How do I play a Lawful Evil character without making the game worse for everyone involved?

>How do I play a Lawful Evil character without making the game worse for everyone involved?
Evil characters can work on "good" projects for selfish reasons.
Demand you get paid, and paid well. Protect the world not to protect innocent lives, but to protect your own home.
Fight the evil wizard for his collection of magical artifacts.
Keep your allies alive because you'll need them later.

Given that a top end D&D mage can do more or less anything, how do you regulate your high level mage players against their non-mage teammates?

Only in certain editions. The easy solution is to just not play those editions.

Not allowing T1 classes. Those are reserved only for BBEGs.

I don't understand why people don't just restrict the spell book. Some spells are so powerful, it should essentially be a quest in itself to get the information necessary to cast it, and even then, there should be a good reason to seek out such power. Just divide the spell book into common, rare, epic and legendary spells, and make sure they can't just pick up the crazy bullshit ones over the weekend at the local library

I want to run a HxH game. How to I accurately simulate Nen using RPG mechanics? What system would work for it? If I used GURPS what books should I use?

I'd suggest Anima: Beyond fantasy, if only because Ki abilities and Techniques are real close to how nen works.
And because one of my players' character is full on Hisoka Morow, personality-wise.
>>
>>50549079
I have no experience with HxH, but after a brief perusal of the wiki, here's how I'd handle HxH game in GURPS.

1. Use fast-paced and cinematic rules. The Action series and Martial Arts book are good sources for these. Don't fall into the trap of including rules because they're there; GURPS is not that kind of game and your fast-paced shonen-based game is going to fall apart if you get caught up in gritty realistic rules.
2. In GURPS terminology, Nen is a source, Nen type (Enhancer/Transmuter/Conjurer/etc.) is a power, and the various techniques and applications of Nen are abilities. See Powers for more detail. Psionic Powers may be worth looking at for its approach to supernatural powers vs supernatural skills.
3. Vows and Limitations already exist in standard GURPS, though ironically the names are reversed. Advantages can have limitations to reduce their point cost, and it looks like all HxH vows would be covered by the Accessibility limitation. Disadvantages can be taken to give you more points in general, and HxH limitations would be a version of the Vow disadvantage that, when broken, would be replaced with a disadvantage equal to *twice* the Vow's value. Such Vows could also be used for the Pact limitation.

Basic Set + Powers (for Nen); GM should also glance through Action 1-3, Martial Arts, and Psionic Powers for rules advice, but the books won't be necessary for players. Swing by the GURPS general if you end up going with this system, but best of luck to you regardless if you go with something else!

Suppose a tiny kingdom being invaded by a massive empire where to use a powerful magic spell, a super-weapon, which targets all active military personell and destroys military based industries.

The result is millions, perhaps even a billion soldiers dropping dead instantly, while civilians nearby are left untouched. Military factories, arms stores, and ammunition rusts to dust but farms, clothing mills, and necessities of life remain.

Would this be considered Genocide? If done as an act of self defense?

As luck would have it a certain Gamesfest has chopped away what active time that thread was supposed to run for in any case It is time for now to take a small break before the dive to the subfloor can commence again during the tumultuous holidays.

With the soft end to Floor 6 valuable data has been gathered considering that it signals the first "descent" our Runners must undertake in order to retreat from the dangerous Gaolers.

Plans going forth:
In the near future patches will be implemented to
-clarify death conditions once more.
-modify the day/night system to include 24 turns instead of 12 turns for a full cycle.
-modify the amount of turns the group recieves with every ascent
- flesh out crafting and hopefully create a pasta package or a visual guide [ambitious]
New Features will also include
- Introduce New Classes
- Continue successful feature trends like crafting.

DMSide.
Lately with the increase of players it is likely that floors would have to increase both in size firstly and lethality secondly. To address the second point, many tools are already in place to help with post death recovery such as random races, modified Inheritor and Wanderer systems. The next floor will be interesting in that difficulty will not be as intentionally lethal as the current floor however the scope of challenges like usual will be appropriate for the narrative. Which will bring me to the first point; Floors will simply have to be bigger, conferring multiple routes and creating a metagame around finding the stairs while also exploring a myriad of threats around the Floor. Thanks to an upgrade to my personal machine, it is now possible to support such a demanding undertaking furthermore it should resolve a lot of the problems that sprang up in Floor 6 that posed many problems to players.

On Difficulty=
Floors will continue to be appropriately challenging until major threats have been defeated.

Furthermore,
even as one descends, the Gaolers will pursue. But due to the change in environment upon descending there yet stands a chance at defeating or circumventing the threat. It should be noted that the advanced play displayed on floor 6 will continue to be on demand in the next one when dealing with them.

What to expect on the Next Floor:
The Realm of Goblins is an interesting phenomenon in the Floors, for this migratory tribe mines through the superstructure in search of great and rare technologies to improve their lives, they are often cut off from the greater world and some are not even aware of the Mal. Nevertheless for a group of Goblins to find their way in the Pneumaether must imply a terrestrial route and an opened way to escape or dive further down away from Gaolers and into depths unknown.

I want to run a Mutants and Masterminds game for my group over the holiday break, and I'm looking for creative concepts and subversions of Cape tropes to populate the world with. In particular, I want to include a large number of capes with low-level powers that use them in unconventional ways, especially synergizing with other powers.

I'll kick off the thread with a cape art dump.

I'm building a Hida Pragmatist for an L5R game, and I've got some questions.

First- my character is marrying into the Matsu- my wife thinks I'm scum and my brother and superior likes me- what issues should I expect as a new Lion clan member?

Second, how does my marriage change my loyalties? Should I still follow orders from the crab, or always put the Lion first?

Third, as a pragmatist, can I expect to be competitive on the battlefield with improvised weapons? I intend to go Crav Berserker for rank 2.
103 posts and 8 images submitted.
>>
>>50535078
>First
Crab to Lion actually won't have too many problems. Your character is already used to military discipline, and the Matsu are pretty rowdy in their off-time. There shouldn't be too much culture shock.
>Second
Your loyalty is supposed to be to your new clan just as if you had been born into it. "Supposed to be" being the most important part of that sentence. Don't expect the Lion to include you in any potential plans against the Crab.
>Third
Yes. Crab Berserker means double yes. Don't be afraid to get into grappling either. A lot of your opponents won't be able to fight their way out of it, since most combatants neglect unarmed combat.
>>
>>50535146
My main concern is honor- Pragmatists start with Honor 2.5, and I took Infamous- and Lion are honor obsessed.
>>
>>50535210
Well then, you're going to be getting a lot of dirty looks.
When applied correctly, your honor score will rest around where you actually play the character, regardless of what it started as. It's only that low because Pragmatists train dirty, fight dirty, and are usually extra rude. If your character makes a concerted effort to be more polite and "proper", then it will quickly rise up to a more respectable 4 or 5. If you keep being a dirty, rude bastard, it's probably not going anywhere, since the gains you get from being brave and loyal will be offset by losses from being rude.

I have a question for you /tg/, because I want to use your responses to help me build a setting.

You are now a powerful extradimensional entity. Not an Abrahamic God, but something akin to a Lovecraftian Outer God, a being of great but not unlimited power. And you, in your wandering of higher planes or whatever, find an alien planet full of little sapient critters. They have technology, they have what you think is art, they have some sort of culture, though you're not really sure how it works, and they are clearly intelligent. But they are also far below you, tiny ants running around between your toes.

What do you do with them? How do you react to the situation? If you, personally, were in this situation, what would you do?
82 posts and 20 images submitted.
>>
>>50528299
Entirely depends on your inbuilt motivations.

All contiguous beings said to be alive have a 'reason' for why they act, even if they don't understand it fully. Music=communication=mate finding.

So, does the lovecraftian deity have some sort of 'sustenance' requirement? Does it have future goals? Is it a plot tool whose goals only reflect what the author desires the reader to feel?

If I have nothing really critical to attend to then I'd probably observe them a bit and see if I can convert them and see how much I can shape them and their world in my image. If they have existing pantheons then I'd probably try and corrupt their gods as well, either directly but most likely through tainting their creations.

I'm sort of surprised it's never the other way around. I mean, how many dudes would freak and run if they found out their wife to be was some bitchy old hag?
>Inb4 fertility
It would still be creepy as shit. Hell, the fact that she's desperate due to biological clock would make things worse, in my opinion. Especially if she uses magic to hide her true appearance and he saw through it.
>>
>>50526096
>how many dudes would freak and run
But that's the thing, they don't need to run away to get away. Historically a man was perfectly justified spending his entire life on military campaigns. The woman was generally stuck in the house - unless she ran away.
With equal genders in RPGs this explanation wouldn't work anymore of course.
>>
>>50526096
Well, actually, young men specifically seeking out old, rich widows and marrying them used to be a common thing and was a common trope in literature too - because when their wives die, they get all of their money and estate for themselves.
Never seen it in tabletop, however.

Sup /tg/

GW's new Thousand Sons releases came at the perfect time for me. Just a couple weeks ago I started reading their lore and find them cool as shit.

A few questions, though:

1) The Rubric of Ahriman turned most of the legion into armor-bound dust, correct? Can these marines remove their helms or take gashes in their armor? Will their souls escape if they do?

2) I remember reading Battle of the Fang a long time ago, and if I recall correctly, the Rubrics that attacked the Fang could fire bolters without suffering recoil and moved "in slow motion," even though they didn't... kind of.

Do the Rubrics *actually* move slowly/ sluggishly? Are they hindered in close combat from the curse? Or can they keep up with say a Space Wolf or Blood Angel?

Lastly, my mate told me TS bolters fire AP3 shots on the tabletop. That's pretty cool, but what gives them that ability?

Other than those questions to start us off, general Thousand Sons thread.

So I've been playing E.Y.E. lately, and it reminded me of how much I love just being thrown into a setting with really no clue at all as to what is going on, and just figuring it out as I go.

Things like Blame!, Pathologic, Ergo Proxy, the first Matrix film, Deus Ex, most of the retro-futuristic movies and games from the 80s and 90s, they all have this very unique dark, oppressive atmosphere that leaves you feeling half claustrophic, half in awe.

How can we recreate this in tabletop gaming? I get a lot of this feeling when reading most 90s White Wolf rulebooks, but not when I'm playing their actual games. Same thing with Shadowrun: reading the books fills my mind with imagery, but when running or playing a game of Shadowrun I rarely get the same atmospheric vibe that I get reading something like Neuromancer or Dune.

What rulebooks give good tips on running these types of games? How do you guys enhance the atmosphere for these types of games? Which soundtracks would you recommend? What other settings evoke similar feelings to these?

Anything generic where you make your own setting would work with work, but you really want to find something that just has weird rules and a weird setting to go with it.
>>
>>50522260

The problem is that normally with tabletop games, players have access to way too much information prior to the start of the game.

Like, they'll know all about the playable races, the items, the general idea of the setting, etc.

How can we go around this without fucking up game balance? I could just hand them pregens and not tell them anything about the setting, but that's too obvious. Are there any systems out there tailored specifically around this?
