What are some video games that are *very* close to emulating PnP RPG rules down to the letter, both for the better and worst?

Picture related. Goldbox games are amazingly close to 1st edition rules, and their combat is probably the most accurate D&D game ever, NWN and Baldur's Gate eat your hearts out.

Brief inter-thread which died because Monday.

Song of Swords is a a tabletop RPG centered around realistic medieval fightan' with a ludicrous variety of weapons and fighting styles, centered around a dice pool system. It's currently in beta, and can be used for both fantasy and historical games.

Call of the Void: Ballad of the Laser Whales is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.

I want to buy one of these games. What are the pros and cons of D&D 5e and Pathfinder?

I NEED THE FOLLOWING ANSWERED

>which system does High, Middle, and Low fantasy better?
which system does High, Middle, Low Magic games better?
>which one is easier to teach to an RPG virgin?
which offers more straight core-book options for characters or GMs?
>which has more optional rules systems that a game can go totally without but that could add depth(encumberance, survival, grapple rules, alchemy, armor fabrication, damage from being out in the elements.)
>which has better in-core balance?(this may be an opinion but it might be pretty useful to have enough disparate opinions)
which game offers the widest array of entities in it's respective monster bestiaries?
>which game is easier for a munchkin to bend over a table and spank violently?

PF does high fantasy better. It does low fantasy just fine using the Automatic Bonus Progression in the Pathfinder Unchained Book. 5e does low and middle fantasy fine, and high fantasy okay if you don't mind being throttled back.

5e is defintiely easier to teach.

PF offers more options Core, but is also the most severely unbalanced at the core level. UYnless you go on the OGL site, in which case you're good.

PF has more optional rules than you can shake a set of dice at.

5e has better in core balance.

PF has the much, much, MUCH wider variety of Bestiaries, villains, and enemies in general (the NPC Codex, Villain Codex, and Monster Codex has use amounts of useful groups, people, and enemies for your PCs at all levels of play).

They can both be bent over and fucked like little whores by any optimizer. But that's also true of 90% of the games out there. PF has more known loopholes and issues, that's all. Give 5e another 6 months and it will be just as broken and fucked up.

>this is the most objective opinion you're going to get, and enjoy your "HAVE YOU TRIED NOT PLAYING D&D" meme, baitposter.
>>
So this is coming from someone whos played both 5e and pathfinder and liked both. I'm not really into edition wars so just my two cents. also I've played 5e more recently than pathfinder so i may have 5e bias as a result.

>which system does High, middle, and low fantasy better?
I can't really speak to this a whole lot because as a gm i'm prone to customizing my games in the ways i like. I can say that with 5e's bounded accuracy the numbers stay closer together throughout levels which may be a benefit for low fantasy I guess?

>Which one is easier to teach to an RPG virgin?
In my opinion D&D 5e is easier to teach. In my experience 5e's rules are a little more straight forward as far as character creation goes and players trying to learn pathfinder almost inevitably find the d20pfsrd and get completely overwhelmed by options. Also 5e has an excellent "newbie" adventure in Lost Mines of Phandelver

>more optional rules system that could add depth?
They both have some, like 5e has encumbrance and madness in the Dungeon Masters Guide. Pathfinder has more for sure though. They have an entire book of optional stuff to spice up a campaign their book Ultimate Campaign.

>better in-core balance?
In my opinion they're both pretty balanced but i don't really play with power gamers or people who try to super game the system. I suppose 5e's balance is a little better because pretty much all of the material is run through playtests before officially being published but you'll find supporters for both sides.

>which game offers the widest array of entities in its bestiaries?
Definitely pathfinder. they're on bestiary 5 right now while 5e only has two. The monster manual and Volo's Guide to Monsters. 5e's monsters seem to have slightly more indepth lore in general tho.

>which game is easier for a munchkin?
In my experience definitely pathfinder. But that could be due to having more options.

I'll answer more questions if you have them. hopefully that helps some Anon.

Every village has a giant that protects it. If that giant dies a new one will be born into that village.

Cities might have multiple giants, or even a Titan if they're large and important enough.

Your party is a group of giants that are village-less, either due to famine, disease, exile or just bad luck.

Are there generals for this? I can't remember.

I've been recently working to create a setting, either for a campaign I'll be running next or (more ambitiously) a series of connected short-stories à la Solomon Kane. Either way, I'm hoping to get some help with developing the latest kingdom. I wanted to include a kingdom of thieves, but where I'm having trouble is how that might extend into an actual government without descending into something approaching anarchy.

The nation should be quite small, although that's offset by the scale of the region - I'd rather not have either plausible outcome of this setting be massive in scale. Too often I attempt to produce scenarios that are very "end-of-the-world", and so this time I'm challenging myself to create an "end-of-OUR-world" type of setup, where the characters well-being is threatened rather than the entirety of the world. That way I can alleviate the easy escape of handing the task off to others; the protagonists are being threatened directly and they themselves must defend what they hold dear.

Buggers and Crows.jpg
75KB, 659x800px
But I digress: the kingdom of thieves is ruled by a single King, who is the original leader who took the land from the neighboring kingdoms. I very much like the idea presented by Terry Pratchett in Feet of Clay, concerning Nobby Nobbs - that he would be an excellent leader if he simply sidled into enemy territory and pinched castles. Thus the now-decrepit King is a near-legendary thief who somehow managed to steal himself a modest region complete with his own keep and outlying towns. The primary keep is this thief-lord's personal mansion and base of operations. However, rather than being surrounded by an outlying town, the keep is surrounded by a densely populated camp made permanent, with more permanent tents than actual buildings. The thief-king is served by his "Hands", an order of tax-collectors and judges whose service is bought, although given the state of the thief-king's health there should be questions of who will succeed him as their Lord.

Where I'm running into problems is the logistics regarding this small nation. I have no trouble developing the style or character of the people who might live there, but I need some help developing the government. Why might the cities in this nation owe fealty to the central King? How do I go about instilling some form of order, such that the entire place doesn't become some massive squalor? I've been able to develop the other locations around the region without too much difficulty, but I'm just running into dead ends with this one.

Normally I'd bounce ideas around with my brother, but he's unavailable so I thought I'd see if /tg/ would be willing to be my dart-board for ideas tonight. Feel free to share your own stuff and I'll see if I can't lend a hand, or at least comment. I won't say I'm super qualified, but whatever.
>>
>>50720242
Well, you could have the cities act as a loose confederation rather than a unified nation state. That would mean that they would work well in times of peace (plenty of trading opportunities as well as theft), but they would chafe in times of war, with no cooperation between the various thief-mayors and thief-counts.

So, you could have an invading army from a covetous kingdom nearby seeking to restore order to what they view as "anarchy" (even though the system works perfectly well for the cities involved). The players would be people who have livelyhoods connected to the well-being of the thief-kingdom, with maybe some taking interests in aspects of the succesion.

Why do people play moralfags in RPGs?

Does anyone else find this interesting? Does it make up some inadequacy or insecurity in their every day lives? Are they simply emotionally and intellectually undeveloped and immature? Are these people a way to make a quick buck from bad DMs who want to exploit their childish hero complex?

So here's a story about one particular session of Paranoia that I played in.

> GM has premade characters for us all, informs us that this is a mission he made himself
> Super [DELETED FOR SECURITY REASONS] Brothers
>I get the Wario analogue because I'm the fattest fuck out of all the players
> among other things, I have a narrow specialization for ordering food over my PDC
> early in the mission, I order a very large supply of sticky snack food because Free Enterprise wants me to sabotage a new transit tube prototype that happens to look like a large, flared green pipe
> roll a 1, which is Paranoia for "you have succeeded in a strange and hilarious way"
> but my food never shows up
> continue with the adventure, get killed and/or executed five times
> sacrifice my sixth clone to do a sick piledriver on not!Bowser through some bricks and into an open smelter, while screaming that R&D are commie mutant traitors
> rest of the team rescues not!Peach and heads back towards the briefing rooms
> they go back via the previous transport tube
> my food finally arrives
> in a single crate
> which is airdropped straight onto the VIP
>I laugh like a goddamn jackal as the entire team gets executed for incompetence

Months later, I learned he had also run it for an online group, and their Wario clone did the same shit.
>>
>>50719563
Honestly, about half the excitement in my games came from the R&D equipment the clones were forced to test out. Rocket boots are never not hilarious, but my favorite was a hands-free laser. It was built into helmet that was locked in place by the R&D guys (don't want a clone losing valuable equipment by taking it off or letting it get knocked off) and operated simply by looking at your target and blinking. There was a safety mechanism, of course, but it was glitchy, and whenever the player blinked (well... was specifically noticed to blink), his clone's helmet-laser blasted whatever he was looking at.

What's /tg/'s general consensus on Yugioh? I've recently had the sudden urge to get back into the game, but it has been years since I last played and from what I've heard the game's meta has changed drastically. Also I don't know how popular the game still is outside of dueling network (which is shut down for now) so I'm not sure if investing into the actual physical game is worth it.
