So I recently got into magic, and after some kitchen magic with some friends, I am browsing the forums and whatnot for any information about the game. After looking at all that I am starting to realize how expensive this game is. I really just want to play causally until I get into a much better financial situation (aka get out of college)
Is there anywhere I can acquire cards (like bulk commons) for very cheap or even free? I continuously find people on the forums who say they have so many bulk commons/uncommons that some people end up throwing them away or just let them collect dust. Should I ask around my local card shop or would that be looked down upon? Is there websites where people give useless cards to newer players?

Only play Commander, pauper and draft. Everything else will eat your money and end your will to live. Buy the commander precons. They're efficient.
Buy stuff from your local shop if it's TCG player prices +- 20%. Don't buy if they're overcharging you by more than 20%. I'd recommend MTGcardmarket, above, for singles. Bulk commons and uncommons cost pennies online anyway, you can literally order hundreds for less than €10
Always be mindful of the power level of your playgroup, this is why multiplayer formats are useful. If you become too powerful and curbstomp your opponents every game in duels, they'll get frustrated and stop playing if they're fairly new. In multiplayer games this isn't as much an issue, but it still can be if you fill your commander deck with infinite combos and the like. Focus on having fun, not winning. People who focus on winning will always either spend too much on the game or ragequit because they can't afford to spend too much on the game.

Reckon it would be pretty much same kind of novels we have now. But instead of QUANTUM and NANOMACHINES everything would be explained with WIZARDS FUCK YEAH!
Also Dragonstar is closest thing we will have to hard sci fi mixed with fantasy.

I'm really bad with suddenly losing interest over my current character and wanting to try a new one. I've gone as far as to fudge rolls to kill my character off quicker so I can make a new one.

Why not just talk to your GM and ask him if you can retire your character and try a new one? Not every adventure has to end with death. Some people choose to hang up their hats after a while.

Just explain to your GM that you're not having fun with your current character, and ask if you can make a new one. It's not a big deal.

Heyo /tg/, I'm a degenerate scrub who's only ever played PF and D&D and I'd like to branch out more. What I'm really looking for is something that isn't "dungeon crawl or bust".

What does /tg/ recommend that isn't inherently a combat simulator? Will post art in the meantime.

For fantasy I'd go with Runequest 6/Mythras.
For Sci-Fi I like Traveller. The new Mongoose v2 is pretty good.
FATE/Gurps are good open ended systems to run anything in.

I've heard good things about Runequest, but only in that people have said "it's good". Can you tell my anything about how skills are handled in those games? I say "skills" but that's probably my d20 bias showing- what I mean is "the stuff that doesn't involve murdering things/the result of practicing a discipline"

Welcome to Atlantasia, a weird and wonderful world where level 1 characters with whips have a 35% chance to slip and kill themselves whenever they miss, where there's more kinds of Elf than any other race, where Gnomes are Turbo-Kender, where combat turns last seven minutes and where the most common cause of death is horny dragons.

This thread is an attempt to actually try to make and play characters in one of the truly great bad RPGs out there, Realms of Atlantasia, a game that has 550 pages of pure bullshit with no registry nor table of contents.

Inspired by old Fecht threads, particularly FATAL Fecht threads, where we'd pit two characters against each other in a fight to the death, my goal is for you guys to pick, roll and fluff out a total of eight fighters (if we get that far), in a grand tourney to the death. Since this is a honourable test of martial strength we will not be rolling any spellcasters this time around. Maybe later.

I made a character for the Game of Thrones rpg. Gave him Blood of Heroes to increase abilities above 7, dumped cunning, deception and knowledge to 1, then upped his athletics to 10, put five specialization points in strength, 3 in brawling and picked brawler 2, so his hands have the fast and powerful qualities, and he adds his athletics +2 to his damage with his fists, and adds his athletics to his fighting 4 rolls to hit people, meaning when he uses his fists, it's like he's fighting with fighting 14 and he hits people for 13 damage, a giant has 15 health. His athletics also increases his defence and his fast he is. I could probably squeeze another 2 athletics if I gave up on the endurance 4, and animal handling, persuasion, warfare and will 3.

Would you let this fly in your campaign?

You may however face some degree of consequences for sacrificing certain areas of your stats for others, although I wouldn't take this as an excuse to passive aggressive rocks fall railroad you.

Ideas for locations and/or bosses for a Dark Souls-esque game?

DM said we could each put forward an idea for a boss that the others wouldn't know about for a surprise.

this isn't a very fair comparison, because a Sacred Fist's core mechanic involves abusing its swift action self cast buffs.

On a pure numbers level on DPS without those obviously a Sacred Fist is worse, but it brings far more utility, healing, ect to the party.

We've done this several times over with this site alone. 4chan: the Trolling, the 4chan Archipelago, and 4chan house.

I think we made -tans of /tg/-related subreddits at some point. Everyone of them was a douche, but Teej still plays with /r/MagicTCG, and /r/tabletopcrusaders is a bro, and visits every Sunday.

All right you guys, riddle me this:

Lets say I hit a Toughness 8 Monstrous Creature (wraithlord) with a strength 3 weapon (lasgun), I have 0% chance of wounding the wraith lord. I dont roll to wound becuase its not going to happen/\.

NOW

Why isn't the converse true? Say I hit toughness 3 guardsmen with a strength 8 Krak missle, why the fuck do I have to roll to wound? It should be 100% probability (inb4 indian jones in fridge (thats what cover saves are for))

So, I’m playing in a D&D campaign, but this story isn’t about me or the GM. This is about a ‘friendly’ rogue NPC that we encountered. See, we were captured by the drow and forced to fight in a gladiatorial arena. I guess the DM was having mercy on us and not just killing us outright. We were told that we could earn our freedom if we won a tournament. We were stuck on the same team as an orc named Grognard (I know, I know) who was captured along with us. Turns out he was a rogue who was pretty sure the drow had his daughter, so he was there mainly to find and free her. Oh yeah, and his right arm? Gone. He had a sword where his elbow cut off.

So, we go through the tournament and we do surprisingly well. We go up against things that a group of 5th level characters really shouldn’t have won against, but the dice were on our side. We learned that our new friend Grognard was REALLY good at using his arm sword to kill things. So all in all, we get chummy with him and treat him like another party member.

So, we end up WINNING the tournament, and what do you know, the drow aren’t going to let us go. Big shocker there. We’re thrown into prison cells under the BULLSHIT accusation that we cheated to win. Grognard? He’s thrown in with us and essentially told, “Yeah, you were never going to get your daughter again. She’s being used for experiments at the local mage’s tower.”

So, next session we end up breaking out of prison, because of course we do. Kill a fair amount of drow while we’re at it. Grogard? He’s f*cking pissed. We’re trying to escape and free some of the other slaves while we’re at it, meanwhile this guy is disemboweling people left and right, sneaking ahead every so often to take out one or two before combat even starts, while we take out the rest.

Long story short, we free some of the prisoners, start going on our way, when Grognard encourages us to get out of the Underdark. He’s going after his daughter. See, thing is, we kind of don’t want him to die, since we want him to join us permanently. But he’s insistent, and so we split ways, hoping to see each other again someday.

This is where the DM starts packing up, but we ask about the orc. We want to know what happens to him. The DM says that he hadn’t really thought about it and that’d he’d come up with something when one of the other players says, “Why not have him roll for it?” The DM’s like, “You know he probably has a better chance of dying that way, right?” We don’t care. We want to find out what happens to him.

Let me stop the story right here. Grognard goes to the wizard’s tower and reenacts the events of Taken. That fucker killed EVERYTHING he came across in the wizard’s tower. Fucking everything. This is apparently stuff that the entire party was supposed to take on at a later date. The DM rolled in front of us out in the open, and I swear at times he was giving far more stealth checks than necessary, but somehow, someway, the dice fell on this orc’s side.

But you know what? This morning, the DM sent us a ‘short story’ reimagining of what happened to Grognard in that wizard’s tower. I’ll let that explain what happened.

Grognard looked up at the tower, a weary look in his eyes. In all his years, he never thought he'd be doing something so clearly suicidal. Then again, he also never expected to leave his home on the surface world for the treacherous caverns of the Underdark. He tenderly rubbed the nub where a steel blade protruded from his elbow in place of a forearm. No matter how often he used this implanted weapon, Grognard was sure he'd never quite get used to the feeling of it. Still, to save his daughter Zenova, he was more than willing to put up with a little discomfort.


Letting his posture slip into a comfortable crouched position, he quickly scanned the entrance for any signs of wards. Narrowing his eyes, he could see the faint trace of arcane lines. Carefully examining the runes traced within the floor he recognized it as a ward against any males passing through the area. His surprise quickly vanished when he remembered the matriarchal nature of drow society. Knowing exactly where to sever the arcane weaves without triggering the spell, Grognard quickly did so and slipped inside, not wanting to spend any more time out in the open than he truly had to.


Once inside, Grognard quickly assessed his surroundings. A statue of a female drider sat in in the center of this main hall, almost -but not quite- blocking his view of a drow scholar sitting in the far side of the room. On either side of him was a small room which seemed like a checkpoint station for anyone entering the mage's tower. Finally, a conversation with three distinct voices rang out from the eastern portion of the room.

All of this, Gorgnard absorbed in less than a second. Rolling into the room to his left, the old orc plunged his armblade into the drow sitting there before she could even raise her eyebrows. Before the body even hit the floor, he was already making his way to the eastern room, his footfalls nearly silent against the stone floor. Just as he was about to lunge towards the next drow, she did something quite unexpected. Look up, shocked, and immediately scream.


The shrillness of her voice rang out for only a second before his blade found its mark, but that was enough. Not wanting to waste a second, Grognard sprinted out the room, flinging a dagger into the neck of one drow and disemboweling another with his arm blade. Though those two didn't have time to draw their weapons from their sheaths, their third conversation partner managed to parry a thrust from his armblade... sending it inches deep into the wooden bench beside her.


"Help!" The drow shouted as Grognard attempted to pull out his arm blade from the bench. "Intruder!" She slashed her rapier twice catching him once in the arm, though the orc was able to kick her away to avoid any serious injury. Shaking off the poison the weapon was doubtless coated in, Grognard retrieved his armblade and sent another kick at the drow, catching her in the groin just as she had begun casting a spell. Taking advantage of the distraction, he quickly dispatched of her by plunging his armblade into her chest.
