Practically every campaign our group has because they fucking love monsters and cute things. Even things that aren't considered traditionally "cute" like dinosaurs and bugs.

One time the party essentially tamed a giant scorpion, kept it as a pet, and used it to raid the BBEG's hideout.

In a short lived Rogue Trader game, I had the PC's discover a mutant mafia in the dark holds of their ship, run by a self interested yet reasonable queen bitch. Due to both the crew and the mutants having a mutual interest in getting rid of the psychic bullshit brewing in the lower decks, they joined forces to put and end to it. After that the captain and the mafia boss enjoyed a cordial relationship (in his words, "she's as backstabbing as any noblewoman but far more up front about it"), while the seneschal plotted extensively to have her and her men purged from the ship. It's a shame that the game crapped out, because I'd have liked to have seen how that would have turned out.

We mostly play sci-fi or cyberpunk games nowadays, so there isn't a lot of monsters. And the GM hasn't used any "ugly-looking mutated brute that is in fact your cyberpal" trick recently.

We had a human mutant little girl mascot in a old Dark Heresy game for a while, but that's all.

The tread is now on page 6, that means that there is quite a lot of traffic on this board. Why are there no replies? Not even yelling that the idea is stupid? Is this the wrong board?

Because A, coming up with appropriate stuff is difficult enough when you know the target audience well, and we know nothing of your friend, nor have any real starting point to build off of. B, most people on /tg/ are lazy, and probably have very little experience with this sort of thing and would rather shitpost about edition wars or elves than wrack their minds trying to help with something like this.

Reaping Mauler is terrible because Clever Wrestling only works for Medium creatures, meaning you can't use size-increasing magic to boost your grapple check. And size modifiers on grapple checks are huge, meaning that your main combat strategy won't work on anything bigger than you.

my players are likely to rp to succeed at a fight they otherwise wouldnt.

I tend to handle the combat on a squad level. The party faces a single squad out of the enemy army. They can also identify and eliminate high priority targets like siege weapons or commanders.
I would handle finding reinforcements as a non-combat encounter and only start up a fight when the players start to actually fight.

Groups of enemies with collective hitpoints. If a gobbo has 4HP, then a squad of 20 gobbo has 80HP. This means that one really nasty melee attack can wipe out the majority of them.

Large groups get to make multiple attacks that have fairly large accuracy modifiers

Same thing I do with the fodder, I micro them as the dmpc commander well I roll to see the result of the other fields. Deploying special unit in their area if they are in a bind like soldier see hero saving the day.

You can play RPGs online. We have a gamefinder thread here, and there's the LFG listings on roll20 (but those are cancer).

The mechanics of BG are a bastardised version of 2e AD&D fused with real-time combat. That edition hasn't been current for 16 years now, so forget what you know of the mechanics.

Dark Sphere (in the Waterloo-ish area) does D&D Encounters on a Wednesday evening, and most of the people there are fairly pleasant (I used to play Warmachine there on a Monday night). Obviously it'll be a bit hit-or-miss, being as it's open to the public, but it might be a good start.

The RP Haven is in Lewisham and Stratford. I've not been to their meetings before, but the folks advertising their community at Dragonmeet yesterday seemed okay, and a bunch of us were planning to go along to their Stratford meet-ups at some point. Again, open to the public, so could be good, could be bad.

Try them out, make friends in the groups, start your own group based on the people you meet there.

If you go to a game store, they might have signs advertising groups seeking new players, and sometimes the stores themselves run games. Beyond that, it's almost always better to just take some of your friends that don't play and teach them how to. If you don't have enough friends, go out and make new ones because that should be your primary concern compared to what games you'll be playing with them.

With D&D, you've got two major options, 3.5/Pathinder and 5e, though there's several others including 4e and retroclones. What you learned in Baldur's gate is a good start, but that was 2e and the game has changed quite a bit, but you might even be able to find a group that still plays that edition. Overall, it's probably best to be adaptable and to play what your group wants to play, but more likely than not you're going to want to be playing 5e, since it has the larger player base (largest of all games, in fact) and is also the newest edition. You can find all the books in .pdf form in the 5e general, and the wizards website also has some helpful materials for new players.

Bladelock with polearm master for damage. Tomelock is good too, but doesn't offer either the utility of chainlock or damage of bladelock

Blaster all the way. Being able to consistently deal solid damage and to move creatures away from you is great, and there are so many ways to augment it with concentration abilities. Hex for the added damage and debuff, ascendant step to become a floating turret outside of melee reach, darkness and devil's sight for added cover, etc...

I think bladelocks aren't bad, but they don't play to the class's strengths.
