Whar do Generic RP systems excell at. How do you use them comapred to thematic/setting/narrative based systems. Not saying one is better than the other but in what scenarios is using one over the other appropriate?

>I learn GURPS
>GURPS has rules capable of running anything from firefly to warhammer vermintide, to cyberpunk, to inyuyasha, to dragonball Z, to WW4, to alt history X, to DnD, to whatever, because it has all encompasing balanced rules that can be plugged in at the drop of a hat, or removed at a whim without effecting the grand scale of play
>why would I use any other system at this point?
>>
>>50442597
Generic RP systems have 3 main purposes in my mind
1- you've come up with a setting of your own that doesn't fit into other stuff.

2- your group likes playing a lot of different games and genres, but doesn't want to learn 500 different systems. If your group has actual lives with limited free time and aren't a bunch of neet fa/tg/uys, this advantage is not to be underestimated.

3- superheroes or any other setting where the party is a diverse bunch with weird powers but you want some semblance of balance

>it can do anything, it just can't do anything well
>it's a bland, awkward system that I can't convince anyone to play with me

How do you deal with unlucky players?

I don't mean rolling a 1 sometimes, I mean people who just can never get a break, when it comes to rolls you expect them to fail.

What is best? just shrug it off and tell them "better luck next time", or cut them some slack and give them another chance?

Sometimes weird shit happens anon

>have one player who consistently rolls absurdly well
>rolls aren't fudged
>dice aren't weighted
>due to medical reasons it's highly unlikely that they're rigging the throw itself
>pattern persists across multiple games, to the point where one of the GMs in our group could calculate an average handicap for them

Tavern Tales has 3d20-pick-average system. Maybe something like that could circumvent the curse.

How does this religion sound? Afraid it is a little too edgy.

>In the beginning, humans were primitive beasts*.
>Then Ahras(The God) gave them the fire and helps them develop their civilization.
>In the heart people were still beasts*. That is why Ahras gave them laws.
>To break a law is to surrender to the inner beast.

Beast = greedy, selfish, chaotic, wild etc

That's not a religion. That's an origin story

What's the codified set of beliefs and rituals surrounding this tale? Religion is a specific word you're using. Have specifics.
>>
>>50436042
Bump. I will answer soon
>>
>>50435920
Agreeing with the other anon, that's only the origin myth.

It's also the exact same thing I used for a setting with different labels on it.

What I had was men being born of darkness, mindless beasts ruled by instincts. Then the gods gave them light, making them sentient creatures. Humans served the gods for a long time, but in the end rebelled and drove the gods away(at least from the small bit where the story took place). Now without the gods, men was caught in the struggle between light and darkness.

What's interesting is how different cultures came to interpret that origin. The more fanatical sorts believe that this live is only a test and one must purge one self and others of darkness in order to join the gods in paradise.

A collection of outcasts and lowlifes on the otherh and embrace the darkness as man's true nature, some monk-ish types see it as neccesary to attain mastery over one self, both virtues and vices.

Another culture alltogether considers it impossible for man to ever be a thing of light, but that to fall to darkness would be to forsake everything that makes us different from common beasts. Thus man are born like a flame, to struggle for each moment of their life and carve their own piece of eternity. Some take that philosophy further to whorship the dragons, the beings of fire and their endless cycle of death and rebirth.

Go think what the people of your world do with the knowledge of their origin, think how normal things like lying change their meaning with this knowledge. When you got that sorted out you can move on to symbol, rituals, mythology and all that other stuff.

Because we all could use something different in our settings. I'll start;

>The harvesting of alien organs to surgically put into other lifeforms as a method of biological improvement.
>A strange treasure somewhere in the universe that has been around since the dawn of civilization itself.
>The offspring of Humans and elves having a high affinity for fire magic (or just being made of fire.)

I have others, but I'll put them in latter.

>Players' only ever response to enemies and threats of any sort is witty one liners and quips
Haha nice one dudes real sick burns. I guess I should just stop putting effort into making opponents anything other than faceless stat blocks if you can't bear your characters to ever come across as anything other than constantly calm, cool and collected bad asses. God forbid they have any fear at all or ever feel pain or take a dangerous encounter seriously.

Your villains are badly written/played if your players aren't taking them seriously. It's your own fault.

Also, show, don't tell. Dispense with the threats and make your bad guy actually do something.

I've been toying with these guys for a while.

Carcian 112th Legion get it? because they're cancer
An imperial colony world way out in the the middle of nowhere who got cut off from imperial aid when everything went to shit, and then never got re-connected to the imperium due to a combination of necron interference and weird warp shit happening around them for a long, long time. Without an influx of people with the knowledge on how to actually do stuff like fix spaceships and repair mechanical infrastructure, the shitty mostly desert hive world of Carcia had a societal collapse into crime and banditry, and then a societal un-collapse when a retired punk as fuck guardsman rallied up a millitia of gangers and literally berated them into acting like a functioning civilization. They end up barely jury-rigging functioning interplanetary flight and checking in on the various other planets in the system, who have all also devolved into various forms of feudalism and anarchy. They then berate the everloving shit out of them mid firefight until they surrender, and add their jury-rigging prowess into new and exciting methods of government and warfare.

Fast forward a good few millennia later and the various warp fuckery preventing leaving the system has finally stopped. The imperium finds an oddly functioning federation of planets under what is basically the military leadership of the imperial guard, and are almost unilaterally composed of angry criminals. They take to being guardsmen like a particularly surly duck to water.

This was pretty much just and excuse for me to make tank girl into a guard regiment.

We all know the traditional 4 element theme for magic. What are some underused "elements"?
Metal, wood, and lightning are also pretty obvious.

For real street cred, come up with an unusual, novel, or interesting elemental theory.
I propose this for a funky post apocalyptic wastelands fantasy;

Scrap, Dirt, Fuel, Smog, Flesh, Acid, Volt, and Rads.

Like with classical 4, people believe everything is made of a mixture of these elements.

A few notes,

>Scrap is mostly metals, but can include plastics and rubber.

>Dirt is any polluted earth or filth, unpolluted earth is called "soil" and isn't believed to be the natural state of dirt.

>Fuel is liquid fuels like gasoline or oil, but sometimes includes "pure" fuel-less fire.

>Flesh usually refers to dead flesh when magic is involved. Benevolent magic with living flesh doesn't exist, in order to prevent magical healing. Flesh also includes anything like bone or nails.

>Acid includes water, but like Dirt, there is almost no unpolluted water. A pool of any very toxic liquid is usually called "acid" because if you touch it, you get "burned", regardless of it's actual PH level, or chemical composition. Also includes piss.

>Rads, or radiation is rare-ish and sort of like the "fifth element". It's more mysterious because it's mostly invisible, and can do things like make your skin burn, make things glow, create volts, melt scrap, react with acid, or mutate flesh.

Reposting from the other thread because it's about to die.

Alright I was hoping that someone here might have some ideas about a game I'm running.

tl;dr warlock player's patron isn't who they think they are. What do?

So, I'm running Out of the Abyss and one player is a warlock of Asmodeus. Over the course of the game I've been hinting that something is wrong with Asmodeus and his presence seems closer than usual. The reason for this is that the demon lord Fraz'Urbluu is actually pretending to be Asmodeus. I thought this could be cool because it'll be a surprise when they find out, and there's no harm done.

So, the problem is that I don't know how/when to reveal it to the player. Soon, they will be going to Mantol-Derith soon, and this is where the demon lord has formed his new domain.

Does anyone have any ideas about a fun way to deal with this? How would you like to find out as a player? Is there a way that I can delay him finding out till later?

Thanks!

FAQ:
>What the fuck is this?
Somewhat a campaign of crack-infused free-form roleplay in the grim darkness of the far future.

>When do you guys make these threads?
Usually mondays at 4PM GMT, but they sometimes extend to Tuesdays if we got caught in the middle of something when the thread died and it was too late to make another one the same day.

>Can I join in?
Sure, just think of a character and have fun, you can find most info in 1d4chan albeit it's ussually a little bit out of date in comparison to where the threads are.

>Is there any requirement in character creation.
Not really, we've had Xeno infiltrators, Chaos infiltrators, Villains, Heroes, Normal Guardsmen, Crazed Guardsmen, Assassins, Psykers, Space Marines, Inquisitors, Squats... just think whathever and join the fun.

>Is it allowed to have more than a single character?
Yes as long as you don't use it to powerplay.

>So how you guys do the playan'?
We tend to use spoilers for OOC chat, but nothing is set in stone.
We tend to use greentexts for describing a character's actions, but again nothing is set in stone.
Use d20s for combat checks and d100s for other things you want to roll, higher Is better.
It's important to know that the regiment is now in the employ of a radical Ordo Xenos Inquisitor, with influence from an Ordo Malleus Inquisitor and under the watch of an Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor. Yes we've been through a lot of shit.

>Why don't you guys move to quest?
We're not a quest that's why. Quests are directed by a single GM giving choices to the players, this is completely freeform.

You're suddenly the CEO of Games Workshop. You have the final say in all decisions; creative, corporate, marketing, etc.

What would you do to improve things (company, products, brand)?

What would be your pet project?

I'll start:
>Have GW stores carry FF products and improve relations with independent retailers
>Remove Corporate from the design process almost entirely
>Open "satellite factories" in Australia, Midwest US, and Germany to cut shipping costs and time
>Expand Forgeworld factory to have a permanent "made-to-order" service for retired sculpts
