As a long time hater of 4e, I think I've just come up with a game concept that it fits fantastically well.
All the people like myself have long compared the game (derisively) to a tabletop mmorpg.
Well, is it just me, or would it actually be perfect for doing a "trapped in an mmo" campaign?

Requesting a Drow Street Samurai,
He has rather androgynous physique/looks often being mistaken for a girl, which usually pisses him off. Otherwise his personality is rather droll, often times coming off as bored or uninterested in events going on around him.
He wields a silenced sidearm (strapped on his right thigh), a chainsaw sword (strapped on his back, you can just draw this strapped on he doesn't need to currently be wielding it), and an assault rifle on a three point sling (sling is an optional item does not need to be drawn if it's too complex to add).
He is wearing a shoulder-less combat suit like in ref. Like all Drow he suffers from photophobia thus needs a pair of goggles to defuse the bright neon lights of the city (if these could be pulled up on his forehead like a bandana for pic that would be great).
I know there is allot here, but I'm rather flexible so let me know if you would like to draw him but want to omit certain parts. Otherwise thank you in advance.

Hello /tg/. I found myself wondering how would be the setting of Wh40k without the Ruinous Powers of Chaos, and I find it would be a lot more cohesive and compelling.
Before you jump at my throat or label this just as cheap bait, let specify this is a mere mental exercise and, most of all, a matter of taste - I'm not saying 'it would be better and those who disagree with me are WRONG', just 'I would find it more compelling', and I want to know if there's anyone else here that shares this same idea.
I'm not talking of a setting without traitors; I believe the betrayal of Horus would be a lot more interesting if it wasn't just the work of some malevolent entities but an actual, human conflict, brought to a superhuman and galactic scale by the might of the characters involved.
The Warp would be something more 'alien' than 'demonic' or 'otherwordly', and just as dangerous, although without actual sentient entities or all-powerful gods. It would have all the mystique of the unknown and unfathomable, instead of just a generic Space Hell where the notions of 'Realm where thought is made manifest' and 'Actual afterlife and realm of souls' is so incoherently blurred.
Even psykers and mutants would be a lot more interesting with it - maddened and mutated by the contact with a parallel and entirely alien dimension.
I'm well aware that it wouldn' work just like that, handwaving Chaos away without any explanation on how the galaxy would have gotten itself in such dire grimdarkness, but at least the authors would have to actually think of stories with motivations a bit more interesting that just Chaos Ex Machina.
It would be an epic tale of civil war on a galactic scale, aggravated by the threats of dangerous xeno races and the Warp being made even more instable by the conflict itself, where the immense and transhuman gears of an endless war still grind incessantly, but behind it are human conflicts and tragedies rather than just the whims of the dark gods.
Thoughts?

Besides that one awful fact it seems okay. How would the galaxy become grim-dark however? The Imperium is the way it because its the only method of survival against the dark-gods not just because its loldrimderp. No dark gods mean the Imperium is a vastly different place then the actual 40k one, at which point its not even 40k anymore.

Not OP but there would still be heretics - Horus and the other legions would still rebel in his example and therefore the Imperium would still label them as heretics for defying the Emperor. Hell they'd probably still worship Big E as a god. Guy kinda had a fucking halo and a flaming sword.

We're still missing a few players to finish the mission. If they don't show up, we can continue without them, or just add new people instead.
Continuing with a smaller party will be a problem because the encounters were scaled to a team of six-eight people, so there might be some balance issues.
And just slapping new people in fucks with the continuity of the game.
Either way, if the players are up for it, we'll finish the game today. The decision is up to you guys.

Last time on DnD,
The Trendafil family hosted their summer sun festival outside the Opal Palace, commencing with a jousting tournament on the first day and the marriage of Aurelia Trendafil and Pierre Moultrie on the second. The adventurers participated in the tournament, and a mercenary from the Nighthawks company took first place. However, things were about to get weird. The victors had celebrated with a toast of wine after each round, and now the victors are turning into lions and attacking the crowd. Meanwhile a mysterious man in black armor was seen leaving the armory tent with the magic medallions from the jousters, and the party (including 1 lion) managed to subdue him, but the polymorphed lion ripped his throat out before they could question his motives.

The dead man in black armor is found to be a drow of unknown motives, The second day at the marriage reception, the players may question the guests of the wedding about the drow and how he might have poisoned the victor's wine, as well as what his motivations and allies may be. The victor of the tournament also has a place of honor at the wedding. During the ceremony, an ominous rumbling from the mountainous west reveals itself to be a hill giant. Undaunted, and prepared after the disturbance yesterday with his full armament and medallions, Moultrie Champion Cedric Langhorne dispatches the giant so as to not disturb the wedding. The wedding is a success, in spite of forces conspiring against it

I'll admit I have a good bit of lore to my settings, but I give it out in doses when the details are relevant so they don't get overwhelmed. Yet I've always got one or two players who don't read it and they think that I'm just pulling random crap out of my ass when it's an established fact and has been for weeks or even months. It's rarely more than 200-300 words in summary (though going into extreme detail is when it gets retarded) but this is a major part of the reason I quit running games. Why bother giving you a setting if you just want to kill shit? Go play WOW if you want to play something where you can ignore the lore.

Just make it a rule in the beginning of a game that players don't HAVE to read the lore, but if they ask stupid questions that have a clear cut answer in the lore you have provided, then their character takes a penalty.

D&D is ultimately a game about killing orcs and taking their stuff.
Replace "orcs" with "drow" or "mindflayers" or "cultists" or "necromancers" or "lizardmen" as appropriate. Or indeed "dragons" or even "archdevils", "demon princes", or "gods" if the players are strong enough.
It is a hack and slash game at its roots and its trunk and its boughs.
