similarities with other space marines but the mental property of a Grey Knight far surpasses that of even a Space Marine. The GK are all psykers, which is a rarity in 40k despite the massive population. Then those psykers are forced into one of the worst selection exercises ever. I think the aforementioned codex put the odds of an aspirant actually becoming a GK without being killed/kicked out/turned into a servitor at about a million to one. And to be a part of that million, you'd have to be a psyker on a black ship, selected as one of millions on it. So you'd be a one in a million of a million of a million to be a Grey Knight.

tl;dr

No one knows. Everything is true. 40k is dumb as hell but that's why we love it.
