Warhammer Fantasy Role Play 3e

A narrative dice system that allowed for various degrees of success and failure

Cards for unique actions and spells that showed how they performed to keep players from having to look up their text and, since they were handy, allowing for more complex actions and spells.

Easy to understand mechanics for chases and investigations to create tension for the group.

A shared party sheet to let the group know they are doing well and doing poorly by manipulating said sheet during play.

Everyone's information for health, stress, fatigue, spent actions, and more are clearly visible to all players so everyone including the DM has a good grasp on what is happening across the board.

Initiative order isn't character specific, just broke down into hero and enemy segments. So a nimble character can keep the powerhouse wizard going first by grabbing that top initiative slot during rolls and then letting him take it.

Enemies aren't fucktarded and will run the hell away when the group is clearly winning if it is an option. Since they provide no experience there is no reason to murder hobo anything either unless ya done goofed and it is the only option left.

Seriously, this was one of the best RPG systems I have ever used in my 20+ years of playing. It had its faults (price, not big for large groups, terrible online play needs to be in person, etc) but holy shit when you get a small group together for playing, this game was fucking magical man.

I loved 2e, always wanted to do a STALKER: Shadow of Mordheim campaign.

Cna you specify why it's bad for online? Because of the shared party sheet?
>>
>>50470985
Mostly because of the $200 of gimmicky accessories required to play that didn't really add anything meaningful to the game, just it's price tag.
>>
>>50470952

I actually respect what FFG did with the game, they had the massive, dirt dragging, brass balls to take a well liked and well established system and toss it out the window entirely and try something completely and utterly new majorly drastic changes.

Yes, it had flaws, probably the biggest was the price tag. Splitting core concepts from Warhammer across multiple tomes was a pretty shit idea too (like madness not being in the core rulebooks in a warhammer game is fucked).

Still, as someone who has played a couple of adventures with it my experience went as follows.

1st time
>This is fucking weird. Why do I need to roll so many dice? How does damage work again? What the hell is stress and fatigue?

2nd time
>I got my pool ready. I am gonna use this card on my next turn. Shit, our healer got hit, better change tactics.

3rd time
>They dare fuck with Gristle Thickbeard, mightiest of Troll Slayers? Eat my axes, shit head.
>HA! I get advantage for talking this group of drunks into starting a riot because I won a drinking contest!
>God damn, wizard. Did you really need to turn that guy's dick inside out (party takes stress)
>Oh shit! RAT OGRE!

It got thematic and story teller heavy as fuck

>I wanna kill that party member
>why the fuck would you ?
>"Summon whatever the fuck RP reason"
>You do realize that killing this dude will only fuck everything up do you?
>Hey that's RP so it's fair

What would you do ? Would you straight up kick someone who wants to kill a player for the hell of it or find a way to punish him in the game ?

>I do to for being an accomplice, that's ok because it gets those crazy fuckers off the streets

Is a self-aware talking animal still an "animal"? What defines an animal in any setting?

Intelligence score of 0 or 1.
>>
>>50469858
Technically, yes it's still an animal, just like humans are technically animals.
In a setting where sapient beings have some kind of unique soul that base animals do not, then whether or not the raised animal is a person or beast would depend on if it has such a soul.
Otherwise it's pretty much dependant on whatever the in-game characters' opinions are.

What's the best way to play a skeleton wizard, /tg/? There are quite a few options:
>Awakened Skeleton
>Karnathi Skeleton
>Necropolitan
>Revenant re-fluffed with skeletal appearance

His soul is trapped in some overly constrictive demiplane so he animated and remotely controls the skeleton of some random dude in the material plane in order to figure out and execute a way to get himself back to wherever it is he wants to be. He could be a sort of comedic figure because he doesn't really care whether he lives or dies; he could just animate another skeleton to take the first one's place, making everything that happens seem ridiculous and inconsequential to him, but at the same time he would be a bit fatalistic and dour because he's been trapped for a long time.

Okay /tg/ let's take a break from the caster vs martial funposting threads and do something constructive.

Share with us the best/most helpful roleplaying product you own.

It can be anything from a rulebook, to an adventure module, to a supplement of any kind. Any game or edition goes.

For me, it's the Forgotten Realms campaign setting (2E). I love Faerun and this baby has helped me run countless games. It's really the gold standard of how campaign settings should be laid out in my humble opinion.

What's yours and why?

Even though I don't play D&D anymore, the AD&D 1E DMG is still one of the best resources for a fantasy campaign. Tricks, traps, castle building rules that aren't onerous, explanations for dozens of world things, random trollop table, it's got everything a GM needs and is a wonderful learning tool...if you ignore most of the actual rules.
>>
>>50468124

For utility, the 5e Monster Manual. 450+ monsters, 25 pages of animals, and 9 pages of NPCs is an outright embarrassment of riches in a system that's designed so that a CR1/8 Bandit and CR2 Bandit Captain are the only bandits you need for level 1-20. There's fuel for literally 1000s of game sessions in there and its guaranteed compatible with the entire 5e line by design. That's just an insane amount of value for 1 book.

For the one that helped me the most, personally, is D. Vincent Baker's Dogs in the Vineyard. Coming from a 3.PF background it gave me a wonderful opportunity to rethink so many things I thought I understood in terms of damage, consequences, story, motivations, connections, XP, Crunch vs. Fluff, prep, and even how to design a character sheet. It wasn't so much "oh, I've been doing this wrong all this time" so much as "oh, it can be that way, but it can also be this way."

Collectively, I'd say those are my two favorite systems, and I'd like to think that each informs the other.
>>
For me it is the Cortex Plus Hackers guide. By most measures it is shit. It is poorly organized, poorly edited, and full of half finished ideas that are, unfortunately, brilliant.

I do lots of Smallville RPG homebrew, and several ideas in this book have been incredibly helpful, once you take the time to finish them or cut away the useless portions.

So I've been hearing rumors that Standard attendance has been dropping pretty much universally in card shops. Are there any principal reasons for this? Kaladesh has a lot of room for brewers and it seems like a fun standard format, even if there's only 2 decks at the top tier.

BFZ sucked and it left such a sour taste that the Eldrazi presence in SOI was unfuckingwelcomed, and kaladesh is the third fucking artifact block we've had (plus 1/5 of origins, Urza's block kind of, and Antiquities way back when) so no matter how well it plays it's reception is just fucking stale.

"I fear not the man who played 10,000 sessions in different tabletop games, but the man who played 10,000 sessions in a single tabletop game"

Do you agree, and if no, why are you so shit at applying system to different things?
37 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>50467305
I disagree because certain systems are meant for one very specific style of game, and their mechanics do not translate well to other styles of game.
>>
>>50467305
I dunno, I think it still might be better to see, like, 1,000 sessions each in 10 tabletop games. Seems like it would help to see some different perspectives on how to do things.
>>
>>50467371
Mechanics can be changed and refluffed, and the whole "BE TERRIFIED OF ALTERING GAMES" that you huff and puffers are trying to build up just so people will try your specific but specifically shit hipster games is getting obnoxious at this point.

Say I began combat, chose my attackers, then the opponent chose his blockers and locked them. Now let's say we both have combat tricks we want to cast, but of course, we don't want to be the first to cast, because that would be answered by the other's CT.

I think I made that confuse, but my point is, does one player holds priority when blockers have been declared?
>>
>>50467238
Yes. The Active Player is the first one to receive priority in every step and phase, and after any object on the stack resolves. You have priority here.

If you cast your spell, your opponent will respond. If you DON'T cast your spell, your opponent will get priority; if they use it to cast their trick, you can respond with your own. If they don't use their trick, we move directly to the damage step because both players passed priority on an empty stack.

Hey Yorokonde, can we take the Brother from the brother's shadow drawback in FLCL as a companion if they lose any of the powers they have at the end? I've been collecting 'family members' like that from across the chain so all i really care about is the companion, not the powers or perks or whatever.

>Vague Irritance Elementals.
So, you know how intelligent, Genre Savvy villains usually know how to be truly evil in subtle ways? That's this thing.

It's the elemental that makes your nose itch, your armor chafe. The thing that makes the last string on your instrument just out of tune, or give the hilt of your sword a grove that your thumb always runs over. The rock in your shoe, your balls sticking to your thigh, the terrible taste of morning breath. That time where you're in the middle of drinking a glass of water and for no reason you decide to suddenly send it up the other way, getting water in your nose and making you sputter and cough.

Just think of the sheer mayhem you can cause with a being that is pure essence of irritation.

I doubt you could really capture the sort of fast paced feel of Bloodborne, but you could capture much of the universe if you've talent enough to tell a story.
>>
I've been working on one for awhile now. It's more similar to Apocalypse World or Blades in the Dark. The most interesting part of Bloodborne, to me, is its setting and atmosphere and the way the mechanics reinforce that.

I could go on about this for days but long story short, I think it's impossible to adapt Bloodborne's video game mechanics to the tabletop. Instead I'm approaching it in reverse: create tabletop mechanics that will reinforce the themes and atmosphere, similar to the relationship between story and mechanics in the video game without being bound to any specifics.

I also realize that cultivating an atmosphere of tension, fear and danger is difficult at the table, so I'm focusing on themes of madness, survival and camaraderie. I think those will be easier to play with.
>>
>>50461688
ehhh it could, I once used the card game "speed" to play a fast paced action game.
